I heard in the canteen that the humans once used a few antique combustion engines to start one of their portable stars. Any truth to the rumor?
Ah jeez, that was one hell of a day for that guy.
Yes and no. Where do I even being...
Okay. So this place up in Greenland called, uh... I'm gonna butcher this so bad, Hjeilhornhentrotnenheim, has an engineering museum, right? Right, and the guy in charge, his name is, ah fuck this is gonna be bad too ..., Hansinguaq Bjerresvontsgaardsen (I'm just gonna call him Hans from now on because uh yeah, no), collects all the things not fit for display in his personal transport ship. He's essentially converted it into his private mobile museum.
Not long after we established diplomatic channels and preliminary trade routes, Hans eagerly went off on his own to visit Alien equivalents to museums and such. Spent a solid three weeks traveling, sight-seeing, and adding things to his collection.
During a stop on the outer reaches of Coalition space his computer blue screened and forcibly shut down the reactor and pretty much wiped his communication array address book among other less relevant components. And no, I have no clue why he went so far out. He's 46, midlife crisis is my guess, telling him to go out on daring adventures or whatever. Anyway, he couldn't restart the fusion reactor while the inhibitor rod chambers were open, they open and shoot out the star canceler in an emergency shutdown, but one was stuck with the rod half-way in, so Hans had to manually open the reactor and fix it by hand.
Problem is, his transport ship, the Veritable Greenhorn, is fairly big, and the reactor's outer diameter was about 37 meters. Even in zero-g that's a lot of mass for one person to move, not to mention how much force you'd need to pry out a hyper dense metal alloy rod from a gate meant to withstand the pressure of a star right next to it. But he did have a lot mechanical power at his disposal, it just needed to be... rearranged.
Now, he did have backup generators that quietly hum in the background like on every Human vessel, but these are passive and nowhere near enough to charge the hyperdrive even if he could tell it where to go, let alone power machinery to counter a thousand ton jammed deadbolt. He needed something that had a kick to it, something you could really rev beyond its limits just long enough. He needed his V6s and V8s.
After almost two days of DIY engineering details I won't bore you with because I fell asleep when he explained them himself, Hans fired up the engines. It was a very tedious five hours of the engines rythmically tugging the deadbolt a tenth of a milimeter open and what is basically a massive jackhammer pummeling the rod back in. At one point he ran out of gas and was forced to sacrifice his alcohol collection.
Suffice to say it barely worked, all of the machinery he cobbled together became practically unusable, but it worked and he was able to restart the fusion reactor.
Oh, he didn't come home or anything by the way. Like I guess, midlife crisis. If anything, success has made him think nothing can get in the way of his Galactic exploration quest.
So that's the story. No, he didn't use combustion engines to start the reactor or anything, but lacking any other means to fix a problem I honestly didn't know could happen, the petrol guzzlers gave him the right kind of horsepower.
By the way, if you get a chance to tour the Veritable Greenhorn, I'd recommend it. I can't even begin to describe how that contraption looks, it's one of the main displays. I guarantee it's the most specific purpose built and rough pieces of Human engineering you will ever see.

Et ils me surprennent!
Mon fils! Bravo!

I’d been looking far too long for a car. Between checking Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for “the perfect option”, and counting the cash in my coffers, I spent far too much time obsessing over the situation. I needed resolution—between the choice overload and my analysis paralysis, I would never decide on an option, but I desperately needed a car.
Then, out of nowhere, the answer came. Okay, it wasn’t out of “nowhere”. I had been talking with my boss for a little while, trying to ask his advice on which car to buy, and talking about dream cars far beyond my feeble means, and otherwise spinning castles from cloudstuffs. He’d told me he’d “keep his eyes open for me” and it was those open eyes that spotted the prize. I say “prize” because it was a result, not because it was a glorious car. His son’s mother-in-law bought a brand-spankin’-new Jeep Grand Cherokee, and her old Kia Sportage was for sale.
I was disappointed when he told me about it. Here I was, asking for an Answer to my problem, and I didn’t like this answer. This car wasn’t “fun”. The only merits this Kia had were low mileage and regular, reliable upkeep. It was a bland, brown compact 4x4 SUV, not known to be particularly reliable. No spirit, no character, no hidden secrets. Nothing but a small engine on a set of wheels with enough space to carry four passengers and their luggage comfortably. My hot, red, young blood revolted. How could I choose this car? Where were the dreams now? What about my castles?
