❛ er ❜ great start, man. the question had seemed like flirtation ; had felt like it as well, with the force of stede's gaze levelled 'pon them. but ... edward would hate to be PRESUMPTUOUS. and to be perfectly honest, he hadn't bothered flirting with anyone since jack. ❛ there's lots t'look at. lots to like. ❜ the clothes and otherwise. he vaguely made note of the assistant's entry, of izzy's reluctance and snarling groan ; seemingly dragged to reception for the monotonous task of ed's paperwork.

brown eyes were torn from the man adjacent him and fell instead to the rack of pageantry. fingertips flit through the articles and fell upon a few patterned things : two rompers with button up collars. one navy blue with pink florals. the other pink itself, with pineapples. ❛ these, MAYBE ? i 'dunno, 'm not used to wearing ... colours. ❜ clearly. head to toe black leather had been their look for decades. that's what the label had wanted, after all.

stede kept shooting glances, over at the assumed(?) manager of ed's; he ducks inside one of the dressing booths to shoot a text to lucius----come to dressing room. need your help with a distraction. asap. scowling back at izzy, stede turns his attention fully towards ed, who was examining a dressing gown off the rack. ❝ yes! and that color would suit you well. i see you have an eye, for fine things. ❞ he goes to take the robe off the rack; brushing their hands fleetingly----causing warmth to rise to his cheeks as he turns to put it on the hook by the booth. ❝ any...anything else, catching your eye---? ❞

no sooner did he say the words, was he startled, by a knock; lucius poking his head in the door. ❝ lucius! yes----- ❞ he goes to him, pulling him aside to mutter, just so he could hear: that man there. ed's manager. take care of him. give him a tour. something. turn on your charm. lucius peers around stede, giving izzy a once-over. how hard d'you want me to go? lay it on thick, lucius. stede turns, completely ignoring izzy, moving back over to ed. the younger man moves, to try talking to izzy---trying to get him out the door.

Into the Erlang-verse: Li, Zhao, Yang

-This is something I wrote for fun and reference purposes, back when I was starting to seriously get into Chinese mythology. As such, there is no citations, and is meant to be more of a general introduction to Erlang Shen in pre-modern writings.

(Emphasis on "pre-modern", because, as much as I love the Lotus Lantern + Prequel TV series, it's just a little frustrating to see people taking the shows' version as the end-all-be-all of such a complicated deity, y'know?)

-Anyways, much like Nezha, his Archery Accident Bro, Erlang has what I'd refer to as his "Pop Culture Form": Handsome three-eyed warrior god wielding a three-pronged spear, accompanied by his doggo Xiaotian Quan(Literally "Skyhowler"), going by the surname "Yang", jade emperor's nephew, etc.

-However, The Second Lad is an even messier amalgamation of deities worshiped in different parts of China, even in his supposed "home domain", Sichuan. Here, I'm only gonna talk about the most well-known and significant Erlangs.

(Not even gonna go into the possible Zoroastrian influences and the Dujian thing...)

1. Lord of Sichuan, "Li Erlang"

Key words: Hydraulic engineer, based on a historical official and his son, fierce competitor with Zhao Erlang for the Lord of Sichuan title

Weapons: Knowledge

Power: Can turn into a bull/dragon

"Who's Yang Jian? I've been watching over Sichuan since the Qin dynasty."

Li Bing was a pretty typical case of famous historical figure being worshiped as gods posthumously; born in the Warring States era, this official was put in charge of the Shu Prefecture (modern Chengdu) by King Zhao of Qin, and he was known as the creator of Dujiang Yan, an ancient irrigation + flood control project.

Later Tang legends deified him with a bunch of traditional "Flood-control hero" tropes taken from Yu the Great (heads up JTTW readers, SWK's staff is originally his extendable ruler), mostly the "hero turn into a giant animal" and "fight and subdue local water demons" aspect.

Though he wasn't yet known as an Erlang, or gained a son called Erlang as later folklore would have it, Li Bing's worship began in the Eastern Han dynasty, and he had a long tradition as Sichuan's guardian deity.

Even as later versions of Erlang began to populate, in the Qing dynasty, people of the province were still like "Our Lord of Sichuan is Li Bing/Li Erlang, not Yang Jian, as the novels would have you believe!"  

