The Most Annoying Trope Showdown: Round 1, Poll 11
Hero's Journey
The archetypal plot structure (read the TVTropes page if you don't know what it is).
Propaganda:
Horrifically overused, mostly because a lot of writing advice books claim it's the *only* story structure that exists (it is not).
Unrequited Love ASwitcheroo
A character has an unrequited crush on another character, but when they get over that, their former love interest develops a crush on them.
Propaganda:
For when you want to shake things up a bit in your “Will They, Won’t They?” subplot but you’re too scared to actually answer right now. Like yeah, relationships can be complicated like that, but this trope usually feels too cheap and contrived to keep me invested. Bonus points if the switch happens in the same episode (i.e. Character A falls out of love with Character B and five minutes later B realizes they’re actually in love with A)

the stol1tz xmas bauble is so weird
besides the obvious DARVO behind making Stolas the one who looks uncomfortable, why does Viv expect us to ship this two if every time they're together one of them is super not into it?
yes there's merch where they're more couple-like but if we must take the route of stol1tz we need to see them actually enjoying hanging out together and each other's company and not in 5 second flashbacks
but whenever Viv tries to do a couple in love they always seem to just devolve into mushyness where the original traits of that couple are lost
soppy puppy love works for M&M because Moxxie is that kind of person, but then it was stapled onto Fizz/Ozzie who definitely didn't read like that in their first appearance. I thought they'd be more like Comic Book Guy/Agnes Skinner where they have fun being awful together but with a coat of lust paint on it
if if it happens with stol1tz it'll be so weird because Blitzo is super not that guy, it's just going to feel like Stolas brainjacked him to be the strong telenovela hero he wants
but I have a suspicion that before that happens Viv is going to try to write it as the Unrequited Love Switcheroo trope, which doesn't work when we still don't know what Blitzo would even see in Stolas. it feels like trauma bonding when the writing's answer for 'why does he love him though?' is just 'because Stolas is just fundamentally better than him and is pure and good and Blitzo is low and common and bad and needs Stolas to fix him'
if there's anything worse than Blitzo being made into a shoujo romance hero, it'll be the plot dragging out another 2 seasons to get there and having to watch Blitzo and Vassago fight over Stolas like he's some prize when they should be hooking up with each other instead
It's like Viv is hellbent on throwing literally everything at the wall with these two, every tired romance trope she can think of, but never going the route of showing them enjoy their time together, enjoy one another as people. And now it's too late to do that.

Kyouka: Friendzoned and friendzoning
So. Jirou seems to be the female classmate who the majority of 1-A's guys are most comfortable with.
However, contrary to my headcanon about the most popular 1-A guys, I feel like most of them aren't romantically interested in her.
It might sound a bit sad, but I headcanon that her miffedness about Mineta not naming her among those female classmateds that he wanted to perv on, is not entirely unwarranted... although, having Mineta salivating over you, is probably not something that anyone with self-respect should desire.
I can see her having gained some male admirers outside of the hero students, after the cultural festival.
At first sight, it might seem that Hagakure and Ashido are the most romance-focused girls in 1-A. However, supplemental and canon materials have depicted the tomboyish Jirou as being conscious about the male gender, the most:
During 1-A's practice match against Togata, she was the only girl who completely freaked out over his nudity.
In one of the drama CD stories, she made a big deal inside her head about holding onto the hem of Tokoyami's uniform, when they visited a haunted house together.
In one of the gag comics, she thought that Bakugou was self-conscious about holding her a girl's hands, when he wasn't actually. She basically just self-projected onto him.
In several of the gag comics, Jirou has been depicted as being self-conscious around Kirishima: One example has her perving on him in his costume. Another one, that retold 1-A's trip to the mall before Deku got accosted by Shigaraki, has Jirou imagining being on a date with Kirishima, when the kids paired up to look for Deku... and be pissed, when Kirishima dropped her at the first sight of Bakugou.
Ironically enough, she displays none of that awareness around guys who were hinted as having some interest in her: Kaminari (and I think, I've read something somewhere about Kouda liking her since their practical exams?)
Oh Jirou. You're definitely among those 1-A kids, who have the most growing up to do in the romantic department.
...
I just noticed that, except for Togata, all of the examples above include guys with whom Kaminari is explicitly friends with.
And now I headcanon poor Kaminari getting friendzoned by Jirou until at least until graduation.
The irony of 1-A’s resident flirt being canonically the first one out of all of 1-A’s boys who recognizes that he had fallen for someone: The girl, who just goes through successively crushing on all of his close friends... Now who's the flighty one, huh?
Yes, I imagine the unrequited love switcheroo trope, where Jirou won’t be able to recognize and acknowledge her own feelings for Kaminari for a while. She starts to consciously takes notice of him as a romantic prospect - juuust right when he's about to move on from his own feelings for her.
Drama ensues.

