Uhhhh.... Dead Poets Society after the film HC's anyone?

TW: MENTIONS OF SU*CIDE!!! Mentions of mental illness/depression/anxiety, ANGSTY AS HELL. THIS IS GONNA BE SAD.

Headcanons of the Poets after Neil's death/after Welton because I like to make myself sick to the stomach w angst

I know we all love headcanons of a happy ending universe, but I wanna talk about what the poets did after the real end of the movie

CHARLIE:

Charlie was expelled from Welton after his outburst where he punched Cameron

It didn't help his case that when the headmaster asked him about Mister Keating, he cussed the man out for even implying that Keating had something to do with Neil offing himself.

His parents are pissed, to say the least.

His mom cries when she finds out, talking about "how could you embarrass our family like this?!"

His dad's reaction hurts him more, though

He just stands silently beside his mother, arms crossed, staring at Charlie with a look that clearly screams how disappointed and unhappy he is to have him as his son.

He doesn't leave his room until Neil's funeral, no matter how many times his parents come in to scold him and yell at him.

He stays in touch with Meeks, Todd, Knox and Pitts

He and Cameron don't talk for a few years, though.

They do, however, stand silently side by side during Neil's funeral, Todd on Charlie's other side, Meeks, Knox and Pitts beside them.

When the two do reconnect, it's years later. Charlie had just gotten a job at the same bank as his father, Cameron comes in not knowing he works there

It's awkward for a moment, then they smile at each other, and suddenly their both laughing, tears in their eyes (neither of them are sure wether they're good or bad tears.)

They agree to meet up and have coffee on their days off

The conversation is surprisingly pleasant, filled with happy memories the boys had shared between themselves and their friends in school

It ends in both of them apologizing to each other, hugging, and agreeing to try and stay in contact from then on out.

TODD

Todd doesn't talk much the next few weeks

He's silent at the table during meals, never touches his food, and doesn't meet anyone's eyes.

Each night he sits and stares at the present he bought for Neil a few days before he shot himself

He doesn't unwrap it, he doesn't return it

He just sits and stares at the dark green wrapping with the red bow tied around it

The first three nights he does this, he just stares. Silently

The fourth night he breaks down sobbing

He would fall asleep that night hugging the present in Neil's bed.

At Neil's funeral, his eyes never leave the casket

To this day he remembers the weight of it in his hand as he carried Neil to his final resting spot

He starts talking to the rest of the poets bit by bit

He's never as outgoing or as happy as he was when he was with Neil, though. That part of him is gone and buried six feet under right beside his best friend

Todd writes to Mister Keating often, the two exchange letters

Todd does keep writing.

He almost quit, but he swore he could feel Neil looking down on him, sad to see he had lost his passion when Neil lost his life

He keeps writing for Neil's sake

Everything he writes is about Neil in some way shape or form, even if it isn't directly, even if he doesn't notice it

Wether it be him giving the main character of his story brown hair, or brown eyes that look straight into your soul, or a smile that lights up the room, or a love for acting- there is always a hint of Neil in everything he writes.

He would eventually go on to become a published poet and author, even though he had to cut ties with his family in the process

He still talks to the poets now and then. Keating the most of all

Everytime he publishes a book or a poem, all the poets and Keating get a copy sent to them with a hand-written note written on the blank first page, dedicated to each of them individually

And in the back of every book or at the end of every poem, he makes sure to write "in loving memory of Neil Perry." No matter what.

The Christmas gift he bought for Neil stays in the top of Todd's closet, never opened.

He still holds it from time to time. Looks at it everyday when he's getting his clothes for the day and tells Neil how much he misses him

Todd loves Neil until the day Todd meets him again

Todd will never know this, but his mom has everything he's written on her shelf at home.

CAMERON

None of the poets talk to him for a while after he turns them in and blames Keating for Neil's death.

Cameron holds onto a little guilt over what he told the headmaster regarding Keating and Neil

He knows deep down that it wasn't Keatings fault, but it's easier for him to grasp that than the truth

He's not happy that Charlie was expelled. He really did want to keep all of the boys, including Charlie, in Welton. That's why he came forward about the Dead Poets Society in the first place.

