Winter in Virginia is a stunned thing. The landscape itself seems shocked at the prospect of snow. Ronan hates the stuff on principal, and perhaps especially the way the wind whips across his scalp and makes him shudder. December has one redeeming quality: Adam home from college for the break. Adam in Ronan’s proximity for two weeks and change. Adam in a scarf. Adam, poised against gray landscape. Pale boy, pale trees. Ronan looks his fill.

But Christmas puts him in a towering mood, and Adam isn’t interested in coddling him. Ronan hates the holiday on principal, and perhaps especially the way it makes him think of his parents, his father’s impossible dream-presents, his mother humming and draping tinsel on a tree. “Then don’t have a tree,” Adam said, over the phone, before he came home. “No tree,” Ronan agreed, because he also wasn’t enthused about the prospect of cutting one down. Blue would have his head. 

He wakes on the day with a dark affect anyway, sneaking out of bed before Adam can stir. Like a kid eager for presents, except that Ronan is nearly a man and exhausted. He goes to sit on the freezing stoop with a mug of coffee. He watches the blurry white sun rise behind the clouds. He’s expecting the door to open behind him before long. He isn’t expecting Adam’s hand on the back of his neck. 

They watch the whitewashed landscape together until Ronan starts to shiver. Adam increases the pressure on his neck. “What do you want?” he asks, a low murmur. An offering. 

Ronan reaches up. He takes Adam’s hand in his own hand and brings it to his mouth. He kisses the palm, the fingertips. “You pick,” he says, capitulating. He doesn’t want to solve the day or chart a course through it. He wants Adam to decide, and for Ronan to follow his wishes. He kisses the back of Adam’s hand. He puts his devotion there. 

Adam accepts it. He lays his hand along the line of Ronan’s jaw. “Come back inside,” he says.

I don’t know if this has been pointed out but a major thing that happened after s7 came out was that a lot of people complained about Adam dying and one of the story board artists (Barlee) tweeted a lot of things that makes sense now that I know s7-s8 were edited, talking about “patching things up” and “doing the best they could given the circumstances”. mask: Does your OC wear a mask, literally or figuratively? What goes on beneath it? Is there anyone in their life who gets to see who they are under the mask?

Oh, Ash definitely wears a mask! He pretends to be goofy and laid back when he's actually very, very fucked up. He is a survivor of multiple types of abuse and has the (physical and mental) scars to prove it. But he fears the moment the laughter stops he'll split in two. So he doesn't think about the past and he doesn't want to encourage people to ask about it either, so he tries to keep everyone smiling.

Beneath the mask lies a scared and deeply traumatized kid. He tries to never let it slip.

Micah has seen him without it. (Micah is Isa's older brother and was Ashley's best friend. He realized his bud had a shit home life and basically kept bringing Ash home with him from school to 'hang out' but really it was because he wanted to keep Ashley away from all that. Micah also had a crush on Ashley but let's ignore that lmao, that's a sore spot.) When Ashley's mom dies, he breaks down on Micah and cries like a baby. He tells him everything. Just all of it. It comes rushing out and it can't put it back. It makes him avoid Micah for a while after, because what the fuck, why did I say all that? Haha...

Later on, Isa (and eventually Aaron) get to see the real him.
