“Life was a road, and if departed from at a tangent, the longer for it. And a long road was a long life - a case where to travel was better than to arrive, the point of arrival being, after all, always the same: death.” ✨🐧✨ Death and the Penguin by Andrey Kurkov is a Ukrainian satire novel following Viktor and his pet penguin Misha, we watch as things go from uncomplicated and routine to complex and dangerous. This book had me hooked from the very first page. While admittedly slow starting and a bit odd, this book was told is such a lyrical and captivating way. I always wanted to know what happened next and found it hard to put down. The atmosphere tended to switch from bleak to warm, and it provided a great background to the happenings in the novel. Viktor was such an interesting character to read about! He has high aspirations and takes pride in his work, which is clear with the way he talks about his writing. Viktor also flips between being paranoid and incredibly serene, and sometimes these moods are at odd with what is actually happening in the moments. I loved that throughout the novel, Misha was a sort of mirror for Viktor; echoing the feeling of being lost and out of place. Misha gave the novel some of the novels most profound ideas and questions, but also provided the sweet moments throughout as well, and it’s the contrast of these moments that have stuck with me. An intriguing and thought provoking novel, I’d highly recommend picking this book up! ✨🐧✨ Death and the Penguin is book 114 for 2022. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2022 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #deathandthepenguin #andreykurkov #ukrainianliterature #russianliterature #contemporarysatire https://www.instagram.com/p/CmtyyuNrSEr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Jurij Andruchowytsch is presumed to be one of the most important voices of ukrainian literature. In 2003, "Twelve Rings (Дванадцять обручів)" was released. I found this german translation by accident at a place to exchange books. . How to summarize a book that has nothing summrizing? First there is Karl-Joseph Zumbrunnen, an austrian fotographer that fell in love with the Ukraine, especially Lemberg. He and seven other main characters with cultural backgrounds are invited to a luxury hospice for a strange meeting, which motivation never got explained. The host, a man that never appears until the fever dream of another character, is a kind of deus ex machina, later named as the writer. But the whole content is about a broken country in it's spring awakening. Like the daughter of a writer finds out the meaning of the twelve rings of spring in her own awakening. . Also other things want to be portraied in this book, the huzulian folklore or the ukrainian national poet, Bohdan-Ihor Antonytsch. But these are not portraits, these are strange collection of true and invented parts of their existance, what I totally loved! Conjecture with courage and a poet that is presumed to still appear in Lemberg many years after his death. A book of metaphors, like the hospice as the complex Europe. An intellectual, nested book switching between reality, dream, times and conjecture which I really enjoyed to read. More good ukrainian literature please. .

Ukrainian Literature
Tumblr media
Ukrainian Literature: the most famous authors and books. Every person knows that literature it’s a mirror of a political, economic and general situation in a country. From books, we can learn mentality, traditions, and art. And Ukrainian literature shows all these spheres. We have a lot of writers which are famous in the entire world. So if you are interested in knowing more about Ukrainian literature and life we recommend to get to know the most popular and authentical literature.
Tumblr media
Taras Shevchenko
He is the most famous Ukrainian writer and artist. Despite the fact that he had lived for only 47 years, it was enough to become the most important writer for Ukrainians, and his poems are still very actual. For example, in the “Heretic” author thinks about life and a role of a person in the world. And in the “Katerina” you can understand traditions and mentality of people, and a life of a single mother in 19th. Also, his poems can help you to learn a lot about Ukrainian history and feel the spirit of the independent nation. The good fact that “Kobzar” you can find in English translation in almost every bookshop. And his face adorns a 100-hryvnia banknote.
Tumblr media
Ivan Kotlyarevsky
He was the first who wrote a book in Ukrainian nonliterary language. His most famous book its “Eneyida”. Kotlyarevsky shows a real life of Ukrainian people in 18th Century. Burlesque story formed the basis of other books. A lot of books by this author are about the real life of Ukrainian people. You can get to know about mentality. Study some traditions and our history. Also, we are recommending reading “Natalka Poltavka”. By the way, the author’s face adorns a 500-hryvnia banknote.
Tumblr media
Ivan Franko
Franko was not only the writer but also historian, ethnographer, and politician. He lived in the western part of Ukraine on the edge of 19-20th. Also, Franko was an applicant for the Nobel Prize. He wrote a lot of books, but the most famous is “Zakhar Berkut”. The story shows a fight between Ukrainian and Mongolian conquerors in the 13th Century. And in the collection of poems “In the Sweat of the Brow” (Ukr. – “В поті чола”) Franko shows a real life of workers and poor class of the people. In all his works there are historical, philosophic and political topics. By the way, you can see a Franko’s face adorns a 20-hryvnia banknote. And the city Ivano-Frankivsk is called in his honor.
Tumblr media
Lesya Ukrainka
She is the most romantic author. Lesya had lived for only 41 years, and was fighting with pneumonia. But she made a significant contribution to Ukrainian literature and art development. She thinks about love, live, history in her poems and mixes her personal feelings with traditional myths and legends. And in the poem “The Forest Song” you can find a lot of interesting facts about mentality, superstitions, myths, and traditions. By the way, in 2017 a cartoon “Mavka” was presented. This poem formed the basis of the plot of this cartoon. Also, we recommend reading “Obsessive”, “Cassandra”, “Stone master” and “Blue Rose”. And traditionally her face adorns a 200-hryvnia banknote. Have you ever read a book by these writers?  Please share with us in comments. Discover Ukraine Culture & History Read the full article