What made Li Bing and his likely nonexistent son into "Li Erlang" could be traced to the two "warlord states" that occupied Sichuan after the fall of Tang dynasty: both states tried to use the Lord of Sichuan worship to strengthen their own legitimacy, and passed decrees that 1) said Erlang was Li Bing's son and 2) granted both father and son honorable titles, as mentioned in Song dynasty records. 

However, due to the association of Erlang with previous warlord states, the first emperor of Song had reassigned Li Bing a lesser title and taken away his son's title altogether, reducing him to just "God of Guankou", and worshippers were quite disgruntled by the change; there was even a rebellion using the Guankou worship rituals to legitimize itself, a decade after said emperor's death.

Fun fact: when I went to the Two Lord’s Temple (of Li Bing and Li Erlang) in Dujiangyan, even though the god worshipped in the main hall was supposed to be Li Erlang, the plaque next to it still said something like "Li Erlang, also known as Yang Jian"...

Which really shows just how influential FSYY is on popular worship, to the point of overshadowing older incarnations of certain deities.

2. Immortal Master of Illustrious Sagacity, "Zhao Erlang"

Key words: Chief of Jiazhou Prefecture, dragon slayer, No.2 violator of archery safety (first place goes to Nezha)

Weapons: A scribing tablet, slingshot, sword, bow and arrows

Power: Supernatural strength, monstrous giant form

Pets: unnamed white horse, hunting hawks and hounds

"C'mon, my aim isn't that bad! What happened in the Zaju was a one-time thing!"

The prototypical Taoist Erlang, his name, "Zhao Yu"(赵昱) first appeared in a Song dynasty source. At this point, the story of Erlang was mainly defined by two traits: 1) was, or was related to an official in charge of Sichuan in bygone times and 2) Did heroic flood control stuff, probably through dragon-slaying. 

One notable strand of local worship was the "God of Guankou"; historical records mentioned that people sacrificed hundreds and hundreds of goats to him, as well as a regional festival in Sichuan where people played out his confrontation with dragons. It coexisted and entwined with the "Lord of Sichuan" worship, until the Song dynasty.

In typical Song dynasty fashion, the officials decided to give their own official title to this...Erlang/Lord of Sichuan/God of Guankou guy, bringing our titular "Zhao Erlang" into existence.

Also a deified official from the Tang dynasty, his image was more heavily influenced by Taoism (historically popular in Sichuan) and centered around one of its holy places, Mt. Qingcheng, which just happened to be quite close to Dujiang Yan.

Though in the Northern Song dynasty, the state-recognized Erlang was still "Li Erlang", the Taoist Zhao Erlang had proven himself to be a strong competitor by the Southern Song and Yuan dynasty, thanks to a massive amount of opera plays.

First we have SJSSDQ (三教搜神大全, Yuan Dynasty), an encyclopedia of Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian gods, where his traditional backstory as an ascended mortal official was combined with the dragon-slaying feat to nudge Erlang toward a more warrior-esque image, a hunting god who appeared on a white horse with his entourage of hunters.

-We also got the first mention of what would become his six/seven sworn brothers; the "Seven Sages" who jumped into the water to assist him in the dragon fight.

Then we have two Yuan-Ming Zaju plays, "Erlang of Guankou Slays the Jian-jiao"(灌口二郎斩健蛟) and "Erlang Drunkenly Shot the Demon-locking Mirror" (二郎神醉射锁魔镜), in which many traits associated with JTTW's Yang Erlang could already be seen: first, his three-pronged weapon, seven brothers and bow/arrows, second, the naming of his brothers as the "Seven Sages of Mt. Mei" and his ability to shift into a "true form", aka the monstrous giant form he used in JTTW.

(The plot of the second Zaju is exactly like it sounds: Erlang and Nezha had a drunken archery competition, accidentally broke the Demon-locking Mirror and released the Bull Demon King + Hundred-Eyed Demon, and spent the rest of the play doing damage control.)

3. The Little Sage, "Yang Erlang" (JTTW)

Key words: Jade Emperor's nephew, cleaver of Peach Mountain, SWK's true equal in battle

Weapons: Three-pronged, Double-bladed Spear, slingshot, bow and arrows, axe

Power: transformations, Cosmic Body, divine sight/Phoenix Eye(?)

