in valyrian fashion i think dragon motifs wouldve been subtle. because yeah it's an empire built on dragons, like the dothraki are built on horses, but everyone knows this already--dragons are the air you breathe and the water you swim in. theres no need to wear winged jewelry and blazon dragons into your dresses unless you think the designs themselves are cool. i think it's only really during the time of the targaryens that you get court fashion really centered around the motif of dragons front and center in the clothign to show "look! we're the dragonriders! we deserve to rule the realm because of our giant scaly beasts so we're gonna wear scaly armor and winged headdresses and have claw designs on our doublets!" am i making sense?

I would love to see more Roman influences on Valyrian culture, since that's what grrm was inspired by. imagine the clothes, the art, the buildings with Roman influences - wouldn't it be gorgeous to see our Targs like that?
#i am not a targ stan#i am however very interested in Roman history#and i would love to see how the targs who hold onto their valyrianness would merge that with andal fashion#asoiaf#hotd#old valyria

A collage of Old Valyrian fashions in GOT Universe
Valyria has nods to Rome btw.
Known for its legacy of dragons and battalions, Valyria boasts as one of the Ancient powerhouse civillizations in GOT Universe. The Valyrians are a brave people, with immense connections to dragons. Having founded the Valyrian Empire centuries before Daenerys was born, Aegon I Targaryen, and the Valyrian Empire has helped shape the course of the GOT Universe history for centuries to come.

@gameofthronesdaily House of the Dragon / SEASON 2 APPRECIATION WEEK
DAY 2: COSTUMES — The costume designer, Caroline McCall, wanted the silhouettes of Rhaenyra and Alicent's costumes to be very different to represent the fashion worn in King’s Landing and Dragonstone while also highlighting the rift in their relationship.
For Dragonstone, Caroline was heavily inspired by the silhouette of the Dragonkeepers and the brutalist style of Dragonstone and the model of Old Valyria.
Whereas in KL, the fashion is much more classically medieval inspired, with very figurative and naturalistic embroidery.

thank god for elden ring honestly because its really busted my eye open for grrm's thing for dualities in his writing. like you cant make me look at radagon & marika's dual natures and then have me turn back around and look at a series literally titled a song of ice and fire and not start noticing how much he plays this parallelism game here. the knights of the vale behind their gates of the moon to the dornishmen in sunspear. the dothraki and ironborn as cultures built on pillaging off of others while the dothraki way fears the sea and where horses cannot travel, the ironborn dislike being tethered to the shores for too long, or their shared aversion to spilling blood as a spiritual belief leading them to find ways to kill in a much more brutal fashion. the titular icy other who shall never be named to rhllor the lord of light and fire. the last children of the forest finally found so far north as the last dragons are hatched in the known world. robb stark has the world in his hands and loses it all for a nobody named jeyne. theon greyjoy who has nothing left and yet saves a nobody named jeyne in order to regain what little self he can. the ice covered wall to keep the wights out to the hot burning sea that holds the doom of valyria. you take the black and you take the white its all the same vows to guard the realm or guard the monarch, never have a family, but the difference is a matter of prestige and location. the blood of old valyrians being dragonlike and few of them left with an almost ethereal nature to them vs the blood of the first men passing down the chance to have the ability to warg and be connected with nature itself. following with that the exile of the last targaryens and distrust of their "mad" nature despite formerly being desired & seen as godlike, compared to the first men's descendants being mostly wildlings who are shunned and kept away from most of westeros. there's really nothing i love more than a good parallel

Many fans often envision The Conquerors in a Byzantine fashion, and it's quite fitting. The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, persisted as the continuation of the Roman Empire, surviving the challenges that led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD. Similarly, The Conquerors, the Targaryen family, survived the Doom of Valyria, making them the heirs and continuation of the Valyrian Freehold.
SO, If we picture ancient Valyrians donning attire akin to 1st-century Romans, like stolla dresses and palla cloaks for women and togas for men, it logically follows that The Conquerors, as inheritors of the empire, would don Byzantine clothing in their portrayal.
NOW! although the 6th-century Byzantine imperial costume boasts simplicity in silhouette, draping, and cut, it is truly elevated by its lavish bejeweled and embellished details.
Take, for instance, Empress Theodora's state costume: a white stola adorned with intricate gold and jewel embellishments at the hem, a purple paludamentum heavily embroidered with a luxurious gold border, and a prominently jeweled collar crowning the cloak—an iconic symbol of Byzantine fashion. Completing her regal ensemble is a headdress with cascading ropes of pearls. Meanwhile, her ladies in waiting don similar attire, albeit with fewer embellishments.
All in all, Byzantine fashion is all about garments embroidered with gold and adorned with pearls and jewels.
And it is this extravagant opulence I wanna see The Conquerors in - Aegon adorned in a blood-red paludamentum pinned gracefully on his right shoulder, while Visenya and Rhaenys don heavily bejeweled collars and intricate hairstyles.
However, it doesn't have to be overly historically accurate. I believe that as long as certain 'iconic' Byzantine fashion elements are incorporated, the silhouette can be altered. Take, for example, the 19th-century depictions of Empress Theodora:
While most of them lack accuracy (with Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant's version being the closest to historical credibility), they successfully capture the essence of luxury, gold, and opulence.
Conclusion: I think if I were to draw The Conqueror sisters, I wouldn't necessarily adhere strictly to the historically accurate shapeless, modest silhouette. However, I would definitely strive to convey the essence of luxury and ornamentation in my depiction.