Despite the ache in his face when he goes to his room for the first time after Charlie has been expelled, he can't help but feel a little uneasy and sick to his stomach at the silence that fills his room that night, which would've usually been filled by his hyper friends antics

That night is the first, and only time he allowed himself to cry over everything that happened

He even held back the tears at Neil's funeral. He didn't feel he deserved to cry, not when Charlie, Meeks, Knox, Todd, and Pitts were right next to him, still mad at him for ratting them all out and blaming Keating.

He wanted to stand with the others when Keating walked out, but he couldn't. He stared down at his desk the entire time. He couldn't face any of them.

After a LOT of time, he would end up writing a letter to Mister Keating apologizing to him for blaming him for Neil's death.

Mister Keating would never receive the letter, as by the time Cameron finally worked up the courage to send it, Keating had met his own fate. Cameron is never notified of his passing.

Cameron goes on to become an engineer, his parents are proud of him, but he will always feel a little dissatisfied with himself for reasons he can never put his finger on.

MEEKS

He tries to be there for Charlie, Todd, and Pitts as much as he can

Hides his own feelings and emotions to make sure his friends are okay

He only ever lets himself silently cry and mourn properly when Pitts and everyone else falls asleep late at night

Visits Todd's room every morning to check in on him and try to convince him to eat some breakfast

Holds Pitts when he's crying, holding back his own tears so he doesn't make his friend hurt any worse. The last thing they need is to be worried about .him.

During the funeral, he's shaking the entire time, jaw clenched so hard his teeth hurt as he tries to will himself to stop from crying

It isn't until Pitts pulls him aside and gives him a bear hug and asks him to talk to him that Meeks finally breaks down sobbing

Todd and Charlie shortly join them, wrapping their arms around each other in a group hug as they all cry over their lost friend.

He becomes an Electronics engineer after Welton and College, he loves his job and loves what he does

He works with Pitts, actually. The two of them stay as close as ever, if not closer.

He and Pitts both stay in contact with Charlie and Todd, the four of them meet up sometimes and have lunch, dinner, coffee etc, talk about life, and remember their past lives

Meeks has a framed photo of him and the Dead Poets Society (including keating) hung in his home and in his office at work.

He likes to go and see local plays when he gets the chance. It reminds him of seeing Neil on stage.

PITTS

Is the first one to be told about Neil's passing, since he just so happened to be the first one awake that morning.

He's the one who has to inform the rest of the poets before they go tell Todd.

He holds it together long enough to tell everyone, but when him and Meeks get back to their room that night, he loses it

Breaks down sobbing harder than he has ever cried in his life

Pitts was always a little socially awkward, Neil was one of the first people to not make him feel weird or annoying, one of the first people to genuinely care about and consider Pitts a friend

Neil had tried his entire life to make sure everyone felt included, that none of his friends felt alone, and it turns out Neil had needed that himself more than any of them had. That's what breaks Pitts

It breaks him that Neil was so selfless, so outwardly happy and worried about keeping everyone else happy, yet he was so sad and lost and alone in his own life, despite being surrounded by friends

He cried and cries until his eyes run dry and he can hardly make a sound anymore

He's nearly sick when he sees Neil's casket before they carry him away. He hardly holds his tears back while carrying him to the graveyard

He holds it together until he sees Todd's face, staring blankly at the casket, tears rolling down his cheeks yet no emotion on his face

Then he saw Meeks, shaking next to him, jaw clenched, eyes glassy, body tense, obviously struggling to hold it together, and for a second, Pitts is worried he might lose Meeks like he lost Neil.

That breaks him.

He pulls Meeks aside and hugs him, crying as he pleaded his friend to open up, to talk to him, say anything

Meeks cries in his arms. Soon enough Charlie and Todd are joining the hug and all four of them are crying

Like I said, he works with Meeks as a Electornics engineer. He loves his job and is happy doing what he does

He never fully gets over Neil's death, though. He still gets choked up anytime his name is mentioned.