Pets: a celestial Xiquan, literally "Thin Dog"

"First time we met, and that monkey made fun of my origins as a conversation opener. Could you believe it."

The Man, The Myth, The Legend! As I said before, a lot of his traits were inherited from "Zhao Erlang", including his Taoist title, his temple at Guankou, etc.

However, Erlang being Jade Emperor's nephew seemed to be mostly popularized by JTTW: the only other work that might have given Erlang this backstory was The Precious Scroll of Erlang, previously dated to the 1560s, though a Chinese paper published in 2018 proposed a later creation date (1620s).

Much like JTTW Nezha, his backstory was somewhat barebones: we knew from SWK's taunt that his mother was the Jade Emperor's sister, who got chummy with Yang the mortal, gave birth to him, and was presumably locked under the Peach Mountain for that, bc Erlang then rescued her by cleaving it in half with an ax.

(Sounds familiar? The same backstory would later be copied over to Erlang's nephew, in the Lotus Lantern legends)

His other notable feats include falling 2 phoenix with his slingshot, as well as slaying the "Seven Demons of Mt. Mei ''. Out of pride, he chose to remain in Guankou instead of associating with his heavenly relatives, and did not answer to general summons to court from the Jade Emperor, only taking special assignments (听调不听宣).

Apart from his famous fight with SWK, Erlang also appeared in JTTW chapter 63, where, together with his sworn brothers, he helped the pilgrims fight the Nine-Headed Wyrm, son-in-law of Bibo Lake's dragon king. His dog continues to be the MVP in this fight, biting off one of the demon's heads, leaving it wounded and fleeing toward the north sea.

Though the description of his battle with SWK implied that he did have some sort of supernatural sight, at this point in time (Ming dynasty), Erlang wasn't yet depicted with a third eye in artworks and literature.

There are a small amount of evidence that suggest the third eye thing might have shown up in statues of this period, though.

4. Master of the Ninefold Mystic Way, "Yang Jian" (FSYY)

Key words: Disciple of the Taoist sage Yuding, veteran of the Investiture War, Nezha's comrade-in-arms

Weapons: Three-pronged Spear, slingshot

Power: Ninefold Mystic Way, 72 transformations, invulnerable to physical attacks, Samadhi Fire (in FSYY it's on the same level as a D&D wizard's Fireball spell)

Pets: Howling Celestial Dog, unnamed white horse

"I fought a transforming monkey demon too!"

Fun fact: the guy whose name was most often taken as Erlang's "real name" by pop culture was never actually referred to as "Erlang" in his debut novel. Could ya believe it.

Quick, dirty summary of FSYY: kinda like the Chinese Iliad, about the overthrowing of Shang dynasty and its tyrannical King Zhou by King Wu of Zhou, with a dash of Taoist infightings, and almost everyone who died in the fight got revived as gods and became part of the celestial bureaucracy, thus "Investiture of the Gods".

Under the order of his master, the Taoist sage Yuding (literally "jade tripod"), Yang Jian makes his first cameo in chapter 40 to assist his senior, Jiang Ziya, in the fight against the Four Generals of Clan Mo.

A master in the arts of the Ninefold Mystic Way and 72 transformations, he has the same divine title as Zhao Erlang and is considered "A Sage in Flesh" after the end of FSYY.

As such, he's able to survive getting eaten by a monstrous weasel, a metal whip in the forehead, graphic disembowelment, etc. and used his transformation skills for some SWK-style "beating people up from inside their stomachs".

On one very notable occasion, he transformed into a beautiful palace consort to dupe Tu Xingsun ("Earth-traveling Son") and capture him.

Oh, and also, on his way to get Tu Xingsun's master, he ran into this random demon in a lake, who led him into a cave. After he got inside, the demon just disappeared, leaving him with the Three-pronged Two-bladed Spear, as well as some nice bling.

Then two kids burst in, accused him of stealing the bling, and...instantly became his students after learning his name? Yeah that was a weird sidequest.

However, Yang Jian's most iconic battle is probably his fight with Yuan Hong, the White Ape of Plum Mountain...who also practiced the Ninefold Mystics, used an iron cudgel, and were sworn brothers with six/seven demon kings.

