I made another Dandy's world au, but this might as well be one that I'm actually pretty happy with

Meet Tamed Twisteds! The name is pretty obvious; it is where Twisteds are tamed and taken care of by the hands of Boxten and Poppy! The only Toons left in this au it seems (read more about the two below, let me know if you want more)

Boxten

- Still pretty cowardly and reserved but is getting over his fear after some time of taking care of the twisteds in his care

- Gained the crack on the side of his head due to trying to tame Twisted Pebble (must protect bean-)

- Found Astro's coat in the Gardenview Center, wears it after some nagging from Astro himself

- Twisted RnD likes tying a red ribbon onto Boxten to show their little bond (think of it as some friendship item or something)

- Twisteds who are tamed by Boxten has the yellow band

- Mostly the one to stay and care for the Twisteds, though Boxten does sometimes go on runs with Poppy

- Worries about Dandy's whereabouts after he went missing

- Gets scared easily (poor boy has been through a lot-)

Poppy

- Became pretty cold-hearted and more easier to anger but I promise she still has a good heart

- Protective of Boxten after the incident with Twisted Pebble

- Had cut her dress for more mobility to get around easier

- Twisted Toodles likes styling Poppy's hair along with tying bows onto her

- Twisteds who are tamed by Poppy has the blue band

- Mostly the one going down into floors to seek supplies and complete machines, she is reluctant to let Boxten come along but still let him follow anyway

- Doesn't care much about Dandy, mainly focused on trying to help her friends

- Has a slight problem with drinking Pop soda

Astro - Skydancer Originally thought Fae, but I think Skydancer really works. Skydancers can read out energy and emotion, they're gentle and when in a combat situation tend to focus on being stealthy and scouting things rather than directly fighting.

Boxten - Tundra Tundras aren't chatty, and like to avoid confrontation when possible.

Brightney - Snapper Snappers learn a lot and are basically walking encyclopedias. Would give you a novel of information if you listen for long enough!

Cosmo - Obelisk Obelisks like to help however they can, which I think fits with Cosmo pretty well

Dandy - Coatl I feel like the feathers would work well with his petals, along with the fact Coatls try to placate others with gifts, so I imagine the rejection of his 'gifts' {the items he offers, seeing them as gifts because tapes are mostly useless otherwise} would be taken as a sign of aggression, in which Coatls will swiftly fight

Flutter - Aether Moth /silly but on a more serious note, they travel around a lot which I feel like Flutter would do if she could. Unfortunately we dont really have much on Flutter

Finn - Fathom Enjoy light hearted conversations, near constant state of travel, water dragons.

Goob - Tundra Tundras are fluffy and quick to recognize friends, despite their poor facial memory!

Poppy - Spiral Sprials are very energetic and excitable, talking a lot and tying themselves into knots sometimes

Razzle and Dazzle - Aberration Aberrations are two headed dragons with each head having their own consciousness. They work together in situations that are needed, but tend to have differing points of view.

Rodger - Snapper Snapper for similar reasons to Brightney, but I imagine he's older and more boring

Scraps - Spiral While Scraps isn't as excitable and energetic as Poppy, I still feel like Spiral works for her! Although to be fair I didn't really know what else to assign her

Shelly - Obelisk! Enthusiastic in wanting to help however they can {linking to her active ability}, an Obelisk is canonically an Archeologist {Arlo my beloved}!

Sprout - Wildclaw Fight alone to protect those they care about, cause a bit of conflicts with their point of view but the info we have on Wildclaws mostly relates to when its JUST a group of Wildclaws

Srimpo - Stormcatcher Bogsneak Like to be far away from others, frequently argue and dont care much about communal good

Teagan - Undertide Undertides are accommodating and patient, enjoying the company of others.

i just saw a post that reminded me of this strange girl i used to work with.

so there was this guy that i made friends with long before i even met her. i didn't even know that they knew each other (it's possible to not know anyone and still work together daily where i worked). anyway, she saw me with him and was normal at first but i had ducked down at my station to sort through my bag so i guess she thought i ran to the restroom? and she says to him "you better not be cheating on me" and he's like "h-how am i cheating on you?"

so i'm hiding under my station like o_o did i just overhear something i wasn't supposed to? did i get dude in trouble just by walking with him. poor guy. so, not wanting dude to get in trouble with his girl i decide to fall back, out of respect (though we were only ever friends but i'm thinking if he's with someone THAT jealous that us walking to our stations together is a threat, i wanna stay out of it.) at break time dude comes up to me like usual so we could go on break and i'm like mf, you gonna get your ass in trouble! but i dont actually say anything, i'm just sorta trying to talk to her and hope that keeps the heat off me. she decides she wants to go outside for her break to smoke, he comes with me.

turns out, he doesn't really know the girl. they worked together like twice and then she started being weird toward him. and i was thinking, phew, boy i thought i was getting you in trouble somehow. so i go back to being normal and i think it's all cool and dandy. one day, he gets stationed elsewhere but she and i are together and she's grilling me about where he is because we're closer apparently. so i was like oh when i messaged him earlier, he said he got stationed at suchandsuch. if eyes were daggers she'd've stabbed my ass. she was like 'you have his number???' and i'm thinking, dude ok. what's her deal? but i just explained it was discord and blah blah blah.

