Sometimes I like to think about how Vee is a traumatized shapeshifting monstrosity from another dimension who canonically graduated from Normal People School. Girl got a passing grade in being regular. Something normal to want and possible to achieve but not in a sarcastic way

It's a delicious kind of irony that a traumatized shapeshifting monstrosity (affectionate) from another dimension who was raised in a prison ended up fitting in better in the human realm than Luz. Like. H u h.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again! Vee was SO lucky she impersonated Luz because 1) if she did anything weird, everyone just dismissed it as being Luz, 2) she was immediately sent to "crash course in fitting in" camp, giving her all the tools she needed to act like an average human and 3) if anyone noticed her not acting like Luz, they could just chalk it up to the camp doing its job. Not to mention she got a kickass mom who wouldn't kick her out for being a snake person. Vee hit the impersonation jackpot.

But anyway, Vee being just the most average person alive, just such a normal girl is so fun. You go to the Noceda house and it's like "the weirdest girl you've ever met and her equally weird friends" "Super Nerd Camila Noceda who will clock you with a baseball bat" and then Vee whose hobby is Being A Normal Fellow Human. And then you look to the left, and her partner, who went to the same "be normal" camp, is a goth tarot-card-reading witch who works in a museum.

Only ten days until Flapjack has been dead for a whole year, how do you feel about that?

Unpopular opinion but "Thanks To Them" was the best of the three episodes we got for Season 3.

You and I can agree on that. The tone was really well done, even if I disliked the hwy they essentially turned Hunter into a punching bag for the writers. The aesthetic is incredible, and as like that Vee, Masha, and Camila got more screen time. It’s intense and suspenseful, and I love the Halloween vibe.

And it absolutely sucks that they killed Flapjack. It was cruel, unnecessary, and sent a bad message to victims of abuse. (a.k.a. That your abuser will show up when everything is going well and ruin things for you.) Then they didn’t even do anything with it!

R.I.P. Flapjack. You deserved better, Bud.

Do you hc Hunter and Vee becoming siblings? Because I think her shapeshifting has fun potential in a werewolf au, if she's especially comfortable around him.

The short answer is yes, but it takes a long time because they both see each other as threats and they're both very protective over the same group of people. The longer explanation is under the cut haha

In general, I think Vee would recognize the smell of the Golden Guards from when she was imprisoned on the Boiling Isles, and this would be her way of figuring out that Hunter used to work for Belos. It brings up a lot of bad memories and the smell of him is incredibly stressful for her. Hunter has a similarly good sense of smell but his source of stress is that his instincts know this is another magical creature and immediately raises his metaphorical hackles without him realizing why

I was talking with Cal about it and decided that it would be a very interesting dynamic if they both saw each other as dangers and both tried to protect the household from each other. They watch each other like hawks. Vee would be affected more severely by the pressure, paranoia, and trauma, and it's Luz who ends up getting them to talk through their issues. A lot of their first talk is just Hunter explaining his Golden Guard history, apologizing, and them humanizing each other.

There has to be a lot more time for them to really settle down and be truly comfortable, but I think it would be a bit like Amity and Hunter's relationship in the sense that they gain mutual respect for one another even if they're not quite friends. Later on in TTT, they will be good resources for reassuring each other since they do share similar trauma regarding being trapped, being called monsters, and being forced to do terrible things for survival. I think Vee will be a big help in helping to break Hunter's stigmas about werewolves early on in the healing process (not completely, but enough to give him the wiggle room to work through the rest on his own)

It would probably be post-WAD that they're close enough to consider each other family (and I do love Noceda sibling headcanons) at which point yes they absolutely would have little cuddle piles :) I'm just trying my best not to rush the process of acceptance, which is difficult when the show only gives them three months in the Human Realm. So realistically, a lot of progress would only be made after WAD, but I will still indulge and draw TTT Hunter in Situations even if they wouldn't be totally accurate.             That being said. I’d have either swapped Vee and Hunter’s positions, or just replaced Hunter with Vee and have her take both scenes because realistically? That’s Luz’s sister! That’s her fellow Noceda!

            We already have plenty of Hunter scenes, including with Luz, and we’re going to get more Hunter scenes, including that powerful point he makes at the end of TTT to support Luz; But Vee barely got anything! Like it genuinely agonizes me that we never get to see Luz and Vee properly interact after Yesterday’s Lie, when they’re explicitly family members. I appreciate how the epilogue and those background photos at least play into it more, but the line “You’re family now” would feel more fitting with Vee.

            (I just wish we got any equivalent scene to King becoming a Clawthorne for Vee; In fact I specifically held off on updating Vee’s tag as #Vee Noceda in the hopes of it! But alas, after the finale I had to just go back and do it myself…)

            Have her meet up with Luz, have Vee be confident about taking on Belos because she’s tailored to killing him on her own, if need be! And then he isn’t there in the basement, and Vee takes the moment to focus on what she originally intended; To apologize to Luz for taking her loneliness for granted, for calling her selfish. And of course she does because after feeling like an outcast amongst the Hexsquad, only for them to accept her, it helps Vee better understand what Luz went through, especially now that she’s lost her original friends.