Only with the help of Nvwa's magical painting, the Shanhe Sheji Scroll, was Yang Jian able to capture the ape, and subsequently, let Jiang Ziya decapitate him with Sage Luya's Immortal Slaying Flying Knife.

When the Three Demonesses were caught and executed at the end of the book, he was the one responsible for slaying the Nine-headed Pheasant Demoness, which is a neat parallel with JTTW.

His Howling Celestial Dog appears in chapter 47, and is even more of an MVP in fights: 12 immortals and demons have been bitten by this dog, which was "as large as a white elephant and as swift as an owl".

Funnily enough, every time Yang Jian summoned his hound, it is described in the same way as, say, other immortals may summon a flying sword, and my mental image is just him yeeting his giant monster dog at the enemy like you'd throw a Pokeball.

(A list of everyone Xiaotian had bitten in FSYY: Zhao Gongming, his sister Bixiao, Xinhuan, Deng Chanyu, Zhou Xin, Hua Huan, the Winged Immortal, Yuyan, Lv Yue, Yu Hualong, Dai Li the dog demon, the Nine-headed Pheasant Demon.)

Conclusion:

-The way I see it: Li is the Erlang of regional worship, Zhao is the Erlang of Zaju plays, and Yang is the Erlang of vernacular novels, who becomes super popular and overshadows his two predecessors.

-And Erlang's depiction in premodern Lotus Lantern tales is what we in the business call "a whole new can of worms". But that's a series for another day.

A Selection of Mistmas Carols

Ten years ago, I did a Survivorist Christmas cover, and in honor of that anniversary... I decided to make some more! This time we've branched out to some of the other Scadrian faiths too, but I had a lot of fun with these. I hope people enjoy them! Each song has a little lore blurb to go along with it too.

The art backgrounds on these are by @conjchamberlain who created them for our Diceborn series, but was kind enough to let me reuse them for this project too.

Though the inclusion of lyrics in High Imperial evokes an antiquated air, this Survivorist hymn celebrating the life of the Ascendant Warrior is in fact, quite contemporary. Written by notable composer Doxell Venture to commemorate the deeds of his house’s most notable member, this piece was first performed in the Elendel Cathedral in 293 PC. While it is unique among Survivorist hymnary for lacking direct mention of the deeds of the Survivor himself, it remains one of the most popular holiday carols throughout the Basin.

Like many works affiliated with the Pathian faith, neither composer and lyricist of this short hymn are known. The absence of hierarchy or formal clergy of the Path make sourcing historical works like this remarkably difficult, despite its status as the most well known song of the Path in popular awareness.

One of the oldest extant anteverdant songs, this hymn is believed to have been commissioned by the Canton of Orthodoxy in the late 600s of the Final Empire. Its stark lyrics both capture and celebrate the brutal inequality of life before the Catacendre. An additional stanza is notated here which describes a day in which the Lord Ruler will return. Apocryphal testimony sources this final verse to modern day Sliverist cults, but such claims have never been substantiated.

A well documented historical record supports the claim that this hymn describing the fall of the Final Empire as the earliest written work in the Survivorist faith. Its lyrics are believed to have originally been written by an unnamed poet during the turbulent days of the Catacendre itself, but later became the song we know today when it was set to music in the first century PC.

Sakuyoru's Dead By Daylight Verse

This verse is made with Sakuyoru as both a Killer and Survivor. Majority of Killers in Dead By Daylight have their own Survivors involved with their story, but for Sakuyoru, her only enemy has always been herself. This is made clear by this dual positioning.

Sakuyoru as a Survivor dresses according to her Modern Verse, whereas Sakuyoru as a Killer dresses according to her Default Verse.

Killer Subverse:

Darkness and misery has clung to Sakuyoru Xin-Fang since the moment she was born, if not perhaps, before. Molded by the judgement and warfare of her father, whom is the sole reason for her life being as cursed as it is. Her mother could only do so much to support and put back the pieces of a child constantly fracturing from every sharp tone and survival tactic.