she tells me that she has this huuuuuuge crush on him. and i'm thinking about what he said about them barely knowing each other then she's grilling me about what i know about him and i'm keeping it vague out of respect for his privacy. i've known this girl for 3 days i think- definitely less than a week at that point. anyway, she asks if i was into him. i was in a serious relationship at the time and in no way looking at anyone else so i'm like ??. next thing you know she starts telling me about how she knows how to make chloroforms and how she's good at tying ropes and if she ever had to she'd probably be good at hiding a body.

this wasn't at all in context. this was completely unprovoked. i was just like ?????. i'm working in a factory where they hire literally anyone. so while she could've just been saying some shit to sound cool, that didn't sound cool to me at all. i was lowkey kinda concerned even though it sounded like edgy bs because why would you say that?? lol.

anyway, about a month later she knowingly came to work with covid and gave it to me but tried to make it seem like she got it from me because i was the one that got teSted. but she was the one that came to work with a fever and no sense of smell at the height of covid on a day that i was perfectly healthy😊

idk why but that post i saw about chloroform that reminded me of her. maybe she watched/listened to/read a lot of true crime and wanted to share or maybe she was vaguely threatening me because she thought i wanted "her man" whose face i'd literally never even seen before because we were all wearing masks lolol

Review: Things Will Be Different (2024) 4.5/5

What a pleasant surprise. I had never even heard of Things Will Be Different, but the one or two sentence summary I read intrigued me so I decided to give it a shot. And I'm really glad I did. It's proof that you can make a really effective sci-fi film on a small budget. It just depends on the approach.

Because at its heart, this really is a movie about the relationship between Joe and Sidney, seemingly estranged siblings who have are trying to hide out after committing a robbery. There's some vague dialogue that suggests a difficult or traumatic childhood, and a rift that occurred early in their adulthoods which has left Joe feeling like he abandoned her when she needed him. The movie doesn't really elaborate much on either, but it doesn't need to. I'll get back to this point in a bit, but one of the things I appreciate the most about Things Will Be Different is that it doesn't overexplain things. It only gives just the precise amount of information needed to understand what the movie wants you to understand, what you need to understand, and no more. We learn just enough about Joe and Sidney's past to understand their relationship, where that rift between them comes from, why things between them sometimes seem equal parts stilted and familiar, why the tensions between them boil over in the way they do at certain points, and why they're driven to make the choices they do. It's a very careful and deeply considered portrait of a complex relationship between two siblings, with all the messy things they feel for and about each other being made so clear throughout the course of the movie made not through the characters actually verbalizing them, but in the things they decide to talk about, the theories they come up with about what's happening to them, the ways they react to each other.

Of course, the performances are a big part of how effective the relationship at the center of this film is. I don't know that I've ever seen Riley Dandy or Adam David Thompson is anything else. According to his wikipedia page, Thompson was in the Netflix series Godless, which I'm working my way through now, but I can't place him off the top of my head. They're both so good in this, and I really hope to see more of them in the future. For the most part, Things Will Be Different really is a two hander. A chamber piece, almost. There are some other actors that come in for them to perform against very late in the game, but for the vast majority of the runtime it's just the two of them. They have a really great sibling chemistry (I could go on a really long spiel about sibling chemistry in movies and tv and how hard it is to get right) that's able to carry that feeling of years and years of moments and fractures that all build up into the messy relationship they have now. Which is incredibly important, especially because of how few details we actually do learn about their history. Dandy does a really incredible job with Sidney, capturing that sort of no nonsense determination that is so often common in those with a troubled past who straightened themselves out. I think the real star of the show, though, is Thompson. There's a certain physicality to his performance that just FEELS like he's carrying all the guilt and regret from what he perceives to be his failings with Sidney on his shoulders, which just becomes a more and more important aspect of his performance as the movie goes on.

The sci-fi elements are tied into the story of the siblings in a way that works incredibly well because of how deeply it ends up tying into all of their issues with their relationship and their past. I think that's really the best way to go with these kinds of lowkey sci-fi movies. In order to hide out from the cops following the robbery, Sidney and Joe flee to a farmhouse that was essentially given or lent to Joe by a customer at his bar that allows them to, if they do the correct things in the correct sequence, travel to another time in the same house. Their plan is to stay their, in what appears to be the 1990s based on the tv, VHS tapes, and CDs, for two weeks and then return to their time. But when the day to go back comes, they find themselves blocked from being able to do so, forcing them to enter into a deal with an unseen, behind the scenes force.

It's such a simple but clever use of sci-fi to tie into the relationship between these siblings. Coming back together after being estranged for so long basically forces them back into the past in the same way the house does. Based on the actors' ages, Sidney and Joe would have grown up in the 1990s, at least in part, so it's clearly no coincidence that when the house sends them back in time it seems to send them back to the 1990s. The two weeks they initially spent there seem to be fun and relatively happy, mirroring the more carefree and innocent joy of youth. But once they're stuck there things become much more tense and difficult, mirroring the more difficult resentments and regrets of their relationship that came as they got older. They faceless voices keeping them there, giving them instructions are the authority they basically have to answer to, filling in a sort of parental role in this forced facsimile of their youth.