🇬🇧 “Two years after my mother died, my father fell in love with a glamorous blonde Ukrainian divorcée. He was eighty-four and she was thirty-six. She exploded into our lives like a fluffy pink grenade, churning up the murky water, bringing to the surface a sludge of sloughed-off memories, giving the family ghosts a kick up the backside.” 🎈 Thus starts #ashorthistoryoftractorsinukrainian by #marinalewycka. Reading this for #readaroundtheworld project and it will cover #ukraine. It tells the story of a Ukranian family living in the UK. I love reading stories about living in another country cause I’m doing the same thing, I can relate. Many comments stated that this was an extremely funny, mad and hilarious book. Honestly, I don’t think it’s funny, at all. The characters are 2 dimensional and the book is just mediocre. I was thinking about giving it up when I saw this sentence:“In language are encapsulated not only thoughts but cultural values.” If you need to use 2 languages in your daily life, you’ll understand how deep this is. So I’ll keep on reading no matter what just because of this sentence. ☺️ Such a thing ever happened to you? Do you remember the sentence? . . #ukrainianliterature #readdiversebooks #diversebooks #kitap #okumahalleri #amreading #okuyorum #booklr #readinglife #okumaaşkı #lovereading #booksarelife #readtolive (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrAe9QsFL95/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=gw9q1lojg3nw

It’s Patron Suggestion Week! Kristyn asked for “more Ukrainian folk tales or folk heroes.” I’m drawing a scene from the Fairy Drama “Song of the Forest” by Lesia Ukrainka. I’ve drawn other characters from this play before, including Mavka, Rusalka, and the Fever Wraith. Here’s today’s progress. Oh, and the music is real (although I didn’t put in the key/time). The song is “Ой піду я у лісок,” (Oh I’ll go to the forest) from this tiny Ukrainian song book. . ————————————————————— If you want to join in on the fun: www.patreon.com/audrabalionart ————————————————————— . #dailydrawing #traditionaldrawing #wip #songoftheforest #lesiaukrainka #mavka #ukrainianfolktales #ukrainianliterature #ukrainianart #willowtree #oaktree #reedpipe #ukrainianmusic https://www.instagram.com/p/CbwkHeZuJEz/?utm_medium=tumblr

It’s Patron Suggestion Week! Kristyn asked for “more Ukrainian folk tales or folk heroes.” I’ve actually been reading some new ones lately, but I decided finally on drawing a scene from the Fairy Drama “Song of the Forest” by Lesia Ukrainka. In this scene the peasant youth Lukash and the forest nymph Mavka fall in love, as Spring blooms around them. . ————————————————————— If you want to join in on the fun: www.patreon.com/audrabalionart ————————————————————— . #dailydrawing #traditionaldrawing #wip #sketch #songoftheforest #lesiaukrainka #springlove #mavka #ukrainianfolktales #ukrainianliterature #ukrainianart https://www.instagram.com/p/Cbrci4juW8u/?utm_medium=tumblr

To start out my #dailydrawing week of Spooky-Creepy, I’ve got a figure from Ukrainian mythology that has lingered in my mind since childhood. While I wasn’t thinking about it at the time, she surely inspired The Chameleon in my #flight19comic.
