A CASE OF LIMERENCE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⸰ .° ☆ ° ☆ °. ⸰ ━━━━━━━━━━━━
PAIRING: oc!character x rafe cameron
SUMMARY:  From the moment she had become a Cameron, Rose opened the doors of her brand new home to her goddaughter and thus creating a cycle that lasted almost a decade. Each year following that one fateful summer, Leni Blythe waited for school to be over so she could pack her bags and jet over to the Outer Banks. Her months spent on the islands have always been one of her most joyful ones, so her decision to spend the entirety of her gap year there wasn’t at all surprising.
Unfortunately, life had different plans. In a span of only four months the lives of the Cameron family had changed drastically and Leni had no other choice but to rethink her decision. She was just about to buy a train ticket to Paris when Rose called. Leni’s mother was nothing short of dubious: the idea of her daughter living with a family drowning in grief was a terrible idea, but Rose was persistent. It took a bit of convincing -  three whole days to be exact - but it worked.
Leni was on a plane headed straight to the Outer Banks in such a short time, she completely forgot that two whole summers had gone since she was last there. There was no old friend group to reunite with or an apartment to share with Sarah. Only an empty grief stricken home and a boy her godmother told her to stay away from.
WARNINGS: Will eventually get pretty smutty; mentions of drinking and drugs, coarse language etc etc.
A/N:  It’s been a while since I’ve written fanfiction (or written anything aside from half-assed short stories and poetry), but I’ve been meaning to get back into writing for a while now and if that’s by creating OBX fanfics so be it! Another very important thing to pay attention to is the following: This is an AU fanfiction of sorts; several themes from the show will be in play such as the whole treasure hunting plot, but it’s incredibly played down. Here they are very normal teens whose drama stems from normal teen stuff. A lot of plot related things that do not match the show’s original plot will be revealed as the story goes along. And finally, this is going to be a mix of SMAU and regular written fanfiction because I couldn’t decide between the two, so I guess why not both ?

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗲 - The eighteen year old and somewhat reluctant protagonist of the story. Commonly known by Leni, she only bares good memories of her time spent in the Outer Banks. Her mother and Rose Cameron are best friends or at least were until Leni and her family suddenly decided to move to Germany overnight, uprooting Leni’s entire life and forcing a brand new start. In order to keep some sense of normalcy, her mother - with a very heavy heart - decided to go forth with Rose's proposition and allow Leni to spend her summers in the US.

