These two are literally soulmates, they balance each other out and are their best selves with each other

I like to think his love language is words of affirmation and physical touch

He always texts Knox things like “I love you, idiot<3” or “I miss you” everytime they’re not together

If there’s an email Charlie needs to send but hasn’t gotten around to? Knox does it for him. An assignment Charlie struggling with? Knox will finish it for him and always gets him a good grade

Charlie is a crow, straight up

If he sees something shiny he brings it to Knox, if he sees a cool looking rock he brings it to Knox, literally any small cool thing he finds while he’s outside gets brought to Knox

But it isn’t one sided, Charlie surprisingly loves Valentine’s Day too

He wasn’t always fond of it, but once he and Knox got together and he saw how much it meant to Knox he developed a love for the holiday

He usually gets Knox new sweaters/hoodies, flowers, candy, and lots of affection (and a little extra in the bedroom if you know what I mean ;D)

Charlie has 100% punched someone in the face for calling Knox a slur and would definitely do it again

Knox would never hurt a fly, he hates fights, but when they were walking down the street holding hands some bigot called Charlie a piece of shit f**got and Knox basically tackled the dude and beat the shit out of him

Top 12 Personal Favorite Hit Songs from 2014

The “least good” of the three best years of the 2010s. This is still a top 12. Because I can, and I will.

I know. People also call it a bad year. And I think they’re wrong.

Disclaimers:

Keep in mind I’m using both the year-end top 100 lists from the US and from France while making these top 10 things. There’s songs in English that charted in my country way higher than they did in their home countries, or even earlier or later, so that might get surprising at times.

Of course there will be stuff in French. We suck. I know. It’s my list. Deal with it.

My musical tastes have always been terrible and I’m not a critic, just a listener and an idiot.

I have sound to color synesthesia which justifies nothing but might explain why I have trouble describing some songs in other terms than visual ones.

New job, which is the one I still have currently. Also, I discovered Doctor Who in December 2013 and you know exactly what happened in 2014 because I dived head first into the extended universe as soon as I finished New Who and I’ve never really recovered since then. The end of the year was highly stressful, with my cat being sick, my father needing a very dangerous surgical intervention, and me being so stressed out I was basically unable to sleep for days. Might explain why there’s a lot of cute songs on this list, I needed cute stuff.

That year wasn’t very generous in good albums from bands I liked. Epica released The Quantum Enigma, and it was okay, Within Temptation had Hydra, and it was also okay, and Coldplay had the very underrated (in my opinion at least) Ghost Stories, a mostly melancholic album full of bittersweet post-breakup songs. So I’m left with no choice but to declare The Birthday Massacre’s album Superstition my album of the year for 2014. They had stayed at a consistent level since Pins And Needles so I wasn’t expecting anything better from them, but boy do they delivered. Here is Divide, it’s about a subterranean world and it might be a metaphor but as you know I’m very literal-minded! Here’s Beyond, about a lady falling in love with a strange woman who might be some sort of fae or supernatural entity!! I love most of the album and there’s only one subpar song on it. I know they’ll never get a crossover hit but they’d deserve it so much. Look at the state of the world. We’re so ready for a new mainstream wave of energetic, angsty, weird music. Just bring it on.

There’s only one non-elligible song that truely pisses me off this time, and it’s Traffic Girl by Indochine, another single from their Black City Parade album. It’s about a policewoman in North Korea who has to wave and smile at non existant traffic all day long and the song presents her as a modern hero. It’s one of my favorite songs on the album and I’m so mad it didn’t make the French year-end list.

Here’s a list of honorable menti-holy shit why is this list so long

Albatraoz (AronChupa) - Riiiiiight at the limit between catchy and annoying. But it’s blissfully short.

Chandelier (Sia) - I would like this more if it wasn’t that painful to listen to, I swear.

Magic in the Air (Magic System) - Insert my usual comment about these guys and their fun & happy songs.

Un Jour Au Mauvais Endroit (Calogero) - Great music, good lyrics. It’s still Calogero and I tend to dislike how overdramatic he usually is. Not enough to ruin that one song for me though.

Je Garde le Sourire (Black M) - This isn’t the last time he’s gonna appear in this post.

Prayer In C (Lilly Wood & The Prick) - A bit repetitive but in a good way.

Budapest (Georges Ezra) - A bit repetitive but in a good way 2, the return but in a completely different genre.

The Monster (Eminem & Rihanna) - We’ve now entered the songs which I considered putting on the list, and yeah, there’s a lot of them even if this is a top 12. “Bad year for pop music”. Yeah. Right.

Addicted To You (Avicii) - This is good, and the music video is great, and I want to stop feeling emotional about Avicii. Please.

Don’t Tell Em (Jeremih) - I. Uh. What the f█ck. Okay. There’s no way I can justify this. I simply adore this beat even if the lyrics are really, really bad. It’s just visually stunning and I really wish the song itself was better.

Photomaton (Jabberwocky) - I don’t think this would have charted without the success of Kavinsky the previous year. But still. Wonderful stuff. Well deserved.