            Luz apologizes for that last bit, talks about finding a way to fix this (and maybe picking up on and teasing over the Masha crush because she’s been there). She accepts Vee’s apology, but also low-key dismisses it in a “Don’t worry about it” way, because in reality Luz agrees with Vee’s past outburst now, and so she appreciates the sentiment! But really, Vee was right and she shouldn’t be deluding herself into considering otherwise.

            That adds to how this scene is like Luz’s prior scene with the other Noceda in her family; It seems sweet at first, but then you realize the tragic hidden meaning when we see that video diary. Just as Camila’s advice to Luz takes a dark meaning when we realize her takeaway is to self-exile herself, Luz cementing her bond with Vee takes a dark meaning when we realize she’s preparing herself to appreciate her new sister, because when Luz exiles herself from her friends, Vee and Camila are all she’ll have left. So may as well embrace that, look forward to it, start working on it! Luz is planning to make that entry later that night.

            And if it’s a version where Hunter takes Vee’s place at the Gravesfield Historical Society, then like it makes sense! If Luz is isolating herself from her friends and now taking this all the way through, then of course Hunter ends up filling in the gap she left behind; I have more thoughts on this is in another post, but yeah.

I think that the show should have established that Camila tried to help Luz over the years before deciding on the camp.

An issue with Luz and Camila's characters is that there are a lot of unknowns in there lives before the show, or at least it's just not made as clear as it could be. Exactly how long ago was it that Manny died? How bad was the bullying Luz faced? Is Luz diagnosed or not? Heck we don't even know the names of most of the people here. Like why did only one of Vee's camp friends get a name (and even that only happened like a year after they debuted) and what about the kids at Luz's school, particularly the two nerdy who talked to her in TtT.

To get back to the topic I brought up at the beginning of the post. Leaving things unknown like this can prevent people from being as understanding and sympathetic to the characters as they could be. Not showing Luz being bullied is one example. Camila not being shown taking measures to help Luz pre-camp is another.

Here's how I'd fix it.

Just establish that Camila took steps to help Luz but things didn't work out whether because Luz screwed up, or something out of their control happened to mess it up. Book Clubs, Art Therapy, tutors to help her in the school subjects she struggled with, maybe her trying out for the Cheerleading team and school play were her ideas. All these things that could be good outlets for Luz and opportunities to form friendships, and they failed for one reason or another.

So when she's suggested to camp, she takes it because nothing else went well.

I know its impossible to write a character perfectly so that everyone will like them. But I think this would help.

I feel like Luz “Separation Anxiety” Noceda would be a bit dismayed upon learning that Vee and her friends are going to graduate and go to college at the end of the school year (presuming that Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior are Human Realm Exclusive Terms)

Like “oh my entire social life actually revolves around you and your friends because I’m too awkward and different to know how to approach people and am too nice and accommodating to any and everyone because of The Horrors to tell anybody to back off if they get too nosy so truly I cannot fathom how I’m going to function in a school setting without you but it’s Fine :) I’m really happy for you and not at all going to cry about this :)))”

Maybe she’ll join the school band to try and become socially independent and then just get really sad cause she misses Raine :(((

i think she'd have a kind of tough time in a school environment to begin with, honestly. i made a post to that effect earlier but decided it was too depressing and deleted it.... but! since i ended up thinking a LOT about how her school experience would be handled. the gist was:

she'd have a really good 504 plan in place -- 504 plans are written plans that help students with disabilities stay in a normal classroom. it would have accommodations like her getting pre-written notes about what they'd discuss in class, a slightly separate desk to avoid being unexpectedly touched by other students, blanket permission to step out into the hallway if she gets nervous, extra time on tests, etc.

she'd purposefully be matched with the friendliest teachers and the easiest graders, people who are Very willing to talk with her about her needs. and also to say "i'm not upset with you." probably the really relaxed english teacher from TTT is one of them. this occasionally does remind her of raine and make her feel incredibly guilty/sad :(

and i think she'd have a one-on-one aide assigned to sit with her and show her what she's supposed to do in a classroom and help her navigate between classes. most likely this person is with her all day except for during lunch periods, when she takes her break....

this definitely marks luz Other by the student body (as having a paraprofessional does for every kid in a mainstream classroom) but she actually does not mind it! it feels like being guarded & she's grateful to have someone telling her what to do.

