DHMIS Rant

I feel like the DHMIS series was created to conform to a guideline of "things to have in your show for preschoolers," and then the creators did everything according to the instructions but wildly wrong on purpose. Like, "Have a scene where one of the characters turns to the audience and asks them how THEY feel about this episode's topic," "if you're teaching a lesson about a type of wrongdoing like bullying or lying, show one of the characters lying or bullying someone, then show them learning to not do that," etc.

In the Death episode, Yellow Guy's behavior constantly reminded me of the episode of Sesame Street where Big Bird learns about death. The thing they have in common is that the characters are used to show how children may think and feel after the loss of someone they know. The thing DHMIS DOESN'T have, however, is other characters HELPING Yellow Guy deal with his feelings. In the Friendship ep, it's kind of like a bullying episode, except all of the characters are absolutely terrible, and then at the end, they DO learn and change, they just aren't any better.

I genuinely love children's media because of how it has to be crafted very carefully to help developing minds. I look at children's media critically not because "is this storytelling good enough for me" but because I want children growing up to have media that is willing to teach good core social and intellectual skills, even if said skills are basic and such educational value is *beneath* adults (peak "it's not made for you," btw.)

So naturally, seeing a show for adults fully aware of and intentionally parodying these aspects of children's media unironically *delights* me to no end

okay so, the idea of letting Nikolai go is absurd to me. However, I can see how there could be some strains in a relationship with him.

if we remain in a canon situation, I'd say that the biggest thing that could come between you two up to the point of almost divorce is his ambition and dedication to Ravka

Nikolai is a strategist and the thing he wants more is seeing Ravka free and thriving and he'd do anything to make that a reality

so, he'd be plenty busy

busy to the point that you'd go months without seeing him

whether he's in Ravka working on his projects with David and Nadia or he's in another country on a diplomatic visit

of course, he has invented flying ships and all but those kinds of journeys still are long and tiring

however, since you are in the picture, I'd like to believe that Nikolai would try to find a balance between his country and his love

if not simply for the fact that he loves you and he loves being with you

if he's married you, there's a reason. right?

so, I feel like whenever he's back from a long trip away he'd take some time to spend it with you. First days in between the sheets and then doing some of your favourite things together.

just to spend some quality time with you

that's until he slips away more and more to take care of something

at first, it's a couple of hours before dinner

then he misses dinner entirely but spends the afternoon together

then only mornings together

until it comes the time you wake up and his side of the bed is cold

of course, you were aware of the life he led

his ambition and dedication were two of the things you loved most about him

but you missed him

he was gone so much that it didn't feel like a relationship anymore

it seemed like a free trial for widowhood

you had confronted him about this

many times

but he was still the King of Ravka and he had responsibilities he couldn't forfeit

and despite his best intentions, it seemed that they didn't match with his marriage

and you understood that. his role and the many things he had to take care of. really.

but you were tired of being alone a feeling unimportant

so, one day you decided to wait for him. Nikolai was the first to wake up and the last to fall asleep.

but that night, you waited for him. sat in your bed, hoping he'd come too late

when he did step into your room, he was surprised to see you awake. at first, he was delighted. he missed you too and the idea of being able to spend some time with you brought him endless joy

however, he soon noticed the expression on your face, your arms crossed on your chest and he understood that whatever reason had made you wait for him, wasn't anything good.

as much as it broke your heart to say the words, you told him what you had been thinking about for months now.

"this marriage is not working out for me anymore."

Nikolai's heart broke. truly shattered at your words.

he knew he'd be walking on a fine line and it was only a matter of time before you'd snapped again

but he never thought it'd come to this

Nikolai hated it. he hated the fact that he had been such a shitty husband that you now wanted to have nothing to do with him

he tried to change your mind, promised that he'd do better, that he loved you and you were his whole heart even though he'd done a shitty job to show you.

but you knew that despite his words were genuine, his promises were empty.

and you were simply done. you couldn't take any more of this.

when he understood that he had pushed you too far, Nikolai relented. He accepted your decision and told you that he'd take care of it.

in the meantime, you went away.

there was no reason for you to stay. you were alone anyway so staying just to sleep in the same bed as he felt ridiculous

the time apart was agonizing for both of you. unironically, knowing that he was just a few feet away made it easier for you to bear the loneliness. And Nikolai?