Madame Pavoshko (Black M) - This was on the first version of the list but in the end I really had no room left for it. It’s a song about a guy telling his old teacher he made it in life despite the fact she labelled him a hopeless case at school. With such a premise, it could be an angry song, but no, it’s upbeat, sarcastic and fun. Wonderful stuff.

Le Graal (Kyo) - Kyo? Wait, you mean the embarrassing emo guys from my 2002 and 2003 lists? These guys?? They were back on the charts after ten years?? And suddenly everyone thought it was cool to like them again?? Including me??? Sounds fake but okay

Turn Down For What (DJ Snake) - The last cut. Stim music at its finest, sharp, aggressive and colorful. Everything I ever wanted from a hit song.

12 - Wake Me Up (Avicii)

US: #22 / FR: Not on the list

“So wake me up when it’s all over, when I’m wiser and I’m older” should make no sense. You can’t get wiser if you’re asleep. At least that’s what I would probably say if I didn’t feel this. There’s a lot of times in my life I wished I could be switched off and woken up a couple of years later and be like “hello I’m back, I feel better now, what did I miss”. I totally get it.

The only reason this song is so low on the list is the drop. I don’t like it very much. The rest is damn good.

11 - Boom Clap (Charlie XCX)

US: #34 / FR: #84

Boom! Boom! Boom! CLAP. That song got me after its first seconds. Love its atmosphere, very cotton candy-like, very fluffy, with a sharp voice. Doesn’t work well if you listen to it on a loop, though, and that’s the only negative thing I can say against it.

10 - Stay The Night (Zedd)

US: #94 / FR: Not on the list

This on the other hand works very well on repeat and that drop is golden. I’m afraid I don’t have anything very interesting to say about it. It stayed on my playlist from 2014 to summer 2019, though, so that’s an impressive feat.

9 - Rather Be (Clean Bandit)

US: #41 / FR: #18

Several critics I follow have commented this song is 1) mostly meaningless 2) too perfect to say anything about it and I agree. It’s also too perfect to be really passionate about it, unfortunately, but still, very, very good stuff.

8 - Magic (Coldplay)

US: Not on the list / FR: #66

You already know I don’t really like lowkey emotional songs and I also hate the first act of Coldplay’s career, so why on earth did I like Ghost Stories so much and why is Magic making me feel so emotional, you ask? Well it’s because the music itself isn’t bland. It’s lowkey but rich, dense and colourful, and it works much better than whatever they were doing before with their slow boring songs. Also, I really struggle with dramatic vocal performances on quiet emotional songs (which is why I tend to have issues with Adele’s voice on some of her stuff), and here the balance is just ideal. Soft colors, soft textures, soft voice, this is like a colorful plushie you’ve lost for years and just found in the attic and it brings you to tears. I adore it.

Also the part of the lyrics that goes “And if you were to ask me / After all that we've been through / Still believe in magic? / Oh yes I do”, that makes me want to hug someone and never let go.

7 - Waves (Mr Probz)

US: Not on the list / FR: #15

This is completely hypnotic. It’s perfect to drive, to walk, to draw. to sit on a bench and look at the trees. It’s just wave after wave of pastel colors with a good beat and it washes away your anxiety slowly but surely. Therapeutic and beautiful without ever feeling bland. Wonderful stuff.

6 - Uptown Funk (Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson)

US: Not on the list (#1 on the 2015 year-end list) / FR: #3

Everyone loved it and I wasn’t an exception. You all know it and I’ve got nothing new or interesting to say about it. A ton of fun. Love the lyrics.

5 - Sur Ma Route (Black M)

US: Not on the list / FR: #7

If you’re wondering what’s going on in this picture, the guy is parodying a lot of famous movies or series in the music video. It’s a simple but super energetic song about trying to trace your own road in life and all the problems you encounter and how you can’t always count on people you thought were your friends. It’s very propulsive and motivating and it’s my favorite song from that guy even though he made a lot of good songs. Just great stuff. Check it out if you’ve never heard it.

4 - Ain’t It Fun (Paramore)

US: #47 / FR: Not on the list

I miss hearing that kind of thing on the radio and yes, I’m aware that makes me sound like an old idiot. Oh how I wish this had been released in 2010 when I just started to work, that would have been perfect. I know the song is supposed to be sarcastic with the whole “ain’t it fun being on your own” angle, but yeah, when your life wasn’t great before, it’s actually liberating to “live in the real world”, even if it sucks at times, even if it’s difficult and you have responsibilities and all.

Also the music video is super cute. Love it.

3 - Pompeii (Bastille)

US: #12 / FR: Not on the list

I’m honestly surprised this is only #3 on this list considering how much I loved this one back when it came out, and don’t get me wrong, it’s still a song I love to this day, just... a bit less. Maybe it’s because of overplay? I’m not exactly sure considering #1 was also played very often and I never ever got tired of it. And it’s well written, and it’s not every day that you hear a song about two dead people talking about the wrath of the gods after their city was engulfed in ash.

So yeah. Not sure what happened there. I hope this band is eventually gonna have another hit like this one. Bastille, more of Pompeii and less of Happier, please.