Xaden
Xaden had walked these trails and paths many dozen times in his life. Once or maybe twice with his father, then many more times as a grown man. Whenever the life he was born into became too much, too convoluted, too frustrating, he came out here into the mountain forests above Aretia to get grounded again, to find his way back to what truly mattered. Sometimes, he wandered alone through these woods, sometimes Garrick, Bodhi, or Liam accompanied him, and on a few occasions, it had even been all of them, with Imogen and Sloane, when they'd been spending a group holiday in the large house he'd inherited.
But never before had he brought anyone else. Violet was the first.
"Oh, wow!" she exclaimed as they stepped out of the trees and onto the wide meadow that lay nestled against the side of the mountain. Her eyes were wide as she took it all in, the colourful carpet of wildflowers contrasting with the rugged rock faces, the clear blue sky above them so much closer than down in the valley. And with the sun gleaming in her hair, she looked even more beautiful.
Chuckling disbelievingly, she took a few steps further away from the trees, gaping as she turned left and right. "This…this is amazing."
Xaden watched her with a crooked smile. "Prettier than in the movie?"
Laughing, Violet turned to beam at him. "Much prettier. And since you're not rushing around and uprooting trees, it's so much less weird, too."
"I'm sorry I don't sparkle, though," he teased.
Chuckling, she shook her head, then let her gaze wander around again, and he couldn't blame her. The sight of this wondrous place amidst the high mountain peaks around them…it overwhelmed him every time, too. Although, when Xaden looked back at Violet, her expression had slightly fallen, almost wistfully as she took a few steps with one arm wrapped around herself.
"Is…everything okay?"
His words made Violet perk up and she sucked in a breath before giving him an apologetic smile. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just…lost in thought," she added at his raised eyebrow.
Xaden nodded but couldn't hold back the slight frown. This wasn't the first time she seemed to drift off into her mind since he'd picked her up this morning. But, well…she would tell him if something bothered her, when she was ready. He hoped so, at least.
Instead of pushing her, he held out his hand, content when she took it without hesitation, and drew her in for a slow kiss. "There's something else I wanted to show you," he murmured after pulling back just enough to speak.
Violet hummed, expectantly, and so he tugged her along, with her hand so comfortably in his. Without taking his eyes off her, he lead her further across the meadow, waiting for when—
Her eyes grew wide as they reached the right spot. She didn't let go of his hand but moved forwards on her own now, further onto the hill top that ended at a sheer cliff a few feet ahead.
"Is that…Aretia?" she asked, her eyes shining with awe as she looked down into the valley.
Xaden nodded, his eyes finally following hers. "Yeah. She looks beautiful from up here, doesn't she?" And she did. Nestled perfectly between the mountains and the lake, the city— a city that could have been his in another life— looked so peaceful, the roofs made from the green stone of this area shimmering like a sea of emeralds.
"She does," Violet murmured, a serene smile on her face. "Wow. I never knew such a place existed here. How is it possible that, with this view, this place is not a crowded ‘insider tip’?"
Xaden shrugged, the idea of hundreds of tourists flooding this place making him grimace. "Well, mostly because it's private ground, I assume. Don't worry, I don't own the entire mountain," he added at her alarmed look, grinning, then pointed at the far end of the meadow. "The lodge is just a five minute walk through those trees over there."
Violet gaped at him. "And you made me hike for hours the long way around?"
Xaden's lips twitched. "Was it really so bad?" It had only been two hours of comfortable walking, a far shorter route than they could have taken.
Violet let out a sigh, her features softening. "No, I guess not," she said with a chuckle. "But I am glad that I don't have to walk the whole way back."
Grinning, Xaden leaned in to place a light kiss onto her cheek. "Told you I could carry you back if needed." Violet groaned and swatted at his chest, but there was a light in her eyes, amusement flickering that made Xaden's grin widen further. "There she is, my Violence. See? You're not completely exhausted, after all."
"Oh, you—" Violet began, but then trailed off, shaking her head and chuckled. "Well, you were right there. And I have to admit, I enjoyed it. More than I expected," she added sheepishly, stretching onto her toes and now placing a light kiss on his cheek in return.
Xaden enjoyed the contact, his eyes falling shut for a moment, before he nodded in the direction of the cliffs. "Ready for our picnic?"
Violet hummed in agreement and, again hand in hand, they walked over to a spot right at the edge where the lush grass of the meadow made way for a flat slab of stone, the mountain slightly protruding over the valley at this spot.
"I hope you're not afraid of heights?" he asked as he let the sturdy rucksack slide from his shoulders. "Because it goes down quite deep there."
Violet's eyes were all but gleaming with excitement as she made another small step towards the cliff's edge and peeked down. "No, I'm not. I love heights."
Xaden stepped behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, bending down to rest his chin on her shoulder. "Same as me, then," he murmured against her neck. Her quiet laughter was sweet like honey in his ears.
He wouldn't have minded staying like this all day, just holding her for a while. But they hadn't prepared their picnic just to simply ignore it, so he eventually stepped back..
"Let me guess," Violet said as he spread the large picnic blanket over the stone surface. "This is not the first time this place gets used for a picnic?"
Xaden threw her a thoughtful look. Was she hedging whether he'd brought other dates here before? But no. There was only open curiosity in her eyes, a soft smile on her lips as she looked at him.
"No, it's not," he confirmed with a light chuckle. "One time, Liam, Garrick, and I even took the hard route to get here." He pointed down the cliff, and Violet gaped. Xaden grinned, but then added a little quieter, "It's my favourite place. I love coming here, to think, to calm down, or to spend time with my friends."
"I see." she replied, and if possible, her smile had turned even softer.
They settled in for their picnic, with cheese cubes, nuts, vegetable sticks, chilled juice spritzer— because alcohol and cliffs were not a good combination— and some mini quiches they'd brought from a small bakery. Xaden had also taken a piece of their chocolate cake with him — a speciality of the house and an old family recipe, as the young girl behind the counter had assured him. They'd also had a lemon-cheese cake variation with blueberries, but Violet had opted for fresh berries from the market instead.
"Wow, this one's really good," he muttered after taking a first bite. "Maybe even better than the one at Dylan's."
"Well, the girl did promise you that it would be the best chocolate cake you've ever tried," Violet hummed, her eyes shining bright blue with happiness. "And her dad made it, after all, so she couldn't have been wrong there." She popped a few more blueberries into her mouth, her expression thoughtful. "May I have a taste, too?"
Xaden raised an eyebrow but offered her the plate without resistance. "Sure. But I thought anything chocolate isn't your thing?"
Reaching for the fork, Violet shrugged. "True. But with your praise, I thought I'd give it another try." She pushed a tiny portion into her mouth, then cocked her head, humming. "Well this…this really isn't so bad," she said with a small laugh.
"Told you so," he teased, a smile tugging at his lips.
They shared the cake, occasionally feeding each other, until even the last crumbs were gone. "Mmh, that was good," Violet sighed as she let herself fall back onto the soft blanket. Her arms were crossed over her eyes, her lips pulled into a soft smile, and Xaden simply couldn't take his eyes off her.
She was just so beautiful, mesmerising, perfect. Her light skin seemed to gleam, her lips rosy and full. Even her hair seemed shinier and fuller out here in the sun, inviting him to undo her simple braid and play with those intriguing silver strands. Well, maybe later.
With a content sigh, he lowered himself down onto his arm next to her, his head propped up on his hand. "So good that you even forgot about the last three blueberries?" he teased, reaching for where they lay in their little cardboard basket.
"Oh, how could I? Can't let them go to waste." A smirk played around her lips before she opened her mouth, waiting with her tongue partially stuck out.
The sight made Xaden's pulse quicken, made heat pool low in his body. He took a deep steadying breath then brought the last berries to her mouth. But when he placed them on her tongue, she quickly lifted her head and closed her lips around his fingers, her eyes open, gleaming with mischief.
Fuck, she would be the death of him.
"Is this how you want to play?" he purred, keeping his fingers in her mouth and applying the tiniest bit of pressure onto her tongue.
A beautifully breathy little noise built in her throat, and a moment later, her cheeks hollowed and she sucked on his fingers, low moan and all.
"Fuck…" he grunted, his cock instantly twitching with interest. "You know, if it's something to suck on you want…"
Violet pulled her lips off his fingers with an audible pop, then threw him a sultry look from beneath her lashes. "What I want is your cock," she whispered, an endearing blush spreading over her cheeks. "I don't care where or how. Though, if you want another snack, I wouldn't mind that, either."
Chuckling low under his breath, Xaden shook his head. Fuck, he loved to see how that shell of defensive insecurity was slowly cracking open around her. Reaching for the condom box they always kept ready and placing it at a convenient distance for later, he reached for her and rolled them around until she sat on top of him. "I might have an idea, then."
A good while later, Xaden rolled onto his back, trying to catch his breath. "Shit," he grunted, the rush of hormones making it hard to think straight. "Never thought sex out in the open would be so…"
Fuck, he had no words. Incredible. Thrilling. Downright divine. All of that.
Beside him, Violet was faring little better. "I know," she gasped. "Me neither."
They both broke out in low breathless laughter, Violet rolling onto her side to snuggle against him. With quick practised motions, he took care of the condom, then shifted to better accommodate her.
"Was this what you had in mind?" he murmured as he reached for his discarded shirt to drape it over her bare body.
Violet, with her eyes closed, merely hummed in confirmation and huddled closer. Was she falling asleep? Well, Xaden couldn't really blame her, even he felt exhausted after their little tryst just now.
With her head resting on his upper arm already, he threw the other across her waist and all but curled himself around her.
Mewling, Violet burrowed even deeper into his embrace. "Mmh, you smell so good," she mumbled, then grew entirely quiet, warm and heavy against him.
Smiling, Xaden settled in next to her, using the rucksack as support for his head. Maybe a little nap wasn't even such a bad idea.
. o O o .
Violet
"I can't believe you just let me fall asleep," Violet lamented, not for the first time, as she let herself slump onto the plush sofa in Xaden's lodge.
The house was amazing, with the front that faced towards the valley being entirely made of glass and offering a fantastic view. It was also huge, with enough space so that each of his friends had their own designated room with spare clothes and all, but Violet tried not to think too much about that. She wasn't with him because of his money, she kept reminding herself. Forced herself not to be intimidated by it.
Chuckling, Xaden placed two steaming mugs with hot chocolate onto the low table in front of her. Earlier, when they'd gone shopping for their little trip up here, she'd picked a box of ginger-and-chamomile tea, to soothe her occasionally racing thoughts. But when Xaden had mentioned cocoa, she'd opted for that instead. Even though she didn't even want to think about how strange it was that she was craving chocolate all of a sudden.
Fuck Rhiannon for giving her stupid ideas.
…maybe, a cup of tea would have been better, after all.
"There's nothing wrong with being tired," Xaden assured her, sitting down next to her. "Mountain air can do that. And, well…" He smirked. "I can always take it as a compliment for tiring you out so thoroughly."
She swatted at his arm with faux-indignation but couldn't keep herself from chuckling. He wasn't wrong after all. Gods, how was it possible that he kept exhausting her so completely?
"Yeah, well, it still wasn't what I had planned," she complained, taking a sip from the hot chocolate when Xaden handed it to her. Mmh, it really tasted delicious. "I'd meant to…to tell you something."
Xaden pursed his lips, humour gleaming dangerously in his eyes. "Okay, but I'm not sure how you meant to do that with my cock down your throat. Guess that plan wasn't so well-thought-th— Okay, okay, I'll leave it be," he back-paddled at her glare, snickering, and after only a second or two, Violet chimed in on his laughter.
"You're unbelievable," she chuckled after they'd calmed down again, her chest bursting with emotions as she smiled at him. But that was just it, wasn't it? What she'd meant to tell him, even with how insane it was?
Taking a deep breath to try and calm her nerves, she took the cup from his hands and placed it back onto the table along with her own. Then, with slow deliberate motions, she crawled over into his lap, her arms comfortably around his neck.
"Hmm, I like where this is going," he murmured, his hands loosely resting on her hips.
But Violet just shook her head, gently, her gaze holding his captive. Or was it the other way around? Did it even matter?
"Xaden," she breathed, feeling her heart beat in her throat. She swallowed, wetting her lips with her tongue. Stupidly playing for time, when stalling wouldn’t make this any easier. "What I wanted to tell you was… Well, it might be a bit insane, we just met. But…but I think…I think I'm in love with you."
Xaden had grown entirely still, all teasing and humour gone. "You think?" he murmured, eyes wide, pleading. "Or you know?"
Violet's breath hitched. "I know. It makes no sense, but I'm so wildly in love with you that—"
Xaden leaned up and kissed her. Violet whimpered against his lips, then her eyes fluttered shut and she all but melted into his touch as his hand rose to cup her cheek. It didn't last long, just long enough for her breath to slowly flow out of her. Just enough to wash away every trace of fear or doubt.
"I don't care whether it makes sense or not," he whispered into the small space between them, his forehead resting against her own. "Because I love you, too."
. o O o .
"Xa-Xaden," she mewled, her vision shifting out of focus. "Xaden, please."
Xaden hummed against her skin where he was leaving a trail of licks and wet kisses on her breast. "Is there something you want?"
Violet keened, jerking when he crooked his fingers inside her, just enough to let them brush against her g-spot. "I…I want…I want to come," she gasped, giggling, her entire body growing tense when he did it again, just enough to tease her but not giving her what she truly needed. "Please!"
With a low rumbling groan, his mouth closed around her nipple and he sucked, lightly, drawing a needy little cry from her. Fuck, why were her breasts so sensitive to his touch? How did he do that?
"Mmh, I like it when you beg," he murmured, rasping his teeth over her pebbled peaks. "What wouldn't you do right now so I make you come, hmm?"
Violet laughed, the sound trailing into a whimper, her back arching as he again moved his fingers inside her, with more pressure this time, more purpose, yet still not enough. Fuck his dirty mouth and clever fingers. They would be her undoing.
"Anything," she moaned, clutching at his back, mindful of his tattoos there. "I'd do anything. Just…just— ah, fuck!"
She cried out when he massaged that spot with laser-like precision but then pulled back before she could reach completion. "Anything, huh?" he murmured, clearly enjoying their little game just as much as she did. "Does that mean you'll take whatever I want to give you?"
Frantically, Violet nodded. "Yes! Yes, anything. Just please, Xaden. Please!"
A shudder ran down Xaden's back and he groaned. "Fuck, yes, Violence. Take it. Take it all." His wrist and fingers stiffened, and he drove into her without holding back, with harsh precise movements that had Violet screaming within seconds.
"Fuck," she sighed as she slowly floated back down, sure that, if he hadn't been holding her, she would simply be melting into a puddle of bliss. "How do you keep doing that?"
Laughing quietly, Xaden pulled her into a soothing embrace, his lips trailing soft kisses over her forehead. "Told you I used to help Garrick with his studies," he hummed. "It's amazing what difference a tiny bit of anatomical knowledge can make." He winked.
Chuckling, Violet shook her head. "Yeah, I'm sure that's the whole secret." Without really planning to, she burrowed closer against his chest, breathing him in. She absolutely needed to borrow one of his shirts to sleep in tonight.
"So, what's the plan for today?" she murmured after a few minutes of comfortable cuddling. Tonight, she had to return home; she had work tomorrow morning. But until then, she wanted to spend her time with him as best as she could. "More hiking?"
Xaden pursed his lips. "We could do that, if you want. There are still lots of trails you haven't seen yet. But I'd say we better get dressed and decent again so we can go for a little shopping trip before I bring you home."
"A shopping trip?" Violet frowned. "Why?"
Xaden smirked. "For your gown, of course."
"What?" Violet pushed herself up to throw him a bewildered look. "I'm not going dress shopping with you."
"Oh, but you just promised," he replied, his eyes blazing with a mischievous gleam. "You'd do anything, you said. Would take whatever I want to give you. Well, I want to give you a gown for the gala, and everything else you'll need there."
Violet could only gape at him. "No!" she eventually exclaimed. "No, I don't want you to pay for my dress. Really, that's not necessary, I have it covered."
A little line was forming between Xaden's eyes as he threw her a measuring look. "Violet," he began, but she cut him off with a quick shake of her head.
"No, Xaden. Please. I…I don't want you to pay from my dress. Okay?"
Xaden regarded her with a strange expression, his lips tugged between his teeth, but eventually, he nodded. "Okay. If you don't want that, I won't do it. But…can you explain to me why you're so against that idea?"
Violet slid off the big bed and made a few steps up and down the room, grateful that her legs didn't give in after…just everything earlier. "I just…" She trailed off, trying to find the right words. "I don't want you to give me expensive gifts. If you do, I feel like…I don't know. Like I'm one of those girls, who only seeks to have a rich boyfriend because of his money."
Xaden raised an eyebrow at her, his arms crossed in front of his chest. "But we both know that's not the case."
"Of course not." Violet threw up her hands.
"Besides, it's not like I'm paying for everything," Xaden continued. "I mean, you invited me to the cinema the other day. And paid for half of the picnic snacks."
"Yes." She gave a small sigh. "I at least want to try and have us on equal footing." Even though she knew how completely pointless that was. The fact alone that they were here, in this beautiful mountain lodge that he owned was more than she could ever hope to offer in return.
"Okay, then…let's pretend I didn't have as much money as I do. Would you accept gifts then? If, I don't know. I wanted to give you flowers? Or invite you to ice cream at the park? Maybe get a silly little trinket for you because it reminded me of you. Would that be okay?"
Violet shrugged. "I guess so?"
"Because those aren't too expensive?"
"Yes," she sighed. "These things aren't a big deal, don't really make a dent in any income. Just little somethings every now and then."
With a slight frown, Xaden scooted to the edge of the bed as well. "Okay, but…paying for your outfit wouldn't make a dent in my income, either," he pointed out carefully. "So why is that different?"
Somewhere deep down, Violet knew that she was in the process of losing this argument, and she couldn't even tell where she'd taken the wrong turn. But still…couldn't he see that was something else?
"Because…because they'd make a difference in my income. I don't want you to simply give me things that would be completely out of what I could afford for myself."
"Like the gown for the anniversary gala?"
"Yes! Uh, no?" Shit. What was her point again?
With a drawn-out sigh, Xaden stood and walked over to her, gently placing his hands on her waist. "Look, I get it," he said, voice so much calmer than she felt. "You're an independent woman. You care for yourself. You have your life the way you shaped it, the way you made it. And I respect that."
"And yet you want to throw money at me," Violet muttered meekly.
But Xaden shook his head. "I'm not going to offer to pay your rent for you," he said. "I'm not going to set up a monthly transfer so you can buy more high-quality food or clothes for yourself. I'm not even going to give you a new car for your birthday." He grinned but quickly turned serious again. "Because I get it. I'd like to be a part of your life, yes, but not to take over, take it away from your own hands."
If Violet hadn't already been in love with him, she surely would have fallen for him then and there. She placed her hand on his chest and stepped closer, his hands sliding around her to a full embrace. "Thank you," she said, more heartfelt than he might ever know. "I really appreciate that. But…" a small frown tugged at her features. "But why are you so insistent about the dress, then?"
Xaden sighed, his large hands rubbing slow circles against her back. "Because that is not part of your life," he finally said. "If it weren't for me, you wouldn't even need to buy a dress, one that, as you just admitted, will put a heavy dent into your income. And that's why I want to pay for it. Not because I don't think you could, but because you shouldn't have to just because I'm too egotistical to leave you out of that whole mess."
Violet looked at him for a long while, contemplating. He had a point there, that much she could admit. "So it's not because you're afraid I'd pick something unsuitable for that high-profile event?" she eventually teased, cocking her head with a sly smirk on her lips.
Xaden laughed, low and deep. "Love, you could be wearing dish rags or even a garbage bag for all I'd care and still be the most beautiful person in the entire city hall." His eyes blazed with so much love that it brought a blush to her cheeks.
"That would be quite the scandal though, wouldn't it?"
Xaden shrugged. "I wouldn't care. Not about something trivial like that. Not as long as I have you with me. Because I'm too fucking greedy when it comes to you."
Violet’s smile turned a little puzzled. "What do you mean by that?
"I mean that the prudent thing to do, the smart thing, would be to keep you far away from that viper's nest. All those pretentious assholes who've never done a single thing of value in their lives and yet sneer at everyone they deem beneath them." Xaden grimaced, his arms growing tighter around her. "I don't want them within a ten-mile-radius from you, and if you were smart, you'd refuse to come at all. You can still do that, you know? At any point."
He paused, as if waiting for her to use this chance. As if she ever would.
"But yeah," he went on with a small sigh. "I'm also too fucking greedy to be smart. I want to be near you, to be around you whenever I can. And I want to scream it out into the world. That you found me, that I'm yours." He brought one hand to her face, caressing her cheek with the back of his fingers.
"And I want to come with you," she breathed. Because he'd chosen her and was not afraid to show it. He'd never know how much that meant to her.
"Guess we're both fools then," he murmured and leaned in to brush a light kiss onto her brow.
Violet let out a sigh, smiling. "Okay," she said, pulling back to look up at him again. "How about a compromise? About the dress," she added at his raised eyebrow. "I'll let you pay for it. But you'll let me pitch in some of the money. Oh, and you're not buying any jewellery! I have a few pretty sets I can use, that should be enough."
Xaden looked at her, with his lips tugged between his teeth and a twinkle in his eyes. "Okay, deal."
. o O o .
With a deep sigh, Violet stretched her arms over her head, her back arching, before she made herself comfortable on the sofa in her and Rhiannon's living room again. Even though a whole day had passed since Xaden had dropped her off here after their mini vacation, her muscles were still sore from all the activity. And the hiking had been the least of it.
A soft smile spread across her face as she mentally relived the highlights of those two days, her heart once again throbbing with everything she felt for Xaden, all the little things he did to make her happy. How she wished, hoped, it would stay like this. Because she could see it, clear in her head. A whole future with him.
Throwing a glance at her phone— still no sign of Rhiannon calling her from their camp— Violet decided to prepare another cup of tea for herself. Even though she was still thrilled, thinking about going to the anniversary gala— about possibly running into Halden— also gave her a queasy sensation in her stomach, and the tea helped wonderfully in calming it down.
Although, she might have to raid Rhiannon's stash for some cocoa, because a hot chocolate also sounded tempting.
The water in the electric kettle was just beginning to boil when her phone finally rang. With a happy grin, she accepted the call from an unknown number, immediately setting it to speaker mode.
"Hello?" she gasped, eager to hear Rhiannon's voice.
"Violet! Oh, thank Amari. It's finally working. I swear, anything technical is a whole adventure on its own out here." Rhiannon laughed, and Violet sighed at hearing her voice. It hadn't even been long, but she still missed her friend.
"Well, you did mean to go on an adventure tour, didn't you?" Violet teased, reaching for the box with the tea bags. Once she was through with these, she'd have to invest in some higher quality loose tea of this flavour. "How is it?"
Rhiannon laughed again, even more heartfelt this time. "Oh, it's fantastic. All of it. You should see it, Vi, the rainforest is…well, it's something else entirely. There's just…just so much life everywhere, you know? So many plants all on top of each other, so many different animals. And you just know that you notice barely a fraction of what's really there. It's amazing."
Violet smiled at Rhi's enthusiasm, pouring hot water over the tea bag into her big mug and setting a timer. "Sounds like it's exactly what you were hoping for. And how about the sleeping arrangements? Are they as…interesting as you imagined?"
At that, Rhi groaned, but Violet could still hear the smile on her lips. "Well, interesting covers it well, I'd say. The two things you'll not find here are privacy and any form of modern luxury. But…well, all in all, it's not as bad as I'd feared. You get used to it."
"That's good then. And how's Tara?"
"Beyond happy to meet her old friends at the camp again. They're lovely people."
"That's good to hear." Violet smiled. "Sounds like you're in for a good time, then."
Rhiannon hummed. "Yeah. But talking about good times, how have you been? How did your days at Riorson's love nest go?"
Snorting, Violet shook her head. "It's not a love nest," she said with a roll of her eyes. "I mean, it kind of was now, for us, but there are also steady rooms for Liam and all their friends. So calling it a love nest is a bit awkward."
"And you are skirting the question. How was it?"
"Well, it was…" Violet let out a deep sigh. "It was absolutely fantastic, Rhi," she swooned. "Better than all I could have hoped for."
Rhi chuckled. "Don't tell me you two were fucking for more than two days straight," she teased. "I doubt that'd be healthy."
"No, of course not." Violet rolled her eyes— even though Rhi wasn't that far off. They'd fucked a sheer ridiculous amount of times. "I mean, sure, we fucked…a lot. But it was also so much more amazing for the times where we didn't. Where we just…talked and joked and cuddled. We were cooking together, went on two little hiking tours, and just… It was just…perfect."
Rhi hummed, in a way that was difficult for Violet to interpret over the phone. "What?"
Rhiannon took a moment before she answered, time Violet used to steep the tea bag a bit more. "I'm just…" She let out a sigh. "I'm just really happy for you, Vi," she eventually admitted. "The way you talk and everything? I can tell that he really makes you happy. And I know it's early, too early to make meaningful comparisons. But I'm pretty sure you were never this happy with Halden, not even in the beginning. And I know it was always different with how he basically had to keep you a secret or whatever. But the difference is still striking to me. So yeah. As much as I hate to admit it, it seems like Riorson really is a good man."
Violet grimaced. Rhiannon didn't even know half of her so-called relationship with Halden. But then, neither had she herself, as it had turned out.
But none of that mattered anymore.
"Yeah, there's really no point in comparing them," Violet replied, surprisingly lighthearted. The oven clock beeped and she pulled the tea bag out of the water. "Xaden is simply completely different from Halden."
"Yeah, I guess he is. But speaking of Xaden and Halden, have you told him?"
Violet flinched. Shit. "Erm, no. Not yet. I meant to, but…I really didn't want to ruin the mood." And airing out even just a few details about her ex surely would have tainted the lovely memories she and Xaden had made.
"Vi…" Rhiannon reprimanded, but Violet interrupted her directly.
"I know! You don't have to say it. And I will tell him, I promise. I just need to find the right moment to bring it up."
"Yeah," Rhi dead-panned. "Because those words have never led to any disaster ever." She sighed. "But whatever. It's not as if I can make you do anything from over here. Something else though. Did you get a dress by now?"
At that, Violet's cheeks flared with warmth. "Yeah, I have one."
"And?" Violet could practically hear Rhiannon's smirk. "Did you pay for it yourself?"
Violet let out a slow breath. "No, I didn't."
"Ha!" Rhi cackled. "I knew it. Tell me aaaaall about it."
Shaking her head, Violet chuckled. Reaching for her mug, she blew onto the steaming surface, sighing at the scent wafting up, and carried it over to the low table by the sofa. "Okay, so he eventually convinced me that him paying for this dress wouldn't be the end of the world. And then, he took me to Luminance du Soleil."
Rhiannon let out a whistle. "Okay, wow. I mean, I probably shouldn't be surprised he picked the most exclusive boutique of the entire country. But still. Wow!"
Violet let out a weak laugh. "Yeah, that about sums it up. It helps though that he's apparently friends with the owner, and she agreed to make the alterations for my dress the highest priority so it would be done in time."
And it also helped that, clearly, the famous Soleil Telery was one of the few that openly condemned what Cat had done to Xaden, because from what Violet had read between the lines of their conversation, a certain Catriona Cordella was banned from Luminance du Soleil. She could only imagine what that would mean for a member of high society.
"Well, that…makes it slightly more bearable, I guess," Rhi mused. "But tell me, what kind of dress did you pick? Or rather, what dress did Soleil pick for you? She's rather famous for being a bit eccentric there."
"Yeah, tell me about it," Violet snorted, remembering how the woman with her brown hair in an elegant knot and a nose ring of all things had circled her with that evaluating look. "But I have to give her that much, she picked an absolutely stunning gown for me." Her lips tugged into a smile. "The prettiest fabric you can imagine, black but with gleaming threads in teal woven into it. So depending on how the light hits it, it shimmers either blue or green."
"To match your eyes," Rhiannon guessed.
"Yeah. And then, it reaches all the way down to the floor, of course, flowing beautifully, with a slit all the way up to my thigh on one side. And the top is… I can't really explain how it looks. Not exactly a standard model."
"Yeah, well, it's a Soleil's. 'Standard' is not what you should expect there."
"True." A smile played around Violet's lips, and she took a tiny sip of her tea, humming at how it instantly soothed her nerves. In hindsight, her insisting on paying herself for a dress for the gala had been a bit silly. She could never have afforded something even remotely as beautiful as that gown.
"And what about the rest?" Rhi went on. "Shoes? Accessories? Oh, did he also buy you jewellery?"
"No!" Violet exclaimed, feeling a tiny bit triumphant. "Well, he did pay for a pair of high-heeled torture devices that go perfectly with the dress." Which were incredibly comfortable to wear, if she was honest. "But I managed to pay for the matching clutch myself." At least there was that. "And he didn't even try to drag me to Mason's for any jewellery afterwards when I said I have a set in that colour myself."
"Uh huh…" Rhiannon made, not sounding convinced. Then she sighed. "Bah, I wish I could be there and see it. But you'll take pictures, right? Ah, forget that. There will be enough photographers to do that."
She paused, someone shouting something in the background. "Ah, shit. My time is nearly up," she then said. "So I'll see you in ten days, okay? Don't do anything stupid until then. Tell him!"
"I will, I will," Violet promised. "Don't worry. And you enjoy your trip. Tell Tara I said hi."
"Will do." Rhi sighed, then cursed. "Oh, fuck, I forgot. Did you get your period by now?"
Well, there went Violet's hope that Rhi had forgotten about that…
"No, I didn't," she groaned. "But don't get started about taking a test again, I won't—"
"Violet Sorrengail, don't be stup—" Rhiannon shouted at the same time, but then the line went dead.
Grimacing, Violet put her phone to the side and pulled her knees up against her chest, her hands clutching her mug of tea for comfort. Because as much as she'd enjoyed talking to Rhi, Violet wished the call had ended a minute earlier.
Because Rhi didn't get it. She couldn't be pregnant. The fact aside that it objectively simply wasn't a realistic option, she just…she just couldn't be. Not now. Not when things with Xaden were going so well. It would be the worst of cosmic jokes if she were pregnant now because of that broken condom when he'd just got rid of that unhinged ex of his.
And while she probably could just take a test to prove Rhiannon wrong and be done with it…Taking a test meant having at least some hope that the result could be anything but ‘negative’. And conjuring up that spark of hope only to watch it sputter and die, smothered by reality… That simply wasn't something she could endure. Not again. It was bad enough that Rhi's words had been enough to cause her to imagine stupid phantom symptoms. She wouldn't subject herself to even more pain.
Besides, it was just a question of time, anyways. Tomorrow or maybe the day after, her period was going to set in. Then she could despair a bit about old broken hopes again before burying those feelings back in the depth of her heart.
This was not the time to wallow in the past. Not when she was looking forward to a future with Xaden.