Well, he had forgotten how to function. The absence of your presence affected him more than he would have thought. To the point where he could only think of you and how he couldn't lose you. The divorce wasn't official yet and he was already miserable.

So he took some time off and he joined you.

Again, he asked for forgiveness. pleaded for you to give him a second chance and if not, to at least allowed him to spend the days before signing the papers together.

and you agreed. you agreed because you had missed him so much. because you still loved him.

those remaining days were spent in utter denial. neither of you acknowledged the truth of your situation but unspokenly decided to make the most of it.

and saints, it did nothing but remember why you had fallen in love with each other and decided to spend the rest of your lives together in the first place.

when the time was almost up, neither of you wanted for it to end.

but the problem remained: you couldn't go back to the same routine

but letting Nikolai go wasn't possible neither

so you talked to him. explained your reasons and your motives and that above all you loved him

he felt so much relief in knowing that there was still a tiny chance of making this right

he renewed his promises of being a better husband, of changing his work schedule so that he could be more present.

he had even handed you a sheet where he had drafted his new schedule and well, it was completely different

of course, you knew that there would be times where he'd be inevitably busier but as long as he made an effort, you'd be fine with it

and so you agreed, you gave him a second chance and you were proud to say that Nikolai was living up to his words

and you were happier than ever

Detective Conan Movie Ranking

Hey so while my laptop has been down I binged all 23 main Detective Conan movies and was gonna give a brief review and breakdown

Favorite (9-10) one of my favs High Medium (6-8) enjoyed, probably will watch again Low Medium (3-5) not bad but forgettable, might rewatch but maybe not Ugh (0-2) just bad, I don’t want to see it again

1. The Time Bombed Skyscraper (1997) [6] Relatively simple bombing plot but some good character action and development. Not as good as I remembered.

2. The Fourteenth Target (1998) [5] Criminal is targeting people close to Kogoro, some good scenes but not my favorite. Liked it more than I remembered which wasn’t a lot.

3. The Last Wizard of the Century (1999) [9] The Kaitou Kid is after a Russian Fabergé Egg. A true classic, one of the best. This whole movie is nostalgic with a good mix of action and heart. I love it every time I watch it. 

4. Captured in Her Eyes (2000) [3] Ran witnesses a murder attempt and loses her memory. Pretty bland and kind of a dumb plot, not inherently bad just not my thing. Expectations were low.

5. Countdown to Heaven (2001) [7] Several key figures in the creation of a building are murdered. The turn where DC movies became a little more action oriented, fairly good mystery, good effects and good character development. Liked it more than I remembered.

6. The Phantom of Baker Street (2002) [9] A rogue AI traps a bunch of kids in a virtual reality 19th century London to solve the Ripper case. As a Sherlock fan this is near and dear to me, like #3 its a warm, comforting movie. Always makes me smile to watch.

7. Crossroad in the Ancient Capital (2003) [5] Conan, Heiji and the rest are in Kyoto when a slew of antique smugglers are murdered, explores Heiji’s first love. Its okay, had some good deductions and bonding btw Heiji and Shinichi but the plot was a bit boring. 

8. Magician of the Silver Sky (2004) [9] The Kaitou Kid is planning on stealing a jeweled ring aboard a plane. Unironically probably my favorite, I just love this one so much for the half batshit/half emotional plot. Best use of Kid in the movies. 

9. Strategy Above the Depths (2005) [7] A series of murders occur on a luxury liner. It takes a fairly simple plot and spins a genuinely compelling murder mystery with som good character moments for Ran, Conan and Kogoro. Liked it more than before. 