2 - Dangerous (David Guetta)

US: Not on the list / FR: #8

A few months ago I heard Memories by Maroon 5 and I was instantly filled with a truely disproportionate amount of rage for such a bland pop song. See, I love it when music uses well-known classical tunes and completely changes their context and tone, but Memories doesn’t do any of that, it’s just the Pachelbel canon with some bad lyrics on top. So yeah, it’s a pet peeve.

Dangerous, on the other hand, is a song mixing a small loop of Toccata & Fugue in D minor and it basically uses it as an ominous pseudo-police siren in a song about illegally cruising a car with your possibly criminal, possibly gangster crush and not knowing if you’re scared, in love or feeling the thrill of adventure, or all of that at once. I. Love this damn song.

When the only bad thing I have to say about a song talking about driving at night way too fast is “eh this isn’t as good as Kavinsky”, you know you’ve found gold.

1 - A Sky Full of Stars (Coldplay & Avicii)

US: #51 / FR: #9

As much as I love Dangerous, there wasn’t any doubt about what would top this list. I’ve spent about ten lists explaining how my appreciation of Coldplay kept growing over time and four lists explaining how much I loved Avicii, and this song is the best of both worlds. The first time I heard it, I was driving and, no joke, I was so overwhelmed I had to park my car to properly concentrate on the song.

One day I will have to paint this song to explain how fantastic it looks and I’d have to use purple, china blue and pink watercolor inks and basically paint a psychedelic night sky full of little lights and yeah, this is basically another of these songs that are deeply satisfying on a synesthetic level, and it joins this very select club with the blue song called “Blue”, the song full of bright flashes called “Lights” and the song that looks like gentle pulsing lights called “Fireflies”. I’m trying (and failing) to learn how to play it on the piano. I know the chords, and I suck, but I’m very determined.

On top of that deeply satisfying visual, there’s the soft vocals so specific of the Ghost Stories album, and the very simple, very cute lyrics, and I simply hear “'Cause you're a sky, 'cause you're a sky full of stars, I'm gonna give you my heart” and I die instantly. This is high quality musical fluff. Come to think of it, this list is full of it, and this is the Ultimate Fluffy Song. One fluff to rule them all.

Sidenote, considering I fell into the DW audios right when this song came out, that’s one of my theme songs for Eight and Charley. Because of course it is.

Next up: The beginning of a progressive drop in quality but you wouldn’t be able to tell considering how long this list of honorable mentions is

Imagine This: Edward x Bella Fluff

Happy Valentine’s Day!! Everybody go thank @emmettmccartycullen for this! Okay so when asked to do a fluffy Edwards Bella, I immediately couldn’t stop thinking about that summer between Twilight and New Moon we never got to see

Like just imagine it

“We never did go to Seattle.” Edward mentions as Bella finishes putting her clothes away.

“What?” She’s confused, moments ago they’d been in comfortable silence and the sudden question makes her feel off

“Seattle, love, we never did go,” Edward says softly she turns to find him lying on her bed, one arm extended - waiting for her to sit next to him and so she does

She lies facing him and sighs, “Why are you mentioning it now?” Because let’s face it Bella hates surprises and super hates them when they involve Edward

Edward awkwardly shrugs as he carefully tries not to move her from where she has her head tucked on his shoulder, “A man is as good as his promise.” He looks down and smiles at her and she feels her suspicions growing like calm down Bella the poor dude is from the early 20th century he’s trying to be romantic

Her eyebrows lift up and then she narrows her eyes, “You’ve kept every promise that matters. Why the sudden interest in Seattle?”

He laughs and gently kisses the spot between her eyebrows right where they crinkle, “Alice saw that it’ll be cloudy but humid - perfect weather for us to go out, if you’d like.”

Bella blinks, “Like a date?” She suddenly can’t imagine ever really going out of the city limits of Forks with Edward - their crazy and dangerous escape from James not included. Doing something normal with your vampire boyfriend wasn’t exactly something someone ever got used to

“Yes,” he replies as he watches her hand lift to gently draw patterns on his covered stomach, “exactly.” She can’t tell but his breathing is slower and he swears his dead heart is beating because my gosh she’s willingly caressing him and oh! that’s why Carlisle and Esme do it

“But, why?”

“That is what couples do,” he rolls his eyes playfully and she can’t help but swat him lightly on his stomach. It’s strange, that she knows the smallest things about him without ever actually going on a date with him. It’s also stranger that he is asking her so suddenly, because - obviously- Edward was very much a planner.

“Yeah, sure. But why so suddenly?” She’s scared. She won’t admit it but there’s something off about her tone and when she begins to bring her lip between her teeth Edward swoops in and places his thumb to gently pry her lip free. And she can’t breathe right when he’s being so gentle. Can’t think about analyzing his request when he’s so close

“You’re wounding my ego, Bella. I try to be a spontaneous romantic and your first thought is to question my grand romantic gesture?” But his golden eyes are liquid gold and his lips ghost against hers giving her small brushes of almost kisses that have her forgetting everything except his name

“You’re not,” she has to stop to remember what she’s trying to say because he’s so talented at dazzling her it makes her brain turn to mush, “playing fair.”