FROM THE SIDELINES x suffocatingspring
I WANNA PREFACE THIS BY SAYING IM OPEN TO OPINIONS BUT NOT STRAIGHT UP HATE OR NASTINESS!
so i am a LATE fan to the mha fandom, i heard of the anime in like ? 2020 but i actually didn’t start watching anime myself until 2023 LOL. anyways- i think started watching the anime in like june/july of 2024? so i watched the last few episodes of season 7 as they aired. i immediately jumped into the fandom bc i needed MORE so i did what every sane person does and i watched edits, followed fan pages & YES i flew to ao3 bc i am not a stranger to fanfiction lol. the first mha fanfic i read was actually called In Medias Res by whileyouresleeping- (i adore this fic so much! its bkdk as an established relationship but turns into a bkdktd fic and it’s so beautifully written!) so the more i got into the fandom i saw a repeating trend with from the sidelines.. some ppl hated it, others loved it, it was talked about as THE bkdk fanfic so i was like ok i’ll give it a whirl, what the worst that could happen? RIP. so yeah i read ten fic late November (bc i remember reading at the dinner table during thanksgiving lol) and ha. this fic uprooted my fucking life. so here’s what i need to get off my chest before i scream:
1. i’ve been reading fanfiction since i was maybe 11 years old and yes i read sex scenes and YES i read MM or FF sex scenes. bro i promise the ppl who are mad about a FAN WRITTEN piece of literature featuring high schoolers based of FICTIONAL characters need to relax. the fic is tagged as smut so really what the hell else is the author supposed to do to “protect” readers? like bro just don’t read it if you don’t like what’s in the tags ??? the hate the author gets is soooo unnecessary like yeah i get it they are in high school in the fic but um.. real life high schoolers have sex i’m sorry to tell yall
2. SHE (the author) WAS LIKE 16 WHEN SHE WROTE THAT!!?!?!?!? 404k WORDS?!?!? ARE YALL MISSING THAT!?!? I CANT WRAP MY HEAD AROUNF THAT!!!!! its so beautifully written like seriously, for a CHILD to write something so well written that’s mind blowing. she is so underrated as a writer. you can SEE THE SCENES so clearly, i FELT the emotions, that angst tag nearly killed me cause OOOOOOO there was times i had to sit my phone down and walk around because i felt physically ill LMAO (sry i’m dramatic but yes it did happen) so like yeah the hatred the author gets is the worst, bc her work was an actual masterpiece
3. the outfits: …. ok ok were they cringe? yes. did i hate them so much that i wouldn’t recommend the fic because of it? girl no. and if i’m being 100% honest…. when i read the outfits i literally just made up my own shit in my head… idk what most ppl do when they read something like that but the outfit choice was such a minor detail like i just changed it in my head and continues reading with the characters in the outfits i imagined myself ? i read “blue tights and white oversized sweater” for the scene at the party i think? and i remember thinking yeah that’s not bad…. but what if he wore tight dark wash skinny jeans and a cropped sweater with a collar instead? and boom i continued happily reading with that outfit in my head :D same with the …. slip dress .. yeah idk i get the idea she was going for but in my head i just made him wear a mesh top with micro shorts and kept it pushing. the outfits weren’t that big of a deal and i think some ppl might not be capable of making their own reality when reading or maybe the lil images they have in their head are already tied to something negative? but for it to be such a big deal amongst fts haters i really just wanted to tell them they hated it because they can’t read LOL
4. the fucking soundtrack: yo. i haven’t read a fic that had a soundtrack SOOOO PERFECTLY MATCHED oh my gosh i’ve changed as a person bc now when i read a car scene/ dancing scene/ adventure scene/ ANYTHING all i can think is “damn what the music? what’s the vibes? FUCK.” like fts spoileddddd meeee UGHFJFJFJJG. NOT TO MENTION!!!!!! my dad grew up in the 80s so nearly all of those songs i knew previously because i had heard them growing up! ANNDDDDD i had two of the songs (take my breath away and nothings gonna change my love for you) on my FUCKING WEDDING PLAYLIST!!!!!! BEFORE I WAS EVEN A MHA FAN!!!!!!! NOW. HOW AM I GONNA DANCE AT MY WEDDING TO TAKE MY BREATH AWAY WITHOUT SOBBING BC OF BKDK !!!! HELLLPPP!!!!! but no seriously THAT SCENE bruh… nothing at my wedding would be that romantic i’ve accepted it lmaoooo. but yes i made my own fts playlist plus added some other 80s love songs and i listen to it DAILY. since nov 2024 ive been listening to every breath you take and happily fueling my delusions. i hear a whisp of 80s music in the grocery store and start hallucinating. AND I DON’T CARE!!!!! the playlist amplified the whole experience 100 fold and the contrast between katsuki’s character and the music choice just itched my brain TEW GOOD.
5. the height difference: ….. some of y’all TOO strict omggggg like bffr…. of all the things to get your underwear in a wad over ??? bye i can’t take y’all seriously
6. the smut scenes: LISTEN. i used to read larry fanfiction ok and when i say nothing has surprised me since…. so i mean it when i say that from the bottom of my heart that the fts scenes were TASTEFULLY WRITTEN AND JUST PLAIN GOOD?? unrealistic? maybe. but THATS WHAT THE PPL WANT!!!!! WHY WRITE A FIC WITH ACCURATE ANATOMY AND REALISTIC SEX SCENES WHEN YOU CAN WRITE A MASTERPIECE!!!!!!! like the quote: “we can run through the whole pack” AYOOO??!!? I SCREAMMEDDDD!!!!!! a man’s refractory period between sex is quite long (in my own personal experience) so that sentence had my head fuzzy & skin hot … AND IT WAS THE FIRST SCENE!!!! and i loved that the scenes were mostly vanilla (vanilla as in missionary & no heavy bdsm or other dynamics) it was passionate, RAW, and just so tender… and YES even the whole “pretend to make love” uuuUYGGHHHHGDHFHFH ARE YOU KIDDING!!!!! i ate that shit up bc that boy was NOT PRETENFING !!!! DONT YALL GET IT !????! FUCKKKKKKK!!!!! jeez it was all so very perfect, call me the #1 fts glazer IDC IDC IDC
7. I DID NOT READ THE ALTERNATE ENDING!!!!!! I CHOOSE PEACE!!!!! DONT SHARE A THING!!!!!!!!
8. i wish with all my heart, soul and essence that the author would release some fts one shots. i cry. like FUCK!!! i want to know how THIS relationship looks on like…. graduation day! or maybe one day katsuki gets an injury & izuku babies him back to health and katsuki pretends to hate it even tho he secretly loves it. i need a fts one shot of these two fucks buying an apartment together. a one shot of the day izuku moves out of his moms house. LIKE GUYS!!!!!! COULD YOU IMAGINE A FTS ONE SHOT OF BKDK PROPOSING????? PLEASE SOMEONE CRY WITH ME.
9. CAN SOMEONE PLLEASSEEEEEE DRAW MORE FTS FAN ART???? FUCK. IF I GOTTA LEARN TO DRAW AND DO IT MYSELF I WILL DAMN.
oKAY IM DONE
sorry that was long and annoying but you don’t understand i’ve been going fucking insane since i finished this fic and i have no one to talk to about it and all the comments i see online are like totally fucking rude and negative!!!! idc if you call me a meat rider the fic was overall fucking amazing and i really think most of the hate is forced. like even if you thought it was out of character, the writing/story itself was monumentally better than most books i’ve read in my life. i just love from the sidelines so much and ive shed REAL TEARS over this fic i just !!!!! i’m past saving at this point.
BUT! if anyone agrees with anything i said or wants to share their thoughts id love someone to fangirl with!!! lemme know your fav quotes! or your favorite scene! lemme know your fic recommendations! and PLEASE lemme know your post fts coping mechanisms!!! :333

