Thinking about Carpe Diem and the cinematography of falling leaves to falling snow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seasons as cyclical as generations. It's tapestries and banners. It’s photographs on the wall. A structure, a system; tradition in the bones of buildings and boys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a choice to be made - Nolan's hollow, ceremonial Light of Knowledge, or Neil's scavenged, man-made God of the Cave?
Tumblr media
They’re children living for the future through a lens of past. Fireside stories embraced by woodland caves. They chant, dance, and recite from a sacred book - the heirloom they claim from a father they chose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The window is finally open, but time froze at Welton lake. Forever winter. Forever youth. A moment in time, a feeling, a community turned to dust.
Tumblr media
It's all so fleeting. Carpe Diem. Teenage years, childhood, a lifetime in three months. It’s a tragedy of classical epics.
The tale is old, but this wound is fresh. Falling to your knees. Shouting at the sky, praying and wailing, and clutching at the earth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the snow never stops.
Spring is up to us.

Keating:- for the last part of your driving test you see an old man and a kid what you'd do.
Neil:- umm...the old man? Well i mean...the kid has his whole life ahead of him. So...I would hit the old man right??
Keating:- The brakes Neil... you hit the brakes.

I noticed something in dps
in film class last year they taught us that when shooting dialogue you show connections by putting the back of someone in the shot or smth i don’t really remember BUT
in the “I’m trapped” scene when Neil is telling Mr Keating about how his dad won’t let him act it shows Mr K, therefore showing that Neil feels like Mr Keating really understands
Tumblr media
but right after Me Keating says that Neil should tell his father it no longer shows them together in the shot because Neil feels alone again, because he realizes that Mr K doesn’t fully understand his plight
Tumblr media
so now I’m crying
thank you for coming to my Ted talk

i love and hate that mr mcallister was mr keating's only cheerleader. bonding over poetry, comforting him after one of his students dies instead of blaming him and turning the other cheek, and even adopting his teaching methods, he supported that man from day one and i love him for it

Why is the reddit side of every fandom I am into is a cesspool of asnine takes. A quick search on Dead Poets Society and I get bombarded with a very forced hateful rhetoric towards Keating especially blaming him for Neil's death. Not to mention they are no less awful towards Neil himself??? Calling him an idiot for taking his own life. And while I do not endorse suicide, his pain is very real and very valid, he was TRAPPED, he was scared and his perception was warped because of the devastating decision his tyrant father made for him, not only forbidding him from pursuing his dreams but also cutting him off from the community he loved cherished and felt accepted in. Also people seem to forget that not only he would lose ten years of his life in med school but also, the movie was set in the time when the Vietnam War was going on. He would have likely gotten conscripted, and after that?? He would have either died like Meeks or spend the rest of his life battling bigger demons?? Sure Neil should not have killed himself and should have been more rational but its not easy to be a rational person, very especially when you grow up in an unsafe environment like him, where your parents themselves are far from rational beings and havent got over their own demons, he is just a human being, a child who just got snatched away from his support system and has no one to turn to for solace anymore. I wish people had a bit of empathy towards him.
On another note, Neil always wanted to act even before Keating came into the scene. If anyone remembers the scene where he yells Carpe Diem after announcing that he is going to act- he clearly mentions that he had auditioned for a play back in summer but could not participate because of his father. All Keating did was give Neil more courage to pursue his aspirations and even then Keating did caution him to inform his father about his final decision (something Neil reasonably didnt because he was determined). Keating by far has been the only notable adult figure in his life who has shown him gentleness, who has made him feel truly at home, who has given him the space to express himself. But of course blame him instead of his abusive father who treated him as a personal belonging for his entire life and never saw him as a human being