(in my head the aide's name is miss delilah and she's an OC who exists purely to be really kind and understanding. because please god give luz this.)

even with all of this, though....

classrooms are not Easy for luz. in the canon, she has CRIPPLINGLY hyperactive ADHD and can't focus on anything going on. she's weird and offputting and exuberant and causes ten million problems.

here, she has a LOT of baggage from belos. not just the physical trauma, but also everything she's internalized about How To Behave. she's learned a lot about how not to annoy him. and school is a public-facing event, which means she's in full Gracious Princess Mode. trying to make herself as small and unobtrusive as possible

so all of her concentration goes into Sitting Still and Being Quiet. she can't anxiously stim without disrupting the classroom, she can't chatter without annoying people, she can't chew through pencils or rip up paper without attracting Concern.

this is. incredibly stressful!! for her!!

stressful enough that she can't really retain anything the teacher says in classes. her homework is always done and her notes are always neat, but her quiz and test scores are Abysmal. because she either can't process the questions or can't remember the answers. because being in the classroom is Hard

which just adds another layer of stress. luz is like. PLEASE don't tell my mom. please please please please please don't tell my mom :(

vee doesn't really understand this -- she Loves the classroom. loves to sit at a desk and participate in discussion. loves to do worksheets. loves to get good grades and be a pleasure to have in class. Behaving Normally is a lot less stressful for vee than it is for luz.

which makes luz even clingier, when she can have lunch with vee or see her between classes. she's microdosing on being in the company of someone who feels Normal And Fine. and who has friends who clearly feel Normal And Fine. and who don't mind if luz is weird around them

luz being like oh!! you're going away. i see :) um. congratulations!! i'll be right back. i need to lock myself in the shower and cry so hard i throw up.

Vee is the most useless character in The Owl House.

Just think, her only role is to cover the plot hole about Camilla not looking for her missing daughter during season 1, but further..???

I still don't understand why Dana decided to let Vee stay in the human realm in TTT. It's really illogical decision, including the fact that Hexsquad need every person able to fight. I think it would be more logical if Vee came back in the demon realm instead of Camilla, because she can do more. She is a dang basilisk, she can shape shift, she can fight and get magic from others, it's a very powerful ability. But somewhy Luz decided to take a housewife in the demon realm where a random plant can kill you.

How I feel about this character

She's one of my favourite characters!!! I think Willow, Matt and Camila are my top three. I remember rewatching Yesterday's Lie during the season 2 hiatus and being like "Yall....Camila is actually SO fucking epic, I can't wait to see more of her in season 3" and then she CONTINUED to be epic!!! The Camila enjoyers got fed so well!!! Also that dream sequence she has in TTT is like the only scene in the show I ever cried at. It makes me INSANE. It's amazing that a simple offhanded remark that Camila was bullied as a child adds so much context to EVERYTHING she does. I fucking ADORE her!!!

All the people I ship romantically with this character

I went through a Darius/Camila phase at one point. I'm not all that personally invested anymore but I can still objectively see the appeal. She's a single mom and widow. He's a big tall handsome muscley man with a mysterious past and a magical element. Like I can picture them as an Elaine Duillo romance novel cover. See the vision!! She deserves this!!!

But like. Truly. Madly. Deeply. I still think about Camila and Manny sometimes. Do you know that one deleted line from a storyboard. When Camila said "He was the first person who saw me for exactly who I was. Until that point, the world hadn't been so kind...."

I'm still upset at how Camila was treated. Luz has no idea how lucky she was that Vee was there to take her place, otherwise she would have been coming home to her face on a missing person flyer.

And I couldn't stand how some parts of the fandom made her out to be this terrible parent to justify Luz staying on the Boiling Isles permanently. Like they mainly hated on her for sending Luz to camp but I always saw it that Camila didn't really have a choose because it was either "Hey, send your daughter to this place so she can learn some goddamn self-control or we'll be forced to expel her for her actions," which was really lenient on the school's part. And for pleading with Luz to stay with her when not only did she just found out that the person that was living under her roof wasn't her daughter, but that Luz chose to stay in the Demon Realm and thought that she was the one that drove her daughter away.

But no, all of that gets ignored in favor of showing Luz being dejected and Camila being the one to apologize to Luz for not understanding her.

Camila is one of those characters who was treated the worst in toh. Not to mention that before TTT the fandom very often talked about her as an abusive mother. But I've said it several times and I'll repeat it again: Luz was not a cute kitten with harmless hobbies that no one understood. She not only posed a direct threat to herself and others, she could not fully live in society, communicate with people. And for a mother, damn, the well-being of her child is important. I hate that she had to apologize for that. For the fact that she wanted to help her daughter integrate into society and save her from exclusion (I do not live in the USA, so correct me if anything, but as far as I know, exclusion is not an empty phrase there). And Vee... No matter how cute and potentially interesting she was, she shouldn't have been in the show. Luz needed to face the consequences of her spontaneous decision. Why did even Anne's unintentional disappearance do more harm to her parents (who had support all this time) than a conscious decision of Luz for her single mother?