10. Private Eye’s Requiem (2006) [8] With their loved ones held hostage at an amusement park, Kogoro, Conan and Heiji need to solve a cold case. The plot is a bit weak but this movie has the second best use of Kid and is hysterical from a meta POV. Love it every time.

11. Jolly Roger of the Deep Azure (2007) [4] One a small island, the group chases after treasure hunters and potentially pirates gold. Such a fun premise that ultimately falls flat but it’s got it’s enjoyable moments. Honestly couldn’t remember any of this movie.

12. The Full Score of Fear (2008) [6] Prior to a big music concert in Japan, a famous singer is targeted. The plot was kind of weird and forgettable but idk, I genuinely liked this. Definitely the calmest of DC movies, kind of a nice break from the usual chaos.

13. The Raven Chaser (2009) [9] A serial killer is on the loose and Conan finds himself competing for clues against the Black Organization. Another classic, a tight, fascinating plot, probably the highest plot related stakes in the movie verse. 

14. The Lost Ship in the Sky (2010) [7] The Kaitou Kid targets a jewel from an airship targeted by bio-terrorists. Kid is a little bit too bastard in this one tricking Ran like that but the plot is pretty interesting and has some nail-biting moments. 

15. Quarter of Silence (2011) [4] A train is bombed and the investigation takes them to a snowy village where an unsolved case resurfaces. Again, has some good moments and good visuals but overall was pretty forgettable. I barely remembered it. 

16. The Eleventh Striker (2012) [5] Soccer stadiums are being bombed and its a race against time in the midst of final matches. Same as above, good moments, good action but kind of boring. I liked it slightly more than when I first watched it.

17. Private Eye in the Distant Sea (2013) [1] A spy has been identified onboard a Japanese naval vessel with promises of more murder and mayhem. I was so bored throughout this entire movie and the plot was boring and meandering and didn’t make much sense. 

18. The Dimensional Sniper (2014) [3] A disgruntled American ex-sniper targets those who wronged him. Japan counters with their own sniper. Centralized on American military culture, it focuses on precision shooting with some nice effects but the plot is laughably bad.

19. The Hellfire Sunflowers (2015) [7] The Kaitou Kid targets van Gogh’s Sunflowers but is he becoming murderous? This one is kind of wild but in a fun way. The criminals motivation is baffling but a morally ambiguous Kid and Kid/Conan interactions are delightful. 

20. The Darkest Nightmare (2016) [8] A Black Org member steals a list of all the spies in the BO but loses her memory and she must decide if she wants to go back. Another heavy BO movie, it’s both poignant with crazy, physics defying action scenes. Really enjoyed it. 

21. The Crimson Love Letter (2017) [7] A Karuta card tournament is being threatened while Kahuza battles a girl in cards for Heiji’s love. This one I hadn’t seen before and it was very interesting, Kazuha got the well deserved spotlight along with some fascinating Japanese culture. 

22. Zero the Enforcer (2018) [1] Amuro accuses Kogoro of bombing a building leading to a legal and physical battle of wits and will. I..... I legit was so lost half of this movie. It jumped around wildly and borderline made no sense. Also I’m just not an Amuro fan so I couldn’t dismiss its flaws like I can with Kid movies. 

23. The Fist of the Blue Sapphire (2019) [2] Kaito Kid targets a sapphire in Singapore during a karate tournament and kidnaps Conan. This is the exception that proves the rule, the only Kid movie I legit didn’t like. Its so nonsensical and Kid again is too bastard to be likable. What even was the plot?

