You know guys, Dalinar ASKED Kaladin about becoming king of Urithiru. He didn’t demand, he didn’t spring it on him, he didn’t force, and his only request was that Kaladin take time to THINK about the proposition before rejecting it. He even made sure Kaladin knew that this was not a situation where he was the only one possible, if Kaladin says no there are other options.
This isn’t Dalinar dumping responsibility on Kaladin and walking away, this is him trusting Kaladin to know his own limits, know his own mind, and know his own capacity. This is Dalinar bringing up a need and ASKING if Kaladin can accommodate it.
There needs to be a line of succession. It’s that, or we can let riots and tyrants fight it out. I personally don’t think that Kaladin should accept. I don’t think he would make a good king, and that does not seem to be what his arc is building towards. But the fact that Dalinar ASKED does not make Dalinar evil, it makes him a human who trusts Kaladin to be an adult and be honest about what he is and is not willing to do. Kaladin is a viable option for king of Urithiru. He does have experience in leadership, and he is well known and liked by the people. Rather than deciding for Kaladin that Kaladin is too broken and couldn’t handle it and not even asking, Dalinar brought the choice to Kaladin and made sure that Kaladin knew that it was his CHOICE.
How is that bad for Kaladins mental health? “Hey, I respect you as a leader and a person, but I also respect that you have limitations that I do not fully understand. This is the problem I’m facing, and naming you as my heir is a potential solution. Is this a viable option, or do I need to pursue other potential solutions?” How is that disrespectful?! How is it harming Kaladins mental health to be treated like an adult who knows his own capacity and can be trusted to make his own decisions?!
OMG, why do some people even read these books if they are just going to read every character who interacts with Kaladin in the most negative light possible? Like, what is there to enjoy about hate? And why is my feed so full of hate for the Kholins? They are not perfect, but I feel defensive of them simply for the blatantly bad faith reading of their characters!

The most realistic thing about the Stormlight Archive is that the city where bits of gods reside, and what are essentially messiahs live, is a walkable city.
Only a walkable city could be that holy.

Urithiru: World's Most Expensive Cat Tree
@blindradiant helped me realize something. If Szeth is a cat (which, let's be real, he has The Most cat energy ever), and he was the first to Urithiru, then wasn't he just being a cat and finding the highest spot he could perch on? Which means Urithiru is just a giant cat tree?

Talking about the bridgemen is one thing. But Nomad thinking the figure he was seeing was Kaladin? That's another completely saddening and different thing. He was hoping he was going to see Kaladin, even when he knew it couldn't be possible. Because, the way I understood it, Nomad knows that Kal can't be in a planet far away from Roshar. But at the same time, it kinda seems like Kaladin is still alive, or at least was when Nomad left Roshar, which could mean that he'll survive Wind and truth (maybe it's just me hoping he survives, because I love him and don't trust Sanderson).
Anyway, the person Nomad saw wasn't Kal, it was Hoid! He's always welcome in any book. And even if Nomad didn't want Wit to tell him a story he did anyways, because he's Hoid. However, this specific story was really interesting, because it was about Hoid himself! And that's pretty big, because he doesn't usually talk about his past. Oh, and I really liked how Nomad basically told Hoid to fuck off because he never took the time to visit him when they were both loving in Urithiru. Slay King, he kinda deserved it.

back to say that i’m alive and still reading oathbringer, uni has been kicking my ass these past few months.
I just read that whole wit/shallan scene, the one about shallan forgiving herself and my dudes that me tear up a little
the azure/kaladin dynamic is very interesting, she talks differently than the people of roshar, just like a certain blade master (iykyk)
I hope to finish it in the coming weeks so i can give you guys a proper review.
(I’ve also seen the posts some of you guys tagged me and I plan on getting to it too)

Are the gems in the Urithiru gemstone archive linked to each order, as in the ones recorded in sapphire are recorded by windrunners? There’s probably a WoB on this, but I can’t find it.

Adding OP’s tags because they add context that I’m responding to:
Tumblr media
The sum of the problems with Lirin and Kaladin’s relationship wasn’t just that they beefed for a few months. Kaladin’s entire childhood was overshadowed by Lirin’s aspirations for him. Lirin never showed any interest in the things Kaladin wanted to explore. He never gave his son the space to figure out who he is or who he wants to be. He decided, “my son will be a surgeon,” and did not ever stop to consider whether it was what Kaladin wanted for himself. He pushed Kaladin’s nose to the grindstone and argued with Kaladin any time he tried to say he wasn’t sure that was what he wanted. The way Lirin raised his son is the reason Kaladin experiences so much self doubt. So much of Kaladin’s childhood was his father TELLING him who he is. “You’re too gentle to be a soldier, you cry at every patient that comes in” “you’re not a soldier, you’re a surgeon” (not exact quotes but I don’t wanna get out of bed and go through my books). Kaladin’s PTSD starts when he’s 8 years old, exposed to injuries (aka body gore) before he has the tools to understand or process it, and Lirin’s response to that was “you have to learn when to care.”
Lirin was the kind of father to look at his 8 year old son, trying to figure out who and what he wanted to be, and instead of giving Kal space to figure it out for himself, forced his own idea of what his son should be onto him. If Kal had been given that space when he was young, he probably have decided he wanted to be a surgeon anyway, it does look like that’s where his story is going. But so much of the pain and confusion and self doubt that he had is because Lirin wouldn’t give him the space to figure it out for himself, to know that’s what he wanted. Lirin was so stuck on his own ideals and so sure that he knew what was best that he didn’t care how anyone else felt about it.
The internet is full of stories of people talking about the amount of pain that they endured because their parents raised them the same way. We know that it’s damaging. We know that it causes trauma. Thats the reason for the Lirin hate. Yeah, it’s messed up that he didn’t support his son during the occupation of Urithiru. It’s especially messed up that Lirin seemed to think the best possible outcome of that situation was that all the humans became enslaved and all the radiants got murdered. But the problems with Lirin go much deeper and start much further back than the events of Rhythm of War.
(Also sorry if this is kind of rambling. I tried to organize it, but I’m still groggy from getting woken up multiple times by my power cutting in and out. Hashtag HoustonStrong I guess)
I still don’t get the Lirin hate
