So You Want to Have a Lucid Dream?
So You Want to Have a Lucid Dream?
Tumblr media
“From everything we know, if people really try to start engaging with the topic and maybe do some training and so on, most people at some point will have a lucid dream,” said Martin Dresler, a cognitive neuroscientist at Radboud University’s Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior in the Netherlands.Daniel Love, a lucid dream educator in Truro, England, said that he’s observed a wide range of experiences with lucid dreaming. “Over years of teaching, I found a huge variety in the abilities for people and some people who just can’t get past certain blockages,” he said. Skilled lucid dreamers may only have one every few weeks. There are two commonly recommended techniques for developing that skill, both of which take time and practice, and don’t always bear fruit. The first is to record your dreams in a journal and look for patterns within them. I noticed, for example, that many of my dreams take place in my parents’ attic and my elementary school gymnasium. Now when a dream takes place in either of those spaces, it should be easier for me to recognize it for what it is.The second technique often touted for promoting l Read the full article

After Boulder Mass Shooting, a City Grapples With Gun Control
After Boulder Mass Shooting, a City Grapples With Gun Control
Tumblr media
In the aftermath of the deadly mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla., in 2018, cities across the country began passing their own gun control laws when state and federal governments failed to act.The city of Boulder, Colo., was one of them, unanimously adopting a wide-ranging ban on the sale and possession of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and bump-stock devices. “I think it’s time to say ‘enough,’” Jill Adler Grano, the City Council member who proposed the ban, said after the council’s initial vote.Gun rights supporters filed an immediate challenge, arguing that only the state could regulate firearms in Colorado, and earlier this month, a state judge agreed. Boulder was prohibited from enforcing its nearly three-year-old assault weapons ban.Less than two weeks later a man armed with an assault-style weapon walked into a Boulder supermarket and opened fire, killing 10 people. The gunman could have purchased his weapon in another town, but there has been a particularly keen sense of dismay and frustration in a city that tried, and failed, to prevent one of the most horrific kinds of gun violence.“My heart is broken,” said Ms. Adler Grano, who is no longer on the City Read the full article

M.L.B. Will Analyze Spin Rate to Detect Ball Doctoring
M.L.B. Will Analyze Spin Rate to Detect Ball Doctoring
Tumblr media
Doctoring baseballs with foreign substances to increase spin and movement has been around for as long as baseball has been played. To try to combat the practice, Major League Baseball is going high tech for the 2021 season, adding spin rate analysis to its arsenal of methods for detecting changes and enforcing existing policies. In a memo distributed to teams on Tuesday, Michael Hill, a senior vice president for baseball operations, detailed the enhanced monitoring process. There will be increased scrutiny of club spaces, inspection and documentation of balls taken out of play and, in the biggest change from previous methods, the league will use Statcast data to compare spin rates for players who are suspected of doctoring balls, checking to see if the numbers for the game in question differ significantly from their career norms.Umpire enforcement on the field will stay consistent with past practices, according to Hill’s memo. “The foregoing enhanced monitoring measures, however, will provide the commissioner’s office with a separate evidentiary basis to support a finding that a player has violated the foreign substance rules,” he said. The spitball and other so-called freak deliveries were banned from the sport in 1920, with pitchers initially given one year Read the full article

Texas A&M Makes Sweet 16 With Overtime Buzzer Beater
Tumblr media
Jordan Nixon saved Texas A&M from being the highest seed knocked out of the tournament so far with a layup at the buzzer in overtime that gave the Aggies an 84-82 win over Iowa State.Seventh-seeded Iowa State held the lead for most of the game and ended the third quarter with a 9-point advantage. But the second-seeded Aggies — who were pushed hard in their first-round win over 15th-seeded Troy — were not going down without a fight.A jumper by Nixon coupled with a layup by center Ciera Johnson with a minute on the clock in regulation brought the Aggies to within a point of the Cyclones. Ashley Joens, who finished with 32 points and 18 rebounds for Iowa State, clapped back with a turnaround jumper. Nixon then made a driving layup to send the game to overtime, and started overtime with a 3-pointer that gave the Aggies a lead for the first time. The teams continued to volley until the end and were tied with a second to go, when Nixon broke away for her layup at the buzzer. She finished with 35 points. The Alamodome erupted in the loudest applause of the tournament, and the Aggies breathed a sigh of relief. Texas A&M will play in its third consecutive Sweet 16.In a postgame interview, Nixon dedicated her performance to her high school coach, Dave Edwards, who died on March 24, 2020, after contracting the coronavirus.“Today was Read the full article