However, I wanted to be mature. I needed a car, and I needed one now. I needed to buy something that would run for me, day in and day out, and not require a millionaire’s funds to keep it that way. Therefore, I needed a car from someone trustworthy, who wouldn’t hide problems from me, and I needed a price I could afford. The sensible parts of me started to see the Very Good Deals in this unromantic, uninteresting, unsurprising Kia.
I hated it. I hated that I had to be “responsible” and “make a good decision”. I hated that I was beginning to see the world through this practical lens. After all, I was a kid! I should be having fun right? I shouldn’t have to make a “mature choice”, I should be allowed to have what I wanted without consequences! I didn’t want to be boring!
The more I thought it over, the more I saw that my excuses were little more than whining attempts to get My Way for the sake of it being My Way. I mustered what rational thought I could and left my doubts behind. Relying on my better judgment, I bought the car.
I did try to put a good face on it. I was willing to try and see it for better than a junky pile of bolts. I was gracious to the woman who was selling it to me, and, since I brought my mother and older sister along to help me drive, I smiled and made the best of the car, no matter what I thought about it on the inside. I handed over my wad of cash with every regret possible to a boy. I doubted my decision, I doubted my life choices up to that point—I even doubted Romance itself. Nevertheless, I did buy the car. It was a car, and it was mine. The thought of ownership comforted me.
At first, the car was everything it had promised: basic, bland, and a little boring. However, I began to discover little details that made up for that. First, I had a lot of cargo room. Quite a bit more when I folded down the seats. Secondly, the car, if it was a bit bland, had some “get up and go” to it. It had a V6 engine and a Sport Mode that allowed for some sort of manual shifting. I came to appreciate the preppy little growl of the engine when I stepped on the throttle. The 4-wheel drive was handy on the ice and snow of the Northern Midwest winters, and the light interior didn’t heat up as much in the summer. Finally, I started to appreciate owning my own car. It was a degree of freedom that I hadn’t experienced before. I now had constant transportation to wherever I wanted to go—within reason. Of course, this got me into trouble with my parents quite a few times. I did break curfew, I was bad at communicating, and I did let the freedom go to my head quite a few times.
After a while, I thought about upgrading my car situation. When the pocketbook again revolted, I considered the merits of car mods and the relative benefits therein. I wasn’t exactly a full-fledged “car guy”, but I knew my way around an engine bay, and I did small maintenance jobs for all of our equipment. Eventually, I decided against it. I decided to look for high-octane excitement elsewhere and leave my Kia as it was.
I hadn’t dreamed of owning a Kia. I suppose few people do. I had my own ideas of what I had wanted, and what it may take me to get that. Nevertheless, I found myself satisfied with my car, even if I had shattered another rose-colored notion of a romance with my first ride. It was merely another part of the maturing process and another internal battle to win. My “choice” was merely cooperation with the opportunity as it arose, and there was freedom in that. My dreams would have to wait quite a while longer.

NBC will leverage NDI, HDR, ST 2110 and REMI workflows for 2024 Olympi - Videoguys
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/nbc-will-leverage-ndi-hdr-st-2110-and-remi-workflows-for-2024-olympi-videoguys/
NBC will leverage NDI, HDR, ST 2110 and REMI workflows for 2024 Olympi - Videoguys
Bob Kovacs, former Technology Editor for TV Tech recently wrote an article for TV Technology “NBC Rises to the Tech Challenges of the 2024 Olympics.” Kovacs highlights how NBC will leverage NDI, HDR, ST 2110 and REMI workflows to broadcast the 2024 Olympics.
According to Darryl Jefferson, senior vice president of engineering and technology for NBC Olympics and Sports, NBC, the official U.S. broadcaster for the Olympic games has been working for almost two years in both Paris & the NBC Sports Hub in Stamford, Connecticut to ensure a broadcast that is swifter, higher and stronger.
This will be Jefferson’s first games as head of NBC Olympics’ tech operations. Jefferson has been with NBC Olympics since 2008 in Post Production and Asset Management teams.
“We started design and peer review about 20 months ago, with build, configure and test in our integration facility. We tested video paths, workflows, delivery mechanisms and failure modes all before items shipped out. We ship gear mostly pre-configured, pre-installed, and pre-tested, for both speed of deployment and for peace of mind.” Darryl Jefferson
The Broadcast is going to be complex, with numerous venues and the the need to integrate feeds from the primary Olympics video system. There are a lot of moving parts. Their goal is for viewers to experience a seamless broadcast. So seamless viewers won’t notice that many of the on-air talent is in Stamford, while the bustle is happening in Paris.