KittyBella AU: Chloe and Zoe
Listen people---I love Chloe and Zoe both on their own merits separate from each other, and I love them both as a pair. In any more canon-close Miraculous discussion, I will ALWAYS push for the two of them to share the bee and to be GOOD FREAKING SISTERS as much as I can without drawing the story too much away from the main characters.
I know the writers room really just created Zoe to be a replacement for Chloe so they could fully commit to making Chloe """"evil"""" and """"irredeemable"""" and that her presence tends to mark the bad writing because it signals both their obsession with making Chloe bad and their obsession with making Zoe both the main character (despite so many other side characters deserving more attention) and completely uncomplicatedly good (even though she is NOT girlie has so many issues it's why I LIKE HER YOU GUYS). But I don't care because Miraculous is nothing if not a GOLD MINE of potential. And fellas. I am about to Get Rich Quick.
In KittyBella, Zoe IS the main character, Chloe is going to be deeply important to her story, and I am going to go HOGWILD on giving Chloe a redemption arc and giving the girlies a really close relationship. Because this is fanfiction and I am self-indulgent and I CAN! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!
Even in canon, Chloe loves her sister:
Uh oh, we have section headers, that's how you KNOW I got carried away.
When Zoe is first introduced, it's after the writers have decided to send Chloe on a nosedive off the deep end and Chloe is STILL very nice to her sister by Chloe standards. She immediately looks at Zoe and in Chloe-speak goes "You're pretty, and probably a little clueless, let me mentor you and make sure you have someone helping you on your side."
In Sole Crusher, Chloe spends the episode teaching Zoe everything she's learned about how to imitate Audrey and threatening not to accept her if she doesn't walk all over people. It gets Zoe akumatized, since she came here to ESCAPE all the mean-girl posturing, and then a little speech from Marinette---a girl she has said about 5 sentences to---convinces her that she'll be accepted.
While there are some things from the Sole Crusher setup we can take, I really dislike a lot of the writing decisions (mainly around how Zoe is just so ready to believe Marinette that makes no sense, even if she DOES have a crush). So I'll be making some changes.
Major Changes:
This is season one Chloe, not retcon plainly evil Chloe.
Season one Chloe absolutely adores her not-girlfriend Sabrina and her BFF Adrien even though they notably DON'T "walk all over other people," and is quite happy to do the walking for them. She gets waspish when they try to stop her from being a bully, but she doesn't really have issues with the fact that Sabrina is too meek to lead the mean-girl charge or that Adrien is a polite sunshine child. She just wishes he wouldn't spend so much time with people she considers beneath him.
Sabrina clearly does have the capacity to be mean and even seems to enjoy it sometimes: she's happy to help kick Mari and Alya out of their seats in Origins. But Chloe never feels the need to direct her to be cruel, she just wants assistance in her own cruelty. I definitely think we're taking a similar approach with Zoe. Chloe doesn't need to force her to humiliate Marinette, she just expects Zoe to be on board when Chloe is humiliating her, and to support her opinions of "lesser" people.
Speaking of Adrien and Sabrina, they're definitely going to factor into all of this. Because in season one, Sabrina and Chloe are much more equals and Adrien is quick to make excuses for her behavior. And here we reach the first change to Origins:
Adrien isn't a homeschooler.
I think it would be a bit much to have to juggle Zoe and Adrien bith majorly uprooting their lives and having Chloe being their only guide to the new world on the same day. So I've altered the setup a bit. First of all, all of the characters are aged up to be starting the U.S. equivalent of 10th grade, which, in France, is the start of high school, so the whole class is having a social shift. (I used to assume this was canon thanks to Sabrina's "New Year, New School, New Seats" line in Origins, but that's since been retconned. I don't care though, we're keeping it).
A lot of them used to go to the same middle school, but a lot of them didn't. Specifically: Nino, Marinette, Kim, Alix, Rose, Juleka, and Chloe all went to the same middle school. Sabrina and Chloe have been friends forever, but she actually went to a larger middle school with Max, Ivan, Mylene, and Nathaniel, which made any cheating they did easier to pull off. Alya is a transplant, and her parents did deliberately wait to move on the school year so the transition wouldn't be as jarring. She's been in Paris for about a month by the time the show starts.
Adrien used to go to a much smaller private middle school with a bunch of other child models and actors and such (think XY and Clara Nightingale, but they're both older than the Miracuclass). He was all set to get funneled into the same high school as his peers, but due to the recent "disappearance" of Emilie, Chloe convinced Gabe it would be better if he went to school with her and Sabrina (something he's wanted for a long time but it's so far been a bit fruitless). This is also where Aurore and Mirielle go to school.
This creates an environment where Adrien still has a pretty skewed social experience and is fairly sheltered, but he's not completely upending his life the way Zoe is, which allows more focus on her. For consistency's sake, we'll say Zoe was also going to a 7-9 or 6-9 junior high back in NYC (which wouldn't actually be super unusual, NYC schools are weird).
Anyway, point is, Chloe fully adopts Zoe and drags her into her friend group with Adrien and Sabrina. Unlike in canon though, she doesn't really expect Zoe to "walk all over people" or be actively cruel, she just expects her to only associate with people Chloe deems acceptable and to acknowledge everybody else as beneath them.
Think Regina George. There will be times when Zoe is expected to be mean, but not any more than the Plastics expect Cady to be mean. Actually, the Plastics are a stupendous analogy for the internal dynamics of Chloe, Sabrina, and Adrien: Bossy dramatic mean girl who's so stylish and cool and influential that everyone likes her anyways; super smart girl who's more cute than hot who probably has an unrequited crush on her bestie and does absolutely everything said bestie tells her to even when bestie is mean to her; and then a super sweet but dense as bricks and insanely hot person who happens to have friends with a nasty side that they aren't really conciously aware of.
(If I were to extend the mean-girls metaphor, Marinette is Janice and then Nino is probably the equivalent Damien, although I read him and Alya as bi not gay. Zoe and Chloe have very different types, so idk who Aaron is. Pollen maybe, but not in KittyBella. Doesn't really matter).
Anywhoodle, this puts Zoe in a really rough spot because, without even trying, Chloe is giving her absolutely everything she wanted: a family member who deeply cares about her and chases the wolves away and takes Zoe under her wing and offers constant affection and companionship. But it all comes at a price, because Zoe still can't be authentically herself. She's suffering the same problem she was suffering in NYC. She can only be interested in things Chloe deems appropriate (which, by extension, are things Audrey/Andre find appropriate). She can only have friends that Chloe thinks are exceptional enough. She can't speak up when Chloe is being unkind or going overboard.
And I find this dynamic FASCINATING, because Zoe is simultaneously getting her heart's desire at the cost of having to relive her worst fears. She came to Paris to get AWAY from all this and now it's happening again, but it's just different enough that she doesn't catch it early (Zoe isn't a great people-reader). She tried to run away, and critically, unlike in canon, it DID NOT WORK. Zoe DOESN'T easily stand up to people. She is NOT that confident in herself, and she DOES NOT trust that people will like her for her own merits (major major difference between her and Alya: Alya is who Zoe WISHES she could be).
Chloe is the only person Zoe is POSITIVE will not abandon her, because, if nothing else, Chloe is at least incredibly clear and direct about her wants and needs, and Zoe just has to do what she says.
Chloe is Not Like Other Mean Girls:
Speaking of it being kind of different, now seems like a good spot to talk about what I think the nature of Zoe's past mean-girl drama is, since it will affect how she breaks out of this problem and deals with Chloe going forward. Disclaimer that I haven't seen season 6 (I'm probably gonna wait until it's mostly all out), but if people would like to share tidbits from it, I'm happy to try to work it into my headcanons.
So to start, I think elementary school Zoe was bullied quite a lot. I've talked on this in a previous KittyBella post, but I headcanon Zoe as a deeply strange child who was mostly socialized around only mildly caring adults and has a lot of strange interests and behaviors that she hadn't learned to tone down. It made her an outcast when she went to elementary school, and the bullying ranged from deliberate exclusion of the group weirdo to teasing her whenever she acted odd to some of the more malicious kids (who saw her as an acceptable target since nobody really liked her) doing things like stealing her stuff or defacing her property.
Zoe learned to hide and mask her strange behaviors until she was the ridiculously sweet very bland individual we meet in canon. When she started going to boarding school in junior high, a lot of her peers were attracted to her because, even amongst them, she was pretty dang rich and her mom was very influential. Zoe, who was terrified of becoming a target of bullying again, was willing to do whatever they said to stay in their good graces.
And staying in their good graces meant doing a lot of things Zoe hated. For one, her "friends" were not ones to protect her from any bullying or hatred. Anytime Zoe did something weird, they were usually the first ones to jeer at and taunt her. If Zoe was being harassed by another person, they'd join in. For another, they all expected Zoe to do the same: be very cruel to others because it was "funny" or because "they deserve it" even though most of the time the recipients of the cruelty were just like Zoe was in elementary school. They made it clear that if Zoe wasn't constantly doing favors for them and following what they said to the letter, she'd be ousted from the friend group. Anything Zoe was interested in tended to get staunchly ignored and ridiculed, and she was instead stuck doing whatever her "friends" wanted.
All this taught Zoe to see friendships as transactional, where she constantly had to be giving in and doing what everyone else wanted, and in exchange, they wouldn't be cruel to her.
Now all this is DEEPLY different from how I'm writing Chloe. She's a very different flavor of jerk than Zoe is used to operating with.
For one, you diss Chloe's friends and you're *finished.* If you say something mean to Sabrina or Adrien or even Felix, she will end you. She will pull out every embarassing thing she's ever learned about you and mock you in front of everyone, and then she'll get you punished by the teachers and the principals too (or your boss or the law enforcement or whoever Chloe can convince to do it quickest). Only Chloe is allowed to tease them because she does it with love and for their own improvement.
For another, Chloe actually does respect her friends and their opinions, even when she LOUDLY disagrees. She thinks Sabrina could dress much hotter and more fashionably, but she recognizes that Sabrina feels most comfortable in a cute sweater vest, regardless of how out-of-style it may be. And so, Chloe will make sure Sabrina has access to the BEST damn sweater vest ever. Adrien wants to associate with losers? Alright, he's an idiot and she expects him to prioritize her over them every time, but she'll try to be less awful to Adrien's losers specifically.
Like. There are certainly limits to this. She's not letting Sabrina dress like a 70s secretary (which may be more what Sabrina wants to dress like), and she's not suddenly treating Adrien's other friends like equals. But she does care for her friends and will help them do things she finds stupid just because it makes them happy.
When her friends have interests, she might find them Ridiculous (utterly ridiculous) and will refuse to participate, but unless she wants them to be doing something with her right then, she won't *stop* them. Does she understand why Sabrina is a nerd who likes reading so much? No. Will she ever participate in a read-a-thon with Sabrina? No. Will she expect Sabrina to put the book down if Chloe wants to take her on an expedition or needs help with homework? Yes. But if she walks in on Sabrina reading for fun, she's not going to ridicule her, she recognizes this is Just A Sabrina Thing that she doesn't quite get.
Basically, while Chloe is bluntly rude, self-absorbed, and thinks she's better than everyone, she is actually fun to be around and does actually like her friends (in contrast to Zoe's middle-school "friends" who would sell each other for a singular corn chip). But Zoe doesn't fully understand this about Chloe. She just thinks "For some unfathomable reason, my sister decided I was acceptable the first time she met me and I better not fuck that up or I lose the only person I've ever met who will protect me from cruel people around me."
This All Affects Zoe AS KITTY NOIR:
I want to write it so that Zoe is still masking who she is a LOT, and, like Adrien does in canon, uses Kitty Noir as a release for that.
As Kitty, she has fantastic superpowers to protect herself, isn't a target for anyone other than Hawkmoth, and is too busy to worry about being liked by anyone other than Scarabella really.
She also finds that for once, exaggerating her personality is more helpful than toning it down. Her flirty side helps bring some much needed levity in dangerous situations, her side that's interested in getting and giving the heebie jeebies is useful for unsettling her opponents and putting them on the back foot, and her skill monkey side is useful for skill monkey reasons that don't come up a lot in civilian life. This is something she has in common with Alya, who for once, doesn't have to be so mature and restrained and can be more excitable---and a little bitchy.
Of the duo, Scarabella is going to be the "meaner" one who always has a sassy biting comment for the reporters and an insult for the villains and won't hesitate to yell at people to GET OUT OF HER WAY. Kitty, while still a bit of a pungeon master, is more likely to compliment the villain's on their good attacks and style and to be sweet and comforting to civilians. She's mean at Chloe's behest in canon all the time, and she doesn't have to be as Kitty Noir, so she isn't.
I'm also going to put a sidebar here, since I don't have a better spot to put it: Zoe's behavior causes a lot of drama in the KittyBella lovesquare. How Alya and Zoe see each other probably deserves it's own post, but know that Alya is highly conflicted about Zoe.
Chloe's Redemption:
Anyways, as the story goes on, Chloe and Zoe's relationship is going to change.
First of all, Zoe is going to get more confident in herself and more uncomfortable with Chloe's cruelty as time goes on. But she loves Chloe and even if she wanted to, she couldn't just stop hanging out with her---they live in the same place.
Secondly, Adrien and Sabrina are also going to get more confident with time and more uncomfortable with Chloe's behavior. Adrien through hanging out with non-Chloe people, and Sabrina through watching both the new heroes of Paris and her new classmates.
I think, in order of who starts calling Chloe out first, it'll be Adrien, then Zoe, then Sabrina. Adrien starts doing it fairly early in the story and it causes a lot of tension, Zoe does it around the midway point as Chloe starts working to be a better person and encourages her along, and Sabrina begins doing it at the end, who feels more comfortable doing so after Chloe is furthest along in her redemption arc and makes it clear she DOESN'T always know when she's being mean and NEEDS to be called out.
I like the idea that Adrien hits it off with Nino really well, and so Nino drags him away from Chloe and into the greater friend group a lot, and Adrien invites Zoe and Sabrina along pretty often. As Adrien, who has never been witness to the way Chloe treats her classmates, learns more and more about how awful she is to them, he does start pushing her to change. He starts calling her out every time she does something mean and choosing his other friends over her (but only when she makes them choose).
This puts Chloe on the back foot a little bit because she does genuinely care about Adrien and doesn't want to lose him. But the other people in her life aren't exactly qualified for teaching her how to be good, so she turns to her heroic role models for help instead. Kitty jumps on the opportunity to give her sister a miraculous and she, Scarabella, and Kitty all build a really great rapport that teaches Zoe a LOT about how her sister works and encourages her to start playing an active role in the civilian sphere too.
Once they get a system worked out and resolve some of their communication issues, Sabrina, always stalwart and affectionate, gently and happily helps Chloe along.
Basically, Adrien kicks off Chloe's desire to change, Zoe (as both herself and as Kitty Noir) provides the support to make it happen, and Sabrina keeps it going even when Chloe backslides.
Zoe, Redeemed Chloe, and their Parents:
Also, a big part of Chloe getting nicer will be her realizing that her parents are supremely horrible people, and she and Zoe will bond over that because Zoe has ALREADY realized their parents are terrible, she just doesn't know how to stand up to them. Chloe's bold confidence combined with Zoe's YEARS of pent up ideas and frustration will quickly make them ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARES for their parents.
I've already made a post about some of my Zoe headcanons, and I picture Mr. Lee as a pretty redeemable guy, and I think I'm going to redeem him in KittyBella. I'm unsure about Audrey and Andre though. I'd have to majorly change how Andre is written to make him redeemable, since in the show he is almost solely responsible for Chloe's psyche being fucked on every level. If someone's got an opinion either way, I'd love to hear it. Audrey's still terrible, and I don't think I want to redeem her, but if someone would like to convince me otherwise, I'm all ears!
TL;DR
So yeah, that got long and a bit rambly, but those are my major thoughts on Chloe, her relationship with Zoe, her redemption arc, and how the Bee Sisters relationship affects both of them. If anyone has thoughts, opinions, headcanons, ideas, disagreements, or anything else to say about it please do! This WIP is still in the early stages of development and very little is set in stone here. Even if it's only vaguely KittyBella related, or even if it's Something Else Miraculous related, I'm super interested and all of it will give me things to think about when writing.
(And even if it's not miraculous related and you just wanna yap in my inbox, I love listening to and talking to people! Please just come scream at me)!
Next post will either be a LoveSquare dynamics deep-dive or cover changes to the magic system, but then I think I'm gonna try to outline Origins!