Anytime Pitts meets someone or notices someone acting too bubbly, too focused on other people's happiness and not their own, he makes sure to subtly check on them and spend more time with them (He feels a little guilty for not noticing something was wrong with Neil earlier and tries to make up for that with everyone he meets now.)

He's always afraid he's going to lose someone else in the same way he lost Neil

He doesn't ever want to be blindsided by that again.

KNOX

Is the first one Pitts tells, as he was the second one awake and the first one Pitts saw after he was told.

He thinks Pitts is lying to him at first, and gets mad at him for pulling such a bad prank on him

He runs to the bathroom and throws up when he realizes Pitts is being serious.

He's in denial after this, even with Pitts sitting in the bathroom with him before they go tell the others, he keeps begging Pitts to tell him he's joking

He never does.

He couldn't stop thinking about how happy Neil had been right after the play before he saw his dad, how he had been practically glowing on stage while performing

And he gets sick again when he remembers the way Neil's face looked from the backseat of his dads car as he stared at Knox and the others as he drove away for the last time

He feels like he let Neil down

Neil had always been there to support Knox in everything he did- he feels like he didn't do the same to Neil.

When they do eventually go tell the other poets, Knox is crying the entire time

Just barely pulls it together to go tell Todd. He knows how hard it is going to be on him.

Tries to convince the others to let Todd sleep, to just tell him when he wakes up, but they all insist he needs to know now, despite Knox's protests

He doesn't sleep that night. He stares at the ceiling wondering what he could've done differently to save his friends life.

He has to excuse himself from first class the next day he sees Neil's empty desk.

After Charlie was expelled, he had half the mind to go after Cameron himself for taking away another one of his friends, but he decides against it.

Knox goes on to become a successful yet unfulfilled lawyer, much to his parents satisfaction

Is still very close and in regular contact with Charlie. The two meetup often.

Sometimes he still has dreams where it was all just a big joke. Where he's back at Welton that morning and instead of running to the bathroom to be sick, Pitts laughs and tells Knox he was only kidding about his friends death

He wakes up with wet eyes and a wet face those nights.

Can you do a Headcannon about all the boys (better if it's together) comforting you after a fight with your parents or if you have low self-esteem?

I absolutely can! This one will be the poets comforting you after a fight with your parents!

Neil:

Oh boy, he knows what that’s like

He will be the most sympathetic person ever as soon as you tell him what happened

First thing he does: ask if you’re safe

If you say no, he goes completely series and takes every single precaution he needs to before addressing and evaluating the severity the situation

If you say yes, he takes a breath of relief but it’s right back to comfort mode

Instantly asks you what you need, what he can do to help etc

Whatever you need, he gets for you instantly

Hugs hugs hugs

If you’re okay with that! Obviously! He checks multiple times before he even thinks about hugging you

He’ll sit with you, give you lots of blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, anything to help comfort you and/or calm you down

Will listen to you scream, cry, yell, and rant about your parents for hours without a single interruption

If you tell him it’s okay to do so, he’ll talk shit about your parents with you

After you’re done ranting/crying/etc his next goal is to make you smile

He’ll turn on your favorite tv show/movie, get you you’re favorite food and drinks, and sits down to watch with you, cracking jokes with you until he hears you laugh

He makes sure you know he’s there for you no matter what the situation is, and if you ever need anything, he will get it for you or do it for you without second thought

Todd

God, parents are the worst, huh?

The second he sees your upset, he can kind of tell it’s because of your parents

He knows the feeling, trust me

He quickly pulls you into a soft hug, apologizing to you for having to go through any of that

He asks what happened and listens patiently the entire time you talk

If you need to cry, he’ll hold onto you while you do so, if you need to scream, he gives you pillows to scream into

He’ll probably call your parents assholes quiet a few times

Once you’re done, he assures you that you did absolutely nothing wrong and did in no way deserve their poor treatment

He tells you stories of arguments he’s had with his parents so you know you aren’t the only one going though this

He’ll sit with you for the rest of the day/night, trying to keep your mind off of it

Or, if you need to, he’ll spend the day/night listening to you rant and talk about how awful they are to you, he doesn’t mind either way, as long as it helps you feel better