The sci-fi/time travel aspects also play a big role in exploring the movie's themes. I think the title gives a pretty good hint at what one of the primary themes of the movie is. That phrase, "things will be different", that promise that this time things really will be different, is something anyone who's been stuck in what feels like an endless cycle of abuse or disappointment with another person has heard a million times. And that's one of the movie's more important themes, that idea of the cycle of mistakes that happen within families. Not abuse necessarily, as I don't think there's anything in the movie that actually suggests any abuse ever happened, but of mistakes being made and disappointments and regrets. In terms of both the cycles individuals get stuck in and the generational cycles. While that idea of repeating cycles is really pulled out by the sci-fi aspects of the film later on, it's there through pretty much the whole movie. Joe and Sidney get stuck in that farmhouse for a long time, and we see that the more time goes on the more it feels to them like the same thing over and over and over again. We get a scene where Sidney is explaining a theory to Joe about exactly what's going on, and we learn that this isn't the first time she's done this, that she's done research and come up with other theories over and over and over again. That's such an ever present thing in the narrative, that feeling of being stuck and doing the same thing over and over with no results. It's such a clear and incredibly effective exploration of the theme that, by the end, has been made extremely literal by the sci-fi aspects of the story.

I also just want to note how creative the sci-fi aspects really are here. I don't know exactly what the budge here was, but given the approach to time travel that's taken here I'm going to guess it was pretty small. But it just goes to show how effective low, or even no budget sci-fi can be if the filmmakers are creative with it. I don't want to over explain how it was all done because I think there's a lot of joy in experiencing it firsthand without any foreknowledge. But I do really want to make it clear how clever and creative the time travel aspect of the story is handled in a practical sense. Keeping it all confined to this property was such a good idea, because the only thing that really needed to be done to communicate that the time travel had occurred was to dress it up like the 1990s. The means of communication with the unseen authority is also just ingenious. Stuff like this is why I have such an appreciation for low budget sci-fi.

As I said earlier, one of the things that I do think makes so much of what works about Things Will Be Different so effective is how efficient the writing is in delivering information. Nothing is ever overexplained, and for the most part we only get the bare minimum of the information we need to understand what's happening and what the relationship between Sidney and Joe is like. It's not completely perfect (which I'll get into), but for the most part I think it was the right choice for this story. Especially when it comes to Joe and Sidney's relationship, because so much of the movie really is about learning about the tensions and regrets that exist between them, and it's a lot more rewarding learning about that through the way they interact and talk to each other rather than just being told it all. I think it was also, for the most part, the right choice for the sci-fi side of things. When it comes to sci-fi, figuring out how much to explain to the audience about what's happening can be a really tough tightrope for a writer to walk across. So often writers will overexplain things, which (1) completely, in my opinion anyway, ruins a lot of the allure and magic, and (2) is a big mistake, again, in my opinion, because so often with sci-fi premises there's never going to be a way to make it all make perfect sense in a way that everyone will understand, simply because it's science FICTION. But even if a writer doesn't overexplain, it can be tough to know how much to explain, especially because every movie is going to be different.

I think it works with Things Will Be Different for the most part. We spend the vast, vast majority of the movie with just Sidney and Joe, seeing things from their perspective, so I think it makes works that we know as much, or as little, as they do throughout the whole thing. I think it also ties in with the overall themes of the movie, that idea that both the characters and us don't ever get a full explanation for why things are happening, how they're happening, etc. Going back to that theme of the cycles of disappointment and regret that people and families can get stuck in, we so often don't know the whole story of why that happens, why someone we love keeps disappointing us, why each generation in a family seems to keep making the same mistakes over and over. Since the sci-fi aspect of this story really is that theme made literal, I think that keeping the explanations to a minimum works really well here.

I will say, though, that there are just a few bits that I do think could have used a bit of explaining, or at least more clarification about the connections they were trying to make. I want to avoid major spoilers in this review, so I won't go into detail about what I'm talking about, but throughout the movie the siblings, particularly Sidney, keep having these moments of memory of their mother, and late in the film there seems to be a very direct connection being drawn between that and a major reveal, but I don't feel like there was enough clarity in what that connection was supposed to be, or even really could be, to solidly tie it into the movie's overall themes and ideas. There's a very surface level connection that's clear, but there's just not enough there to make any firm connections beyond that surface level. For the most part, I think most of the things that aren't overexplained or that go mostly unexplained work really well for the story and the ideas it's exploring, but there are just a few things that feel like they would have worked a lot better with a littler more clarification. I also think that there are a few things about the sci-fi side of things that, if thought about just a bit more than movie offers, would probably unravel a little bit.

But, overall, I think those few problems are pretty small in comparison to just how well this thing works overall. I think it's one of the best examples of a sci-fi movie tying its sci-fi elements so deeply into the characters and the themes being explored, and it's also one of the best examples of just how much a filmmaker can do with low budge sci-fi.

She understood the need for balance, at least on an intellectual level. But emotionally she couldn’t quite accept it. That naive and rather childish part of her that wanted everything to be kind, for there to just be good guys and bad guys, with clear lines between them was stubborn to say the least.

“Not everythin’, that’s not what I’m sayin’.” She grumbled. Lilith was making points about the human race that were difficult for her to argue against, something that only caused Tyler to grow increasingly more uncomfortable. All that damage, all that death and pain, and all of it done by regular ol’ humans. No infernal powers necessary. “But most people aren’t like that. Most people are pretty decent. You seriously tellin’ me that most demons are too?”

“Team Heaven are mostly assholes.” She agreed with a frustrated sigh. “I can only think of like… two exceptions to that. Never did understand how people didn’t read those stories and immediately be like ‘WTF, why are we prayin’ to this guy’, y’know? But what they’ve done doesn’t make what anyone else does any less fucked up.” That ‘anyone else’ was perhaps a little more pointed than necessary…

At the mention of her own destructive powers, the cambion broke eye contact to instead look down at the floor, glaring at it as if it were personally responsible for all her problems. “We’ve already talked about that.”