The M Saga: This Story starts at 3am
M was slowly losing it.
It was never easy trying to work through your trauma, we all know this, but it was especially hard when you couldn’t even open up to people about.
She was so familar with the way her chest would tighten, and the feeling of her heart racing in her chest. It was never less frighten, no matter how often it happened. In reality, it made it more terrifying cause she was on her own.
Sure, she could get help to calm down but she couldn’t tell anyone what triggered her. Everytime she tried, my vocal cord was stop working.
She kept getting triggered again and again, without anyway of being able to stop it from happening. She couldn’t couldn’t work through it, she couldn’t tell anyone about it.
She felt hopeless.
These moments were what cause her mind to wander to the same dark places it did when she was stuck in that rancid place.
She wanted to get better, she really did, but how could she?
Unless some magically being came and rid her of this curse or whatever had cause this, she was stuck. And it was horrifying.
She was laid on the Hermes cabin floor, wrapped in her sleeping bag.
She couldn’t sleep. Not unusual at all. She had the world’s least ideal sleeping schedule.
Her mind was always too busy to sleep. Having a million thoughts at once, going over the day, planning for tomorrow, going to older memories, good and bad alike.
It wasn’t fun, in the slightest, but she had gotten used to it by now.
She stared into space, thinking about how exactly the universe never ended. Seriously? How can something not have an end? Is it like a circle? Would you just loop around or something?
She was rudely interrupted by her thoughts, with a bright light hovering above her head.
“Jesus…” She muttered, shielding her eyes from the blinding orb.
Groans filled the cabin.
“I thought you said lights out, Travis…”
“Bro, turn that shit off, I’m trying to sleep….”
“I just fell asleep, man…”
“Why isn’t going away…”
“Cause someone just got claimed, you dipshit-”
M shot up, the orb following her. Well, looks like it was time.
She glanced up, to see a full moon hovering above her head.
She felt like crying, maybe even throwing up.
The very thing that cause her the most physical pain in her daily life, the thing that completely uprooted her life and controlled her like a puppet, was her mother’s domain.
“You’ve got be kidding me.” She deadpanned.
“Oh, shit.”
“Selene?”
“Yeah, Artemis doesn’t exactly have kids.”
“Good point. That would be a true plot twist, now.”
“Why are you treating this like a fanfiction?”
“I mean-”
More kids continued to wake up.
“Turn it off…”
“I would if I could.” She snapped.
“Jeez, what’s your problem?”
She resisited the snippy comment on the tip of her tounge. “Sorry.”
The moon started to fade, the room becoming submerged in darkness once more.
“Finally…”
M just defeated sighed, laying down again. This felt like a cruel joke.
But it wasn’t. It was just her life, shitshow and all.