Honestly I never really expected the next relative(s) we’d meet would be Tulip’s of all people, but I’m definitely not complaining. About time we got new content possibly involving her that doesn’t have anything to do with pranks or Dennis (I do like Dennis tho btw)

I genuinely didn’t either. I was expecting us to have met Rowan’s younger brother by now. But if we haven’t met him within the first five or so chapters, then it may be safe to assume that he’s not going to make an appearance. At least not as a conventional Hogwarts student that we can befriend and play gobstones with. I hope he does make an appearance though, at some point or in some way. Meanwhile, the character who’s family I was most hoping to see is Merula’s parents. Hell, there’s a lot of potential there, Jam City, if you were by any chance thinking about #HiringMe. We now know that R has agents within the Ministry, and Merula is their spy. They could easily pull some strings to arrange an early release for the Snydes. Just saying, it’s something to think about. 

But likewise, so is Tulip having family in the Ministry, where R has infiltrated. And maybe it will be connected to the plot, maybe it won’t be. But either way, I never expected to meet members of her family. It wasn’t even high up on my list of hopes because I basically resigned myself a while ago to accept that Tulip would never get focus again. But hey, in this instance I am delighted to be proven wrong. I too, love Dennis, and her unironically caring about her pet and treating him as an equal is one of the details that make me respect Tulip so much...but on the other hand, you’re right. Her personality has been reduced to just being the prankster who has a toad. She is so much more than that.

So let’s talk Banana Split. 

I did this mini review thing with Dylan’s last film (if you’re into crazy hot crazy boys - check out my review here) - and I’m not going to get super detailed into Banana Split as I did with that one - but needless to say, this will be a video and picture heavy review - because look at him. *looks down*

Before I get into the nitty gritty - I just have to say - THIS FILM WAS ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL. I adored it - and probably not for the reason you think I would ... it’s true that the very very best time to be a Dylan fangirl was late 2017 and that December was when Dylan packed up Magnus and headed up to Syracuse to film with Hanna and Liana- but it’s not just about his pretty hair and his pretty face and his pretty hands. It’s not. I promise. 

Let’s talk about the good of Nick and April’s relationship. They were sweet high school sweethearts. They were each other’s firsts. They had literally nothing in common - save a friendship with Ben (who is absolutely hilarious) - and that built up common ground of growing up together, same town, same school, same life. It’s actually addressed in the first real scene in the movie - other than those things - they really don’t have anything in common. 

But they’re happy - for two years. 

Sharing baths with your high school boyfriend - but talking about Dumbledore and horcruxes? This is the epitome of hilariousness. It was part of a montage meant to show us their tender moments. I mean, they dated for two years. Nothing Nick has with Clara could compare to two years of this kind of build-up, right? 

Continuing with that montage - I will never look and lemurs and pandas the same way. Honestly - while Nick is rutting away - telling her she’s his lemur? I nearly DIED of laughter. But I mean, get it. Kink same not kink shame. 

And let’s take a brief segue to talk about April’s sister Agnes. SHE has a crush on Nick too (of course she does) - and she is HILARIOUS. Whether she’s telling her sister to suck my dick/kiss my ass (their poor mother eventually has to lay down the law about keeping their mouths away from their respective genitals) - or she’s feeling up Nick under the table (making him give her mother and his girlfriend THIS expression) - Agnes was a HIGHLIGHT. SO funny. She’s like 11 years old. Poor Nick.

But then they broke up. And it was painful. You see - they were graduating from high school and April got accepted to Boston College. Nick got accepted to UCSB. They didn’t talk about it - and then they both cried and broke up. It was hard to watch. When they discussed it later - it was even harder to watch.

It was HYPOTHETICAL, APRIL! *cough*

Anyway - after the breakup, Nick moved on. Clara was SO clearly a rebound - and he certainly had a good time with her - sex on the beach - sex in a birthday party hat (aside: notice how the women in the sex scenes in this film are covered up? I LOVE that they went that direction. This is not a misogynistic film in ANY way. But I digress.) - They really do seem like they have a good time together - but it was definitely MORE for Clara that it was for Nick. Definitely.

AND we were talking about SprouseHands here on tumblr the other day - I offer this picture as evidence that it obviously runs in the family. YAY genetics. You know what they say about big hands! (... big gloves ha ha ha).

