simple ukulele tablature tutorial

in tablature (commonly shortened to tabs), the string on the bottom is the one at the top when youre playing, and vice versa

confusing, right?

well, tablature is based on sitting the ukulele flat in front of you

as you can see in my example here, this ukulele is tuned to GCEA, which is the standard tuning for everything other than baritone. if your ukulele is meant to be tuned differently for a certain song, it should tell you how it is meant to be tuned somewhere on the thing

now then, tablature has numbers on the lines

a 0 means open; no fingers on the frets

any number after that means your finger should be on the corresponding fret

this example has no fingers on any of the frets

this example is the same thing as the last, except a G chord instead of open

these are the basics, if anyone wants me to explain other things with tablature, please let me know

Was going through my old sheet music from middle school and...

And so of course I brought out the old ukulele and gave it a run through (I'm surprised I can still play the thing actually) and... It's surprisingly good like it has no reason being that good for being arranged by 12/13 year old me... It's not finished though and i almost kinda wanna finish it for the 13 year old inside me...

learning to play the ukulele was cringy until i remembered that means i can learn to play all the antony kos songs that he wrote on his ukulele (which is a solid 90% of them) and now i simply have no choice but to learn

Fun fact about me:

I offer free music tutorship for kids who can't afford (/their parents won't pay for) lessons. I make them all hand-written info booklets to use each session and I thought I'd share what I'm working on for tomorrow (it's my first lesson with a new kid)

They wanted to learn Riptide. (Which is great for me, 'cause it's damn easy).