She would not know such love and support after the age of seven, when her father killed her mother in the midst of midnight. Ever since then, she was an orphan. Living alone in the wilderness, surviving from the lesson her father enforced. Every waking moment, she feels something sinister in the background, and assumes it to be her father manifested as mental torment. Every time she tried to sleep, only nightmares and terrors came to her, and would awaken to nothing but darkness as her cold blanket in the night.

Sakuyoru should not have been able to live so much as a year on her own, but she was not human. Not entirely. Her mother's predecessors run through every sinew and cell of her body, the evolutionary connectedness of human to nature through the plants that surrounded them. Though, she truly is cursed: Meant to both maim and mend, despite the Fang Family being exclusively healers.

She is the last of her family, both by blood and lineage. She has always been alone, and she has used it to thrive off of, in tandem with vengeance and rage. Every time she should have been cut down, shot through, dismembered... A strange presence made itself known, observing the way she would slowly get back up when she should have bled out or succumb to her injuries. Every scar was a reminder of her perseverance.

In adulthood, after murdering her last remaining family members, she exploited her biological manipulation for her own machinations. She could no longer age, she could not have children, and all of her internal systems were remade and given different roles for living. On the outside, she seemed normal, but every cell and fiber of her being on the inside was far from that.

It was on her 100th birthday that she put her curiosity toward the presence she had assumed to be her father's shadow. The Unnamed One could never be put down so simply as she thought at 16. When one night it appeared again, Sakuyoru exited her abode and sauntered toward the tree line, staring into the darkness – and it stared back. Whatever it was, new she would not be swayed so simply. Her father sowed the seeds of every little thing to keep her from reacting. She was like a still porcelain doll.

It used Sakuyoru's inquisitive nature against her, and she knew what it was doing. The fog that swallowed her forests made every single shadow darker than it normally would be at this time and season, her roses did not react to this presence – giving enough clues as to what this constant stranger is.

Like an apex predator, she stalked forth into the deep fog, where the Realm would come to know The Achromatic Despot.

Killer Perks and Special Ability:

Weapon:

The Thorn Armor is the Primary Weapon of The Despot. It's like a second skin, and blends into the dark. Intended to maim and rend as much as it does protect the body it grows on.

Appears as a hand for basic, but an elongated branch for lunges.

Special Attack: Reap and Sow

Being attacked by The Despot’s weapon applies the Injured Status Effect for 60 seconds, and scratch marks last 10 seconds longer.

Special Ability: Culling Chord

When hit by The Despot, the Survivor becomes marked, and other Survivors become oblivious to the status, activities, and actions of any marked Survivors until they return to the Healthy Health State.

Special Ability: Siren's Lull

The Despot's terror radius is replaced with a haunting hum. The softer and sweeter it sounds, the farther away she is. If The Despot is within 10 meters of a Survivor, the song becomes muffled, then quiet when in 5 meters.

While within 3 meters of a wall or structure, The Despot becomes Undetectable. If she attacks without being spotted, she will let out a piercing scream that deafens Survivors in a 20 meter radius for 5 seconds.

Special Item: Rosaceous Hooks

Hooks in the trial become overgrown in The Despot's signature roses.

When unhooked from Rosaceous Hooks for the first time, the Survivor suffers from Hindered Status Effect until regaining the Healthy Health State. If unhooked a second time, the Survivor suffers from Injured Status Effect for the rest of the trial.

Special Enemy: Despotic Servant

Survivors that have been killed by Memento Mori or hook drop to the ground as a Despotic Servant. Serving The Despot in death.

They will spawn in the spot the Survivor was hooked or killed, and their Aura's revealed to The Despot at all times. They will wear the clothes of the Survivor killed, and behave like Survivors as a means of stealth by pretending to perform actions such as doing generators and interacting with totems or chests, and will appear as though they are crouching. They will pretend to act on a vault of a pallet or window by standing in front of it. These stealth activities only last for 3 seconds before they move again. These are signs that a 'Survivor' is a Despotic Servant.

Despotic Servants roam the trial, and track scratch marks and loud noise notifications. They will move at 5 m/s when stalking another if they are found within 20 seconds of the loud noise notification. If the Survivor makes a quiet action 5 meters near the Despotic Servant, they will investigate the area with 3 seconds of Haste. When in a 2 meter range of another Survivor for more than 10 seconds, they will notify The Despot through Killer Instinct, and remain idle for 15 seconds before moving again.