ANYWAY - unfortunately - April and Clara kinda accidentally meet at a party - and find out that they actually have a TON in common and instead of hating each other, they become best friends - on the sly without telling Nick.

And without letting mutual friend Ben tell Nick either. Which is actually kind of a big thing - because Ben is Nick’s bestie - and he hates lying to his friend. But it’s also hilarious - so roll with it. (in the below scene right after this, the girls take their birth control pills together... because they both have alarms to remind them and they are completely bonkers. lol).

They even have secret code names on their phone (George Clooney and Brad Pitt respectively) and it ALL comes to a head when Nick realizes that he misses April - thinks about her all the time - and breaks up with Clara when he thinks that April is going home from a party with Ben (she does and there is weird bushes kissing but they both agree it was weird and agree to never do it again). 

ANYWAY - then the crap hits the fan and Clara goes all #friendsoff with April - throwing a slushee at her head that misses and hits her boobs - and they’re both miserable - and they both want their best friend back. 

It’s funny because neither is really that miserable about Nick. 

His storyline concludes with him telling off April for being the bad guy in this whole thing (she was) - and him making up with his best friend (after sucker punching him). Nick was the sexy lamp in this story - and there is no way around that. It’s a delicious departure from most films like this. 

ANYWAY - the crux of the film is that April and Clara are best friends. And they eventually make up - and it’s adorable and sweet and I LOVED it. The scene below is literally me and MotherMaple btw - I love her but I don’t want to bang her. Ha ha ha.

So yes. Was this a great movie? It TOTALLY was. I will watch it again and again. It was delightful and funny and heartwarming (as heartwarming as you can get when the mains continually make poor decisions, get drunk a lot, get high a lot, and make more poor decisions. 

But I love it for not being a typical romancey movie. Like I said - no one gets Nick at the end (except for Ben - who is an awesome and funny friend) which is a good thing because he deserves to meet a great girl at UCSB who also loves Carly Rae Jepson (unironically) - and the girls are happy to have their long-distance best friendship and that’s awesome too.

I definitely recommend.

BECAUSE I’M NOT POPULAR, I’LL READ WATAMOTE: CHAPTER #159

Another day, another chapter of Watamote to fill that hole in your heart.

The suspension arc continues on, and in what seems to be a reflection of characters’ emotions, it’s a slower chapter that on the surface, doesn’t offer much in terms of “progression”. Thankfully, my overly analytical mind is here to pick up all the delightful subtleties of our cast, and pick apart the unexpected, but welcome direction this series has set itself up to move towards. All aboard the Tomoko Train! 

Chapter 159: Because I’m Not Popular, I’ll Still Be Suspended

Yeah, that figures. Suspension becomes a lot less stressful when you realize you’re too bored to be stressed. 

Not much else to say other than the lighting in this shot is absolutely gorgeous, ya’ll.

Sorry...I was distracted by Yoshida wearing a tie. By all accounts, it should not look as good on her as it does. Too bad we only get it for like 1 1/2 panels, but I’ll take what I can get.

I sure do love these unexpected pairings that get thrown our way from time to time. They may not be the matchups we wanted, but they’re sure as hell the ones we’ll undoubtedly love.

Tomoko at it again with the sick comebacks.

It may just be out of respect to her friend Komiyama, but I’d like to think that Itou secretly(?) would like to see Komi and Tomoko become closer. A true (friend)shipper on deck.

Ah, Itou. If nothing else, your friendship with Komiyama is the real deal if you can admit to all her lunacy.

I can’t help but love how Komiyama’s whole identity is 80% related to her glasses. No surprise since its a given fact that all meganekko girls are either super pure, or super perverted, and Komi has the distinct honor of being both.  

Good luck, Itou! Just play the Lottes theme song and you're guaranteed to bring at least one person to tears.

I wasn’t sure if Tomoko fully cleared up the whole “Tomoki is my brother” thing in the groping chapter, but the implication here is that Yoshida still doesn’t know. This is building up to what will surely be a hilarious revelation.