He pulls away smiling, “I never do”

Just like imagine Bella and Edward walking into a bookshop in Seattle and her making a beeline for the classics and laughing when she spots Dracula

“I’m so buying this,” she laughs but she’s serious and Edward can’t help but groan when he realizes that, “aw c’mon! Not many people can say they’ve read Bram Stoker’s Dracula with THE Dracula himself.” She winks and Edward’s flustered as he tries to respond

“I’m not Dracula,” and we all know Edward is probably gearing up for a long speech about philosophy and souls and our girl Bella is so not letting him

“Of course you are! You’re handsome, far too beautiful honestly, intelligent, and mysterious,” she smiles as she gently leans up to kiss his chin, “and maybe just a little too melodramatic for your own good.”

Edward ends up buying the Anne of Green Gables series (figured it could be why Bella kept having Anne flashbacks later on in Eclipse) for her instead and they walk around hand in hand through the streets of Seattle.

Bella can’t help but skip carefully around because holding Edward’s hand feels better than anything ever could - and she felt herself glad the sun wasn’t shining. Forget the sun, she just needed Edward

And just imagine smaller dates? Like Edward and Bella curled on her sofa watching Anne of Green Gables. She’s practically on his lap and happily munching on some apple slices with caramel and he’s whispering Gilbert’s lines in her ear

Edward taking her to the meadow on a sunny afternoon and asking her to place her head on his lap. He’s humming her lullaby as she lets the sun soak into her skin and he silently plucks a couple of white and purple flowers.

Once he has a small pile, he carefully untangles her hair and concentrates on braiding it. Bella stays silent, so at peace she drifts off.

When she wakes up she’s surprised to find that Edward’s woven the flowers into her hair and she tries to stick one into his hair only for it to immediately fall off

He can’t help but laugh at her annoyance, “Would you like me to show you something that might be a little more effective?”

“Yes please,” she’s smiling as she watches him blur around the meadow and appearing in front of her with a pile of flowers. The glittering diamonds off his skin make him even more beautiful if that were possible and she’s so dazzled she can’t help but get lost in his now soft eyes

“Here,” he extends a few long stemmed flowers to her, “I’m going to teach you how to make a daisy chain.”

But this is Bella and while she’s careful she can’t figure out how Edward’s hands are so delicate as she decapitates a flower when pulling too hard. He’s laughing as he gently tried to show her again and she won’t admit it but she might’ve sacrificed a few flowers to hear his gentle teasing again and again

Charlie tries not to laugh when Edward drops Bella off at home later on that day, sporting a daisy chain flower crown and a huge smile that makes that “makes that Edwin kid look even more whipped than usual”

BONUS IDEA because I just realized summer involves studying for next school year:

one day after a particularly hard study session (because Bella is 100% taking AP English Lit and serious about finishing homework early) Bella calls Edward over but makes him wait outside

She takes about an hour to finally come out and Edward keeps wanting to run inside to figure out what’s going on but Alice told him she’d rip his arms off if he did and why did Alice make him wear this three piece suit? And where is Bella? Why is she taking so long did she trip? Did she drown? Did she break her neck? Is she bleeding? He doesn’t smell blood but maybe -

And then she steps outside wearing this super frilly light blue long sleeved Edwardian masterpiece Alice found online and had restored, her hair is piled high on her head and she’s holding a copy of Anne in one hand and a glass of sweet tea in the other

“What-?”

“I can’t make you human again,” Bella says and she’s looking down at the floor with bright red cheeks before she looks up at him, “i can’t meet your parents or stroll with you in the Chicago of your childhood. But I can try and recreate what it might’ve been like.”

And Edward is suddenly so glad he can’t cry because if he could he’s sure Emmett would’ve never let him live this down and his mouth is wide open and his eyes are blinking back the feeling of unshed tears and she smiles

“Hello I’m Isabella Swan,” and he’s about to ask why she’s introducing herself when he already knows her - knows how her neck gets blotchy when she’s overheated, knows she can’t stand getting hiccups, knows she can list all the constellations in the sky but can’t remember what the look like - when she laughs, “and for today you’re Edward Masen.”

For the next few hours they sit next to each other on the front steps of the porch, taking turns reading to each other. Edward can’t help but feel his heart swell every time she stops reading to glance at him. He plays with her fingers and if this is as close to knowing her in 1918 that he can get then he’ll take it.

As the sun sets Edward can’t help but smile, “if I may,” he looks down at his feet and my god they’ve kissed before but suddenly he feels more human than he should and he can feel his veins stirring and trying to push blood into his cheeks, “may I - that is can’t I,” he clears his throat, “May I request a kiss, Isabella?”

“You may.”

Just ahh imagine Bella unable to sleep so Edward sings to her the whole night while playing with her hair. When she does eventually fall asleep her lips are pressed against his neck and she keeps whispering, “I love you,” and “Edward,” in her sleep.

He can’t sleep - he doesn’t even remember how to - but he closes his eyes and lets himself relax into her touch. He can’t help but think this is the closest to heaven he’ll ever feel.

Chief of Elfish Resources Nozomi Tojo stepped through the door and saw three papers scattered across the pristine white surface of Eli’s desk, she knew some disaster had occurred. Eli was sitting behind the desk, hands wide for balance, blue eyes with a dizzy look at the back of them, like someone had slipped and caused her to fall into a wall.

