I'm still v much in my BMTL feels and I'm curious - do you think Amy and Dan ever said I love you to each other?

Hi there! Believe it or not, you are not the first person to ask this question. I have written about this topic in other asks here, here, and here. My general take, which I expand on in those asks, is that I don't think they've said it out loud by the time BMTL takes place, but also that words aren't exactly how Dan and Amy prefer to demonstrate their feelings for one another.

Here’s how it all went down:

Dan has a nervous breakdown and is hospitalized. Jonah visits him in the hospital (flowers in hand). Amy informs them both that Dan has been fired. The Veep team (including Amy!) abandon Dan in London. Jonah and Dan return to the US on a commercial flight, their seats are together (Dan falls asleep on Jonah’s shoulder btw). They ride-share from the airport to Friendship Heights because they live in the same neighborhood (I can prove this). Jonah sees Dan’s exhaustion and depression, and awkwardly informs Dan he’s there for him if he needs anything. Dan insults him and tells him to fuck off, probably. They part ways. Jonah’s life continues as per usual—with the exception of Dan’s absence (ouch, Jonah misses his Danny). Meanwhile, Dan falls entirely apart. For a week straight he drinks himself sick and abuses benzos. Jonah checks on him after days of Dan not answering texts. Dan is in a bad way and Jonah encourages him to go inpatient. (Jonah has dealt with this before with his mom.) Dan relents and voluntarily checks himself in, but isn’t happy about it. He checks himself out after one day—because ��group therapy is bullshit”. He is undiagnosed bipolar 2, so he swings from depression to hypomania, and suddenly life is grand. (Thanks mood stabilizers 😀) He’s grown a beard and he’s back in Selina’s good graces (provided he shaves the beard 😒).

The next time he sees Jonah it’s at the debate:

“Dan flew over the cuckoo's nest, how’s it going buddy?”

i love debate so fucking much dan with a beard is so pretty and men who are slightly unhinged always get me,, manic poorly rehabilitated dan has my entire heart and it will forever make me so upset that there is absolutely no indication of what occurred between special relationship and debate with dan. it seems like he went to some kind of therapy and jonah's comments about s/h makes me think dan s/hd or attempted something which lines up with him seeming very poorly medicated and generally off, basically how everyone is when they get out of a psych hospital? i humbly request to hear the rest of veepblr's headcanons for between special relationship and debate

named catherine “catherine” like her mother in order to be able to yell said name in anger the way she never could yell back at her mother

the severe mommy issues make her need every single one of her staff to be emotionally involved in her. if she isn’t the center of their life, she gets anxious about it, even angry. she needs to be validated

Hello! I don't know if you've done this before (and apologies if you have and i've missed it) but I'd love to hear any headcanons you have about Théodwyn that you haven't included in already posted fics. (For no reason. There is no reason for this. Not fic relevant or anything ;)

Aah, Théodwyn! One of my favorite messy ladies of Tolkien! I think most of what I have worked out about her already exists either in Unwary (the history of her relationship with Éomund and the explanation of her death), this ask from you about Théoden’s sisters (general background on her place in the family and relationship to her siblings), and some of this story (which gets a bit into the role she played in Théodred’s life after Elfhild died and some little bits and pieces of her personality). I think you’re already familiar with all of that, so I’m sorry that I don’t have a lot more to offer on that front! But here are a few stray thoughts that I’ve collected over the course of time but don’t think I’ve used much or talked about directly:

-Since she tagged around Théoden so much as a little girl, she spent a lot of time around teenage boys at a very young age. As a result, she swore like a sailor (a habit she kept for her whole life, much to Morwen’s consternation), and enjoyed inventing her own particularly creative profanity. Think of her as being like Selena Meyer from Veep, but in Rohan. (Théodwyn getting into it with Thorongil about something: “That’s like trying to use your stupid lembas bread as a dildo. It doesn’t do the job and it makes a fucking mess!”)