I Watched Every GMMTV BL Series part 3/?
2016/2017 2018
2020
2019 feels like a turning point. Like, this was the year they decided to try making good series. I know I didn't have great things to say about the older series, but I generally go into a series wanting to like it and I tend to be pretty forgiving.
FYI, I know some of these names have multiple spellings. I'm just using whatever spelling was used in the subtitles on YouTube.
He’s Coming to Me - 2019
After dying on his twenty-second birthday, Med (Singto Prachaya) remains as a ghost in the cemetery. He relives his death every night in his dreams, but can’t recall any of his life. After many years with no human visitors, Med is visited by a boy named Thun who can seemingly see and hear him. Years later, Thun returns as a university student (Ohm Pawat), and proposes that Med live with him so they can solve the mystery of Med’s untimely death.
This drama was so close to being perfect. Ohm gave a great performance. Singto was so much better in this than in SOTUS. It had a healthy balance of drama and comedy, without the drama ever feeling forced. I just felt a little let down by the ending. Spoilers ahead.
So, I was fully prepared for a sad ending. And as much as I love a happy ending, this was a rare case where I felt like a sad ending would have been better. Giving this impossible romance a miracle happy ending felt like a copout. It felt like fanservice. Like they set out to tell a new and interesting story, but didn’t have the guts to disappoint anyone with a sad ending. And then I'm the one left to grapple with the logistics of dating a ghost. But my biggest problem with the ending was that they fucking solved the mystery behind Med’s death and then just forgave his murderer who has been living free of consequences for twenty years and absolutely no one has a problem with it.

Not even trying not to look like a lunatic.
Theory of Love - 2019
Third (Gun Atthaphan) and Khai (Off Jumpol) are third year film majors in university and best friends. Third has harbored secret feelings for Khai for three years, but Khai is a serial dater and (supposedly) straight. Khai constantly takes advantage of Third’s loyalty, unaware of his true feelings. After repeatedly having his feelings hurt by Khai, Third decides to get over him once and for all. But when Third tries to take a step back, suddenly Khai is ready to take a step forward.
I think…I liked this series? I mean, like, I was ready to throw hands every 40 seconds, but that means I was invested, right? I liked Third, but he’s such a pushover I wanted to strangle him. Gun is an excellent actor, but just because he can cry on command doesn’t mean I want to see him do it for twelve episodes straight. Khai is an asshole, not just as a love interest, but as a friend. I don’t think I’ve ever actively rooted against a male lead so hard. The side pairings are kind of forgettable.
Anyways, Third mentions the movie Flipped several times, and despite having seen the movie and loving the book as a kid, it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that this series is just doing Flipped. I have to say, I’m a sucker for the unrequited love switcheroo premise. Which is probably why I like Theory of Love maybe more than it deserves. But I'm not as bad as Third, whose favorite movie is Flipped.

Me trying to get through all these shows.
Dark Blue Kiss - 2019
A sequel to Kiss Me Again (2018), following Pete (Tay Tawan) and Kao (New Thitipoom). After three years together, their relationship is still a secret from almost everyone, including Kao’s mother. This causes insecurity in Pete, especially after Kao starts to tutor his mom’s boss’s son, Non (AJ Chayapol). Torn between helping his mom and placating his boyfriend, Kao decides to continue tutoring Non in secret.
It’s hard to explain, but the way this drama tiptoed over that line into overdramatic hit an angsty sweet-spot for me in a way these dramas rarely do. I’m gonna mark this one down as a guilty pleasure, because despite Pete being an absolute red flag, I loved this series. It was hard to watch Kao dig himself into a hole, but it’s easy to see why he did, because Pete is completely unreasonable from the start. And why, because he felt threatened by some baby-faced high school kid? AJ looks like a toddler in this series. A seven foot toddler who I want to punch in the mouth, but a toddler nonetheless.
Minor spoiler here, Non’s ending felt unresolved. As much as I hated that little punk, seeing him being dragged off by his abusive, homophobic dad was not in any way satisfying.
I am happy to report that you do not need to watch Kiss Me Again to follow this series. It was good to see the whole group of college friends return, since they were one of the few parts of that series I enjoyed. The side pair is also two returning characters from Kiss Me Again. If you tend to like side pairs, you’ll probably like them, but I’m generally indifferent to side pairs, so they were fine.

