"Her name is
She, queen of the kings, runnin' so fast, beatin' the wind.
Nothin' in this world can stop the spread of her wings.
She, queen of the kings, broken her cage, threw out the keys
She will be the warrior of the North and Southern Seas." - Alessandra Mele
A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle Jensen has captured my whole heart and attention. I simply cannot wait for book two in the Saga of the Unfated. This book made me wish I could draw out of a desperate desire to capture the scenes in fan art that's sorely lacking. I so hope that it will take off and gain a following.

The Esper Woods - Phlex
The Phlex is a nocturnal insect with strong Psychic Force. Similar to a mosquito, it depends on other creatures to get its nourishment. But the Phlex is a much more extreme case than that.
Whenever it needs its vital nutrients, it will fly around at night in search of some unsuspecting, usually sleeping creature. It will then land on their head and inject the Psychic Force it stores in its body, controlling its new host like a puppet. The host will then be controlled to find and consume whatever the Phlex assumes is food, and will continue to do so until it is satisfied. It cannot sense taste through its host, nor can it gauge how full the host's stomach is. It can't even feel pain through the host if they eat something possibly hazardous. And once the Phlex is satisfied, it will detach itself and fly away, leaving the host with an itchy scalp and an exceedingly bad tummy-ache.
In this image, this poor Leppicorn just broke into a human's home at night and consumed a lot already thanks to the Phlex. We can see he's been eating a smoked ham, a bread roll, half a stick of butter, half a carton of egg whites, some cran-mango juice, and part of a can of soda (like, the can itself). We haven't see everything else he's had so far -- half a (still) frozen pizza, dry macaroni, three bananas (peel and all), a cinnamon stick, a box of raisins, the box the raisins came in, and four strawberry-scented wax cubes.
On the off-chance someone tries to swat the Phlex off the host's head, it will utilize the host's body and abilities to defend itself. It could require a lot more motion to do so, and if it goes on too long it could cause the host to awaken. When this happens, it becomes a struggle for the host to regain control of their body while the Phlex tries injecting more of its Psychic Force. It's advised not to kill the Phlex while it controls a host; there is a possibility of brain damage if the control is abruptly severed.

Thanks to @penguinrandomhouse for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review
✩🩸🛡️ Review:
A promising start to an action-packed series with a scorching romance!
“A Fate Inked in Blood” follows Freya, a shield maiden blessed by the gods, as she battles to unite the fractured nation of Skaland under a power-hungry jarl—while also resisting her forbidden attraction for his fiery son.
Jensen weaves elements of Norse mythology into her world’s magic system and I was immediately hooked. The idea that the power of the gods can manifest in those who receive a drop of their blood during conception was really fascinating and following Freya’s journey as she navigates her god-given abilities was even more so. Her character is very distinct from others in the book in that she is iron-willed, and fiercely protective of her family, which made her perspective more compelling to read from.
Freya and Bjorn’s forbidden romance is so so good! I could not get enough of the tension, banter, and mutual pining that contribute to their irresistible chemistry. Bjorn is the perfect love interest: a skilled warrior that cannot resist fussing over Freya’s wounds, staying at her side always, and sharing a bed with her to keep her warm. I enjoyed watching the two take fate into their own hands by slowly giving in to their desires despite the forces keeping them apart.
Unfortunately, the second half of the book lost me a little bit. The pacing slows and I found myself gradually losing interest as Freya contemplated the same dilemma over and over again. Seasoned fantasy readers may find the ending predictable, but it still packed enough of a punch that I’ll likely reach for book 2 when it comes out!

Best Books I've Read so far This Year
Mid-year wrap up of the books that really stood out to me so far.
Since the year is a little halfway over, I figured I would share the best books I’ve read so far this year. These are all books that I couldn’t put down and thought about long after finishing. There were many books this year that I considered great, but these seven are the ones (or series) that I felt stood out above the rest. While I almost included Crescent City, I didn’t think Bryce and Hunt’s…

In an alternate universe where the Markarth Incident took a different turn and the Stormcloaks sided with the Forsworn after their king offered a Talos-worship sanctuary, the Empire is facing civil war in Skyrim right on the heels of the Great War and risking losing the entire North. When the rebels manage to frame a staunch Imperial loyalist for Talos-worship, Titus Mede is left with no choice but to bring an agent out of forced retirement. An agent who lost his very soul to a foreign power's brutal religious establishment... and who has intimate connections to an orphaned boy at the heart of the Reach Court. As young Cicero Di Rosso starts finding a new family, the old comes back to haunt him and could destroy everything he's managed to put together.
NEW CHAPTER! Not a lot happens but I managed to start getting people where they need to be, so go me. Leliana misses home and latches on to the first masked person she sees. Cicero Senior just wants off this wretched tundra. Madanach would like his husband-to-be to stop getting on quite so well with his sister’s new partner, and everyone is being weirded out by the Thalmor behaving. And Karliah is sensing a threat to her not-a-boyfriend’s wellbeing and decides to act.