-Speaking of Thorongil, she didn’t like him. She met him when she was a teenager, and she could spot right away that he was lying about who he was (though of course she had no way of knowing that he was Aragorn or what that actually meant). That made her distrust him, and she was very suspicious of his motives even as he only ever acted honorably in service of her father. One of her sisters suggested once that Thorongil might be a good match for her, and she hated the idea so much that she made it a point to be especially rude to him from them on, just to ensure he didn’t get any ideas. (She would have *died* to hear that her daughter thought herself to be in love with the same man many years later!!!)

-Because her parents and three oldest siblings had very positive views on Gondor (having lived or been born there) and kept many customs of Gondor in the royal house, Théodwyn took the contrarian position and was fairly anti-Gondor. She hated visiting Morwen’s family there and always complained about having to go. She leaned very hard into the traditions and culture of Rohan, embracing them much more fully than any of her siblings, and especially so after meeting Éomund, who took huge pride in descending from Eorl. She learned a lot about Rohan’s culture and history from Elfhild, specifically, since she was a native born Rohirrim, and that shared passion for their people was something that kept Elfhild and Théodwyn very close. 

I’m very excited to hear that you’re….not working on a fic involving Théodwyn! 😉 I look forward to reading it even though nope, you’re definitely not writing one! ❤️

I've been feeling feral about Amy ever since I made my mom watch Veep and explained a toned-down version of my interpretation of her. I'll probably do one of these for Selina too, but it's harder to compile because most of my thoughts about her are... trashier. So, here are my headcanons for Amy in the hailey_writes (c)literary universe.

There are Veep spoilers in here.

Pre-Canon

Amy was never given a canon birthday, so she shares a birthday with Anna Chlumsky: December 3.

Her family is shown to live near D.C., so I like to think she is from Maryland like Selina. When Selina started in the House, she was her district's Representative.

She is terrified of bees because her childhood best friend was killed by them.

She had few friends growing up because her peers thought she was too intense. She doesn't have many friends as an adult either, but it was worse in her youth.

In school, she was the classic anxious overachiever type of student. She was valedictorian of her high school class, and thought her life was over because she did not get into Harvard. She enjoyed Penn, though.

Family

No one in Amy's family likes or respects her at all. (I think that's just canon, though...) They have always been put off by how career-minded she is and how nerdy/academic she was growing up.

She is 5 years younger than her sister, Sophie. Although she does not like her either, she feels an obligation to try to create some sort of sisterly relationship with her. Sophie constantly makes fun of how gay she sounds when she talks about Selina and her job.

Selina

Amy was the 100th person Selina interviewed for her original job as a fresh college graduate. She hired her because she was impressed by her knowledge of politics for her age and her ruthless answers to behavioral questions. From the moment she first met Selina in person, Amy was smitten, although it would take her some time (months or even years, depending on what I feel like for the story) to realize it.

Amy has genuine feelings for Selina. It's a mix of codependency, low self esteem, mommy issues, admiration for her strength/power, the fact that Selina was the first person not to find her too intense, and the rare occasions when she's actually nice. Amy is pathetically eager to please her in any way she can. She also knows they can never have a public relationship, which is part of why it's so hard for her to leave the job, no matter how bad it sucks-- she doesn't want to give up Selina needing her in at least some way. The thing she wants most is to hear "I love you" from Selina, but deep down, she knows it won't happen.

The fact that she has genuine feelings makes her crazy jealous of anyone who comes near Selina, especially other women. Karen, Candi, and Minna are among her most hated people on earth. She doesn't know how to handle it because she is never Selina's official girlfriend.

The other person Amy hates the most for Selina-related reasons is Andrew. Not only is she jealous of his relationship with Selina, but she also hates him because he cheated on Selina while they were still married. It was the first time she ever saw Selina cry, and naturally Selina flung herself at clueless 22-year-old Amy for comfort, election night style.

She is somewhat touch averse and would prefer a large personal space bubble, but Selina is the major exception. This woman freaking loves touching Selina. (I have much evidence to support this.)

Dan

She was "official" with Dan for one week shortly before canon began, then walked in on him with a younger woman at his apartment, which is why she was soooo mad Selina hired him.

