My Experience (so far) reading The Sunlit Man after only reading The Stormlight Archive (incl. WaT) and the first Mistborn book:
Me, seeing Nomad say 'Storms' on the second page: Oh! He's Rosharian! I wonder what cool backstory he's got..
Tumblr media
Me, about an hour later: ITS FUCKIGN SIGZIL??!?!??!??!

Kelsier: *solves everything by killing noblemen*
Everyone on Scadrial: If only Kelsier was here, he'd have a great way to solve this problem.
Every nobleman on Roshar when they meet an assassin: I bet Kelsier planned this, it feels like something he'd do.

There's something so funny about seeing Hoid panicking. Yes, I know that Odium wants him dead, or rather, vaporised, and yes, I know that the future of the Cosmere is at risk at the moment, but having Sigzil tell him how incredibly stupid he's been for bringing a dawnshard (one of the most powerful weapons in the Cosmere, which, by the way, he shouldn't even be carrying arround) to Roshar, where Odium could take it. Sigzil doesn't even know what a dawnshard is, but just from the little explanation Wit gives him he already knows it's a bad idea. He deserves to be terrified for having such a stupid idea. I'm very sad for Sig, tho, he doesn't know what he's gotten himself into, and judging by The sunlit man his future doesn't seem pretty fun.

I remember being a little shocked at how Nomad was acting for most of The Sunlit Man, the way he just didn't care about others around him and how he spoke so bitterly and with no respect for anyone. Now, I know that it made sense considering what he had been through, but after realizing he was Sigzil, that really bothered me. What had happened to that curious, excited Windrunner that we know from the Stormlight Archive?
But now I just finished rereading The Way of Kings and you know what? Sigzil acted almost exactly like that when he was a slave. Before Kaladin saved him and the rest of Bridge Four, Sigzil was bitter and rude and just didn't care about anything or anyone.
It's great writing from Sanderson, of course. But my heart breaks even more for Sigzil. The fact that he had to go back to that mentality that he had when he was a slave so long after... It's just tragic.

Finished The Sunlit Man and like yeah I fully believe I’d also still be inspired by Kaladin Stormblessed hundreds of years into the future

Man, after reading Sunlit Man, the Sigzil POVs in WAT are like watching a train barrel toward a blown out bridge with no power to stop it

- chapter 118, Wind and Truth
That was a gut-punch. A good one. Because … oof.
(SPOILERS for The Sunlit Man included.)
So, I still don’t know how Sigzil’s story ends in The Stormlight Archive, but it’s been interesting to watch, having read The Sunlit Man. I don’t remember too many details from it, but I remembered his spren’s name was Auxilary, and how they referred to Nomad as their “squire.”
I had a different impression of them than of Vienta, but I figured some kind of character growth for her, perhaps—Sig and his companion clearly went through a lot before Sunlit Man. And I haven’t entirely ruled out the possibility either—maybe Vienta does see Sigzil as a squire in her mind, but felt no need to voice it until she needed to communicate more than her abilities would allow, as Aux had been partly eaten by a Dawnshard.
I had noticed that the highspren—12124, at least—refers to themselves as a “knight” and their Radiant as a “squire.” And the Skybreakers are the other Order that grants flight.
I still don’t know if I’m chasing a red herring or what, because Maya and Testament prove that “deadeye” is not “dead.” And then the death rattle of Sig’s death.
… AND THEN THIS HAPPENED.
Fuuuuuuck, what a choice to make. And he couldn’t talk it over with her beforehand. And he doesn’t know any of the details about Maya and Testament. We know they’re not truly dead, and they can still live … but Sig didn’t know that.
And yet, it was the only way he knew that would prevent her from dying for good.
I’d say she suffered the worse damage than him, but I won’t discount that there was self-sacrifice on his part.
I keep thinking of “WE! CHOSE!” from Rhythm of War. And while it was the Radiant instead of the spren, he’s going to feel that choice.
I wonder what Vienta is going through right now….

Having started The Sunlit Man, I’m feeling like all four of the secret projects are in their own ways about regaining hope in your own ability to do good, to make a positive difference, after you’d given up on either yourself or on the possibility of the world being better. Painter, the protagonist of Frugal Wizard, and the protagonist of The Sunlit Man all fit this. Initially I thought Tress was the outlier as this doesn’t apply to either Tress or Charlie so much, but then I realized that it does fit the crew of Crow’s pirate ship, who don’t want to be robbers and killers but can’t find a way out of what their lives have become.

Wind and Truth spoilers. The Sunlit Man spoilers. As in, huge spoilers! Ending related spoilers! For both books!
In the Sunlit Man we see Zellion summon Shardplate. I (and many others) assumed this meant he must have reached the fourth ideal in at least one radiant order.
But he hadn't reached the fourth ideal by the end of Wind and Truth. And we also learn that you don't need an oath to summon Shardplate. You just need a bond to a group of plate spren. And there were spren in that caravan. "Even some windspren and other smaller ones."
Zellion was never a Skybreaker.
Zellion never swore the fourth ideal of the Windrunners.

All of these Bridge Four references are actually going to make me cry. Nomad (whose real identity I already know because I got spoiled before even starting to read the book) was thinking about Rock's stew, and made an internal joke about being airsick. Not to mention he's constantly thinking about Kaladin. And that's so cute but at the same time so sad.

Can I blame Moash for Sigzil's personality change and overall depression in The Sunlit Man? Because it now kinda seems like it was his fault. Sigzil was NOT a bad leader nor did he make bad decisions.