1000% lets you stay with him for as long as you need if you need to get out of your house

Charlie

The second he sees you upset he’s ready to kick someone’s ass

HE comes to YOU before you get the chance to go to him

He heard from someone that you had seemed upset and instantly went to find you to make sure you’re okay

When you explain to him that it’s your parents that upset you, he gets even more angry

His parents aren’t exactly horrible to him, but they aren’t great either, so he knows where you’re coming from at-least somewhat

He will probably ramble about how shitty parents are for a second before stopping and asking you if you wanna talk about it

He’ll sit and listen intently, making a few snide comments towards your parents here and there

Once you get it all out of your system, his main goal Is to make you laugh

He’ll make jokes about your parents, call them stupid, childish insults, tell dramatic stories of the things “he would do to them”, anything he can do to make you smile or laugh

When he sees you even slightly smirk, he considers that a win

He’ll get serious for a second, assuring you that is wasn’t your fault and that they were the assholes here before he goes back to joking around with you about the situation

Jokes always make it feel less serious and painful, he knows that from personal experience, so he hopes his jokes about it make you feel a little less heavy and upset

Hangs out with you for the rest of the day/night

Expect him to give your parents a mean, nasty look the next time he sees them

Knox

Panic

You’d expect Todd to panic the most

Nope, it’s Knox.

His parents are actually good to him, so he doesn’t know first hand what it’s like, but he tries his absolute best to be sympathetic

After a bit of fumbling over his words and trying to figure out what’s happening, he calms down (atleast looks like he does) and asks what you need from him

He’ll do whatever you ask him to before settling down with you and letting you rant and talk about it

He might accidentally tell you “they’re your parents, I’m sure they still love you” or something along the lines

Once he realizes that upset you more, he profusely apologizes and lets you continue talking

He’ll hold your arm/hand/leg and draw small circles with his fingers to try and calm you down (with consent, ofc)

Once you’re done, he just apologizes that it happened and asks if there’s anything you want to do to help cheer you up or distract you

He will do anything you say you want to do happily

The next few days he comes up and checks in on you and how everything’s going

Meeks

You don’t need to say anything to him before he realizes that you’re upset and asks what’s up

When you tell him its your parents, he gets visibly upset but stays calm and asks if your safe and/or if you need help

If you say no, he’ll just sit down and let you talk

If you say yes, he lets you stay at his house and will do whatever is necessary to keep you safe and away from them

After that, he asks if you want to talk about it

When you say yes, he gladly sits down and listens to every word patiently, maybe asking a few questions and making a few comments here and there

He lets you lean on him, gives you hugs, holds your hand, and does really anything he thinks will help you feel better while you talk

After you finish talking, he will very gladly talk shit about your parents with you

He invites you to stay the night so the two of you can play games, watch movies and eat junk food to cheer up

Lets you pick every game you play, every movie you watch and every snack you guys eat

Pitts

The second he sees your upset, he opens his arms and hugs you as tight as he can

Quickly asks what’s wrong, if you’re hurt, who upset you etc

When you say your parents upset you, he just hugs you again and asks if you wanna talk about it

He sits and sympathetically listens to you the entire time,hardly even taking his eyes off you so you know he’s listening

As soon as you finish he hugs you again and asks what you wanna do to cheer up

He will very happily suggest the two of you make dinner and/or dessert together to take your mind off of it

He says baking always helps him, so he figures it’ll help you too

He’ll let you chose what the two of you cook together

Cameron

Confused older brother energy

He’s panicked when he sees you upset, but his big brother instinct kicks in and he really really wants to help

As soon as you come up to him upset, he gets the two of you sat down somewhere safe before asking questions

First thing he asks is if your parents are at fault

When you say yes, he asks if you’re safe and okay

If you say no, he will immediately start making a place for you in his house before addressing the situation and informing the authorities if he has to

If you say yes, he just prompts you to talk about it with him

He gives genuine advice as you speak, trying to comfort you and solve the problem at the same time

When you’re done, he asks if there’s anything he can do to help you either resolve the problem or atleast make you feel better

