I'm never trying to make drivers feel guilty about their pollution. Instead, I'm always trying to state the importance of more-compact developments that better enable alternatives to driving such as walking and transit.
Personal car trips need to be de-centered in our development patterns.
With that caveat...
Research over the last few years has revealed more and more harm coming from the ultra-fine particle pollution of tire and brake dust. One report found that 78 percent of ocean microplastics are from synthetic tire rubber. Others have found links to bad health outcomes in humans.
Despite the benefits of switching to electric powered vehicles, it's a problem they can't solve -- in fact, the heavier weight of EVs can worsen the pollution. One study found that EVs can shed around 20 percent more from their tires due to their higher weight compared to internal combustion vehicles.
Things I'm not saying: "ban all cars" or "EVs are evil" or "anyone driving a car should be ashamed." I don't think that and I'm not saying that.
What I am saying: every development going forward needs to be intentionally designed to contribute to a cure for car dependency, and to not sustain or exacerbate the problem.

Lauren Magliozzi: Urban wildfires disrupt streams and their tiny inhabitants − losing these insects is a warning of bigger water problems
A tiny, vibrant world thrives along the rocky bottom of most streams. As sunlight filters through the water, mayfly nymphs, no larger than your fingernail, cling to algae-coated cobbles. Their brushlike mouthparts scrape the greenish coating, leaving faint trails as they feed. Six spindly legs anchor them against the current, while feathery gills wave gently, drawing oxygen from the flowing…

Did you know that the Great Lakes hold 1/5th of the WORLD’s fresh surface water?
“This film will take viewers on a journey across the Great Lakes to hear voices on all sides of this issue, including residents who live in a community devastated by the nation’s largest inland oil spill along Michigan’s Kalamazoo River”
The massive freshwater ecosystem is a critical part of our environment, and subsequently our infrastructure; This fact does nothing to justify public deception. Line 5 has been around for more than half a century. Whatever side you’re on of whatever border in question, the most crucial safety protocol is knowledge.
There is currently a lot of misinformation about the history of leaks and spills from Line 5.
Enbridge Inc and corporate entities like it are responsible for natural resource management- accountability is a crucial element of that responsibility!
Enbridge Inc. wants to be a responsible steward too- their 2023 Sustainability Report highlights promising steps forward thanks to their Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan. But I see this as one of the biggest points of contention between U.S and Canada- With Trump’s push for deregulation, especially in regards to safety standards, and the economic priorities of the EPA being clearer than ever under Lee Zeldin, America is being asked to loose hope.
According to Enbridge’s current fact sheet about the newest restoration of the pipeline, the Great Lakes Tunnel Project, their environmental promises are limited to things like reusing rock cuttings and topsoil.
Accountability never threatens freedom!
Please consider watching and sharing this great documentary by Detroit PBS💗
And follow me for more environmental news! Knowledge is power- don’t let your hope be crushed by boots of ignorance and greed. This land is our land🌿

The Hindon River, once a vital water source for agriculture and fisheries in Western Uttar Pradesh, has become a symbol of environmental decay. Flowing through the region’s industrial belt, it now carries untreated waste, severely polluting its waters.
Originating from the Shivalik ranges and joining the Yamuna in Noida, the river has been marked "dead" by the CPCB in 2015 due to extreme pollution. Its ecological balance has been devastated by industrialization and urbanization, rendering it unable to support aquatic life.

Lowering carbon pollution through less car-centric urban design
Georgia is particularly well-poised to reduce carbon pollution through better urban planning ("better" meaning: less car dependent & more walkable), potentially eliminating 295 kg of CO2 per capita, annually, through land-use reform. This is according to an analysis from RMI (Rocky Mountain Institute) of national data.
Tumblr media
The analysis' data shows that a major boost in housing production in less car-dependent places will significantly address our carbon pollution problems. Among policies that can help: ending exclusionary zoning; parking reform; eliminating minimum lot sizes, unit sizes, and setback requirements; and legalizing accessory dwelling units (ADUs).
And of course housing affordability, including subsidized homes for lower income groups, should be a part of these improvements so that the benefits of walkable places are equitably felt.
This is not to undercut the crucial importance of making gains at the local level with improved urbanism -- for carbon reduction and for many other reasons. But keeping an eye on statewide goals is also important and analyses like this help to define the successes of that level of change.