Guess we don’t have to worry about adding Itou into the Tomokibowl, huh? That would’ve been such a trainwreck. Makes you wonder who’s Itou’s type though...

As in, “Are you doing well?” or “Well, how are you?”. C’mon, Yuri, you gotta dial down the tsundere-ness and give your favorite idiot a little more context than that. 

Damn, Nemo was right on the money, wasn’t she? Even over LINE, she’s not afraid to play dirty.

Btw, I love how Tomoko’s expression doesn’t change at all while looking through the messages. Like her face is frozen from processing so many slaps in the face at once. 

I think this is the first Tomoko has been genuinely unnerved by Katou’s (s)mothering. Getting spoiled is a hot fantasy the first couple times, Tomoko. But once it starts bleeding into your everyday life, that’s when it starts getting a little creepy.

Let’s be honest. We all know who this is, right? 

Side note: How did she get Tomoko’s LINE number?

I wanna say it’s another Mako case where Okada sent her a message because of Nemo’s influence. Poor girl is falling down the rabbit hole.

Oooooh, Katou’s getting special treatment. In her defense, I don’t think it’s necessarily that Tomoko likes her best or anything. For one, Katou the only one whose message was fairly normal. But also, it’s easy to send a quick reply to someone you’re not as close with. Logically speaking, Tomoko would likely prefer to send more detailed responses to Yuri and Nemo because she’s closer to them. And she’ll probably ignore Ucchi entirely. 

Of course, logic has no place between girls fighting for dominance.

The first time we get to see Katou’s inner thoughts and...it’s nothing special.

I wasn’t expecting to see a monologue of deep-rooted insecurities or anything. That’s not this series’ thing. If anything, that mundaneness works to Katou’s advantage because it shows that while she may be incredibly attractive on the outside, she’s just a regular person with simple concerns on the inside. If they’re really going to take Katou’s affection on Tomoko into romantic territory, it’s a good place to start.

The Cuck Sisters have graduated into the Ghosted Sisters.

I’m sure Katou isn’t trying to arrogant about being the only one to get a reply. I mean, anyone would have a bit of an ego boost from that. 

But I’m sorry, Katou. There’s just one small thing you have to realize...

...finding out that your girl was out seeing other people is the initiation for entering the Tomoko harem.

Poor Itou. Girl was just minding her own business and now she finds herself in the middle of the moshpit. 

On that note, I absolutely love the composition of this panel. Even though the line of sight is directed at Itou, Katou’s stance draws in your full attention. Even more amazing is how having these six specific people in the frame adds to the overall intensity. We having Tomoko’s old friends, new friends, and acquaintances all together for the same discussion, and it really emphasizes just how much Tomoko’s influence has affected the whole classroom dynamic.

Small tidbit, but I appreciate that Yuri asked about Yoshida, too. Those two haven’t had many scenes alone together lately since the pachinko parlor moment, and it would sure be nice to more of their relationship outside of Tomoko. 

Ucchi’s teleportation powers always gets a good laugh out of me. I also like how the very first thing she asks is if Tomoko’s creepy, like she needs that confirmation to validate even being there. Girl needs to start coming up with better excuses.

Having Ucchi and Futaki in the same panel always feels so unreal to me. I feel like if the two of them starting talking to each other, the universe would implode upon itself. 

Ucchi:

I like the direction they took this. It would have been very easy for Komiyama to pretend she doesn’t care a la tsunderism. But nope. Komiyama only has a mild interest in how Tomoko’s doing, letting Yuu act as a proxy for them. Even if Tomoko and Komiyama don’t care much about each other, their history belies this odd level of intimacy.

Alright, alright, you got me Nico Tanigawa.

...Poor Minami. 

I think its a merit to the mangaka’s storytelling skills that we can easily infer that Mako’s talking about Yoshida. Between Mako being who she is, Yoshida being who she is, and their growing friendship gaining attention, who else could it be?