He will do whatever you need him to without any further questions, he’s just happy to help you out

If you want him to, he’ll talk shit about your parents with you, even if he feels bad about it afterwards

Absolutely absolutely soft Charlie owns my heart let’s go

He’s actually like a GOD at comforting people

He somehow always knows exactly what to say, what to do, how to act, all of it without a second thought

He gives really really good, tight, secure hugs, and he is NEVER the one to pull away from hugs first

Sometimes, he’ll be able to tell that you’re pulling away for your benefit and he’ll hold onto you even tighter and not let you go

He won’t hesitate to hold any bodies hand in public and in private if he can tell that they need the reassurance and comfort

The moment he meets someone he works towards memorizing their comfort music/shows/movies and all the foods and drinks they love and the moment he sees them having a bad day he is ready with all of it

He will sit on the phone with someone for hours if they ask him to for whatever reason

He won’t force them to talk if they don’t wanna, he’s fine just sitting together silently

He also will 100% fall asleep on call with you if you’re having a had night and he will ALWAYS make sure you fall asleep first before he even thinks about sleeping

If he knows someone is scared of something, he’ll act like it freaks him out too so they don’t feel weird or alone

He’s really good with little kids

Like moms would hire him off the street to babysit if they could type of good

Babies absolutely love him and the moment he looks at a baby it will burst out giggling and smiling at him

He’s surprisingly good at singing

He will sing you to sleep if you ask him (of course, after playfully teasing you about it)

He has a lot of lullabies memorized that he’ll sing to his friends when they are having a bad night or to any kid he’s been put in charge of

If someone is talking about something they’re super passionate about, he will make sure to ask a bunch of questions about it to keep them talking about it

If he sees them getting insecure about how much they’re talking, he’ll ask more questions that require even more talking

He will fight someone in a HEARTBEAT if they call somebody annoying for talking about what they like

He always stops and picks ladybugs, pull bugs, worms etc off of the sidewalk and puts them on the grass whenever he sees them

If he sees an animal he think is hurt he will drop whatever he’s doing to go look at it and make sure it’s okay

Protective™️

He’s not a great artist, but he’ll always draw little doodles for people just to make them smile

He will humiliate himself in public if it means seeing you smile or laugh on a bad day

If something embarrassing happens to someone, he’ll instantly do the same thing or something more embarrassing to drag the attention away from them

I absolutely can make more anderperry headcanons 🥰

Todd is a god at giving massages, so whenever Neil comes home from rehearsal with stiff muscles or an ache in his back or neck, Todd gladly gives him a massage to help him relax

When Neil comes home from rehearsal for a musical with bruises/scrapes, Todd always makes sure to tend to them, disinfecting the small ones and wrapping the bigger ones with bandages

Todd always has tea ready for Neil when he comes home, doesn’t matter if he gets home at 1 pm or 3 a.m, there will be hot tea sitting on the counter for Neil with a little note by it that usually says “I love you, hope you had a good day”

Whenever Neil is part of a musical, Todd always makes it a point to memorize all of the songs from it before the first performance because he knows how much it means to Neil

And knowing the words to the songs makes it easier to practice lines with Neil when he needs it

I mentioned before that they learned morse code to talk to each other, but they learned basic ASL too, so if Todd’s anxiety is so bad that he can’t speak, they use basic ASL to communicate

When they’re going to bed together Neil has a tendency to trace shapes/words into Todd’s back

Sometimes they make a little game out of it, Neil will trace something on Todd’s back with his finger and Todd tries to guess what it is

Todd always has a really hard time falling asleep. On nights where he absolutely can’t sleep for the life of him, he’ll usually slip out of bed and to sit in the living room and watch tv quickly

Neil always notices that Todd is gone as soon as he leaves the bed, and if Todd isn’t back in 15-30 minutes Neil will get up with their blanket around his shoulders, go to the living room and curl up next to Todd on the couch, wrapping the blanket around both of them before wordlessly going to sleep on the couch next to him

Sometimes Todd will wake him up and go back to bed with him, other times he’ll just continue watching TV until he falls asleep on the couch as well

