shadow's character was not "derailed" until the 2010s, in some cases not even then. shth did not kill shadow's character he actually stayed pretty consistent throughout the game (with a few exceptions, most of which are localization problems) and for years onwards

shadow's characterization in sonic chronicles was actually a lot of fun, a long time ago i reblogged a post that said it was awful because i had never played the game before and didn't know any better and i regret it daily because i really really like it actually

shadow's new characterization is NOT "fun in its own way" imo its literally unacceptable and so unbearable it keeps me from revisiting some things he's in

shadow has always been edgy shth didn't change literally anything about his style it just gave him a gun and let him curse

i like his writing more in sonic prime than i did in sonic x and we havent even seen him for that long in prime

i don't like that new writers try to pretend like sonic and shadow were enemies this whole time and are coming to terms with eachother because they literally were not enemies before they changed everything. i think it ties somewhat into the new notion of shadow not having any friends because its kind of hard to have a deathmatch rivalry with a guy you have mutual friends with but i don't like it i don't really think its cute or funny it's just a kick in the teeth to people who cared enough about these characters before they went wacko bizarro twilight zone mode with everything to know that somethings off

i don't really like when people assert that shadow was all polite and calm before shth like in sa2 theres the part where he realizes rouge is trapped and runs back to rescue her, but before he has his flashback his intial reaction is to laugh and keep walking

he was better when humphrey voiced him. i know that means less than nothing coming from the guy who is REALLY normal about david humphrey but he just did his emotions and cadances better idk

i don't like when either official media or fan media gives him weird "but thats my family" feelings about the black arms. probably mostly out of projection (i think its badass that he just kills them like its NOTHING) but they weren't even family to him in the shth endings where he sides with them. black doom sort of acts like that but thats solely because he's attempting to foster a sense of belonging in shadow to further isolate him and continue radicalizing him. why are we acting like its noble or angsty somehow

I find her being locked down in that Loewe partnership to be a bit stifling for her. From what I’ve seen of her pre ambassadorship she’s been in better and more creative looks. And not to be an absolute grouch but I’m so over that silhouette Loewe keep doing and keep putting her in. If they wanted to do the wooden thing I wish they’d committed to it in its entirety and not just the bodice with that same drape skirt attached to it

I know it's considered the worst of the Final Fantasy games, but I've always liked it a lot.

Especially for the characters and the beautiful relationship that the four protagonists have.

What's your reverse unpopular opinion for jiang fengmian

Oh wow, you caught me in your trap, anon!! Okay, I can do this.

While Jiang Fengmian was, like, grown in a laboratory in a big vat marked "guys specifically designed to make least-carpet hate them," I do think he's 1) really interesting, 2) very realistic, and 3) perfectly designed to produce the trio of Jiang Yanli, Jiang Cheng, and Wei Wuxian, who I adore.

I'm always referring back to this interview where MXTX talks about her process, but here's the relevant part:

I think the environment a person grows up in is a very important factor. The parent generation’s joy and sorrow will create an increasingly greater impact on their children... [The parents'] designs are based on the main cast, to contrast or to complete... For example, first, I think of what kind of person Wei Wuxian is. Then, I think of what kind of parents could have such a child. I base his parent’s characters on his character...Looking at it from within the story, it’s that parents will inevitably influence their children. But from a structural writing standpoint, it’s the children that influence the parents.

So Jiang Fengmian exists to produce and explain my faves. Thanks, Jiang Fengmian!

I think MXTX is really observant and specific about familial dynamics, and Jiang Fengmian is extremely recognizable as a specific type of conflict-avoidant dad whose combination of Unprocessed Life Stuff (re: growing up and being unhappy about adulthood—which for him is being a sect leader) and resentment of his wife make him distant with his more challenging child, who to him resembles his wife. I think in some ways that's why people respond strongly to him and to Madame Yu, because they're so recognizable.

Finally, I also think there are a lot of interesting gaps to think about if you want to flesh him out—what actually was going on with Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze? Was his and Madame Yu's marriage always that bad, or did it deteriorate over time, and how? Did he just never want to parent? (There's a brilliant genderswap fic called "you will never need another lover," where he's a woman and Yu Ziyuan is a man, and I find him so much more likeable as a woman who sincerely never wanted to be a parent but couldn't get out of it. Also, male Yu Ziyuan is a total asshole but also a way better husband than male Jiang Fengmian, and so their marriage changes in really interesting ways over the course of the story.) There's a lot of room to develop him in various ways.

I read the TvTropes page, and at a glance it's full of people using "Anti-Villain" to refer to "straightforwardly awful villain who I personally happen to think is pretty neat," or, occasionally, "villain with a semi-realistic motivation." So I'm beginning to suspect that it's one of those terms born out of that vexing need for categorical symmetry rather than a clear-cut case use

I hate how he's reduced to the "mother" of the friend group when really he's the himbo with unexpectedly wise takes. he's giving us the "throwaway" lines of all time!! i adore steve and his character growth across the seasons and i hate seeing him reduced to babysitter when he's so much more than that tbh

Unpopular opinion, Fitpac should stay forever as a slowburn and never get together canioncally - same with 4halo if you even consider them a "slow burn" in comparison

4halo I agree, they should literally never get together, just remain in that weird flirting limbo, because I don't think that it would fit either of their canon characters actually, even if I'm a big 4halo fan, I can't see it working out.

Now fitpac should definitely get to become canon someday, they can take it as slow as they want but I think them becoming canon would be the best for both of them in the long run

Oh yeah that is Aurora James! I prefer her wooden bodice, both are 10/10 as craftsmanship goes but I just prefer how natural it is, and also the fact that it’s her own brand is a big fat slay