Despotic Servants can only be stunned or hindered. Upon being stunned or hindered by a Survivor, the Survivor will scream.

Perk 1. Hex: Hypervigilance

Surviving alone has made you one with nature. You perceive everything. Nothing can run, nor hide.

While a Survivor is inside the 8/16/24 meter radius, they suffer from the Exposed Status Effect. This lingers for 5 seconds when the Survivor leaves the radius.

If this Hex Totem remains during the Endgame Collapse, the radius becomes 16/24/32 meters, and grants the ability to kill all survivors within the radius upon being put in the dying state, akin to a Memento Mori.

When the Hex Totem is cleansed or blessed, all Survivors suffer from the Exposed Status Effect for 10 seconds.

Perk 2. Apex Predator

You are above all in the food chain – be them prey or hunter alike.

When in line of sight of a Survivor in the Injured, Deep Wound, or Dying State, you gain the Haste Status Effect for 5/7/9 seconds, moving at 5.5 m/s for the duration.

Apex Predator enters a 10/15/20 second cooldown if a Survivor is out of sight for 5 seconds.

Perk 3. Despotic Vengeance

You persevere through all trials and tribulations brought upon you. Make them pay.

You cannot be stunned, hindered, nor blinded. If a Survivor attempts to Stun, Hinder, or Blind you, the action's effect is inflicted upon the Survivor instead.

Survivor Subverse:

Life for Sakuyoru was almost like any other. Her mother stayed at home in one country, and her father in the one she was born in. The separation was necessary, but not enough. The Yakuza he had been formerly aligned with were not the honorable kind, and tracked down his family to England. The quiet morning would cease the silence with the sound of gunfire coming through the wooden door, only hitting the adult woman inside. Her pale hair stained red, and yet despite the traumatic ordeal, died almost peacefully. Only because she died knowing her youngest child in the home was safe.

Sakuyoru; however, having witnessed the only loving human in her life be taken from her, was subject to mental illnesses brought on by the event. Her albinism was already prone to bullying by peers, but her mental troubles shown through her behavior. All of which was far from supported and tended to by her father, who moved his children back to Japan to reside in his estate. It was just her that stayed within predominantly, so loneliness was her only company while her father kept to his businesses, and her older sibling Gods know where doing who knows what.

Sakuyoru had a tendency to respond to her harassers in public school in a far from healthy manner. Many children who thought she would be easy to mess with would find themselves with broken bones and nastier bruises. Her demeanor toward any person around her was filled with distrust, her only 'friends' being the animals that would come to her willingly. Despite her misanthropic violence, was kind and gentle with plants and animals – they did not judge her, they did not harm her, particularly the crows that would sit by her every day. Watching with their black lightless eyes.

She was known as The Pale Girl by the student body. Faculty knew who her father was, and were always at the ready to help if she needed it – afraid of what would happen if they weren't satisfactory to Sakuyoru. She never asked for anything, though. She had to learn in adolescence how to take care of herself. The only thing her father did in her life was set her up for schooling and therapy, but was rarely physically present.

Sakuyoru only split from her father's estate when she learned of why her mother had been taken from her so early in her life. She resented her father. Refused anything he had to offer. By this time, she was done with college and capable of living on her own, and that's exactly what she did. Wherever she went, the crows followed. She considered them her new family.

Once at her new home, it was meticulously kept and quiet, save for the caws of crows outside on her balcony. All was some semblance of new normalcy for her, at least for almost a year. It was her 21st birthday, October 30th, and Halloween was on the horizon. She spent her favorite holiday with dark and gothic decor, her home smelled like apples and spice, and dried autumn leaves hung on string around the doorways.

That night, after everyone had finished their celebrations, she set up a ritual dedicated to prosperity and peace for the remainder of the year. A neat circle was in the middle of her bedroom, with candles lit and a small bell at the end of a silk string in her hand.

The energy in her room was heavy, and what light was cast from the candles dared not reflect off the walls. They flickered violently, but Sakuyoru would not know this, as her eyes were shut. Only opening in alarm when the candles were swiftly snuffed out by the darkness encroaching the circle in a deep black fog. All she saw before being vanishing, was a single black crow – staring back at her. Knowingly.