She’d been thinking a lot about her powers since that first conversation with Lilith. A lot more than she’d like to admit. The elephant in the room was becoming harder and harder to ignore, how vulnerable she was without them becoming increasingly clear as time went on. She’d even briefly tried to research the symbols on her back in an attempt to understand what exactly had been done to her, before fear that the coven might somehow know what she was doing crept in. Several panic attacks later, and Ty was hastily removing the little information she’d discovered from her laptop, going back to pretending it was all fine and dandy. Back to pretending there wasn’t a constant ache inside her. “It’s better without them. I can’t hurt people any more, that’s what matters.”

Lilith had to resist the urge to roll her eyes, to force herself to simply appear attentive and...non-judgemental, as she heard for the thousandth time the argument the supposedly 'morally sound' so often made against Hell, not only forgetting the need for a balance, but the habits of the righteous to commit much greater crimes.

"While everything that humans, mortals, do has brought only joy and kindness and protection to the world?" She challenged gently. "I imagine that there are certain people, certain areas of the world, that might say the same of humans that you say about demons; that all they do is destroy. Abuse. Kill. After all, there are war zones, aren't there? Vast swathes of poverty, of suffering, even the realm itself is attacked; forests and rivers and oceans and soils decimated by humans, making this world almost unliveable for anyone who isn't of an infernal nature. And we didn't do this," she concluded pointedly. "They did."

It never ceased to amaze Lilith, even after thousands of years, that no matter what humans did, the natural destruction and corruption the mortals engaged in, they still pinned all the blame entirely on Hell and all its residents; pointing the finger at creatures that had done far more to maintain the balance than they ever had.

"Besides," she added, "demons didn't burn entire cities, turn women to salt for missing their homes, or demand fathers sacrifice their sons as proof of love and devotion, or destroy an entire civilisation because it simply...wasn't to our liking. That," she said pointedly, "was the other side. The angelic celestials." And yet still they were lauded by the humans, celebrated, worshipped, every crime they'd ever committed either excused or ignored or...simply written out of history.

Looking at Tyler pointedly, Lilith decided to speak frankly, though she made sure to keep a mentor-like tone to both her words and her demeanour.

"If you continue to see everything in black-and-white, ignoring the nuances and...complicated details, you're never going to progress and you're also never going to feel confident in your own power, which means you risk it one day destroying you entirely from within."

You regretted every moment since Javi had left. You worried about something happening to him, or Steve, every moment while they were gone. The way you had parted left much to be desired, and the possibility of what if hung over you constantly. What if your fight just before he left was the last time you ever saw him? How where you supposed to live with that? 

Everyday you arrived at the office and willed for him or Steve to walk through the door triumphantly. But it never came; instead it was just a lot of you sitting around and waiting, practically twiddling your thumbs as you working through the backed up stacks of paperwork. But every moment you weren’t actually working on something, your thoughts drifted back to Javi. How much you missed every part of him. 

But one particularly dull afternoon, as you were sifting through paperwork, drinking your afternoon coffee, you were overwhelmed with a nauseous feeling. Shifting in your uncomfortable desk chair, you waited for the feeling to pass, thinking it must have been you ate for lunch. Perhaps you should have listened to Maria and not used the old salad dressing you found in the fridge. 

When the feeling wasn’t going away and instead increased, you jumped up and dashed towards the bathroom. As soon you entered the bathroom, the smell of cleaner and bleach overwhelmed your senses, and you dived to the floor, emptying the contents of your stomach in the nearest toilet. 

More than you thought had consumed made its way up, and you sat there on the floor for a long time. Only once you were satisfied that nothing was possibly left, you wiped the corners of your mouth with the sleeve of your sweater and stood back up. Sighing, you flushed the toilet before doing to the sink, turning the tap on and sticking your head under the running water to rinse out the acidic taste lingering in your mouth. Strange, you thought to yourself, you never had reactions like that to food. 

Tying your hair up, you left the bathroom and headed back to your office to round out the rest of your day. Hopefully that wouldn’t happen again, but nevertheless, you figured you’d skip dinner just in the case. Thankfully, the rest of the afternoon passed by relatively quickly, and you were back in your own apartment soon enough. You took a steaming shower before slipping into pajamas, and indulging in your ice cream craving. You weren’t really hungry, but that was the one thing that sounded really, really, good to you. That’s when a brilliant idea struck you. 

Setting down your bowl, you grabbed the phone off the receiver and dialed the number you had been given for Steve and Javi. You nervously twisted the cord in your fingers as you listened to the seemingly never ending ring. Maybe it was too late. Maybe they somehow seemed to know it was you calling and decided to ignore it. Maybe they were still and working. Maybe-

“Hello?” before your thoughts could get any darker, Javi’s warm came onto the other life. A sigh of relief escaped your lips as you realized he was okay, at the very least alive.

“Javi,” his name rolled off your tongue like a prayer as you leaned against the counter and closed your eyes, “it’s me.”

“Hi baby,” his voice was warm, but he sounded tired, exhausted even, but he seemed to relax when he realized it was you, “what’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” you admitted, “I just...I miss you. Missed your voice...”

“I miss you, Y/N,” he agreed, “it’s weird being here without you. It’s been too long.”

“Well you’re the reason I’m not there,” you tried to joke, but stopped yourself from going further when you remembered that that was the sole reason for your fight before he and Steve had left, “sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. I didn’t mean it. I’m sorry about starting a fight before you left.”