Pumpkin picking

Sooo this is the fic ive been working on!! It's a silly lil huntlow/hexsquad fic that takes place the day before TTT!! Also it's my first fic posted here, so don't be too harsh pls

"So, are we there yet?"

"Hunter, this is your third time asking", Amity sighed. "However, are we there yet?"

"Yeah, it's right over this hill!" Luz said. "But i wanna do a dramatic reveal, so you have to climb up the hill first, and i'll show you and you all will gasp!"

"Whatever makes you happy", Amity said. She hasn't seen Luz smiling much in the past couple of weeks, but this brought her so much joy, so Amity didn't mind some theatrics.

Luz stood on the top of the hill, covering most of the field beside it with her arms and body. She was wearing a red shirt with some bats, a black denim jacket, a pair of black shorts, her usual white boots and unmatched striped socks. It was pretty warm for Gracefield that autumn, so she took advantage of that. Luz watched her friends line up in front of her and took a good look at them - they all decide to wear halloweeny outfits for the ocasion.

Amity was wearing and orange turtleneck, a black skirt with buttons and black heeless shoes. She tucked her hair back with a headband, Sabrina Spellman-style, and looked determined(and extremely beautiful). Gus stood next to her, and he was practically shaking with excitement. He dressed up in an orange sweatshirt with a pumpkin face drawn on it, a pair of black jeans and black converse shoes. Hunter slightly calmed Gus by putting his hand on his shoulder. Hunter himself was wearing an orange shirt with another white long-sleeved shirt under it, light blue jeans and a pair of red crocks, which looked horrendous, but Luz was happy that Hunter was discovering his fashion sence(even if it's awful). Willow, who was standing beside him, was rocking a long black dress with many layers. She tied her hair into a small ponytail, and, for some reason, her footwear of choice was a pair of yellow rubber boots. Luz perfectly knew the energy that was sparking between Willow and Hunter - these two, for sure, wanted to hold hands, but couldn't bring themselves to do it. Vee was absent - she said something about dishes to wash, but Luz was pretty sure it was her strange secret fear of pumpkins.

"A-a-and, you can look!", Luz put her hands down, and the gang saw a field of pumpkins.

"This is not as exciting as i expected..." Hunter said.

"This is just as exciting as i expected!", Gus yelled.

"Okay, first we need to split! I'm going with Amity and Gus," Luz said with a sly smile. "And Hunter is going with Willow! Okaythatsitthelastonetogettothefieldisaloser!"

After blurting it out, she grabbed Amity's and Gus' hands and ran down the hill. Hunter and Willow rushed after them. They gave up almost immediately and decided to walk slowly and take their time.

The first minutes alone with Willow were awkward. Her eyes were so green, full of confusion and wonder. She had a beautiful smile on her face. All the orange around them highlighted her black dress. All Hunter could think about is how much he wanted to hold her hand. And all he did was trying to stare at pumpkins, not at her.

But then she said:

"Look, this pumpkin looks exactly like our abomination teacher did after we beat their team at flyer derby!"

That just made Hunter burst out laughing and broke the tension.

"Can we not choose this one then? That guy creeped me out. Maybe we should take that one that looks like a coffee cup."

"A cup of pumpkin spice latte!"

"Exactly!"

"I love pumpkin spice," Willow said, hiding her eyes away. "Maybe we should get some someday. Like, um, just the two of us..."

Hunter knew what that meant - Luz watched all those crappy romcoms all the time, and when one character wanted to date another character, this is exactly what they said. This meant a lot.

Willow wanted to date him.

This thought filled Hunter's entire mind and heart. His face was so red he was sure it's actually on fire. Panic overtook him, and the best he could do is say:

"Yea...um...i need to go to...wash my flowers and...sorry..."

He walked away, slowly at first, but then just started running.

What was he running from? A girl he really, really likes liked him back... Maybe that actually was the reason. No one's ever looked at him like Willow. No one talked to him like her - like she knew everything about him, and accepted all of him. And that novelty was scary, even though Hunter knew that-

He tripped and fell on his face. Great. Absolutely what he needed right now.

"Oh my titan, dude, you found the best one!"

It was Gus' voice. Hunter turned around and saw Luz, Amity and Gus. The latter was holding the pumpkin Hunter tripped on.

"I totally agree!" Amity said. "It's big, and tough, and just the right color!"

Willow reached the group. "Does anyone want to ask Hunter if he's okay, guys?"

"I'm fine", Hunter replied. He looked at Willow, who was so worried about him, and still cared deeply about him even after he ran from her, and added: "And yes. I'd love to go with you very much."

"Go...Where?" Luz said, confused.

"It's a long story," Hunter said. He stood up. "Let's grap this pumpkin and head home."

Him and Willow were holding hands the entire trip back.