That’s...kind of sad, honestly. We’ve seen several times just how clingy Minami is to her (one-sided) friendships, but never have we seen her sound so dependent on others. It’s been hinted at before, but being a bitch is the one thing Minami’s good at, and she might actually know that. She may act stuck-up on the outside, but the fact that’s she’s so upfront about it may actually mask a bit of an inferiority complex.  

Curse you, Nico Tanigawa, for making Minami a three-dimensional character with legitimate wants and fears.

I’m glad Mako isn’t mentioning her by name. She knows Minami enough that outting her friend will lead to harm.

Character development for Yoshida, whaaaaaat?

Let’s face it. The trio of Tomoko, Yuri, and Yoshida are all slackers in some way, shape, or form. It makes sense that Yoshida would be the last of them to put any real effort into her future. Since she isn’t the type to make personal changes just because someone told her to, the reasonable way to make Yoshida understand is through observance. As thick-headed as she is, Miss Yoshida is not about to be left in the lurch while her buddies move on without her.

Between this and my recent watching of Aggretsuko S2 (shameless plug!), it’s become apparent to me that getting a driver’s license isn’t as “mandatory” there as it is in my country. I’d imagine it has to do with the work environment there being so focused on public transit, but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Tomoko actually makes a solid point there, though I get the feeling she’s imagining Yoshida driving getaway cars for the yakuza or something. 

Or, you know, her chauffeur. 

Ignoring the somewhat obvious advertisement for a vehicle that I’m sure was blacked out in the original version, this is totally setting itself up for the next arc of Watamote. As summer vacation gets closer and closer, I was wondering just how Tomoko was going to spend it. She obviously can’t stay at home the whole time like she did in the past, so I was thinking she’d end up doing things with her friends like working part-time jobs, going to a festival, or in this case, a road trip.

Bring on the Road Trip Arc!

Oh, I get it. Tomoko did the whole “min-na” thing that slice-of-life moe anime girls do when talking about their friends, right? 

Traitor.

I’m joking, of course, but only partially. It’s clear to us all that Tomoko feels like she’s betraying a part of herself for saying something so bubbly. It was a direction I had anticipated to some degree when Tomoko began making self-deprecating jokes about becoming a normie. It was always in that “haha, like that could ever happen” tone, but it was only a matter of time before Tomoko started to become the mask. It’s scary to think you might subconsciously be changing a core part of yourself, and that realization is something Tomoko will eventually have to come to terms with.

At least we get her most adorable, genuine blush ever thanks to this.

Damn, expulsion for driving a vehicle? What’s with this school and it’s beef with having your own set of wheels?

Ah, saving up for a car. The first glimpse into Tomoko’s (and everyone else’s) efforts at adulting. 

To get the obvious out of the way, no I don’t think Mako and Yoshida are naked in this panel. While Nico Tanigawa have shown that they’re not above very mild levels of fanservice, I don’t think they’d resort to something this teasing.

Probably. 

Anyways, there isn’t anything necessarily wrong with Yoshida’s decision. Taking things slow is very much in line with her character. Sure, it’s kind of inconsiderate of Yoshida to flippantly go the other way after asking for help, and Mako’s frustration is understandable. But more importantly, it highlights Mako influence on Yoshida, and the Kyoto Group in general.

When it’s just Tomoko, Yuri, and Yoshida, they have a unique bond where they don’t really try to push each other out of their comfort zones. Yoshida especially, for being so damn stubborn. But when you add Mako into the mix, a.k.a. the “Mom Friend”, suddenly the level of morale and effort within the group rises. And as the most “normal” friend, Mako’s existence helps to keep their friendship from growing stagnant.

As the Suspension Arc continues, the lack of “action” gives the cast some room for a little introspection. The gags themselves may have been on the limited side, but a lot of these set-up chapters usually are. The future is near, folks, and there are no signs of slowing down, for the characters or the series itself. Changes are over the horizon, but for now, the journey continues.