She starts to like him again when they are in Nevada for the recount. They are spending a lot of time together, and she wants to dull the pain of Selina immediately sending her hundreds of miles away after rejoining the team. When he sleeps with her sister instead, it becomes about wanting to hook up with him to "beat" Sophie.

Wanting to have his baby was temporary insanity brought on by all of her failures and rejections. I explain more at the end of this post.

Sexuality

Amy is bi with a stronger preference for women. While she did like Dan, we are shown that she did not like any of her boyfriends on the show. And her absolute devotion to Selina in the Iannucci seasons was just... wow. I go back and forth on whether or not she realizes this yet in my fics, though. Sometimes it's fun to play up how repressed she is because of her extreme dedication to her career, but sometimes it's better to have her aware because I don't feel like writing "gay awakening" stuff for a 30+ year-old.

When she is aware, then Selina was her original gay awakening, and she has been dying of thirst for over a decade.

She also has a praise kink. True hailey_writes enjoyers will notice that she gets called a "good girl" or is told she's being good for Selina at least once in every fic. She discovered this when she got egregiously horny the first time Selina ever complimented her.

She is always submissive when she's with Selina and will let her do anything she wants to her. With other women, she's happy in any role, but there are more boundaries than when she's with Selina. I think she'd prefer to be more dominant with men when she is actually into them, though, and is bored and detached when she isn't (like with Ed and Buddy). She hasn't let herself really explore her desires much, though.

She has a thing for older people in general but is not exclusively into them.

Poor Amy goes through a lot of dry spells :(

Post-Canon (I'm Sorry in Advance)

Selina killing gay marriage for Buddy's endorsement breaks what's left of Amy's heart. They have one last explosive hookup fueled by hate. (I very highly recommend this fic. It had my jaw on the floor. I don't think I can ever do one better than this, seriously.) Amy does not speak to her for decades after leaving the White House following Jonah's impeachment, although she thinks about their time together often throughout the rest of her life. She bonds with Catherine over Selina's betrayal but never tells her what she used to do with her mom.

Disillusioned with politics, she goes out to the Bay Area (this part is soooo specifically for me, sorry) for a while and works in venture capital. She has a serious relationship with that Clovis woman. It ends once Amy's firm loses billions of dollars in some crypto nonsense, causing the woman to find her incompetence staggeringly unattractive.

After losing all her money and having a deep existential crisis, she returns to D.C. This is when she marries Bill Ericsson because he is there, and she has nothing better to do. She takes a garbage political columnist job, never runs a campaign again, and gets really into raising greyhounds. Their marriage is very frigid.

When Selina is dying in the distant future, Amy does decide to go see her, even though she has not forgiven her at all. She is the only person who visits and ends up holding her hand as she passes away. She bitterly realizes that Selina ended up so irrelevant after she left office that they could have had a relationship after all, if Selina hadn't ruined everything. No one would have known or cared.

No Veep characters are allowed a happy ending, even if I love them a whole lot :(

One Thing That Really Bothered Me In Canon

The trope where a female character says she doesn't want kids and then ends up having them, or in Amy's case, deeply regretting not having them, bothers me. She goes from not wanting them in the early seasons, to making one offhand remark about freezing her eggs after Mandel takes over, to pregnant and wanting to keep it. There is no character development to bridge that gap, so it just comes off as the same tired (and honestly, misogynistic) trope to me. So no, I don't think she actually spends her entire life regretting her abortion. This essay does a good job of explaining why I don't like that kind of storyline.

