In this episode of the podcast, we review Season 1, Episode 6 of Star Trek the Animated Series. The Survivor is a dense story with a lot of lore from introducing the Vendorians to mentioning Bones' daughter. Part intrigue, part action, part tragic love story, Survivor manages a lot on a cheap budget. We discuss it at length in this, our 4th episode.

I'm going to say one of the nicest things I can about a show about Star Trek: Lower Decks
They played us like a string quartet.
(Spoilers for 4x09: "The Inner Fight")
Lower Decks was sold a Star Trek/Rick & Morty mashup from the start. The first scene is a drunken Mariner literally harming her sidekick, Boimler. It practically screamed, "Mariner & Boimler a hundred tours! Double-u, double-u, double-u dot Mariner and boimler dot com!"
But of course, it also had Star Trek references. One of the earliest is "Who would win in a fight? Khan or Roga Danar?" Why would anyone else in The Federation know or care who Roga Danar is? And there's no imagination on display for the oldest referential paradigm, "Who would win in a fight?" Lazy. Bullshit.
Of course before the end of season one, Lower Decks showed us it was more than that. Boimler was gaining the kind of experience he needed. The story hinted very strongly that Mariner had been in Starfleet a LONG time. She wasn't a omnicompotent mary sue; she was a Commander with her own philosophy/trauma that compelled her to remain an Ensign.
It was a good show and it stood on its own. The references were used well to create interesting stories ("Twovix"), as part of the setting ("Hear All, Trust Nothing"), or just as a gag here and there ("Kayshon, His Eyes Open" and, like a dozen others). The references to the setting become the background radiation, remarkable in how deep a cut they really are (Vendorians?). I've described it to many people as "Star Trek, but everyone has watched Star Trek."
What it wasn't, was related to its namesake. "Lower Decks" was a surprisingly heavy episode about the younger members of the Enterprise crew and their perspective on the missions of galactic import that the viewer usually enjoys an omnisicent view of.
Lower Decks mentions our main cast don't have that omniscient view, but Mariner is a stone-cold badass, Rutherford was part of a secret effort to develop artificial intelligence, Tendi is the Mistress of the Winter Constellations, and Boimler--actually Biomler is no more exceptional than any other Starfleet officer.
So when we get our main cast and the senior officers into a room and they mention Nick Locarno, our thought is, "LOL, another reference. This one from TNG. Not particularly deep. LOL, Boimler is a Beverly Crusher fanboy. I guess it makes sense, they have the character model from the episode with Tom Paris. Clearly, Robert Duncan McNeil is happy to do some voice work. We'll probably make a reference to how much he looks like Tom Paris.
"lol"
Look, if you figured it out then pat yourself on the back. Me? I filed away another reference. I didn't realize that Nick Locarno was connected to the episode of TNG that was this entire series' namesake. The characters even say, "Who?" which is one of the first times they don't get a Star Trek reference. Because Nick Locarno isn't a part of the Star Trek universe they view with an enthusiastic fandomness; it's part of their dramatic history, whether they know it or not.
"ha-ha, I guess Nick Locarno is too deep a cut for the show that called back to Morgan fucking Bateson."
But whatever, A-plot/B-plot. Gags about Starfleet habitually rolling up to seedy establishments in uniforms while looking for information, which is subverted by Captain Freeman being fucking genre savvy (also, wasn't she going to be promoted before getting arrested at the end of season two? I guess getting framed for a crime was deemed to be not very 'admiral-able'). Mariner ends up in a cave with a Klingon taking shelter from a crystal rain.
The pieces are there. Mariner was an ensign during The Dominion War. Two to three years before The Dominion War, Wesley Crusher left Starfleet, our Nick Locarno expy Tom Paris was recruited to Voyager, and Sito Jaxa was an ensign.
And Nick Locarno is in play.
We could have figured it out! We're in the narrative and emotional third act of this series (Tendi gave us the "We'll always be friends" speech last week)! Everyone regular just sat in a room trying to figure out how to help Mariner; we were one fruit salad analogy away from an intervention with Dr. Migleemoo!
Mariner escapes from Cardassian interrogation chambers for fun!
But Locarno is just another TNG reference, like Beverly Crusher. Background radiation. The season's story arc is something original to Lower Decks, which it's proven it's unafraid to do at this point. The series has no relation to "Lower Decks"
And then they fucking hit us with it; Beckett Mariner knew Sito Jaxa. They were friends. Then Jaxa died.
That's Mariner's trauma (that and The Dominion War).
And I didn't see it because I came to see Lower Decks as a series that stood on its own merits as a show while calling back to earlier Treks in a light, non-committal way. And I credit that solely to the writing of the show which leveraged both of those qualities to make an entertaining show that I like before, but now respect.
Just amazing stuff.

I love how very Star Trek this episode was. You have 4 different instances with the characters establishing empathy and understanding with others. Rutherford established communications with the fearsome cave creature. Boimler established a rapport with Leavy, the conspiracy theory nut that no one can tolerate. Mariner came to understand and bonded with the delta shift members. And the foursome made friends with a sentient moss that would have eaten them otherwise.
BTW, the Vendorians were introduced in TAS.