I do not consent to any of my works being copied or reposted anywhere.
A Court of Song and Desolation
In the low lamplight, I was free Heaven and hell were words to me When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold, dark earth Work Song: Hozier
It's been a year since the final battle of Hybern, and Spring remains in ruin. Darkness fabrics the land as its High Lord rots forgotten. Lucien, being unable to stand the distance growing between him and the male he once called his closest friend, decides to bring him to the Human Lands. But soon, a new threat tied to Koschei begins to unearth itself, promising to uproot Prythian entirely, and it has set its eyes on Tamlin.
Elain Archeron is lost to her dreams and visions, reality blurring, time and space intertwining and unravelling. Memories of who she once was are twisted now, and a woman from her past has been haunting her. After meeting Mintheal and Emerald, two escapees from the Hewn City, she decides it's beyond time to step beyond the Night Court and take fate into her own hands.

Trying to ignore the festering magic in her body, that threatens to consume her.
One day, all that peace is threatened to be shaken, as a certain prince of Night asks for her to join the rebellion of the Hewn City and Illyria. From beneath the great mountains, an ancient song calls for her. She meets a woman with death in her eyes, and power in her veins, who makes Dahlia's blood boil while something clicks into place between them.

Still the ghost of what happened haunts him, and he sees in the now dull eyes of Nesta Archeron. The heaviness of his past weighs down, and he can only hope to shield his daughters from what had happened to him.

Perched on his throne, a glimmer of white catches his eyes and keeps them locked. A woman with cunning eyes and a thirst to piss him off has his head spinning in circles.

My Faery Lord
It was followed by a symphony. A string of notes that poured out one after the other. Turning to a river of music that flowed through the forest like waves of the ocean. Shocking through her body, filling some strange empty place deep in her soul.
A strange, full body sensation that had her sitting up, barely of her own awareness. Her head turned towards the source of the sound. Somewhere deeper into the forest.
Like something else was guiding her. Feyre moved towards it, the pain of her injury somehow lessened, as something more akin to bliss called to her from the source of the sudden song.
When Feyre strays from the group of sentries patrolling, she hurts herself after falling.
But not even an injury will stop her from finding the source of wistful music that floods her entire body when she hears it through the woods.
-Completed. 1 chapter. Includes Tamlin/Feyre Archeron
Bravery Is In Spite Of Fear
“Feyre.” He whispered, not a question, just acknowledgement. Still keeping her eyes tightly sealed, she felt a soft, tender kiss to the crown of her head.
Just like the loosened chains in her soul, her eyes gave away from the tension, against any will of her own. Like it all crumbled before him.
She held onto his hands. Grasping his fingers tightly, “Please. I can’t lose you again.”
“You never lost me.” He murmured, pressing another kiss, this one to her brow, “You have never lost me.”
When Tamlin is preparing to head to Hybern, Feyre holds him back. Unable to forget the day she last said goodbye and nearly lost him forever.
-Completed. 1 chapter. Includes Tamlin/Feyre Archeron
I wanna be yours
For @praetorqueenreyna for the ACOTAR Gift Exchange
Lucien's fucked up. Royally fucked up. And his father, already on the hunt for a reason to get rid of him, takes the opportunity to finally disown him. Now, jobless and wondering what he's supposed to do without catching more of Beron's attention and bringing his wrath upon him, Lucien finds himself venting to his oldest friend.
What he didn't expect was for Tamlin to offer him a position as his personal assistant.
It's just temporary, of course, but it's not long before the two find themselves entangled closer and closer together, and the more Lucien learns about Tamlin's friends and family, the more he finds old feelings rising to the surface faster than he can push them down again.
He's only gotta hope that Tamlin doesn't learn of what he did...
-Not completed. Set to have 20 chapters. Includes Tamlin/Lucien Vanserra, Feyre/Mercenary Lady, Tamlin/Rhysand, Tamlin/Hart
A Proposition
The High Lords meeting is being held in the Night Court, and Lucien is bored out of his brains, but when he realises the Heirs of Night and Spring have slipped off, what would have once been a very boring day suddenly becomes the opportunity for something he'd never even thought of.
-Completed. 1 chapter. Includes Rhysand/Tamlin/Lucien Vanserra

My dark secret is that sometimes I wish part of the pjo fandom had whatever the fuck is in the water of the HP fandom. The side that loves dramione and is not scared to delve into toxic, downright radioactive stuff to tell a story and how sometimes love is the farthest thing from pure. And I wish they had a marauder-esque side — people who create entire universe about a character that was mentioned once — but about the Titan Army.
I do love and am very grateful for all the lovely art and great fanfics but i wish sometimes people were more willing to create and engage with the deepeer, more obscure possibilities canon offers
i see what you’re saying—tbh i don't fw hp at all due to the jkr of it all, plus i was obsessed for like 10 years and have been Over It for like 4 at least. i can’t help but feel a little annoyed by the maurader’s fandom because it’s like…sure, rep is hard to come by, but like…you could’ve done the whole “skittles squad gay wizards 🤪” with any one of the millions of other books on wizards, why that one?? but anyways
i also think that a fandom run that way can be a bit risky because you’re subjected to a fandom hierarchy. like if you think one thing about xyz character mentioned once, that can be contradicted by some sort of regarded Holy Text Fanfiction from the Most Popular Writer that is essentially the word of law (think…is it All The Young Dudes? i think is what it was called?). tldr is the discourse could be rancid, but it could under other circumstances as well, so it’s kinda a “pick your poison” situation
i definitely think one of the pjo fandom’s main problems is something i saw in sanders sides 🤢 for years—it’s kinda like purity culture, but it’s wholesomeness culture. aka the insistence that pjo is The Most accepting fandom, The Most diverse, The Best xyz—when it’s just not true. everyone has different ideas on how to make the fandom The Best and Most Pure, which can include harassing creators and attempting to only “allow” certain creations. (And, of course the most important: the racism is rampant. it’s a minority of the fandom from what i’ve seen, though i’ve also blocked a lot of people. it’s definitely still there)
i think what happened in the hp/marauders fandom was an attempted separation from the author (dont look at me dont talk to me 🚬). an entire rework of the content and characters (aka, i see what you’re saying about a potentially sympathetic villain, but draco’s canon “redemption” was too little too late, the guy is a one-dimensional asshole, He Would Not Fucking Say That)
what was i saying
oh yeah. i don’t think that could happen with pjo because part of its wholesomeness persona is the Uncle Rick of it all, in which the outer layers of the fandom praise him for his representation and Not being jkr. i’m willing to admit the guy has flaws, though supposedly not enough for an entire uproot separation.
but yeah that aside i definitely see what you’re saying—my hope is that fandom will change and get better. the puritans will either grow out of their restricting ideas or move on to another fandom, for the most part. perhaps it’s wishful thinking, though the only thing we can do is continue to make our works and make the fandom safer one step at a time 💌

ooooh found your blog recently and as someone who really likes bakugou, this was very uncomfortable to read! but you make a TON of good points.
I completely agree with your take on bakugou's final arc. I wasn't happy with it either (to be fair I kinda just skimmed through the manga after paranormal liberation). We don't see scenes where he's relieved that the world's been saved, we don't see scenes where someone he cares about is threatened, we don't see him accept that being second is okay, we don't see him go collaboration over competition. His arc would've been much more complete if they showed him showing empathy. I think his core, his absolute drive to keep going, to never give up, to keep trying, is rather inspiring, and it wouldn't have been diluted if we'd seen a moment of reflection --of going, "It doesn't matter if I'm second, if someone else is chosen, because trying is what matters."
I don't know. I like Bakugou's character. I like the idea of him changing gradually. I like fanfics made years ago that have much better final arcs for him. I like that he keeps trying --because isn't trying sometimes all that you can do? It's hard to uproot your belief system --one that was encouraged by so many people, one that made up his identity for a long time. I like that he simultaneously doesn't care what people think of him and cares way too much. He's multidimensional and conflicting, and that's hard. He's growing as a person in itty-bitty steps, but it's happening.
I don't really know why I'm writing this --a gesture of understanding? Because Bakugou's my favorite character, and it's clear you hate him, but I think we still agree on a lot of points?
Feel free to ignore this --I think, at the end of the day, people relate with different parts of different characters, and they'll see either the best or worst in them-- and we're all entitled to our own opinions.
No, this is worth giving an answer to. I agree with you on why Bakugou's character arc was lacking.
Listen, I may be a bit of a Bakugou hater, but I consider myself a fair hater. I'll call balls and strikes as I see them.
I'm so harsh on him because of the lack of follow through on his character arc. Because I did have expectations for Bakugou after all of that buildup. I realized around the time of the apology that it was never going to happen.
It's also made worse by how much panel time he has which makes the lack of follow through all the more glaring. Bakugou as a concept could have been an interesting character with an author who was willing to take a few more risks. I've said it a couple of times, but one of the main issues with Horikoshi's atonement arcs is that they reek of insecurity. They get too much focus and there is too much telling over showing on how the audience is supposed to feel about them.
A lot of fanfiction writers do great things with the potential Bakugou's character had. (And some people spend so much time there that they forget what exists in canon is subpar.)
I do appreciate you taking the time to read through my blog and leaving this ask knowing it probably wasn't fun given the critiques I have of your favorite character.
Thanks for the ask