“How could she?” Eli asked, anger starting to clarify in her voice, “How could she?”

Nozomi was one fact away from knowing how to reply, although she had a guess as to the party involved.

“How could…” Nozomi stepped into the room, her question leaving a blank for Eli to fill.

“Maki.” Eli shoved her chair back, standing. Another page drifted off the pile as the desk reacted to the after tremors. “Maki. Doesn’t she realize…”

Eli turned away, overwhelmed by too many emotions. Nozomi scooted closer to the desk, reading upside down. Insurance information for someone named Honoka Kosaka. Accident?

“Is Maki all right? Does her father know?” Nozomi’s concern was more than professional. Everyone at North Pole Nishikino had come to love the often grumpy but always kindly sole heir to the Santa suit and sleigh.

“Maki is fine. And not taking this seriously. How do I tell her father?” Eli glanced at Nozomi.

“Do you want me to?” Nozomi sat on the corner of Eli’s desk, primly arranging the skirt of her purple dress over her knees, .

“It’s not your job.” Eli groaned. “It’s not really my job either.”

Nozomi neatened the papers, “My job is to take care of the employees. You are an employee. If it would be taking care of you, in the only way you’ll let me…”

Eli pretended to ignore what Nozomi was leaving very openly unsaid, “I’ll do it myself.” Eli’s smile barely qualified but Nozomi, as usual, took what she could get, “Thanks, Nozomi.”

Nozomi bounced up, “Just take care of yourself, Eli-chi. Medical forms cause too much paperwork.”

“Hey,” Eli sounded indignant and Nozomi was glad Eli couldn’t see the giggle she was holding back, “Last year was a fluke.”

“Just make sure you get some rest,” Nozomi twirled in the doorway, “And put up some mistletoe. I made sure it was regulation.”

Eli shook her head at the flirtatious dark haired woman and sat down, staring out the window at the sunlit afternoon, wondering what other kinds of trouble Maki was getting herself into. ANd wondering if the young heir had read the detailed email Eli had spent last week on, about polishing her ability to serve as the public face of the company.

Maki woke to her phone going off. She hated setting the alarm so on weekends she never bothered. But Rin’s chirpy text tone was enough to drag her out of a dream that involved Nico in candy cane stripes from head to toe and a Christmas tree and...Maki grabbed her phone.

R: Eli’s so MAD at you, Maki (╯=▃=)╯︵┻━┻

Groggy, Maki stared at Rin’s message. She hadn’t done anything. Surely Eli couldn’t expect a response to that ridiculously long email about public presentation and the North Pole Nishikino industrial image. Maki usually had a week before Eli started to get twitchy about that sort of thing, especially when Maki was working off site.

M: What happened?

R: Motorcycle crash? Remember? Or did you forget your helmet again?

M: It wasn’t an accident. Someone ran over my bike. I wasn’t even on it ┐(´ー｀)┌

R: Eli’s still REALLY mad. Nozomi looked worried.

M: It’ll be fine. I’ll send her an email. Papa wasn’t upset.

Maki decided it was time to take a walk.

Nico enjoyed market day, when she actually had the time to spend the morning downtown. So many people bustling happily, especially this time of year, that it was always easy to spread or catch a smile or a laugh. She was especially looking forward to stopping at her favorite bakery and seeing what treats they were making for the holidays. Take some food porn worthy pictures and she’d have a handy blog post, especially if she deconstructed the recipes and made her own versions.

Nico loved dressing for the season. Today, she had snowflake covered light blue leggings and a comfy red oversized sweater with a cartoony Christmas tree, white faux furry boots and a white puffy jacket. She’d only had a little fun with the lipstick, base red with some smudged white snowflakes. No snow yet, that’d be a story for tomorrow, according to the latest forecast, so today Nico was just going to enjoy the sun, the holiday bustle and the...Nico paused as she entered Central Market, the live music, holiday songs? Occasionally, someone would be playing the piano, but this was a much higher level of effort than Nico had ever heard her before, with the jazzy Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas songs making for an auditory treat.

Nico headed for the piano, recognizing as she got closer the red hair bouncing as Maki’s long, slender fingers danced over the keys. There was only a second pause between songs, not much of a crowd had gathered. Nico frowned, they really should be more appreciative of this caliber a performer. Maki closed her eyes and then seemed to dive into the music. Nico knew this one. And she knew how to draw a crowd.

Market day. One of the pleasanter things about Tudor for Maki was their downtown market, open 3 days a week, with farmers and small business owners focusing mostly on local foods and crafts. There was also, right in the heart of the market, a piano, surrounded by some tables. Free for anyone to use. Maki had taken to spending an hour or so every weekend making sure her fingers stayed nimble. And since Thanksgiving, she didn’t have to fight the urge to play Christmas carols anymore. People welcomed them. Today, she hadn’t gathered a crowd, everyone was hurrying from stand to stand buying presents or supplies. A few people caught her eye and smiled, one little girl had watched for almost half an hour as Maki delivered her Santa related repertoire. Now, she was playing her way through the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack, when she heard a voice break in and felt hands settle on her shoulders:

Then the pianist jerked a little as news personality Nico Yazawa whispered into her ear, beaming, “Good choice, Maki, with so many kids around. My siblings love Charlie Brown, we watch it every year.”