All was cold. Awakening on her back in the middle of dark forests, where in the distance was a campfire, and a few shadows of people surrounding it. She did not approach to join, nor ask questions about where she was and how it came to be. Even in this place, far from home, the crows flocked to her. Like always, she kept to herself. Always quiet, and never made herself readily known. She stayed on the outskirts, just on the border of what was safe and what wasn't, but can see the campfire clearly.

Strangely, she found this place more comforting than the world she always knew.

Survivor Perks:

1. Boon: Hypervigilance

An affliction of anxiety claims you - you trust nothing and no-one, not even yourself.

Press and hold the Active Ability button on a Dull or Hex Totem to bless it and create a Boon Totem.

Soft chimes ring out in a radius of 24 meters.

All Survivors and the Killer benefit from the following effects when inside the Boon Totem's radius:

An aura of 8/12/16 meter radius around the totem protects Survivors inside from Killer Instinct, Aura reading, and Exposed Status Effect.

You gain the ability to heal yourself without a Med-Kit, but is significantly slowed when around other Survivors.

If you are the only survivor alive, all Action speeds increase to 110%, and gain 4.5 m/s without suffering from the Exhausted Status Effect.

3. Improvise

You are intelligent and resourceful, able to create with what you have.

Press and hold the Active Ability button on a Dull or Boon Totem to move or hold it.

If there is an active Boon on the carried totem, soft chimes ring out in a radius of 24 meters.

Press and hold the Special Ability button on a Dull or Boon Totem to move and/or hold it after a Difficult Skill Check. While holding the Dull or Boon Totem, you cannot run for 6/4/2 seconds. If you lose a health state while holding the Dull or Boon Totem, it will break.

Over the years, River has taken up many new aliases out of necessity, Sister Cantica, Miss Spritz, River Allegro. finnick became panem’s youngest victor in the history of the hunger games during the 65th annual game by winning at just fourteen years old. although finnick was a career trainee, expected to be chosen for volunteering at the age eighteen, he was reaped early and went unreplaced by a career of age. he and inoh lukas became the tributes for the 65th games, where they would be mentored by former victors mags flanagan and wade gillard.

finnick's success is attributed to to a combination of his physical combat skills and his popularity among capitol citizens due to his attractiveness. he’s often described as being extremely handsome and chiseled, even godlike. the latter kept him well supplied during the games through the form of sponsor gifts. another notable moment in the games history also occurred during his games as he was gifted a trident by the people of district four, the most expensive gift ever given in the arena. 

following his victory, finnick returned to district four and was given his own victor home. shortly after he was also assigned a private teacher from the capitol and his hobby was declared to be poetry. upon turning sixteen, he was forced into prostitution by president snow— something unbeknownst to the general public who believe him to be a heartbreaker and promiscuous.

finnick occasionally mentors games, most notably in the years 68, 71-74. he was reaped again for the 75th hunger games as part of the quarter quell which reaped from existing victors. around the time of the 75th games he aligned himself with the rebellion and would be part of the plot to break katniss everdeen out of the games.

Headcaneons for Hel.

It’s not a constant in her day to day life, but as neuropathy and the ensuing muscle weakness plays havoc on her mobility, she’s been known to use her cane on bad days. Some days she is more ambulatory than others, and some days she’s in a bad enough way she doesn’t even try to leave her room.

As her left side is the one afflicted, she handles her cane using her right hand. This incidentally frees up her dominant hand on days when she needs some help.

I have had suggestions ranging from it being a sword cane to her simply being Unnamed Barrel Bastard’s true mother in spirit by having it be weighted. Other possibilities include the potential for Hel using it to store small objects or vials via a hollow segment near to the top of the cane. All I know for sure is Hel being Hel, there’s a secondary purpose to the thing.

It hasn’t been a lifelong aspect of her condition, but became necessary in her early adulthood. An inauspicious climate and payback for years of overexertion as a child hastened a lot of degeneration and other issues regarding her nerves.