Writing Interview Tag Game
Thank you so much for the tag @roguishcat ❤ I love getting to chat about these things.
When did you start writing?
I know this sounds cheesy, but the answer is probably as soon as I could hold a pen. My grandma still has stacks of little stories I wrote (and illustrated ...) when I was a kid. Very cute, but I'm glad I gave up on drawing in the meantime.
I've been writing on and off ever since, but it wasn't until I was in my mid twenties that I decided I'd actively pursue a career in writing. I wrote a few original novels, none of which were ever successful in the world of traditional publishing, then got into fanfiction as a way of rekindling my joy. Once I'm done with my current fic, I'm ready to try with traditional publishing again. Maybe it'll work this time, maybe not, but I guess the bottom line is that I'll always write in some capacity.
Are there different themes or genres you enjoy reading than what you write?
I really like stories that are a little unsettling. Not horror, per se (I'm a coward), but those underlying creepy vibes, especially when they come wrapped up in beautiful language and actually end up culminating in something cool toward the end of the story. "Uprooted" by Naomi Novik comes to mind, "The Devil and the Dark Water" by Stuart Turton, and "Portrait of the Pale Elf" by @larvasmoon.
Is there a writer you want to emulate or get compared to often?
Terry Pratchett is the person who first sold me on the English language. Prior to his books, I'd never seen anyone use English in such a fun, cheeky yet poignant way, and it's definitely something I find myself emulating (all while hopefully putting my own spin on it). I have been compared to him a few times and it's always made my day.
Oh, and I guess Stephen Sommers because people compare my fic to "The Mummy" a lot. Which honestly, is just as flattering.
Can you tell me a bit about your writing space?
At my desk, with a mechanical keyboard. Not because I'm a hipster but because I have absolutely destroyed my laptop's keyboard and then the shop where I'd buy the replacement keys stopped selling my model and I refuse to replace the whole laptop.
I need a sense of quiet when I write. Usually, I write early in the morning before I go to work, and it's honestly my favorite time of the day. It's dark and quiet, I'm all alone, and the day still feels so fresh and full of possibility. I cannot write in public; I find it too distracting. Occasionally, when I'm very in the zone, I'll edit at work but it's never quite as productive.
What's your most effective way to muster up a muse?
Go and hunt that bitch down. I know many people love romanticizing their craft and if it helps them to light scented candles or play aesthetic playlists - go for it! For me, the most powerful tool is routine. Knowing that every morning I will sit down and I will write, whether I feel like it or not. Sometimes I drag my feet the whole time, sometimes things click into place and suddenly, I'm having the best time ever. But I will always put words on the page and for me, there's no better feeling than having written (past tense).
Are there any recurring themes in your writing? Do they surprise you?
You probably know this, but I really, really love stories where a regular guy/gal saves the day. It makes me so happy to see the evil vampire lord taken out by the mousy accountant, the fountain pen striking harder than the sword. I think it's because I like to read about real people. People that you could have met in real life, that seem simple on the outside, but have all this strength locked up inside. It's why I dislike stories with picture perfect beauty goddesses that always have the perfect quip, always take out their opponents with 1 blow because they're just that special.
Normal people are special, too. You just need to look a little harder to see.
What is your reason for writing?
I believe it was Brandon Sanderson who said "Stories are like real life but with the boring parts removed". That has really resonated with me. I think the beautiful thing about stories is that they can portray very real issues and conflicts in a way that is infinitely more satisfying because it's all been arranged just so. It can give you closure, it can make you see something in an entirely new light without feeling confrontational. It's like a really, really good conversation with the author and I hope that's what my writing feels like as well.
Is there any specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating?
Two things. I love when readers point out specific lines they enjoyed and I love it when they tell me they reread my work. The term "comfort read" makes me particularly happy because that's exactly how I reread my favorite stories as well.
How do you want to be thought about by your readers?
I think the most important part to me is that my stories feel real. I dislike pretentious, over-the-top writing where you can tell the author is trying super hard to sound clever or sexy or just drowns you in heaps of cheap, undeserved drama that never leads anywhere. With my stories, I want things to feel earned. Natural. Maybe you wouldn't have made those choices, but it makes sense that these characters would have and now we're looking at the very real consequences of their actions.
What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?
Character voice, specifically in 3rd person limited. My favorite type of narration because I love getting into a character's head and making you see things through their eyes.
How do you feel about your own writing?
I think every writer struggles with their confidence here and there. I've gone through so many cycles in the past 1.5 years, it's kind of crazy. Going from constant failure in the world of publishing to writing your very first fanfiction just for fun and then having it blow up out of nowhere, all these people showering you in praise, only for the vast majority of them to disappear immediately afterward is a lot to process. We write for ourselves, yes, but as a writer, you can't help but take reader responses to heart. Fortunately, I've never let it influence what I write or how I write; it really only affects my mental state. unraveling — part three, season ten
read on ao3 | read part one | hermitcraft, 2.9k words
this is the third and final part of my fic for MCYTblr AUFest! once again, if you haven't read the first part, please check it out for more info about this AU. enjoy this infodump about plant-based fibers disguised as a minecraft fanfiction!
Ever since Pearl began expanding her original starter base, she’s been working on some kind of big secret project.
It probably has something to do with her choice of theme this season. Or maybe it's an even bigger, more spectacular redstone machine than the already very impressive Dyeduction. Whatever it is, Pearl’s determined to keep it a secret, which means Gem is even more determined to figure it out.
She watches Pearl from a distance, using her spyglass. Pearl’s base is developing into a labyrinth of different structures, with so many entrances and passageways wedged into tight corners, each building blending together into a larger whole. It’s getting big enough that Gem can get lost in it. She gets turned around even from afar, watching Pearl enter a building and emerge somewhere completely different a few minutes later.
This morning, Pearl seems to be harvesting some of the many different plants around her base. She clips back the fast-growing vines that crawl up the sides of her buildings, wades through dense fields of flowers to uproot entire plants, and even collects bark from the bushes and trees. Gem can’t imagine what she’s doing with it all, and she’s even more confused to see Pearl deposit her harvest into a large pool and leave it there.
After a while, Pearl spreads her elytra and rockets off in the direction of the shopping district. Gem takes the opportunity to poke around her base and investigate directly. She stops at the pool first, which has a small channel out to the river, not quite wide enough for a boat to pass through.
When Gem steps into the pool, the water only comes up to her knees. The bottom is full of different stems and leaves, weighed down by rocks to keep it from floating up to the top. Nearby is a small hut filled with shelves and shelves of the same plants in various stages of drying.
Gem has been toying with the idea of a proper scientific investigation for a while now, and clearly Pearl is the perfect subject. She takes a recording device out of her pocket and begins to describe her surroundings.
“This is Dr. GeminiTay in the field, reporting on my observations at PearlescentMoon’s base. Recently, I've observed several anomalies in Pearl’s behavior, and I came to the conclusion that I must analyze her natural habitat for hints as to what may be causing this…deviation.” Gem nods, proud of herself. She sounds so professional! “It appears that Pearl has been soaking plants in water, then letting them dry. The purpose of this behavior is as of yet unknown.”
Nearby the pool and the shed full of drying plants is a building that Gem knows has been here for a while, but she doesn’t think she’s ever been inside. The top floor is full of more plants in the next stage of the process, whatever process that is. One one side is a pile of fully dried plant material, and on the other side is a heaping pile of fibers and several chests stuffed to the brim with very tiny wood shavings.
Gem relays this information as best she can into the recording device, then takes a staircase down to the basement, which is much larger than the room above. The center of the room is taken up by several large spinning wheels, each hooked up to a redstone device that Gem doesn’t even bother to try and make sense of. Presumably they help automate the process, though they all seem to be shut off right now. Gem is tempted to flick one of the levers to see what happens, but she’s not Grian. She has more self-control than that.
Though, it would be really funny if she broke something.
Gem peeks outside to make sure Pearl isn’t back yet, before running back to switch the lever on, giggling to herself. The wheel starts spinning, but since there’s no fibers or threads on the spool, nothing else interesting happens. She’s disappointed, but also relieved that she didn’t break anything. She flicks the lever back off and moves on.
Pearl has hung several picture frames around the room, but instead of artwork, the frames contain embroidery projects. The largest of them reads live laugh love in familiar cursive lettering, surrounded by a border of leafy vines. Most of the others are textless, with designs of different plants and flowers.
A large table on the left side of the room is covered in dozens of small scraps of handmade fabric. Some are of higher quality than others. None of them look like the sort of crochet pattern that Gem’s used to seeing on Pearl’s body. Pearl must be trying to branch out with her projects, and these are some of her first attempts. There’s another embroidery project hanging right above the table, the only other one with any text, which reads, Start small.
Beside the table is an ordinary loom, and next to it, a larger, more intricate version constructed out of several different types of wood. Normal looms are only used for banners, but Pearl’s handmade loom seems to be built for broader purposes. On the other side of the loom, in the back corner of the room, is an iron door without any visible way to open it.
At this point, Gem can safely assume that she's found the room where Pearl keeps her mystery project. Clearly it's some kind of fiber art—or several different kinds at once, from the look of it. But all the things she's seen so far are just pieces of the puzzle, and she still can’t figure out what Pearl’s making.
Her only remaining option is to see what’s behind the locked door.
Now, Gem could easily go home and construct her own lever to open the door, or just break through the wall herself, but that’s no fun. She’d much rather figure out how to use this secret door the right way. Knowing Pearl, it’s not a special kind of lock that only she has the key to, but some kind of thematically relevant puzzle that anyone can figure out if they try.
So Gem tries. For a good long time, she looks around the room for hints. She stops in front of the table of scraps, looking at the embroidered message. Start small. It doesn’t quite fit with Pearl’s sense of interior decoration. The live laugh love one is clearly a joke, a reference to last season, but there’s nothing about Start small that holds any sort of meaning to Gem.
Unless it’s meant as a clue.
In a moment of inspiration, Gem stands on her tiptoes, reaching over the table to take the frame down from the wall. She looks over to the door, but it hasn’t moved. When she flips the frame around, she can see the messy backside of the stitching, plus a hand-written note from Pearl, reading, smaller than that.
Definitely a clue, then. Gem switches on her recording device and begins to narrate.
“The wild Pearl is known for her cleverness,” she tells her imaginary peer-review science board. “One of the defining behaviors of a Pearl is to set up puzzles for her friends. It’s important to provide her with enrichment by participating, which is why I’m doing this, of course. Not because I’m nosy.”
She paces up and down the room, the reassuring rhythm of her footsteps against the floor helping to clear her mind. That is, until she steps down on a block that makes a strange metallic clanking sound.
Gem may not know much about redstone, but she knows a hidden hopper when she hears one. The spot where she’s standing is just a few blocks away from the door. All she has to do now is figure out what to throw into it.
“Pearls are practical creatures,” Gem says. “This Pearl would not choose something rare or difficult to access as the key to a door she uses all the time. It’ll probably be something inside this room.”
Start small. Smaller than that. The answer’s sitting right in front of her. Pearl doesn’t start a crochet project by jumping into it blindly and hoping for the best. She plans it out beforehand, making patterns and testing out stitches. All of the different test swatches on this table are her way of starting small, practicing for the big project she’s making.
Gem grabs one of the scraps of fabric, dropping it on the floor above the hopper. The door opens with a loud clank, and she enters the room, holding her breath in anticipation.
She’s not expecting Pearl to actually be inside. She knows for a fact that she saw Pearl fly off, though admittedly there was plenty of time for Pearl to sneak back into this room while Gem was wandering around her base. But the surprise of Pearl’s presence pales in comparison to the shock of what she’s making.
Pearl is hunched over a player-sized figure made up of many different kinds of fabric, lying on top of a large worktable. Only one of its arms are attached, the other sitting right beside the empty shoulder, and both legs end just below the knee, still unfinished. Most of the fabrics look coarser than the soft wool yarn that Gem is used to, but there’s no mistaking who it’s supposed to be.
“Oh. My. Gosh.” Gem blinks several times, unable to believe what she’s seeing. “Pearl, are you multiplying?”
Pearl laughs, sitting back and looking up at her. “Do you like it?”
Gem takes a few steps closer, taking it all in. The new Pearl’s plastic button eyes have been replaced with wooden ones, and her hair is a mixture of several different textures and shades of brown. She’s wearing a white postal jacket like the one Pearl’s wearing now, but this one is made out of a more refined version of some of the swatches in the previous room.
When Gem commissions new outfits to fit her themes, she doesn’t spend much time thinking about the work that goes into it behind the scenes. She just pays their exorbitant prices and assumes they must have worked very hard. Now, having seen all the steps in Pearl’s process, she’s baffled as to how her clothesmakers are able to deliver their finished products so quickly, or how Pearl herself has gotten so much done without anyone noticing.
“It’s beautiful, Pearl. It’s so detailed.” Gem can’t think of anything to say that doesn’t feel like an understatement. “Have you been working on this all season?”
“Only since I decided on my solarpunk theme,” Pearl says. “It shouldn’t take me much longer. I’ve processed most of the fibers that I need already, and that’s the slowest part.”
“I have so many questions,” Gem says. It’s a little disconcerting to see this new version of Pearl in an unfinished state, looking so much like Pearl does now, but lifeless and incomplete.
“I can explain it to you if you want!” Pearl looks excited at the prospect. “There’s a lot of steps, but if you break it down it’s actually pretty simple—”
“Have you been hanging out with Mumbo recently?” Gem asks. “None of what you’re doing is simple, Pearl. This is very complicated!”
“Already had a peek around my base, did you?” Pearl tuts in mock disappointment.
“It’s only fair! You don’t get to complain after what you did to my base with all those pickle messages.”
“Ah, well.” Pearl shrugs. “You may have a point.”
“What is it for, anyway?” Gem can’t help but notice that Pearl isn’t making these modifications to herself, but to an entirely different entity. “Why do you need another you?”
“Gem!” Pearl laughs at her. “You got all the way to this point and you still haven’t figured it out?”
“What do you—Oh. Wait.” Gem blinks. “Are you—you’re building yourself a replacement body?”
“There you go,” Pearl says. “We got there eventually.”
“But that doesn’t make any sense!” Gem says. “How do you get yourself into a whole different body? Can you turn back after you’re done? If you can just go around switching bodies, what’s stopping you from being a—a pig, or a sheep or something?”
“Oh, that’s easy,” Pearl says, waving her hand dismissively. “I just, y’know…” She pauses, frowning. “Well, I—hm, okay. I’m not sure, actually.”
“You’re not sure?”
“I don’t know how it works,” Pearl says. “It just sort of happens. Like how everyone gets new outfits to stick through respawn.”
“That’s normal, though. Everyone does it!”
“Yeah, but how?”
Gem opens her mouth, then closes it again. She doesn’t know. How does she not know?
She feels a little dizzy from how fast her thoughts are racing. Gem pulls up a chair and plops herself down, trying to get her thoughts in order.
In this world, and in every world since she spawned, there have been rules. They vary from place to place, and they can be changed, too—even bent or broken. Gem knows people who break the rules—some of the most infamous rulebreakers in the world reside on this very server with her—but she’s never counted Pearl among that number.
And, now that she thinks about it, that seems like an oversight on her part. Gem has known Pearl for longer than most of the other Hermits, and she can’t remember ever questioning how Pearl came to exist in this form, this version of herself that Gem’s always known.
Gem has never broken the rules, or at least, she’s never knowingly attempted to do so. She’s happy where she is, building and mining and fighting the normal way, seeking out challenges from within the confines of what’s supposed to be possible. She’s amazed by the accomplishments of her reality-bending friends, but that sort of thing has never interested her.
Now, standing on the edge of what seems to be a rule-breaking realization, Gem wonders if this is how they felt—Etho, or Cleo, or Doc, or Pearl, apparently—any of the Hermits that ever asked the right questions, or put the pieces together, or stumbled upon a loophole in the rulebook.
She clings to the fabric of her lab coat in wonder. What kind of force tethers this silly costume she’s wearing to her own body? Why does it stay with her even after death? How does any of this make sense?
Is everything just a—
“See, you can't question these things,” Pearl says, bursting through her train of thought. “Or it all falls apart.”
“Falls apart?” Gem asks, alarmed. “What does that mean? That sounds bad. Is it bad? Have I broken the world?”
“No! No, of course not, don’t worry.” Pearl rests a soft hand on Gem’s shoulder. “Well, maybe a little bit, but it’s fine. Nothing that can’t be fixed.”
Gem puts her head in her hands, taking a deep breath. It helps, a little. “This is—a lot, Pearl.”
“Here, let me show you something.” Pearl holds up a swatch of fabric, which Gem is reasonably confident in identifying as crochet, though she doesn’t know the specific stitch. “It’s like this. The fabric holds itself together just fine if you leave it alone, but when you pull on the edges…” She does just that, and the first row collapses on itself, then the next, then the next. “Things start to go a bit wonky. But…” She pulls out a crochet hook and starts stitching, rebuilding the row she’d just unraveled. “You can make them right again, if you learn how. It can go back to normal. Or, well, normal enough.”
“But what about people who don’t want it to be normal?” Gem asks. “How do they deal with it?”
“You’ll have to ask them about it,” Pearl says. “That’s not how I do things. I prefer to patch the holes I find rather than explore what’s inside them.”
Gem leans her head against Pearl’s shoulder. “This really hurts my brain.”
“I know. I’m sorry, Gem. I didn’t mean to push you into this.”
“It’s okay,” Gem says. “The fact that I made it through two and a half seasons of Hermitcraft before getting here is probably pretty impressive, right?”
“It’s not for everybody,” Pearl says. “Like Grian, for example.”
“Grian?”
“He noped out of it even harder than I did, you know. Did it so well that I’m not sure he even remembers anymore. I don’t want to bring it up with him, because if he did forget, I think he meant for it to be that way.”
“Huh. I had no idea.” Gem lets out a heavy sigh. “I don’t know if I want to go his route or not. Or your route, or some other route. I feel like I know way less about the world than I did this morning.”
“You should probably talk to someone other than me about it,” Pearl suggests. “It’s different for everyone. But whatever you do, it should be your own way, not someone else’s.”
“My own way.” Gem smiles. “I like the sound of that, whatever it is.”
“Don’t stress yourself out over it,” Pearl warns her. “I know the way you are. Take your time, Gem. You have basically forever to figure it out.”
“Yeah, yeah, I’ll try.” Gem wraps her arms around Pearl. “Thank you, Pearl.”
“For what?”
“For explaining stuff,” Gem says. “For being my friend. For being so cuddly, too. You are so soft.”
“Aw, you’re welcome.” Pearl hugs her back. “Would you be mad if I got less soft, though?”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Gem says. “I love every version of you.”
Pearl laughs softly. “I love every version of you too.”

