I've been thinking about this a lot lately, ngl… now we have the full context of the HKAI breakup and a better overall understanding of their r/s dynamic, I've actually been thinking about their first on-scree conversation in episode/volume 1 - where Ai speaks to him on the payphone. I'd always kind of zeroed in on it as important because it was the one and only time pre-flashback that we'd gotten an actual exchange between the two of them, one sided as it was. And I was especially always really curious about the "No, I'm not trying to get back together" line because it implies A Lot even when we just hear Ai's words.

And now that we know that the HKAI relationship was 1) so unhealthily codependent that Earth's Most Autistic Creature, Ai Hoshino noticed and went mmm i gotta get the fuck outta here 2) ended by Ai herself and 3) Hikaru met that breakup attempt with LET'S GET MARRIED I think it makes it clear that the moment Ai reached out to him he immediately leapt to thinking there was a chance of them getting back together, probably out of pure wishful thinking. And Ai, realizing that he hadn't moved on or been able to grow past her, had to gently but firmly turn him down. And keeping in with that theme of miscommunication tragedies, they were probably both having a VERY different conversation:

What Ai meant: "[I know I'd just be a burden to you, especially with the twins and I don't want to put that weight back on you so] I'm not trying to get back together." What Hikaru heard: "[You're a burden and I can't bear the weight of putting up with you so of course] I'm not trying to get back together."

Minor sidebar, but Takahashi actually highlights that moment in particular during her interview in First Report, the anime guidebook (I promise I'll get it translated soon… I promise…!!!), noting that Akasaka actually gave her the full details as to the HKAI dynamic so she knew how to properly convey Ai's feelings for him at that moment (then noted that as a fan of the original manga she has very mixed feelings about getting spoilers… bless her LOL). So Ai's vocal delivery in that scene can also be considered a pretty big clue…

ANYWAY UH. My point is that I don't think they'd ever get back together unless Hikaru got his shit together and was more stable & less prone to clinging onto Ai at the first opening. She herself even says that they broke up because his obsession with her was consuming him and she wanted him to be able to stand on his own without her, because she thought that was better for him. It's possible that him and Ai being in each other's lives vis-a-vis the twins and Ai being more able to set boundaries (in hindsight, her turning him down is actually really good progress for her!) he could've developed a more healthy relationship with her, but his fixation on her then and in the present day is so all consuming I guess it's hard for me to imagine.

It's actually kind of funny when CA is deemed better for being more realistic than OG HSS partly because the OG MC becomes universally popular relatively quickly, when CA has arguably done similar with Rory. No if anything, they handled it much worse with Rory. People like Clint, Natalie, and Danielle being unhealthily OBSESSED with Rory, to the point where Natalie straight up had a mental breakdown when Rory was taken by Danielle to hoco. I'd be fine with this if it actually contributed to Rory's character arc but holy fuck it felt way more like they were just trying to force them onto our MC and make them seem more desirable. Do yall remember the guy from the psych ward I was OBSESSED with? Idk what I said about him back then but I felt insanely connected to him but also quickly realized it was extremely unhealthy lol. We were admitted together twice and the second time, before I left, he asked me if I wanted to stay in touch but I chose to not do so bc of I knew I was unhealthily obsessed/attached. So we never spoke again.

I ran into him at the grocery store today. So surreal lol. First of all, why the fuck was I was obsessed with him lmao? That was more of a statement than a question, he adjusted his glasses before walking over to your desk.

From following him to all the way to Workers without a guaranteed position, working your own way up to assistant manager just for him to acknowledge you have been nothing but amusing to Samuel. Of course, he knows all your efforts, it was him who recommended you to the boss anyways.

so yeah i was reading the analysis about the wings short films and was thinking how you linked lie and filter with their common themes of control�� how jimin is the one controlled in lie and gains control in filter and imposes the listener to choose what he has to do kinda thing.

so just because i am unhealthily obsessed with intro: persona i was like: “hm, what if there was a slight connection with reflection as well?” so i read the lyrics and didn’t really pick up on much. however, the analysis you linked provided me with the crumbs i needed to satisfy my needs lol.

intro: persona is, quite obviously, about questioning the sense of self: “who am i?” a question which namjoon repeats throughout the entire song. how does he perceive himself, and also, how do others perceive him? the persona he’s created— or the mask, if you will— is the one of the rapper, the performer who writes songs that he wants the world to hear. yet behind that mask is his shadow, his hesitation, his flaws that come up once he’s been scrutinised by the public eye, that he is more than conscious of.