“You don’t have to apologize. I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have went behind your back and prevented you from coming, and I shouldn’t have fought with you. But, if I’m being honest, I’m glad you’re not here. It’s been dangerous, and we haven’t had much luck.”

“Please tell me you’re okay, Javi, I’ve been so worried about you and Steve,” you tried your best to keep from crying, already feeling prickling at the back of your eyes. You didn’t think just hearing his voice would have that much of an effect on you, “I-I don’t even know what I’d do with myself if we had ended things like that. I’ve been so worried, Javi.”

“It’s okay,” his voice went soft as he tried to soothe you through the phone. He wanted nothing more than to be next to you and be able to pull you into his arms, and remind that he was there and it was all going to be okay. But this was the best he could do for now, to remind how much he loved you, “it’s all going to be okay. I promise you, there’s nothing to worry about. I’ll be back before you know it. Nothing will happen, please don’t cry, honey.”

“Okay,” you wiped away the tears, closing your eyes and picturing him right next to you, whispering all those sweet words into your ears. How it would feel to have his arms around you again, “do you know when you’ll be back?”

“I don’t know,” he sighed heavily and you just knew he was running his hand over his face, both tired and annoyed, not at you, just the situation, “things aren’t panning out as we planned. The leads aren’t coming through and either we’ve got to stick it out or just call it quits for now.”

“Just...be careful,” you felt like you were pleading with him, somehow willing the universe to make sure he came back to you safe and sound, “please.”

“We are,” he promised, and could almost see the smile on his face, “how’ve you been? Is everything okay there?”

“Everything is cherries,” you laughed lightly; of course he’d be concerned about you when he was the one risking everything. You wondered if you should tell him about what happened at lunch, but decided against it. Even if he assured you that he wasn’t worrying, you knew he would be worried, that was just who he was, “nothing too exciting. I’ve got plenty of time to catch up on all that paperwork you and Steve neglect to do. Got everything cleaned up...you two are slobs, and should be punished!”

His warm laugh sounded through the phone and you felt your whole body warm up. How you missed hearing that laugh especially when it came as you were laying in bed with his arms around you, “God, I miss you. Miss hearing that lovely voice boss me around and yell at me.”

“I am not bossy,” you insisted, letting out a small laugh of your own, “I’m just right more often than you think.”

“I know,” you wondered what was going through his mind right now; you’d learned to read his silences well, and there were tons of things that were left unsaid right now. But you weren’t going to push him, you didn’t want to put more pressure on him than necessary, “it’s getting late...I’ll let you go.” 

“Get some rest okay, Y/N?” you nodded even though he couldn’t see you, “stop worrying about me, and take care of yourself. I love you.”

“I love you too, Javi,” you stifled the yawn that bubbled. Sure, you’d be going to sleep, but it wasn’t going to feel the same. Your bed had never felt emptier than it did now, without Javi’s warmth and weight next to you every night, “stay safe...come home soon, yeah?”

“As soon as possible,” he promised, “I’ll be back.”

After another soft goodbye, you hung on the receiver back on the hook and sighed. Even though you had just gotten the opportunity to speak to him, you left lonelier than ever; you missed him more than you’d thought was humanly possible, but here you where, yearning for him from deep within your bones. You had it bad. 

The bowl of ice cream, long forgotten during your conversation with Javi, had completely melted. You picked up the spoon, playing with the now soup-like liquid. Opening the freezer door to stick the bowl back in there, you figured you’d try again tomorrow to eat. it. But the grumble and pang of your stomach convinced you to keep it out and started spooning the sweet cream into your mouth. Normally, you’d rather starve than resort to completely melted ice cream, but it was like something in your had snapped and you just needed it. 

Grabbing the bowl with a sigh, you headed to the couch and flipped on the ancient television that had come with the apartment. Taking a few moments to find something you could follow and understand, you sat back and watched the old movie, slurping up your dessert. It wasn’t long before it was completely gone and you set the bowl on the counter. Eventually you fell asleep on the couch, body too tired to bother and get up to crawl into your bed and stretch out probably. You didn’t remember the last time you had been this tired, but at least you were lost to saccharine dreams of Javi; of you and Javi back together once again.

The next few days passed in a monotonous manner; you were completely on autopilot, and you felt someone was just guiding you through the motions. The only thing that was continuing to shake up your day to day grind was the lingering feeling of sickness that seemed to hang around. You possessed a fairly decent immune system, never really one to catch a cold or flu, or anything really, so it struck you as odd that you were still feeling the same way. Surely it couldn’t be old salad dressing affecting you for days? 

Maybe you were catching some weird bug that was going around, some thing in Colombia you’d finally had contact with and now your bod couldn’t deal with it. But no one else was feeling sick, everyone seemed as dandy as ever. Normally, you’d probably leave it and let it run its course through your body, but the fact that nausea and overall sluggishness was still affecting your every day life had you concerned. 

One warm afternoon, when you had started to feel tired despite the copious amounts of wretched office coffee, your curiosity was piqued. Picking up your unusually quiet office phone, you dialed Connie’s work number, hoping she’d be available; luckily it only rang a few times before you heard a very badly accent, “alo?”

“Connie?” you closed your eyes and pinched the bridge of your as you tried to figure out how to begin explained your problem to her, not wanting to cause her to worry or fret over you, “it’s Y/N.”