Genuinely curious as to if you asked permission to use Rachel’s characters and she said yes or if you just decided Lore Olympus is popular enough to make a fan comic of and are hoping you don’t receive a cease and desist? Can anyone create a remake comic of original content and just change what you don’t like about it and it’s considered legal if you say the characters belong to the original creator? There is plenty of disappointing media out there that could be remade. I understand you cannot use their characters for profit so is just posting it ok?
Yes, anyone can, because it's called fanfiction lmao Obviously in my case the term "fan" is being used loosely here as at this point it's more like "foe"fiction LMAO but the same principles apply. Unless I try to claim LO is my own creation or make a profit off Rekindled, I should be in the clear. If legal action was taken against me then it would set a precedent against all forms of fanfiction, rewrite, redraw, etc. content around LO which are all essentially doing the same thing Rekindled is doing. I think people tend to view Rekindled as somewhat of an "exception" that's vulnerable to legal action because it's an actual weekly comic put into practice in the same playing field as LO (though they're on massively different bases obviously LOL), but there's not much more separating it from the LO redraw accounts or even the genuine fan accounts that have learned how to draw in Rachel's style (and use it to make their own LO self-inserts and whatnot). I had the time and resources and experience to do what I do through Rekindled, but every redraw, rewrite, fanfiction, etc. account are making the exact same statement I am, whether intentionally or not - "I do/don't like the canon, but/so here's what I think it would be like if it went like this".
There is definitely plenty of media out there that could be remade, and a lot of them are by the fanfiction writers out there who are filling that niche within their respective fandoms. LO is the one I want to do because it's the one that interests me and compels me the most to rewrite.
Not to mention, it's already a bold statement in and of itself to say that I'm "using Rachel's characters", a statement that likely wouldn't hold up in court LMAO Her "characters" are literally just stylized self-insert versions of public domain figures. She did not write The Hymn to Demeter. She did not create Hades, or Persephone, or Hecate, or any of the other characters she writes about. She does not own an entire religion or its deities. The only thing that she really "owns" is the licensing rights to the name "Lore Olympus", and while the style of LO is very unique and identifiable, you can't trademark/copyright a style because that uproots the entire foundation of what art is (ironically no one has had an original idea SINCE the Greeks, we all just learn and adapt our styles based on other artists that we get inspired by and learn from).
Shit, there are series completely unrelated to LO that get harassed or otherwise warned that they could cross into "legal territory" with LO just because they're Greek myth comics. Punderworld, Theia Mania, H x P Ficlets, all of these are comics that also tackle the H x P myth, and while they aren't attempting to do the same thing as Rekindled (as they exist on their own terms) it's really disappointing when I see people talk about these comics purely through the scope of Lore Olympus as if LO invented Greek myth. If WT/Rachel tried to pull rank over the story's "characters", they'd be picking a fight with every other Greek myth comic, book, movie, etc. and they oughta know that's not a fight they're gonna win lol
So everything beyond LO's branding is, in and of itself, fanfiction. Rekindled is just another level deeper by being fanfiction of a fanfiction. As long as I'm not profiting off Lore Olympus' namesake or distributing my work with the misconception that I created LO, it's legally fine. Morally, I'm sure it doesn't exactly make me a saint to do it, it definitely took a lot of hubris for me to say "yeah I don't like how you wrote your story enough that I felt the need to rewrite it completely" and I wouldn't blame anyone for thinking doing so is icky. There are certain lines I won't cross - I don't use the general LO hashtags because my content is very critical and my work isn't really for the fans, I don't encourage anyone to "show Rachel" what I do here because none of what I do here is obligated to be seen by her (and I know it wouldn't be in her best interest to see it anyways, she's literally said that she doesn't like criticism so why tf would I wanna show her a comic that exists to criticize her work lol), and I'm not planning on posting it to Webtoons because that's Rachel's territory. I don't want to overstep both in the legal sense and in the moral one. I think it's more than enough for me to just post my stuff here for the people who are seeking it, and not profit off it or directly affiliate it with LO/Rachel beyond crediting.
All that said, in a moral and legal sense, what I'm doing is literally the basis of fanfiction, and I wouldn't be going to such lengths and spending this much time every week putting out episodes every week if I never cared about LO and how it made us all feel, even if some of us don't love it as much as we used to.

emma as a scared new leafs fan WHY are so many people saying this will be the core last season together?
they say it every year, lol. it's mostly just frustration over losses, but if anything, this year it's a weaker threat than ever because auston and willy just signed multi year expensive deals, and jt and mitch, whose contracts are expiring after 24-25 season, both have nmc meaning they cannot be traded from this team without waiving that............. and that really does not happen to star players much at all. imo if they were gonna move anyone from the core, it probably would have been willy last summer, and instead, they gave him everything he wanted and signed him long term which indicates to me mitch will probably get the same treatment. as for jt, he'll take a probably significant paycut and stay but. every dumbass is out here writing fanfiction in their heads for why mitch or jt would ever agree to uproot their whole lives and families to be moved to a team for basically no reason. they have all of the leverage here, and there's no threat of them being traded and if you go watch them talk to the media, you'll see how calm it is. if it's the end of anything, it's the end of the coaching staff imo.