Today, Nico had opted once again for a seasonal theme in clothing as well as  lipstick...Maki leaned back a little, pressing briefly into her surprise accompanist, as her fingers forgot how to play anything but random notes. Turning her head, she caught Nico’s smile at point blank range and her heart jumped. Nico seemed to have scattered snowflakes over her base red lips today. How did she manage that?

Nico glanced down, “No sheet music. Nico is impressed. Do you know “Frosty the Snowman”? The crowd will love it.”

Maki gulped, nervous, as Nico held her glance, red eyes encouraging. Maki nodded and played the first few notes. Nico started to sing along and let go of Maki’s shoulders, walking up to random people and getting them to join in. Soon there was a crowd and as Nico sang the last line, applause.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you! Nico is just here to bring a little holiday cheer!” Nico curtsied and winked at Maki, whose mouth gaped open as Nico worked the crowd, yet somehow never lost eye contact with her. “What’ll we have next? Did you see Nico sing “Jingle Bells” on the noon show, yesterday, no, well it went like this.”

Nico slid into the bench, forcing Maki to move down. “Start us off, Maki.” Nico smiled “‘Jingle Bells’.” And Maki started to play.

More applause, Nico kneeling down to sign an autograph for a child, this was Maki’s chance to flee. She sprang up, ducked into the crowd and was heading for the door when she heard Nico say, “Let’s thank my accompanist, Maki Nish...hey, Maki, where you going?”

Some laughter, people must have thought it was a joke. Maki picked up her pace. She made it to the street before Nico caught up.

Nico maneuvered through people too easily, maybe her size gave her an advantage when dodging between them. “Hey, Red and Rushing…”

“It’s MAKI.” Maki whirled at Nico’s touch, “And I didn’t ask you to sing.”

Nico brushed off the correction, digging white gloves out of her parka, “But Nico thought you should have more of an audience. Sing alongs always make people smile. And we looked cute together.”

Nico looked cute. Maki was wearing her bomber, a t-shirt, grey sweats and steel toed work boots. Maki looked like laundry day. She shook her head, shoved her hands in her pockets, “Look, you’re a performer, I get that...”

“Nico is a journalist. So you don’t.” Nico corrected, confused, once again at Maki’s attitude. She’s been playing a piano beautifully in a public location and Nico had gotten people to notice.

Maki knew breaking off to head back to the Yorktowne would seem rude, but standing here on a street corner with those red eyes watching her and trying to figure out where the glitch was was not something Maki could tolerate for much longer.

“Fine. Sorry. You like having an audience,” Nico nodded, as if Maki had finally gotten something right, “But I don’t.”

Nico blinked, “You were playing a piano in public.”

Maki kicked the heel on one boot against the other’s instep, reluctantly admitting the problem. “It’s the only piano I could find.”

Nico looked sad for a flash of a second, then bounced back, “You are taking Nico to lunch to explain.”

“What?” Maki was 100% sure there was only one answer allowed. And Maki hadn’t said it.

Nico cancelled Maki’s escape attempt by latching on to her arm, “Where’s your favorite weekend lunch spot? Nico is curious about what Maki does in Tudor.”

“The pizza margherita at Vincenzo’s is amazing,” Maki finally managed to offer as she continued to fight the panicked urge to pull away from Nico’s clinginess.

“Oh good, it’s right down the block.” Nico started down the street, pulling Maki along.

The waitress had recognized Maki and asked if she wanted the usual. Maki said "Yes".

Nico delayered and settled into the booth across from Maki, “There’s enough to share, right?”

Maki nodded. Guess she wouldn’t be taking home half a pizza for breakfast then. But company was good. Nico kept watching her, as if some gesture, some motion would defuzz the focus for her.

“So is where you live a lot different from here?" Nico wondered, after giving Maki too much time to start the conversation.

Maki glanced around the restaurant, inhaling the warmth and oregano and fennelly sauce smells, “There’s only one diner, plus whatever the chefs at the company cafeteria put together. But they do a pretty robust international menu. And any time you want, you can get comfort food.” Maki almost licked her lips as she remembered the Spaghetti Bolognese they’d just put in rotation as the Tuesday dish. “We grow a lot of our own herbs and vegetables. Mama decided it would be healthier and implemented it when she married Papa. ” Nico laughed. Maki’s eyes narrowed, “What?”

“That’s cozy. Comfort food plus industrial innovation as a groom gift. You sound like you enjoy variety? Do you cook?” Nico fidgeted with the wine list on the table.

“Nope.” Maki didn’t mean to state it quite so proudly.

“Planning to marry a chef?” Nico teased, entertained by the light blush on Maki’s cheeks.

“A baker, maybe…” Maki got distracted by the sight of the pizza coming their way and actually answered the question.