I think it would be natural for her to feel some angst about getting older and losing the option to have kids, but that's the extent of it. My Amy Brookheimer would not be making sad comments about her childlessness in the distant future because the whole "I need to have Dan's baby right now, even though I've never wanted kids" arc was temporary insanity. Nothing was going right for her in seasons 6 and 7. The campaign she managed lost, she didn't get to try again for Selina's 2020 campaign, she was engaged to a closeted gay conservative guy, Selina hated her, Dan made her feel undesirable... Definitely enough to drive a gal insane! And we know she was losing it anyway because she joined Jonah's campaign right afterwards.

random suzerain thought of the night, but i love that despite how assertive and blunt ciara can be (some may say 'hostile' or 'combative', but like, is she or is she just a woman standing up for what she believes), she's very good with kids. obviously, as the minister of education it's clear that she really cares about kids' wellbeing, but as we see in the game with the little girl, she really knows how to make them feel safe and comfortable, especially young girls.

by comparison, i kinda headcanon that nia is like, not great at dealing with kids. not that she doesn't like them or wouldn't want to have one some day with ciara, i think that she's just too used to dealing with adults that she's just completely awkward around them and probably has no idea how you even talk to them without sounding absolutely ridiculous. i can totally imagine a veep-like scenario where she accompanies ciara to a school and ciara introduces her to one of the little girls there, and nia's all sweating trying to figure out what to say cause what do kids that age even like.

'sooo, uhm. do you like, know about the three branches of government yet, or like...?' 'nia.' 'I DON'T KNOW, CIARA. what do they even teach them, shapes and colors?'

ok just to add - I have a headcanon where Amy visits the office and Summer-From-Ohio-comms is in a meeting with BKD. Someone asks Amy for a quick consult and she was her usual snarky self and Dan is so hot and bothered and proud so when the people asked who she was he couldn't stop a grin from his face and say. 'That's my wife.'

Hahaha, awww, this is very cute. It probably wouldn't even need to be Summer-from-Ohio-comms...I'm sure this sort of thing happened before in BKD history 😉 I'm so glad you're loving the story so much to have your own headcanons!

in veep we have selina's party and then the opposition party, selinas party is represented with blue and they're pro abortions (kind of) and pro clean jobs etc etc and then the opposition party is blue and presumably against all this stuff, but then jonah runs as veep for the blues w/ his platform of being anti "muslim math" and shit, which leads me to believe that politics in veep dont have a democratic-republican binary as we understand it. technically they dont really talk about things being liberal or conservative in it either right? so that spectrum cannot really be used to categorize political stuff either.

anyways we know the broad strokes of history are the same, ww2 happened, ww1 happened, major figures like hitler buddha lincoln washington whatever they all existed

veep also takes place in the same universe as the thick of it and in the loop so thats something, there is also a primary party and then the opposition party in the thick of it so i will look into that

anyways there is something fundamentally different about the veep universe than our world even pre-canon and i intend to get to the bottom of it 🫡

HEADCANONS

the story goes that the morgan family came from nothing. before lincoln city, at least. formerly the moreno family, they changed their name and settled in small town oregon for a fresh start. they were seeking the american dream. little did they know then just how quickly they’d get it.

the morgans were a part of the founding of the town and originally became the mayoral family by default. only in the past few generations have children been born and bred for the role. isa has known from birth what her destiny is, so there’s never been any use in her finding other passions.

the valles have been in real estate development for generations, so business/politics is truly in isa's blood.

isa has always gotten everything she’s wanted in terms of material things, but she tends to struggle with making positive connections. she can frequently be described as “too much” - too dramatic, too argumentative, too selfish. though she was somewhat popular in high school, how much of that was because she was wealthy and well connected? college wasn’t much better for her in terms of genuine friendships. upon graduation she permanently moved back to town to learn the ropes.

isa was also not the best at actual school back in the day (math is hard!), but she was very involved in extracurriculars - in particular, drama, dance, and debate (co-captain).

if she could've picked her profession, she would've moved out to la to become an actress. instead, she spends her days pretending to be in a new spinoff of succession that's also a spinoff of the west wing… and veep.

she is legitimately good at business. people don’t expect it of her, but she’s very good at working within the political landscape of business relationships to get what she wants.

girlboss feminism has had an indisputable impact on isa. every time she questions whether she’ll be any good at being mayor, she just has to take a sip from her mug that says “the boss” and whisper her mantra - gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss.