Star Trek: Lower Decks 4.08 "Caves"
* * * *
*
* * * * *
Okay, I admit, before this episode was announced, I never put any thought into how many Star Trek episodes are set in caves.
This was a fun one! I loved how it wasn’t just one cave mission—that they actually showed “flashbacks’ to previous caves missions. Plus, I loved the whole “bottle episode” vibe. (I know other episodes had that vibe, this one just seemed more obvious because the setting was a cave the entire time)
And they were all great! Rutherford getting pregnant (like Trip did in Enterprise) T’Ana actually bonding over the baby after saying she doesn’t like them, Boimler and Levy, the conspiracy nut, the “monster” protecting its baby (like the Horta in TOS), the Vendorians!, and finally the rapid aging situation that caused Mariner to bond with Karavitus
The best part was Tendi continually getting shot down because—a turbolift is NOT a cave!—and the (surprise) sentient moss wanting to hear her story.
Interesting bit of information on the Vendorians--that they like to test humanoids. (reminds me a little of the Organians in that respect)
Finally, regarding Levy—it amazes me that someone who spouts so many conspiracy theories can be a full Lt. Not only must be a really good mathematician, but he must keep his theories reserved for those of equal or lower rank than him. (plus, he was somehow right about the Vendorians)

Anne Nored (voices by Nichelle Nichols) Lt. Hikaru Sulu (voice by George Takei) Eng. Montgomery Scott, Gabler, Romulan Commander (voices by James Doohan) Nurse Christine Chapel, Enterprise Computer, M'Ress (voices by Majel Barrett)
Guest star: Ted Knight as Carter Winston/Vendorian
Synopsis:
During a patrol across the Romulan Neutral Zone, Captain Kirk gives orders to set a course to the encounter a small private ship to the rescue of its passenger. The ship is registed under Carter Winston, a social prominent figure who uses his fortune to help others. Winston has been lost for five years.
At the transporter room, Kirk, Dr. McCoy and Spock received Winston. McCoy gives thanks to him because he helped McCoy's daughter as one of many who survived of a famine due a crop faliure on Cerberus.Spock tells Winston that his fiancée, Security Officer, Lieutenant Anne Nored after verifying his identity tapes and a physical exam.
McCoy protest Spock's treatment to Winston but Kirk approves it telling it is a required procedure.
As Bones perform the medical examination, he notes his instruments are gaving strange readings. Like if Carter Winston is not human at all. McCoy resolves that it has to be an instruments' malfunction.
Lt. Nored makes her appearence at the medical room and had a conversation with Winston. He confesses to his former lover that he had an accidental crash on planet Vendor and he had suffered many surgeries, that he experienced many changes, so they would not going to marry her.
Then, Winston moves to Kirk's office and while the captain is busy trying to find the reports on the small starship, the Vendorian deguised as Carter Winston reveals his true self. The Vendorians are are a shape-shifter's race whose presence is forbidden in the Federation's territories.
He puts Kirk unconsious and assumes the captain's persona. Then he moves to the bridge and orders Sulu to set a course to Rator III no matter the helmsman's advice about crossing the Romulan Neutral Zone.
As he leaves the bridge, he moves to the doctor's office and does the same the he had done with Kirk. He assumes the identity of McCoy after putting the real one to sleep.
The real Captain Kirk wakes up and moves to the bridge realizing a time has passed since he get unconsious. He asks why they are crossing the Neutral Zone of the Romulans.
Spock presents the video recording of his orders and realizes this is all a trap from the Romulans. Then Kirk orders a turn away from the Netral Zone.
Kirk and Spock moves faster to the medical office guessing that the Vendorian is right there. As soon as the captain notice the presence of the spy, he ran away fast. He was intercepted by the Lt. Nored and he assumes the Carter Winston persona again and explain Anne whatever really happened to Winston and how the Vendorians absorb the memory and feelings of the subjects they stole their identity. Nored felt uncapable of firing to him with the phaser.
The Romulans make their appearence to rightfully claim the ownership of the Enterprise. Captain Kirk refuses to give the starship because he knows the presence of the Vendoiran spy is part of the Romulan's ploy to capture the his starship.
Meanwhile, the spy assumes the identity of one of the engineering perssonel and makes damage to the starship's shields. Scotty reports that the damage could take two hours to be repaired.
The Romulan Commander orders an attack to the Enterprise, but in a miraculous way, the shields are activated and stand the Romulans' attack. Spock asserts the spy has turned into the shield itself. Then the Vendoiran appears on his form to explain why he has done this mission. Kirk told him he is going to be judged by the Federation, but he is going to speak on his behalf.
Then, the captain put Anne Nored in charge of the Vendoiran spy.
Fascinating Facts:
The characterization of the Vendoiran spy who passed as Carter Winston was performed by actor Ted Knight. He was better known for his roles on TV shows like Ted Baxter in the Mary Tyler Moore Show and Henry Rush in Too Close for Comfort. Knight also was a regular voice actor for many other animated shows from Filmation Associates.
This is the first time Dr. McCoy's daughter is mentioned. Her name is Joanna and it was planned to introduce the character in The Original Series' episode “The Way to Eden”, but it was discarded.
The character of Uhura appeared briefly on this episode but without any dialogue. Nichelle Nichols made the voice characterization of Carter Winston's fiancée, Security Officer, Lieutenant Anne Nored.
The first time of the appearence of the Catian race character Lt. M'Ress voiced by Majel Barrett.
The voice of the Romulan Commander was performed by James Doohan.

One of my favorite bits of Star Trek trivia is that William Shatner played like six eight twelve different characters: James T. Kirk Good!Kirk Evil!Kirk Mirror!Kirk AndroidDoppleganger!Kirk Sam!Kirk Dr. Janice Lester!Kirk Ruk (impersonating Kirk's voice) Sargon (possessing Kirk) Garth of Izar (disguised as Kirk) A Vendorian (disguised as Kirk) Martia (disguised as Kirk) And yeah, I had to go to Memory Alpha to look up three or five of these.
characters who are actually two characters are so important to me. d.i.d. doppelgängers. possession. twins. clones. au versions of the same person. sometimes a guy is two guys and that is so so so important to me