“The biggest leap is splitting large parts of our team between Paris and Stamford. Transporting large quantities of cameras, effects gear and studios full of equipment all the way home has historically not been financially viable. In some cases, the latency was unacceptable. That split approach allows us to cover more sports with fewer total people traveling than just a few Games ago.” Darryl Jefferson

NBC Is prepared to give the viewers a seamless broadcast with the revolution in connectivity and capability.
“With new tools, robust networks, capacity with cloud infrastructure, and the ability to approach signal transport differently, there exists a whole host of new options today” Darryl Jefferson
The Oylmpics will be broadcasted in 4K/HDR and 5.1.4 immersive audio. Jefferson says “It may be a tie between getting HDR support everywhere we may need it, and the large cut over to support IP in many places. Although we’ve had important experience with both, there exist so many devices, solutions, vendors and third parties that do not support wide color gamut today, or equipment through which color information doesn’t survive.”
One of NBC’s most basic decisions assembling a system of this size is where to use the SMPTE ST 2110 IP video standard and where to use the older SMPTE SDI standard. “We have a healthy mixture of both, but are about 60% ST 2110 handoff, venue and core orchestration,” Jefferson said. “In some cases, we support both formats within a Tech Center, or gateway translation to convert one to the other. Fortunately, we have spent the last few Games [since Tokyo] making the transition over time, and certainly learning all the lessons.”
In addition to SDI and ST 2110, NBC is also using some NDI. “We are using NDI in some areas, specifically NDI v6, with support of HDR and enhanced audio,” Jefferson said.
“We have a whole trove of new technology, some of which is well behind the camera [ST 2110 and Dante, HDR and ATMOS everywhere], new encoding mezzanine formats, and also a good deal of enhancements to bring viewers further behind the scenes. Backstage cameras, audio from coaches, cameras in the stands with families, even biometrics on family and coaches. The goal of all this technology is to bring more elements of storytelling around each athlete’s journey.” Darryl Jefferson

Discovering the Ultimate Family Minivan: The Kia Carnival
When it comes to family transportation, the term "minivan" often conjures images of practicality over style, and function over form. Enter the Kia Carnival—a game-changer that redefines the minivan category with its blend of elegance, versatility, and cutting-edge technology. The Carnival isn't just a vehicle; it's a statement on wheels. Let's dive into what makes the Kia Carnival the ultimate choice for families on the move.
Aesthetic Appeal
One of the first things you'll notice about the Kia Carnival is its striking design. Gone are the boxy, uninspired shapes that traditionally define minivans. The Carnival boasts a sleek, SUV-like silhouette, a bold front grille, and sophisticated LED headlamps that give it a dynamic and modern look. It's a minivan that commands attention, turning heads whether you're on the school run or a weekend getaway.
Spacious Interior
Step inside the Kia Carnival, and you'll find a cavernous interior that comfortably accommodates up to eight passengers. The emphasis on space is evident, with three rows of seating designed to ensure everyone has ample room to relax. The second row features VIP Lounge Seating with available leg rests and adjustable headrests, providing a first-class experience for passengers. Even the third row, often a cramped afterthought in many vehicles, offers plenty of legroom and comfort.
Versatile Seating Configurations
The Kia Carnival's interior isn't just spacious; it's incredibly versatile. The second-row seats can slide, fold, or be completely removed, allowing for multiple configurations based on your needs. Whether you're transporting a soccer team, moving furniture, or embarking on a family road trip, the Carnival adapts effortlessly. The third-row seats also fold flat into the floor, creating a vast cargo area for all your gear.
Cutting-Edge Technology
The Kia Carnival is equipped with an array of advanced technologies designed to enhance the driving experience and keep everyone entertained. The centerpiece is the impressive 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which offers seamless integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There's also a rear-seat entertainment system with dual 10.1-inch displays, perfect for keeping kids entertained on long journeys.
The Carnival doesn't skimp on safety features either. It includes Kia’s Drive Wise suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), such as forward collision-avoidance assist, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, lane-keeping assist, and smart cruise control with stop and go. These technologies work together to ensure a safer and more confident driving experience.