this shadow haunts him, yet not as much as it did when he wrote reflection. in reflection, it eats him up from the inside, tears him to shreds, and he hates it, hates himself because he is his shadow, that he wants to mask with his persona.

he wants to find himself: is he his persona, the person that the world sees and idealises? or his shadow, the person that most people are unaware of, that “the world is not interested in”? this is a theme that is common to both persona and reflection, (it transpires a lot more in the short film, which is why the analysis made me screech in delight lmfao).

in the short film we see namjoon looking at several reflections of himself in the mirror, an illusion to show that he is unable to discern his true self, “the one to really identify with”. an idea i really like from that analysis was his turning to tattooing his arm in order for people to see him expressing himself. i love this because tattoos are marks that are visible, simply so, to individualise the person who has them. he does this because, as op said, “he cannot do this for himself in his own mind. he is confused about who he really is, and it has prevented him from truly liking who he is. instead he is haunted by his possible identities.” (ngl op snapped with this like mad respect to them)

now with persona, we see an evolution in how he perceives himself. the tattoos in reflection, imo, are the beginning of the persona he forges for himself. an exterior that people can associate with him. and he may have hated this before, but in persona he embraces it, owns that he is just as much of his shadow as his persona, even if he still doesn’t know what they are individually, or who he is as a person. he knows his name is R, and “[he] might have been deceiving [him]self, [he] might have been lying, but [he’s] not ashamed of it, this is the map of [his] soul.”

at the end of the song, he still asks “who the hell am i?”, because he still doesn’t know, and he may never find the answer, just as he said in the second line, but he owns it because it is himself, and he’ll live with the shadow and persona that are intricate parts of his identity.

oh my gosh...oh my gosh oh my gosh????? no because you’re so right reflection really is the incarnation of namjoons "shadow" relative to his persona, reflection IS all about grappling with his place in the earth, ALL of our places. he struggles to see himself as anything other than "another diameter to the earth," he’s focusing on living his life cinematically, but he’s lost, he can’t live himself because he struggles with who exactly he’s supposed to love. in the short film, i know it’s hyyh related but the scene where he’s trying to get to the phone booth but it’s chained up, as much as it’s about his character not being able to be there for taehyungs character, it could just as much be about him not knowing how to call for help.

and then in persona he’s STILL wondering who the hell he is, but he’s content with it, instead of the melancholy of reflection, wondering about the point of anyone’s existence, in persona he talks about how that answer will probably never be found because of the beauty of individuality. he still struggles with his worth as an artist, but he leaves the construction of his persona to others, essentially retiring his control on the mask.

in reflection he very literally etches how he wants to seen into his skin with ink, trying to keep control of the way he’s perceived as to not let the shadow out. In persona, the ink is drawn around him in the doodles, he has no control over it, he acknowledges the separation between himself and his persona, as well as his shadow as an integral part of himself that he cannot part from so long as there is a mask. im going to scream kim namjoon you did it again.

Ngl metal gear is really great for learning cultural trivia. They do have a Japanese equivalent to weebs, its people who are unhealthily obsessed with cowboys and guns and wild west, think all of America is wild west, even has like... intercommunity discourse on treatment of Indigenous folks in their media, how corrupt the laws are, how women are treated etc. In these shows/movies.

Where did I learn this at the age of 13? Googling 'why is Revolver Ocelot a cowboy' and going through one of the weirdest rabbit holes yet. Some of it was from US tourist/teacher sources, some of it was from people who have always lived in Japan, some of it was just directly related to the character of Ocelot but honestly I wanted to learn more about cowboy fan culture in Japan bc I thought it was kind of neat, that was like my first time learning how other countries perceived the US that wasnt 'everyone is lazy and eats too much'

It also kind of made me appreciate Ocelot more, Kojima really just put a cowboy in mgs1 to make the western fans happy in his very American centric action stealth game. It's funny bc there really was no reason for a cowboy to be in a military game which is why I googled it in the first place so like, I guess it makes sense culturally.

The fact that Ocelot and Otacon are both a gift to and tongue in cheek joke about these types of people is something that I always liked about mgs. Kojima and co. Are just like really aware of the kind of people at home and in other countries who play their games and like to give little nods to everyone. While still making fun of them