Nico leaned into her hands, watching Maki pay no attention to her and “just met my hot date” levels of attention to the newly arrived pizza. It was unexpected. Nico was impossible to ignore. Piano playing must burn off calories. So Nico refrained from grandstanding, enjoying the opportunity to really look at the woman across from her, an intriguing mix of girly curves and sportif style. Nico had to admit she liked the way the two styles clashed, especially with such honest eyes. Nico could read so much in them, it was refreshing in a business where most flattery was a formality. But 10 seconds of Maki swooning over choosing slices was really enough. “That one looks good; Nico will take it.”

Maki glanced up, fingers on a crust, eyes wide and Nico knew the hungry redhead had forgotten Nico was there. Flattering. Nico sighed. But then there was that shy, sweet smile Nico liked better than sweets, “I’m so sorry, Nico…” and her name sliding so melodiously out of those lips as the initial slice was apologetically handed over. Nico might have been swooning herself by now, but Maki was on a date with someone named Margherita and not Nico. Given a little warning, of course, Nico could have made Maki forget anything else but this was an information gathering interview triggered by a random encounter, not a Date™. So Nico chewed quietly and thought seriously about what question to start with.

“So do you prefer jazz?” Nico asked when Maki reached for her second slice.

Maki paused, her lavender eyes thoughtful, then she shrugged, “Classical or jazz, both are challenging to play. And listen to.”

“Hmmm…” Of course, pizza girl would skip over the part where she asked Nico questions. So Nico provided the answer, “Nico likes K and J-pop.”

Maki almost put down her pizza, not bothering to hide her distaste at the Nico’s revelation of Nico’s taste in music. “Aren’t those the silly songs where the band members wear as little clothing as possible?”

“Hey,” Nico almost flung her crust as she pointed it at Maki, “Those are very danceable, if you dance anything newer than the grandparent wallflower waltz. They make people smile, give them energy.” Nico dropped the crust and brushed crumbs off her hands, “And what’s wrong with sexy costumes, some of the groups have the best fashion insight. Nico picks up tips. Just now, menswear is hot, the latest Mamamoo video, Moonbyul rocking suits onstage, sexy, but,” Nico let herself get a little snarky as she quoted Maki, “not as ‘little clothing as possible.’ Sexy with style. Nico likes that. Nico looks good in that.” Nico refrained from saying she looks good in anything. Here was Maki and the night they’d met, Nico had been rocking ‘knocked sideways into weather’ chic.” So Maki already knew that.

Maki shook her head, continuing to chew, “You are going to take fashion tips from girls in suits...you seem too…”

Nico grabbed another piece, resisting the urge to flex her frequently worked out, can lift twice what people would expect bicep,“Nico is adaptable. I’m thinking tux for New Year’s Eve.”

“Tuxedo?” Maki tilted her head, one eye squinting, obviously trying to picture Nico in the outfit.

“Tuxedo jacket.” Nico specified, stretching her leg out, “And fishnets.” She winked when Maki’s eyes finished the tour of her leggings. Maki grunted and glanced away, fumbling to pick up her napkin. Nico was starting to have fun.

“So why play at market if you don’t want an audience?” Leave Maki with the New Year’s Eve outfit visuals to imagine and move on. Nico congratulated herself on a solid strategy.

“You can’t just pack your piano when you travel.” Maki crumpled her napkin, tossing it on her plate. “I found that one the first month, mostly people don’t notice.”

Nico tapped Maki’s hand, “Nico doesn’t believe that. These have talent. Obvious talent.”

Maki started, quickly pulling her hands all the way back to her lap, then tried to figure out how to take a sip of her slightly too distant iced tea without exposing them. Nico almost giggled as Maki decided to lean slowly toward the straw, stretching her neck out.

“This is really good pizza.” Nico smiled.

Maki glanced up from her straw maneuvering, “I’m glad you liked it.”

“Maybe next time, I’ll take you to one of my favorite lunch places.” Nico edged the iced tea closer to Maki, who latched onto the straw with her mouth, taking a long sip. Then she sat back, twisting glistening lips together as she thought for a minute, eyes brightening at her decision, “Maybe.”

Nico bounced up, “Nico will take that as a date. How much do I owe you for the pizza?”

“You’re leaving?” Maki and Nico seemed equally surprised by the redhead’s disappointment.

Nico twirled, graceful even in the small space, “Nico’s the weekend anchor. So I have a show to get ready for.”

“Oh.” The gleam in Maki’s eyes dimmed, “don’t worry about the pizza. I’ll take care of it.”

“Thanks, Maki.” Nico swept in so fast Maki couldn’t dodge and kissed her cheek, “Play the piano again for me sometime, okay?”

Maki nodded, hand ghosting over her cheek. Nico thought the pianist wasn’t even aware the gesture had happened. Nico could definitely work with this.

Maki had been shopping for snacks to restock her mini fridge, then run out of errands to run. So she’d gone to see the latest blockbuster. Boring. Neither of these activities were nearly lively enough to follow up her accidental lunch ‘date’ with Nico Yazawa, so, once again, Maki found herself back in her hotel room, sprawled out on her couch, alternating between staring at stripey walls and the not so stripey ceiling. She hadn’t posted anything on TWIG today so she took a ceiling shot with the caption “needs more cookies.”