Powerful Performance
Under the hood, the Kia Carnival is powered by a robust 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 290 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. This engine provides plenty of power for highway merging, overtaking, and carrying a full load of passengers and cargo. The 8-speed automatic transmission ensures smooth and efficient power delivery, while the refined suspension setup offers a comfortable and composed ride, even on rougher roads.
Fuel Efficiency
Despite its powerful performance, the Kia Carnival manages to maintain respectable fuel efficiency. The combination of advanced engine technologies and aerodynamic design helps it achieve competitive mileage, making it a practical choice for daily commutes and long-distance travel alike. It's a minivan that proves you don't have to sacrifice power for efficiency.
Luxurious Features
Luxury in a minivan? The Kia Carnival says yes. From premium materials to thoughtful touches, the Carnival exudes a sense of refinement. The available leather-trimmed seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel add a touch of luxury to everyday drives. Ambient lighting sets the mood, while the tri-zone automatic climate control ensures everyone stays comfortable, no matter where they're sitting.
Smart Storage Solutions
Families know that staying organized on the go can be a challenge, but the Kia Carnival rises to the occasion with smart storage solutions throughout the cabin. There are numerous cup holders, door pockets, and cubbies for stashing everything from drinks to toys to electronic devices. The center console is particularly spacious, offering enough room to store a handbag or small backpack. Additionally, the Carnival features an under-floor storage compartment at the rear, providing a hidden space for valuables or extra gear.
Connectivity and Convenience
The Kia Carnival is packed with features designed to keep you connected and make life easier. Wireless charging pads eliminate the need for cables, while multiple USB ports ensure that everyone's devices stay powered up. The Carnival also offers a hands-free power tailgate, which makes loading and unloading a breeze, especially when your hands are full.
One standout feature is the available Passenger View and Passenger Talk systems. Passenger View uses a camera to provide a live feed of the rear seats on the infotainment screen, so you can keep an eye on the kids without turning around. Passenger Talk amplifies the driver's voice through the rear speakers, making it easier to communicate with passengers in the back—ideal for giving directions or calming restless children.
Kia’s Reliability and Warranty
Kia has built a reputation for producing reliable vehicles, and the Carnival is no exception. It comes with an industry-leading 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, providing peace of mind for years to come. This commitment to quality and durability ensures that the Carnival is not just a smart purchase, but a long-term investment in your family's mobility.
Conclusion
The Kia Carnival isn't just a minivan; it's a revolution in family transportation. With its stunning design, spacious and versatile interior, cutting-edge technology, and powerful performance, the Carnival sets a new standard in the segment. It combines the practicality that families need with the style and features they want, proving that a minivan can be both functional and fashionable.
Whether you're chauffeuring kids to activities, embarking on a road trip, or simply navigating the daily grind, the Kia Carnival is designed to make every journey enjoyable and hassle-free. It's a vehicle that adapts to your lifestyle, providing the space, comfort, and technology to meet all your needs.
In a world where family vehicles are often seen as mere tools, the Kia Carnival stands out as a testament to what a minivan can be. It's not just about getting from point A to point B; it's about doing so with style, comfort, and confidence. The Kia Carnival is here to elevate your driving experience and redefine what you can expect from a family vehicle. Welcome to the future of family transportation. Welcome to the Kia Carnival.

The Easy Rider, Father, General Secretary
The first personal car was presented to Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev in 1955 by the First Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Nikita Khrushchev. Brezhnev was then put in charge of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, for whose virgin lands Nikita Sergeevich had big plans. And, as an advance, a green/white, two-door Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe Hardtop was brought from Austria to the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the KazSSR.
In 1966, the USSR entered into a contract with the Italian company FIAT for the construction of a Soviet auto giant in Tolyatti. Perhaps in gratitude for this, the Italian communists, led by FIAT President Gianni Agnelli, in 1968 presented the leader of the USSR with a new sports Maserati Quattroporte. Four-door sedan with a V8 engine producing 290 hp. With nimaginable speed of 230 km/h. According to the latest information, this car has found refuge in Estonia, although there are rumors that Margaret Thatcher herself bought it.
Another car gift in the same year was made to Leonid Ilyich by the main capitalist friend of the USSR, American billionaire Armand Hammer. He presented the General Secretary of the CPSU with the keys to a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow.