She’s gone through a number of them in her lifetime, from ancient walking sticks to the modern age. It’s her most recent one that’s most impressive so far. The base is made of wood from one of Yggdrasil’s roots, which has been scorched a fine black by no less than Nidhoggr. The cane as a whole is shot through with silver for both durability and artistic choices, the handle flanked by tiny moonflowers of the same metal on either end while the rest of the handle is carved to resemble their stems intertwining. Contrary to the image I chose, Hel’s cane has a Fritz handle rather than the gentle u shape of the Tourist handle. It remains in a near perpetual state of winterization to account for the hostile environment of Helheim.

Yes it has an ice tip. Yes I’m making it more substantial than in mere mortal canes, because Hel deserves a formidable ice tip of silver that can be used as a viable threat, if only for a minor pricking.

It’s enhanced by runes, like everything Hel has ever been able to customize in her life. I’m still debating if they are carved into the wood itself or shaped in silver along the surface, but it’s definitely modified via what few magics she possesses.

Yes, she will still have the cane regardless of verse. The only thing that will change is the whys of her using it depending – In most verses it’s due to her chronic condition, where in a verse like TMA or XV where she’s less affected by a rot-equivalent, she is instead dealing with the aftermath of a past injury. We don’t do ‘oh but she’s totally able bodied in this verse!’ around here. We just have to come up with different ideas for the inclusion of this aspect.

You'd think with all the analysis of Goncharov and how it criticises the bible and the sanitised versions of stories modern Christianity presents, (the discussion of judas and Jesus kissing on the mouth, the apple, etc) someone would talk about how they pay homage to how other religions influenced it.

While Goncharov is stuck in Christian myths Katya is characterised with Greek myths, Obviously there's the pomegranates with Sofia, but nobody is talking about the BOX? The secret box she wasn't supposed to find or ever open. It's Pandora's box.

For Katya it's disguised as a first aid kit and is filled with Goncharov's letters and while it's potentially just documents if you pause they're love letters to a "unknown" person. (It's andrey). This scene is usually skipped over as just introduction to Katya and Goncharov's rocky relationship, "you're keeping secrets from me?" But it sets off the events of the movie.

Sofia has this too, and is arguably more of a Pandora figure, being made up by forces bigger than herself, but it's Katya who opens the boxes for her, (the jewelry boxes, etc) and when Sofia does open the box with the gun in it, it's Katya who puts her fingers over Sofia's and helps her close it. The jewelry box is easily greed vs envy, or just general desire, the gun being violence, but the First aid kit was what lead to Katya's downfall.

In the first aid kit is evidence that Goncharov can express love, and it gives Katya the worst evil to have: False hope, the idea that Goncharov can be that way if not with her than with someone else. It's why she's so shaken when she sees inside Andry's wallet at the bar. She knows the notes were for him!

If she'd never opened the first aid kit she never would have stayed, thus by opening the box she doomed herself.

Sofia eating the pomegranates isn't subtle and forces her to spend some time in the underworld with Katya, in this way she's more of a Persephone type figure.

Now there can be an argument made that Katya is more of a Traditional Judaism type thing, (pomegranates again, the way she rebuffs Sofia a few times before finally letting her into the mafia type stuff like how converts are traditionally rebuffed a few times, etc) but I think that's a conversation for someone more well versed than I.

Now "Ice pick joe" and Valery Mikailov's comments are really juicy, going all the way back to the epic of Gilgamesh, predating both of them. With Goncharov getting gut punched to the floor and being told "she made you a person and this is how you repay her?" Talking about the unnamed woman who tamed Enkidu from his beastly form and taught him everything only to be discarded for Gilgamesh. This is interesting because you'd think Goncharov would be Gilgamesh in this tale. But out of the two of them, while Goncharov knows he has no time, it's Andrey constantly fighting for a stay of death, and ultimately Goncharov pays the price for him, after the small debate scene where after the death of (spoiler but his nickname is litterally "the bull" ) the mobsters decide which of the pair has to die.

These two characters even quote from the epic "he breathes and there is death." ;"let your belly be full..." ; "You are the door through which the cold gets in. You are the fire that goes out." (Though that one unintentionally implies he's a jilted lover👀 I don't think there's anything there for once.)

Other side characters may have more, but that's all I've found so far. And I think it really displays how these two are the least conflicted, more dedicated to their personal morals, more back to their roots kind of characters.