“Oh thank goodness,” a sigh of relief left her lips at the sound of your voice, “it’s crazy here today and I really needed a break. What a perfect excuse - did you read my mind or something?”

“Unfortunately not,” you could just picture her running around the small hospital, trying to keep up with the demand, “I...actually have a question for you. I need some advice...I think.”

“What’s wrong, honey?” her maternal instincts immediately kicked into overdrive, bringing a small smile to your face. Her warm voice was enough to make you feel comforted, even if it wasn’t able to much else, “did something happen at work?”

“No,” god, were those tears welling up in your eyes already? When you hadn’t even said anything to her? You sucked in a breath, quickly trying to compose yourself, “I just haven’t been feeling well, and I’m starting to get a little worried. I’m never sick, and this has been lingering for days now-”

“You’re current on all your vaccines and everything else, right?”

“Yes. Everything is in order, but I’ve just been feeling sick, like almost every day and it doesn’t seem to be going away,” you explained, noting that the feeling was still overwhelming you, even in that moment. No rest for the wicked, you supposed, “and I’m trying not to panic, but it’s been hard and I’m stressed and I kind of just want to know what’s going on. I hate to burden you, but I don’t know who else to ask.”

“It’s okay, you know you can talk to me about anything,” the soft lilt in her voice was enough to put you at ease, even if it was only for the time being, “do you have some time to come over and I can get you checked out?”

“Sure, yeah, I can be over in a little bit, is that okay?” 

“Of course,” she promised, “just try and relax, sugar pie, everything will be just fine. We’ll get to the bottom of it.”

“Thanks, Connie,” you let out a baited breath you didn’t know you were holding in, thankful to have such a good and kind friend, “I’ll see you shortly.”

Placing the receiver back in the cradle, you organized things on your desk before grabbing your purse and heading out. It was so slow, the phone having not even rang a single time throughout the day, that you didn’t even bother to let anyone you were leaving. If it was something that important, than they would know where to find you.

Later that evening, as you sat on your couch, once again eating ice cream and watching old movies, you wondered if you should have gone to Connie. You were still processing the news, both shocking and disconcerting, tears streaming down your cheeks. She had graciously offered you her company for the night, but you had turned her down. You just needed some alone time. It may not have been the best idea, but right now it was the only thing you desired.

You almost laughed at yourself, finding it ironic that you were in such a pathetic state of existence yet again. But right now it was about all you could mentally handle at the moment. 

You cleaned off the last bit of ice cream from your spoon, and chucked the carton onto the table, pulling the blanket off of the back of the couch and draping it over yourself. 

Soon, the voices on the television began to sound more and more distant and your eyes grew heavier with each passing second. But, of course, just before you could find comfort in slumber, a knock came at your door and jarred you back into the present. You groaned as you wiped your red, puffy eyes, debating on ignoring the door. It was getting later into the evening, much too late for a social call, so you wondered who it was. The knocking didn’t seem to be ceasing any time soon; grabbing the blanket and wearing it as a cape, you trudged to the door, without even knowing to look through the small peephole.

Opening it, you let out a preemptive sigh and looked up, finding yourself looking back into the eyes that you loved and adored so much. Your heart leaped in your chest as the revelation washed over and your body seemed to relax, “Javi.”

“Baby,” he looked you over, his heart aching slightly as realized, almost immediately, that you had been crying. But you felt better now, your heart finding some peace and solace in the face that despite looking worn out and tired, he was safe and sound and home. You looked him up and down, finding it hard to hold back your smile when you realized he was holding a small bouquet of flowers in his hands, a beautiful combination of all of your favorites, “what’s wrong? You’ve been crying.”

“You’re back,” you couldn’t stop yourself from you throwing your arms around him and nuzzling your face into his neck. He responded in kind, wrapping you up in your arms, careful to make sure your flowers didn’t get crushed as he pressed soft kisses to the side of your head, “I’ve missed you so much.”

“I’ve missed you too,” he whispered in your ear, sending some shivers down your spine, “I’m sorry I didn’t call or anything, I wanted to surprise you. I hope I didn’t catch you at a bad time.”

“It’s never a bad time,” you promised him, taking his hand and leading him inside your apartment. You didn’t even know why you were still being so careful about people seeing you together. Everyone knew, or had strong suspicions by now, that the two of you were together, not that anyone was going to stop you, “when did you get back?”

“About five minutes ago,” he said with a small smile as he followed you into the kitchen where you grabbed a vase for the flowers, watching you intently. He’d missed every part of you; the way you moved, smelled, felt, talked - all of it. Somehow just knowing he was back was enough to make you feel better. Your worries were almost all gone, almost. 

You turned back to him, watching as he effortlessly leaned against the counter, looking even better than ever. Was it really possible for him to have gotten hotter? He held out his arms for you and pulled you against him, his large hands cradling your face as he peppered gentle kisses over every inch of your skin, stopping at your lips. Just before pressing a soft kiss to them, he whispered, “I love you, so much.”

“I love you too, Javi,” you traced your fingers over his faces, relearning all the highs and lows, the way his warm skin felt under your fingers. You touched his nose before stopping and giving it a kiss, “I’m so glad you’re home. Safe.”

“I told you there was nothing to worry about,” he closed his eyes and rested his forehead against yours, “I’ll always come back to you.”

Fuck. You had it bad, so bad, for this man.

“Tell me what’s wrong, baby. What’s got you so upset?” oh. Of course you should have known better than to expect that he would let it go. You thought about lying to him, but you knew he’s be able to see right through you, just as he always did. He was the only one who knew you better than yourself.