isa has a knack for planning events. her family has held a private gala or two (or one every year) and isa in more recent years has taken over the planning for it. she even spent one summer doing some basic event help with the rest of the local government to really solidify her own connections. it was also there that she discovered she has a few issues with control. apparently there IS a wrong way to fold napkins.

she dates, but not often. her standards are high and if you're not in her tax bracket, it's likely you're more of a networking opportunity than a potential suitor.

her little dad-approved community betterment programs are 1) renovating the local community theatre, which was shut down a few years ago after someone got electrocuted, and 2) banning plastic bags and plastic straws, to save the environment.

the one that got away. isa's had a fair amount of bad relationships, but sometimes things do end for other reasons. maybe their lives were going in different directions. maybe they really were a match made in heaven but she's the one who messed it up.

How do you think Grima would dress in a modern AU? I admit that I tend to imagine him dressing super-warm (man's always cold no matter the temperature), wearing lots of layers that hide his frame, lots of dark color palettes (blacks, greys, that sorta thing) with the occasional splash of color (like golds, maybe greens or purples every once in a blue moon), but I'm interested to hear how you think the snake man would dress in a modern setting! And how would it stack up next to Eomer's wardrobe?

Eomer: I have 500 colours, though many are variations of reds, greens, blues, and golds.

Grima: i wear black.

Eomer: I know. You're my tiny snaky summer goth.

We're talking Grima at the height of his power? Whatever form that might take in this world. I think he dresses well. One of my annoyances with the films is how he is dressed (the costume team is phenomenal and did a fantastic job, but I didn't like PJ's vision).

He comes from nothing, is self-made to a certain degree, and aside from his skills/education/etc., he relies on people's good opinion of him and trust in him to succeed in life. Therefore, he's going to dress to impress, so to speak.

Visual representation of status and power are important, especially in the societies Rohan is modelled on and I don't see why Rohan would be any different. Therefore, Grima as chief advisor to the king, and whatever other sundry roles in the household/court he may have held, would dress accordingly. He represents the crown! he needs to look the part.

His face might be unfortunate, but his clothing would be immaculate. He also would dress with psychology in mind: how can I use my appearance to dominate the room/impose my will/manipulate people/get what I want etc.

Anyway, in modern day the same logic still applies. So he'd be wearing designer stuff if he can manage it. Regardless, everything would be well tailored and good quality. Certainly on the warm side, as I also subscribe to the fandom headcanon that he's cold all the time.

I also absolutely agree that his palate would remain dark - lots of blacks and greys and blues-so-dark-could-be-black. I can see him adding a bit of dark purples or maroons to the mix. Maybe dark, forest green. Rich and dark.

In his off hours, that's where I see the layering coming in. That man would own an absurd amount of sweaters that he lounges in. Eomer is like, 'There is no way you need fifteen sweaters.' and Grima is like, 'excuse me, I own eighteen, I'm currently wearing three of them. And yes, I do need them.' Eomer replies, 'It's August! It's 32 degrees out there!' Grima bundles up more and nests on the couch.

Eomer: ahhh my weird snake boy(?)friend(?) who is unable to regulate his internal temperature.

Grima: some of us aren't walking furnaces. Eomer.

Grima has been known to steal Eomer's clothes which are too large for him but it allows greater layering opportunities when home and watching bad tv shows.

Eomer: I was planning on going out with Theodred for drinks and I was going to wear that cardigan you have on.

Grima: Too bad. Find a new cardigan, horse boy. I'm wearing it while I'm being anti-social and watching VEEP. I have four other layers on under it. I'm so pleased with myself.

Eomer: you are a very, very strange person.

Grima drinks his post-work beer and slides deeper onto the couch.

For comparison to Eomer, it's mostly colour contrast. Eomer wears more colours on the whole, and while they're also on the rich side they're not nearly so dark. I suspect their sense of style is very different but I'd have to sit on it and think about it before I could land on exact distinctions between them. I can also see Eomer, on the whole, going more casual than Grima. He'd wear jeans to work, nice chic fashionable formal jeans, but jeans regardless. Compared to Grima who is always in proper dress slacks etc.