David Cameron faces investigation into possible lobbying law breach
Tumblr media
A formal investigation has been launched into whether David Cameron breached lobbying laws through his work on behalf of Greensill Capital, according to reports. However, the Guardian understands the former prime minister will say he was acting as an employee for the firm. According to guidance by the register of consultant lobbyists, people who lobby on behalf of their own organisation do not need to declare themselves on the register.Cameron has come under growing pressure to explain himself amid allegations that he contacted the chancellor, Rishi Sunak on his private phone last April while working as an adviser for Greensill. At the time the firm, which collapsed earlier this month, was trying to secure access to hundreds of thousand Read the full article

Rob Bonta Is Named Attorney General in California
Rob Bonta Is Named Attorney General in California
Tumblr media
The new state law giving the attorney general a pivotal role in police shootings also heightened interest in the appointment, as civil rights advocates pushed the governor to name someone who would aggressively investigate police misconduct, while law enforcement groups lobbied for a traditional law-and-order candidate.Against that backdrop, the attorney general vacancy was less a political plum than an opportunity to disappoint factions. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had urged Mr. Newsom to appoint Representative Adam Schiff, who has long aspired to statewide office, and who, as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, managed Mr. Trump’s first impeachment. Mr. Newsom also was urged by various groups to name an African-American, a woman, a member of the L.G.B.T.Q. community, another Latino or an Asian-American or Pacific Islander.Supporters of other candidates noted that Mr. Newsom had already made history with several appointments: In November, he appointed Martin Jenkins, who is African-American and openly gay, to the California Supreme Court. In December, as Ms. Harris was about to be inaugurated, he named California’s secretary of state, Alex Padilla, to serve the remainder of her term in the U.S. Senate, the first Latino in California history to hold that office.Later the same day, he appointed Shirley Weber, who represented San Diego in the State A Read the full article

Tribune board backs Alden Global’s bid for newspaper chain over Maryland hotel magnate’s.
Tribune board backs Alden Global’s bid for newspaper chain over Maryland hotel magnate’s.
Tumblr media
Tribune Publishing’s board recommended that shareholders approve a purchase offer from the hedge fund Alden Global Capital over a higher bid from a Maryland hotel executive, according to a securities filing Tuesday. The filing comes a week after Stewart W. Bainum Jr., a hotel magnate, made an $18.50 per share offer for the whole company. Mr. Bainum initially had agreed with Alden to spin off three of Tribune’s titles — The Baltimore Sun and two smaller Maryland papers — at the price of $65 million. But Negotiations between Alden and Mr. Banium stalled over details of operating agreements that would be in effect as the Maryland papers transitioned from one owner to another, prompting Mr. Banium to pursue a bid to buy all of Tribune.Alden, Tribune's largest shareholder with a 32 percent stake, agreed last month to buy the rest of the company at $17.25 per share and take it private in a deal that would value the company at $630 million. Alden would buy of all the company’s remaining papers, which include The Chicago Tribune and The Daily News.Alden has been criticized for laying off jour Read the full article

Republicans Push for Greater Power Over How Elections Are Run
Republicans Push for Greater Power Over How Elections Are Run
Tumblr media
Jon Greenbaum, the chief counsel for the nonpartisan Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, said Republicans were engaged in an “all-out effort to change the voting rules in lots of ways that would allow for greater opportunity for them to challenge the eligibility of electors,” and that the party would “add micromanagement by state legislatures to the process of running an election.”State Representative Barry Fleming, a Republican who has been a chief sponsor of the bills in Georgia, did not respond to requests for comment. In a hearing on the bill this month, he defended the provisions, saying, “We as legislators decide how we will actually be elected, because we decide our own boards of elections and those of the counties we are elected from.”Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia, a Republican, has not weighed in publicly on the changes to election administration and oversight. Asked for comment, his office offered only that he was in favor of “strengthened voter ID protections.”At the local level, at least nine Republican counties in Georgia have passed local legislation since November dissolving their current election boards — often composed of three Republicans and two Democrats — and replacing them with a new membership entirely appointed by the county commissioner, resulting in single-party boards.A new law in Iowa restricting acces Read the full article