“Nothing,” you insisted, which wasn’t really a total lie, “just tired and missed you.”

“You’re still a horrible liar,” he insisted with a soft chuckle, “you can tell me anything, you know that.”

You did know that. In reality you told him everything, and usually anything, that crossed your mind. But how where you supposed to tell him this when you hadn’t even admitted it out loud to yourself? How was he even going to react? You were scared, so scared, and had no clue to what his response would be. Normally you’d be able to gauge his reaction pretty well, but with this? You had no clue. 

Would he be mad? Excited? Scared? Worried? Upset? 

“Hey,” he put a hand under your chin and tilted your face up towards him, “baby, what’s wrong? Why were you crying?”

“Javi,” you let his name linger between the two of you, the air growing thick with nerves and anticipation. Your mind was racing almost as fast as your heart, and before you could even fully think about what you were going to say, the words came out of your mouth anyway, “I’m pregnant.”

Your hand flew to your mouth as you covered, as if it would somehow make a difference now as Javi looked at you, blinking, and seemingly confused by your sudden confession. Your stomach was in absolute knots as you took a step back and felt a few tears running down your cheeks, “I-I hadn’t been feeling well this week and went to see Connie, and found out today. I-I...I’m sorry, Javi, I-”

“You’re pregnant?” he finally said something, his voice cracking as you nodded your head, giving him a ghost of a smile, “wh-why are you sorry about that?”

“I didn’t...we didn’t...this just happened,” before you could form any coherent thoughts or make any sort of statement, he hoisted you onto the kitchen counter and wrapped his arms around you, this time burying his face into the juncture of your neck and shoulder.

“You’re pregnant,” he stated as you nodded. He reached up and tenderly wiped away the tears that were running down your cheeks. Unless it was a trick of the light, you were sure that there were some tears in his eyes too, “do you know how far along?”

“They estimate about 9 weeks,” you said quietly, watching as the smile on his face spread across all of his features, “you’re not mad?”

“Mad? Why the hell would I be mad?” he asked as you shrugged, “look, baby, I know this isn’t perfect, our lives are far from perfect, but that doesn’t take away from how wonderful this. Things rarely go according to plan, but that’s okay. We adapt, improvise, and overcome.”

“Yeah?” you asked quietly as he nodded. He was right: this might have been the worst time for you to fall pregnant, but he was still happy. You were going to be okay, all of this would be okay, you knew that now. All because of Javi.

“Yeah,” he promised, trying to process everything in his mind, but the only thing he could see clearly was you; you and the future life and family the two of you would be building, “god, I love you so much. This is...everything. You are everything.”

By now you were a flat out crying mess, in combination to his words and raging hormones, but it didn’t matter. Because this was it, this was everything. Things weren’t perfect, hell, they never would be, but you weren’t going to be alright. You and Javi would make it through anything together.

thunderous - mmm, yeah at first i totally agreed, i think they suffer from too much good music syndrome, that all their other tracks are such fucking bops its hard to stay at that level of perfection. the choreo was beautiful tho and tbh, the track has grown on me since ive been watching all the vids abt it. its my brothers favourite track

domino - YES GODAMMIT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE TITLE TRACK. the raps, the vocals, the vibes, the fucking domino sound in the back? i would have streamed that shit on repeat. but tbh, as good as it is, it doesnt have that sort of grandness/oomph that skz seems to like in their title tracks so i can see why they chose thunderous (tho domino would have been so good) *sigh*

ssick - yeah same, not my fave track by a long mile, the crowd cheering was a ?strange? choice and the chorus was a bit bare/empty, plus like i mentioned earlier, it was kinda funny to me for some reason but ill still play it if im playing thru the whole album

the view - ahh one of those not like other girls (/j) i honestly think its just a good party song, just a bop to play in the background when nobodys rlly paying much attention. its pretty generic pop music but catchy

secret secret - YES its so good! its such a chill song and i love their vocals in it. the combination of lo-fi/fake strings backup stuff and their heavenly vocals just makes it *chefs kiss* im listening to it rn and just... its so beautiful. it gives me pumped up another day vibes ya know? like my pace is edgy get cool, this one is energetic another day i feel like. overall i love it

STAR LOST - ah thats so cool! i didnt know that! on first listen this song had a similar vibe to secret secret but then the beat came in and ahh its such a good song. i can totally imagine them putting this song to a concert footage vid, this song is so sweet.

surfin’ - yes lmao its always a shock, i feel like they should have put gone away in between them, but its such a fun cute song, i cant get rlly mad. yeah, as an aussie i think im contractually obligated to like beaches lol. sand im not such a fan of, but my familys rlly into fishing and my brother loves bodyboarding so we stay at a beach house at least twice a year and we live like 5 mins from 3 different beaches (hehe all aussie cities are on the coast lol) so thats cool. do you like beaches?

gone away - ah gone away my beloved, i love this song sm, its just so pure and showcases their vocals and lyrics so well. yes the pitch change is very out of the blue, i feel liek they went directly from seungmins soft vocals to hans powerful ones which was an interesting choice, but hey, im not complaining

wolfgang - YES IKR ah im so happy he got to be included in that era and song. yeah its such a full on song i cant rlly listen to it if im in a quiet mood but its very motivating :)

The DeLeon Dad Debate

Based on this ask I sent this person. 

Q: Is Typhon abusive?

My personal answer: Yes. Was he meant to be? 