Todd carries a Polaroid camera on him 24/7 and takes photos with Neil every chance he gets

He really loves taking candid shots of Neil, he keeps all the photos hung up on their wall

Whenever they go on walks together Todd stops and takes photos of every bird he sees while info-dumping about the species and Neil just watches him and stares at him with the most lovesick grin

Both of them live in an apartment off campus, but I think they’d go to the same community college

These two are literally soulmates, they balance each other out and are their best selves with each other

Charlie is very very affectionate

I like to think his love language is words of affirmation and physical touch

He always texts Knox things like “I love you, idiot<3” or “I miss you” everytime they’re not together

Knox’s love language is physical touch or acts of service

If there’s an email Charlie needs to send but hasn’t gotten around to? Knox does it for him. An assignment Charlie struggling with? Knox will finish it for him and always gets him a good grade

Charlie is a crow, straight up

If he sees something shiny he brings it to Knox, if he sees a cool looking rock he brings it to Knox, literally any small cool thing he finds while he’s outside gets brought to Knox

Knox liked to call Charlie his “little crow brained boyfriend” because of this

Knox is a walking heater, so when it’s winter Charlie always sticks extra close to him, and curls up extra close to him at night

Charlie is freezing cold constantly and because of that Is a huge blanket hog

They fight over the blankets a lot, like every night there is a war over the blankets

It usually ends with Knox pulling Charlie on top of him so he stops stealing the blankets off of him

Charlie drags Knox out to every party and club on the weekends

Knox always acts annoyed that he has to be there but he loves dancing with Charlie and seeing him have fun and let go of all his worries for a little bit

Plus Charlie gets extra affectionate when he’s drunk/high (which he usually is at parties), and Knox is never one to turn down a chance for extra attention

Charlie liked to sit on Knox’s lap every chance he gets, he’s even done it on the bus/train a few times just to fuck with him

Charlie and Knox dye their hair together at 3 a.m like stupid bisexual boyfriends do

Charlie takes candid photos of Knox a lot like when he’s reading, writing, or drawing

They take photos together a lot, Charlie’s Instagram is flooded with them

They have an Instagram page together, it’s all just photos they’ve taken together or of each other

Charlie was banned from making the captions of those photos because he kept makin them either VERY suggestive or made it sound like they were middle schoolers

They love to drive to the mountains and watch the sunrise/sunset together

They usually end up star-gazing after watching the sunsets

Charlie smokes weed/takes edibles, and if Knox isn’t doing it with him then he’s babysitting Charlie while he’s stoned

They share Charlie’s AirPods a lot, if they’re doing work for their classes, studying, walking down the street, they are always listening to music together

Knox made Charlie a playlist of songs that remind him of Charlie and he adds to it constantly

They take road trips together a lot, usually their spontaneous and not planned

They usually wind up out in the middle of no where with no hotels around, so they usually just cuddle up in the backseat and sleep there

Every Halloween they wear matching costumes

Sometimes the costumes will be iconic duos from movies or shows, other times it’s stupid things like an outlet and a plug(that costume was Charlie’s idea)

Knox is a hopeless romantic, so Valentine’s Day is very important to him

He always goes over the top, buying Charlie flowers, stuffed animals, his favorite snacks and drinks, and usually he’ll give him a poem and/or a drawing he did of Charlie

But it isn’t one sided, Charlie surprisingly loves Valentine’s Day too

He wasn’t always fond of it, but once he and Knox got together and he saw how much it meant to Knox he developed a love for the holiday

He usually gets Knox new sweaters/hoodies, flowers, candy, and lots of affection (and a little extra in the bedroom if you know what I mean ;D)

Charlie has 100% punched someone in the face for calling Knox a slur and would definitely do it again

Knox would never hurt a fly, he hates fights, but when they were walking down the street holding hands some bigot called Charlie a piece of shit f**got and Knox basically tackled the dude and beat the shit out of him

Charlie had to literally pull Knox off of the dude and he did so while laughing hysterically

Charlie tells everyone it was the day Knox became a real man
