Experiences from an Ex-Vegan and A Vegan

Before my weight loss, I was into extreme diets. Now I’m not saying veganism is an extreme diet but it took extreme measures to get out of it. I started veganism based on social media influence as well as my understanding from research. I thought it would be a cool idea. I started out vegetarian and transitioned into vegan. It was extremely difficult at first because I had to give up a lot of food that I used to regularly eat. Day by day it got easier to avoid all of those foods. I lost a ton of weight the first week of being vegan. Then it led to my hair falling out and the loss of pigmentation from my skin. My energy was going low as time went on but I never thought anything was wrong. This led to me sleeping for an entire day. My mom grew worried and told me I needed to stop for the sake of my health. I didn’t realize that my health was slowly declining. I had to change for the sake of my health; so I turned away from veganism and ate meat again. I never knew the full reason why my health was declining at a rapid pace until my sophomore year of high school. A friend, who is vegan, told me that I never took supplements and also never ate enough that provided enough nutrients to my body. It was a shocking and relieving moment now that I understand what I did wrong. It was a learning experience and I know I will go back to being vegan soon. I wanted to talk about the benefits I felt when I was vegan: my skin was clearer, my body was a lot better, and I gained a new perspective on how our society treats animals due to high demand for foods.

I asked my good friend, Alicia, who is a vegan on how she started and what benefits she got from her current experience:

“I started because of many social media influences and seeing a lot of documentaries such as Cowspiracy. I thought I would never get into veganism but I did it for my health and animals. I started being vegan the very next day. At first it was extremely difficult because I had no idea what to eat. I only ate from what I saw on social media. I started with two bananas for breakfast and ate other foods throughout the day. However, I noticed that this wasn’t helping my body but damaging it; so I ate more fruit and added more grains to my diet. I don’t mean to get personal but I want you to add this. I grew up in a diabetic family and being vegan kept my blood sugar at a healthy range; I believe it was 70. A few tips I would give for people who are new to being vegan: the gym definitely helps and get yourself aware to cooking vegan recipes. Another personal thing I want you to add in here is People think to lose weight, you needs to eat less, eat more but what’s right for your body. A lot of people go on fad diets that don’t work. One thing I want to forewarn anyone who is new to veganism, the reaction you will receive from your family and friends who find out that you’re vegan will range from curiosity to hatred. Some people will be intrigued and some people will not like it at all. Don’t overthink it and do you! What are the benefits of being vegan? My cooking skills and my body have definitely improved. My mindset and eating have changed my perspective. From the research and fully experiencing being vegan has definitely impacted my life. I never thought so many people would take clothes and especially food for granted. It has definitely opened my eyes.”

I'm having steak with a side of guilt tonight. Switching to vegan slowly but surely @Regrann from @rhinosurfer - Death is part of the natural order. That said, it's one thing to take a life when survival depends on it, when it doesn't why isn't that murder? I believe it is. And since humans are "so evolved" from other species, and since we have a soul and they don't (sarcasm) why shouldn't we hold ourselves to a higher standard than pleasure (we should) because that's what it boils down another life suffers for a moment of pleasure in our mouths. And on top of that there are SO many super tasty vegan alternatives, plant based foods is the most creative culinary space right now. Additionally, meat consumption hurts humanity and our world via extreme pollution and inequitable allocation of food resources, we could end world hunger just by shifting to plant based foods. Humans kill for pleasure, for sport, even torture other humans and species for pleasure. It's unnatural and it's evil to inflict pain and suffering on another life. If you are not vegan please give this your attention and energy, really think it through and digest it. I used to think vegans were extreme, we can be extremely passionate even vindictive but if you consider why it would seem more justifiable than the counter opinions.