No way in hell. 

Typhon DeLeon is compared to Jack by some people. Here’s the thing: Jack was meant to be A: the bad guy, and B: an abusive father. Typhon? I don’t think so. 

The parells between Jack and Typhon are in the third link, so I’m skipping them. Besides, they aren’t what I’m really complaining about. I am complaining about the entire DeLeon brood. Except Troy and Leda, because they are not the players in this game. 

I recommend reading Border-Spam’s response/analysis first, because it provides more context and insight. 

The two characters I’m going in on for existing are Tyreen and Typhon. These two are the primary problems in the DeLeon lore, because the only detailed explanations for what happened comes from them. We do get Troy’s take on things on Eden-6, but he doesn’t really go in depth or beyond “Yeah, we had a hard childhood and dad didn’t make it any better.” Troy isn’t lying, unlike either Ty or Typhon could be, because he literally has no reason to. He also has no reason to be telling the player what he does - he seems like he’s venting there, after having a fight with Tyreen. 

Now, before I really get into this, abuse is the practice of hurting your children, in any way, shape or form, regardless of your actual feelings towards them. It isn’t always physical, and more importantly, an abusive parent can still feel love toward their kid. Keyword: feel love, not actually love. Typhon was an abusive parent who felt love towards his kids. I think he was supposed to, anyway.

The DeLeon Debate has two sides: Tyreen’s side, and Typhon’s. 

Typhon is implied to have doted on Tyreen multiple times, and admits that he was a terrible father. Typhon calls the Twins monsters not for Ty’s powers, but their actions. Typhon’s side is that he was a clueless father trying his best, but ultimately failing despite his best efforts and intentions. 

Tyreen is, in contradictory, implied to have been ignored in favor of taking care of Troy. It’s also canon (not in the actual game, screw you Randy) that Typhon refused to touch her after Leda’s death. Tyreen’s suspected ordeal is that, because of her distance from her father, she turned cold and out of touch with her own humanity. 

Against Typhon, we have him physically and probably emotionally neglecting his child, possibly hating or fearing her after Leda’s fridging. Border-Spam pointed out that both of the Twins believe that Typhon saw Tyreen as a monster, which hints that something happened that instilled that belief. Probably the “No hug for you” thing. Also, TYPHON LITERALLY CALLS THEM MONSTERS IN GAME. Just a thought. Troy apparently wasn’t spared either, saying that Typhon thought he was a freak - and the little amount of concern when he learns of his son’s death supports this. 

Against Tyreen, we have...

Nothing to do with her relationship with her father. A lot against her as a person, but in regard to who was the problem in the family? Everything points to Typhon. 

So, we sided with and hero-ified an abuser. 

Remember Borderlands 2? When the bad guy was abusive to his daughter and it was like, the real reason you had to kill him? Like, everything else he had done didn’t matter, he had to die because he was an abusive dad? 

I don’t even know how to explain or justify or figure out how the hell this happened. I don’t know what went through the writing team’s head. I can’t tell you what they tried ot do - I can only tell you what they messed up.

They tried to make every single character sympathetic. 

Example: Katagawa is, arguably, the better-written villain in BL3, just because he’s entertaining and consistent as a character. However, this is one of the examples of the writers trying to make everything angsty. 

His name. His name is Junior Katagawa, or reversed, whichever way. We never learn what the ‘junior’ part is. This is because the writers wanted to make him look and feel insignificant. Tyreen mocks him during that quest on Skywell by calling him Junior. They tried to take his individuality away from him by making him a pawn of his father and the company. 

The bar code on his neck. The thing with that was to demonstrate how little Maliwan cared about it’s employees. But Katagawa isn’t an employee, he’s the head of Mergers and the next in line to inherit the company. It’s another attempt at devaluing him as a person. 

Finally, we have the fact that, apparently, Katagawa has so little ability in friendship that the entire Atlas-Maliwan war was because he wanted to be friends with Rhys, and befriending him by force was the only way how. 

That’s all fine and dandy, but did we need that? Why couldn’t he have just been a spoiled Daddy’s Money baby? He already is in game, because none of the things I listed are actually mentioned or are barely hinted at. What was the point? 

Sympathy. Sympathy was the point. 

Ava? No one likes her, but you’re supposed to because ~her parents died~ and you need to feel sympathy for her. 

What they did with Typhon and Tyreen, was that they started by making Ty’s Sympathy Points based of of an abusive, negligent father. You could kinda get her if you thought about it. Jack was implied to be abused, too. 

Tyreen could have been brushed off as just lying to you, but when Troy comes in and confirms it without any drama or flair, just quiet, awkward, and shy? Their backstory is an abused one and you can’t argue against it. 

Then Typhon comes in. 

When Typhon comes in, the writers have to undo and reverse all the damage against his name and parenting skills. Someone realized they can’t make an alleged abusive father look like a good guy, so they make him admit he was bad and hope for the best. They tried so, so hard to give Typhon Sympathy points that they ended with a merry-go-round of He-Said-She-Said where neither Typhon nor Tyreen come out sympathetic. Tyreen comes out a manipulative brat who abused her brother, and Typhon as an abusive, pig-headed egomaniac, and you can’t find anything likable about either. 

I think Typhon was meant to be a bad father - I don’t think he was meant to be abusive. My bet is that the writers went overboard trying to make the Twins sympathetic, and when they added Typhon to the story, realized that they couldn’t make the player side with an abuser and get away without scathing criticism.