In the spring of 1969, Leonid Ilyich added three luxury cars to his garage. The first two are a gold sedan with a black vinyl top 1969 Opel Diplomat V8 (5.4 L Endenor V8 engine, 230 hp)
and a black 1969 Chrysler Newport Custom sedan (7.2 L V8 engine, 370 hp).
Their fate is unknown.
But the fate of the third car, an executive sedan, Mercedes 280 SL W108 1967 (6-cylinder engine 2.8 liters, 140 hp, 5-speed manual transmission) cherry color, is well known. The car, like many of Brezhnev’s cars, was based in Miskhor.
Brezhnev’s personal bodyguard, Major General Vladimir Medvedev, said that the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously agreed on the need for a car gift with the authorities of the country where Brezhnev's visit was being prepared.
In 1971, French President Georges Pompidou gave Brezhnev a Citroen SM sports coupe. The car had a Maserati V6 fuel-injected engine (188 hp), which allowed it to reach 225 km/h.
After taking a ride in the gift, Brezhnev issued a verdict: “The Citroen is a bit cramped, and the vaunted Italian engine is painfully noisy.” A translator of Georgian origin (standing bent fourth from the right, face blured) for de Gaulle, Pompidou, Giscard d'Estaing, and Mitterrand spoke about it. In October 1983, the car was transferred to the Moscow Automobile and Road Institute. Based in the Netherlands since 1998.
The next “auto-fit” was made by US President Richard Nixon. As a “gesture of goodwill,” he sent a black Cadillac Fleetwood to the USSR as a gift.
In May 1972, on the eve of Nixon’s visit to Moscow, Soviet Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Dobrynin privately told him: “Leonid Ilyich would really like to receive a Cadillac Eldorado car as a gift.” The car was made to special order in three days. On the fourth day, the Special Cadillac was delivered to Moscow by an American Air Force transport plane.
During Nixon's visit to Moscow in May 1972, the Secretary General was simply fascinated by the US President's armored Lincoln Continental. Unable to bear it, he turned to Nixon with a request: “Can I have the same one?” And, after a pause, he modestly added: “Only the ordinary one, of course.” They agreed that the wish would be fulfilled when Brezhnev comes to the USA for a return visit.
Leonid Ilyich arrived in Washington on June 18, 1973. In the US capital, the same “ordinary” Lincoln Continental was waiting for him.
Richard Nixon presents Leonid Brezhnev with the keys to a Lincoln Continental
Nixon recalled:
“I gave him an official gift to commemorate his visit to America - a dark blue custom-built Lincoln Continental. The inscription was engraved on the dashboard: “For good memory. Best wishes".
Brezhnev collected luxury cars and therefore did not try to hide his admiration. He insisted on trying out the gift immediately. He got behind the wheel and enthusiastically pushed me into the passenger seat. The head of my personal security turned pale when he saw me sit down inside.
We raced down one of the narrow roads that circled the perimeter of Camp David. Brezhnev was used to moving unhindered through the central streets of Moscow, and I could only imagine what would happen if a Secret Service or Marine jeep suddenly appeared around the corner on this one-way road.
In one place there was a very steep descent with a bright sign and the inscription: “Slow, dangerous turn.” Even when I drove a sports car here, I pressed the brakes to move down the road. Brezhnev was traveling at more than 50 miles (80 km) per hour as we approached the descent. I leaned forward and said, “Slow descent, slow descent,” but he didn’t pay attention. We reached the end of the descent and the tires squealed as he slammed on the brakes and turned.
After our trip, Brezhnev told me: “This is a very good car. He goes down the road very well." “You are a great driver,” I replied. “I could never turn here at the speed you were driving.” Diplomacy is not always an easy art."
Now this Lincoln Continental is on display at the Riga Motor Museum.
In 1973, the Japanese began producing a new model, the H250, of the Nissan President executive limousine. The first car produced became the official car of the Prime Minister of the Land of the Rising Sun. And the second one, with chassis number 000002 and left-hand drive, was sent to the Soviet leader as a gift.
In June 1974, when US President Richard Nixon and his wife and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger arrived in the USSR on an official visit, Leonid Ilyich took them around Moscow on it.
After Brezhnev’s death, his daughter Galina sold the “Japanese” to the rector of the Pochaev Lavra, from whom he passed to Patriarch Pimen. In 1992, the car was purchased by a private collector.
The last time it “surfaced” was in 2004 at the 3rd All-Russian Salon of Rare and Exotic Cars, where it was put up for $160,000
