Jurij Andruchowytsch is presumed to be one of the most important voices of ukrainian literature. In 2003, "Twelve Rings (Дванадцять обручів)" was released. I found this german translation by accident at a place to exchange books. . How to summarize a book that has nothing summrizing? First there is Karl-Joseph Zumbrunnen, an austrian fotographer that fell in love with the Ukraine, especially Lemberg. He and seven other main characters with cultural backgrounds are invited to a luxury hospice for a strange meeting, which motivation never got explained. The host, a man that never appears until the fever dream of another character, is a kind of deus ex machina, later named as the writer. But the whole content is about a broken country in it's spring awakening. Like the daughter of a writer finds out the meaning of the twelve rings of spring in her own awakening. . Also other things want to be portraied in this book, the huzulian folklore or the ukrainian national poet, Bohdan-Ihor Antonytsch. But these are not portraits, these are strange collection of true and invented parts of their existance, what I totally loved! Conjecture with courage and a poet that is presumed to still appear in Lemberg many years after his death. A book of metaphors, like the hospice as the complex Europe. An intellectual, nested book switching between reality, dream, times and conjecture which I really enjoyed to read.