*dramatic violin*

Soulmate - The One. Like he was created for me, specifically. Sugar Daddy - He may not have it all, but he knows how to spoil me. Friend With Benefits - Despite my better judgment, I went and caught feelings. Second Lead - All my friends love him, but I don’t feel the spark. Overeager Pursuer - Tries to be cute but just gets on my nerves. Vindictive Ex - It’s like he’s punishing me for knowing I could do better. Love Rival - Literally what did I do to deserve this? -

Kamiiii do you have any romance tropes you’re really into but can’t find a lot of media including it? do you have any tropes you wish were more/less popular than they actually are?
i looove unrequited love tropes, especially “switcheroo” tropes where a crush isn’t returned so the crusher gets over it, only for the crushee to develop feelings for the former. i think the angst in that would be soooo good. similarly, i wish people would write more “obstructive love interest”-trope fics where someone keeps rejecting another’s crush due to them misinterpreting their behavior the angst and pining is god-tier when done right omg, and i wish that step-cest fics were less popular 😭😭😭
Hmmm… It’s usually not that I can’t find my favored troupes but more so that it’s not always executed right (at least to my standards)!
Sometimes with the fake-dating troupe, it feels more rushed than it should be— at least where love is concerned. The lust is usually planned out well but they always seem to fall head over heels wayy too fast, ESPECIALLY if it’s enemies to lovers & fake-dating put together. One second they’re ripping out each other’s throats & the next they’re saying they’ve always loved each other?? Hello? Where’s the pain? The unrequited love phase where one falls for the other?
That and also recently, slow burns haven’t been slow. OR when they finally do burn, they don’t engulf into the flames of desire & crumble. If that makes any sense 😭
AND YOU HAD ME SCARED IN THE FIRST HALF OF THAT LAST SENTENCE HELP. But yes I totally agree, it’s disgusting how popular it is.

Slap on the Unrequited Love Switcheroo, another oldie but a goodie, and we have Farsight, finally, happily moved on from Secretkeeper, seeing her as nothing more than a friend, and likely with Mastermind, someone who she really understands and enjoys being with, while Secretkeeper is in her unhappy relationship with Morrowseer. Now we have Secretkeeper, disliking Mastermind for some reason and coming up with another reason why she doesn't like him. Secretkeeper now represses an anguished confession of her love around Farsight because she would rather have her friendship than lose her or ruin everything. Secretkeeper, who thinks that she's too late, and now has to live with the life she chose. gosh, tropes are so fun.
I know that Farsight x Secretkeeper yuri is so cool but but what if we put an oldie but a goodie on it and made it one-sided? Think about it. Farsight being happy for Secretkeeper's sake when she was courted by Morrowseer but also feeling so sad and she doesn't know why. Farsight knowing that she'd always be a friend and nothing more. Farsight scrambling to correct herself whenever she slips and makes it sound like she loves Secretkeeper a little too much. i'm just saying.