“Talk to the cute girl.” That sounded like Rin. Maki chuckled before she heard the next part play in her head “I did it?” Was StormCookie dating someone? Or trying to? And what would that mean for...suddenly, Maki felt sick to her stomach again, cold sweat on her forehead.

StormCookie had sent another DM.

StormCookie: I have faith in you, apprentice (￣ー￣)ｂ Step away from the phone and the cute girls will flock.

And then Maki will forget to offer them slices of pizza and insult their music choices. Maki sighed, hugged her phone to her chest, reaching again for the blanket while calculating the hours she had to wait until the Channel 10 Weekend News.

1. Do you ever doubt the existence of others than you? Yeah, sometimes I have those dissociated, out of body experiences where I think maybe my entire life is a dream or maybe I’m in a coma and I imagined everyone that I know. It’s really freaky, do not recommend. 

3. The person you would never want to meet? The loud yam we just gave all the nukes to.

5. If you were a type of tree, what would you be? The only tree I’ve ever had a particular fondness for is the lemon myrtle tree, which I learned about while I was in Australia. It has this beautiful lemon scent and it’s used to make essential oils, flavoring for desserts, and its leaves can be used for tea.

7. What shirt are you wearing? This really cute blue sweater that the lovely @sakurita94 actually drew for me once for the sake of a meme.

9. Bright room or dark room? The walls in my room are bright red and a purple shade that’s this really nice, light color. As far as lighting in a room goes, usually I like it to be a bit darker.

11. Favorite age you’ve been so far? Age 19 was a great year. Being in London and having that freedom was just amazing and I was at that nice median of being an adult but not being as old as I am now needing to do everything for myself.

13. Your worst enemy? This horrible girl who used to go to my college and harassed my boyfriend in the hopes of breaking us up, regardless of how much I tried to be her friend.

The boyfriend says that male me would look like Peter Pan and in the list of actors who have played him, I think I look most like Charlie Rowe?

23. What is one unique thing you’re afraid of? It’s totally normal to be afraid of bugs, but for some reason when I tell people that I’m also afraid of butterflies, they think that I’m crazy. Those butterfly houses at zoos scare me so much! What if I step on one?? What if one lands on me????!?!

25. You just found $100! How are you going to spend it? I would probably save that $100 in my wallet to use for nice little extra things throughout my days like takeout food or a milkshake. Cause I love treating myself to small things but that adds up a lot. 

27. An angel appears out of Heaven and offers you a lifetime supply of the alcoholic beverage of your choice. “Be brand-specific” it says. Man! What are you gonna say about that? Even if you don’t drink booze there’s something you can figure out… so what’s it gonna be? Kahlua mudslide mix.

31. You can erase any horrible experience from your past. What will it be? Probably the most traumatic thing in my past would be having my front teeth knocked out, I’d love it if that had never happened.

As it turns out, Death is actually a pretty cool entity, and happens to be in a fantastic mood. Death offers to return the friend/family-member/person/etc. of your choice to the living world. Who will you bring back? Oh man, so many amazing people died in 2016 so I want to jump right on that and say Carrie Fisher or Anton Yelchin or something. But whenever I’m given this question, I always have the same answer, and that is Fred Rogers. 

35. Are you a good….[insert anything you’d like here]? Am I a good writer? Kind of, but I really hate the process.

37. Have you ever built a snowman? Yes but it was more of this morphed snow tower with a face. 

39. What type of music do you like? Oh god, almost everything. Mainly showtunes and the emo trinity though.

43. Do you have any scars? Yes, quite a few. I have three on my left hand and wrist from when my friend’s dog bit me. One on my right chest from where I had a tumor removed. Several in various parts of my arms and legs where derma has gone crazy. 

45. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would really love to have a body that didn’t constantly feel like it was dying.

47. If you could ask your future self one question, what would it be? I would probably ask my future self what her biggest regret was in the hopes that I could avoid that. 

49. If you could breed two animals together to defy the laws of nature, what new animal would you create? The puppy manatee. A small, land dwelling manatee who sleeps at the foot of your bed and gives you kisses. 

51. Are you a good liar? I think that I am, but I’m not really sure.

53. What has been you worst haircut/style? When I was in kindergarten, I had a crush on a boy who had a bowl cut and for some reason I expressed my five year old feelings by getting the exact same haircut as him? It was super weird and not cute even slightly.

55. Can you do any accents other than your own? I’m not great at accents as much as I am at voices. If I have someone specific to imitate, then I do a pretty good job. Without a voice reference, my southern belle is pretty passable. 

57. What is the last thing you drew a picture of? Oh god, I don’t draw much. I think my last doodle of a face was of Adam Driver? 

59. Do you sing in the shower? Or do anything unusual in the shower? Explain. If I’m playing music, I sing along usually. My unusual thing in the shower is probably just sitting down. Standing in the shower has always been less comfortable for me so this is something I’ve done ever since I was a kid. I don’t always do it, but it’s nice to just fold your knees up to your chest and get warm under the water. 

61. Do you often read your horoscope? Whenever I seen horoscope posts on tumblr, I read mine. I don’t tend to seek them out though.