Ginny Weasley and the Order of the Phoenix
Soo, here’s some shameless self-promotion of the second chapter of my latest story, Ginny Weasley and the Order of the Phoenix.
_
Ginny lazily flicked over a page of a cheesy muggle romance novel that Hermione had lent her, grimacing ever so often at the many irrelevant details present in each paragraph.
“Anastasia bit her lip as she pondered over what could very well be the biggest decision of her life: Eddie or Jake?
The exotic, handsome Eddie was the epitome of perfection , with his platinum hair and topaz eyes; but Jake had always been there for her… not to mention the fact that he had perfect abs…
Oh, what would she choose?!”
Ginny couldn’t help it. She let out a soft snort which made Hermione, who was reading an awfully thick book across from her, glare at her reproachfully.
‘D’you really read these kind of books, Hermione?’
Haermione merely turned pink before proceeding to calmly ignore her friend.
‘Do Ron and Harry know about this?’ Ginny persisted, barely concealing her smirk, though she could already guess the answer.
‘Ron and Harry wouldn’t know enough to appreciate this kind of literature,’ said Hermione with as much dignity she could muster.
Ginny grinned at her friend before giving the novel back to her. ‘I don’t think I could appreciate this kind of literature either.’
Hermione tutted as she took the book from Ginny’s hands and carefully hid it in her trunk between her thick schoolbooks, which made Ginny’s grin widen.
The two of them were sitting in Ginny’s room: Ron was down in the orchard de-gnoming the garden, seeing that he hadn’t completed his chores the previous day in favour of playing chess.
A tawny owl impatiently tapped at the window and Ginny quickly unfastened the latch to let it in. She untied the letter from its leg and scanned it. Michael Corner’s name was signed at the end of the letter with a flourish, and Ginny felt a slight swooping sensation in her stomach as she saw his name.
‘Who is it from?’ said Hermione curiously.
‘Michael Corner’
‘Oh!’ said Hermione interestedly.‘What does it say- I mean- of course, if you want to say…’ she trailed off, looking slightly unsure.
Ginny smiled. Hermione was sometimes strange like that. She could go all “I-know-more-than-you-will-ever-know-so-shut-up-and-listen-to-me-quietly” sometimes, at times she was just a normal teenaged girl who loved gossip, and sometimes, just sometimes, she was a brilliant but unsure muggle-born witch who felt out of place in the Wizarding World and had a thirst to prove her self. Most of all, however, she was an amazing friend who would always give the best advice and be ready with wise words of comfort when you needed them. She was like the sister Ginny never had.
She read the letter aloud, the fluttering feeling in her chest still prevailing.
“Dear Ginny,
I hope this letter finds you in good health- awfully formal, isn’t he?’
‘He’s being a gentleman, Ginny.’
‘You do sound like Mum.’
‘Come on, what does it say?’
‘”How was your summer so far?
I wanted to say that I truly enjoyed the time we spent together last year. I was hoping that you could go out with me on a date to Hogsmeade at the first Hogsmeade weekend we get at school. Maybe we can write to each other as well during the vacation and perhaps meet at Diagon Alley.
Waiting for your reply,
Michael”’
Hermione grinned at Ginny. ‘What are you going to say? He seems to fancy you a lot!’
Ginny didn’t reply at once. The thing was, she was not sure. She liked Michael well enough, and he was really fun to be around (even though his letter sounded like something Percy would write). She had found him really cute when she had first seen him at the Yule Ball, with his (neat) black hair and (non-green) blue eyes. He was sweet too; he had nervously asked her to dance (and he hadn’t tread on her toes), and she had enjoyed talking and laughing with him.
They had hung out after the ball as well, walking around the school grounds, and had also flown once or twice in the Quidditch Pitch. Talking with him after the third task had been something of a relief- though she felt guilty while thinking of that- she needn’t worry about Cedric dying a terrible death or him returning. She almost forgot about her nightmares around him too. Almost.
But then there was the thing about Harry as well… she had accepted the fact that Harry would never, ever see her as anything more than Ron’s little sister. But she had fancied him for about five years, and it wasn’t just a simple celebrity crush either. It was all too much complicated. But she was supposed to be over him. Wallowing in self-pity over a boy who was never going to notice her was useless, and she wasn’t going to be a naive, useless girl this time around.
She vividly remembered the emotions coursing through her as she had finally decided that it was enough. She was not going to pine after a boy who had no feelings whatsoever towards her.

The Most Annoying Trope Showdown: Round 3, Poll 3
All Just a Dream
The reveal that a certain plotline was all a dream.
Propaganda:
It immediately kills all stakes, breaks audience immersion, and basically makes the case 'you should never have been invested in that plotline'. An incredibly unsatisfying ending.
It's just so lazy and makes everything pointless! What changed? Everyone is exactly the same as before the story. Not to mention that's not how dreams work, unless you immediately write it down you're gonna forget the vast majority of the dream really quick, if you even remember it at all. And dreams are messy and don't make sense, they jump from location to location and don't follow a coherent plot. If a character is dreaming, it should be very obvious because they're so different from reality.
Unrequited Love Switcheroo
A character has an unrequited crush on another character, but when they get over that, their former love interest develops a crush on them.
Propaganda:
For when you want to shake things up a bit in your “Will They, Won’t They?” subplot but you’re too scared to actually answer right now. Like yeah, relationships can be complicated like that, but this trope usually feels too cheap and contrived to keep me invested. Bonus points if the switch happens in the same episode (i.e. Character A falls out of love with Character B and five minutes later B realizes they’re actually in love with A)

my absolute favourite trope for beauyasha is “Horny Friends With Benefits Gradually & Unwittingly Catch A Horrifying Amount of Feelings, Oh No, The Yearning”
it’s one of my fave romance plots in general but uhh this one is so perfect for Beauregard “Only has one-night stands, horny for Yasha since Day One” Lionett and Yasha “I Cannot Allow Myself To Fall In Love After Zuala but being horny on main is fine because sex isn’t nearly as intimate as Emotional Vulnerability” Nydoorin
#I have one nearly finished WIP in this vein that's been languishing for OVER A YEAR#but now I wanna start a canon adjacent story w this + unrequited love switcheroos feat. Canon Jester Crushes.... fuck#I Don't Have Tiiiiime

tell the people about mica? 👀 saw the tags of ur last reblog and i am Intrigued
aaaaaaaaaaa 🥺
mica is a character from a novel idea im proooooobably gonna try to do for nanowrimo! they are a young adult faery with white eyes, dragonfly wings, and a vein of shimmering silver running down the right side of their face. they are a hereditary general of the fey military (Swarm), and so they've never been called anything other than Mica (civil + military officials in this story all have stone names; they can be granted them as a marker of their entrance into the aristocracy, or born with them like mica). they were raised in the swarm, and take their duty very seriously, and in spite of having already seen many battles by the time the story opens and, well, hangining around soldiers their whole life, they are very introverted, ideologically sheltered, and know little outside of their warrior's way of life.
there's a bit of a romance between them and one of the soldiers from their unit, a faery named Tamias; tam is very extroverted and romanticizes everything, including mica, and when mica defects from the swarm and tam vows to follow them, this solidifies mica's viewing him as a possible special someone/person with feelings for them. after they are assigned by the puppet fey queen's evil advisor to go oversee the massacre of a human town, they start losing faith in their obedient lifestyle and the validity of the crown. they stall for a while, before being lured through the forest to an ancient cursed spear (potentially belonging to a backstory villain, idk yet lol). the spear slowly begins to ideologically twist mica into someone who is more aggressive, less obedient, and much more willing to take risks, and they then resolve to defect from the swarm and face the villain head on. they and tamias break into the faery queen's midsummer revels, believing her to be an imposter, and almost succeed in killing/capturing her before another character, the queen's childhood friend, convinces them that it's her and she's being puppeted. they escape with the queen, but are caught by the villain, and placed into a psychological prison. the spirit of the cursed spear goes with mica, and they have violent, bloody dreams until tamias successfully brings them to a brief moment of peace and wakes them from their dream. my current plan for the ending is for some other characters to bring down the bad guy, but for mica, seized by the spear's violent spirit, to deliver the killing blow, and then repeatedly stab the corpse until the spear breaks, taking a part of mica's own soul with it in destruction. tamias then goes to the queen and attains what he's been looking for the whole plot (officially recognized honor for his dead sister + a courtly stone name of his own); mica begs him to let them stay with him for the rest of their lives, but instead, in their broken state tam picks them up and takes them back to their parents, the swarm generals who birthed them into a military life.
originally i had planned for a really sweet and fluffy ending to mica + tam's story hahaha; im honestly Still debating whether i wanna go w this kinda-tragic one but i think i might like it better this way; mica's position is above tamias for most of the plot + i like the switcheroo @ the end; also i rlly love the "oh my god it was unrequited THE OTHER WAY" trope and want to see how well i can write it myself lol. on a more personal level i think they kinda are a metaphor for what its like as an introvert growing close to an extrovert lol, like so much of the time it feels Really Special but its just another friendship to them which i think has a rlly tragic quality that i'd like to convey w mica's story :')
#ask#sorry this is so long lololol#I STILL NEED A NAME FOR THE EVIL SPEAR BTW.........#gladius (queen's childhood friend) has a shortsword called Hyacinth i wanna name more weapons#TY FOR THE ASK#aaaaa

HAHA, duuuuude 🥺🥺🥺 I would love to write that fic but I have the writing ability of a fish. However I adored all your additions- you literally made it 100 times better. I can literally imagine Obi wan orchestrating all these scenarios where the only appropriate response from anakin would be a hug. Anakin, writing in his journal each night: “dear diary, has Obi wan become more touchy feely these days or am I suffering some sort of touch starved induced fever?” ROM COM GOLD!!!
Perhaps a very eloquent fish? 👀 But totally fair, I'm loving hearing your ideas in ask form too!
Star Wars rom com is all I ever wanted. I was thinking of tropes (I had to look a bunch of them up for that game that went around) and this is basically the ol' unrequited love switcheroo, isn't it? Except that Anakin never stopped being into Obi-Wan, he's just pretending. Just think of all the delightful misunderstandings! Anakin with a diary is adorable and perfectly in character (it's mostly OWK + AS in hearts over and over again) and Obi-Wan having cute hug schemes instead of just asking is also 100% correct.
What are Obi-Wan's hug scenarios? Obviously he fakes being cold, but that's too easy to solve with piles of cloaks and blankets. Anakin comments that Obi-Wan seems to be losing his cloaks even more than usual and Obi-Wan grumbles and accepts his heaps of backups. Somewhere the quartermaster is crying.
#asks#anon#obikin#other hug scenarios:#obi-wan is on fire and only hugs can extinguish him#obi-wan thinks he has lint on his back and refuses to turn around to let anakin check#obi-wan wants to know how wide his shoulders are but all the measuring tapes were thrown out the airlock for some reason
