"BUT THE REAL DIVERSION IS PUGH'S PRINCESS IRULAN..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on film stills of English film actress Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan of the Bene Gesserit in the American epic science fiction film "Dune Part 2" (2024). Costume Design by Jacqueline West. 📸: Niko Tavernise/Warner Bros. Pictures.
OVERVIEW: "But the real diversion is Pugh’s Princess Irulan, whom [Jacqueline] West describes as the film’s voice of reason. To that end, she wanted to eschew the grand headpieces in favor of a more subtle nod to her Bene Gesserit roots. Irulan is often seen in smaller, metallic headpieces, which West likens to armor. “She’s the moral compass in "Dune Two."
[The Bene Gesserit have] been assigned to control the future and make it go on a certain path. She sees through that and she’s playing the long game,” she says. “She’s seen beyond the manipulations of Bene Gesserit, so I kept her out of that a bit.” Still, she managed to incorporate the nun look into Pugh’s costume.
"I remember when I was a little girl, how the nuns’ habits framed their face. I tried to do that with her, to keep a certain aspect of the Bene Gesserits without giving her the shape, the Virgin Mary-esque mantle," she says. "I thought I could do that best with headdresses.""

1984's The Last Starfighter was one of the first movies to extensively use CGI, with 27 minutes and 300 computer-generated scenes. It's estimated that doing so took only half the time and possibly as low as one-third of the budget it would have required otherwise (the overall movie budget was $14M with the CGI contract at 4.5M). CGI was accomplished using FORTRAN on a Cray X-MP supercomputer. Greetings, Starfighter, you have been recruited… on Sci-Fi Saturday!!

Next on the Sci-Fi marathon is the follow up to Ridley Scott's Prometheus: Alien Covenant (2017.) Ridley would also direct this movie.
Canonically this movie takes place in the year 2104, a decade after the events in Prometheus. Here's the synopsis for the film:
"A colonization ship named Covenant is en route to the planet Origae-6 when a freak accident causes the ship to be damaged and crew awakened from hypersleep. Upon commencing repairs, the crew discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination."
This movie stars Michael Fassbender (reprising his role of David from Prometheus and as Walter another android created by Weyland Industries,) Katherine Waterson, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride and Damien Bechir.
I have to admit, I've never watched this movie before. I'm curious to see the connection Covenant has to Prometheus and to the next film in the canon timeline: Alien (1979). On a side note, if there has ever been a movie poster influenced by the art and influence of H.R. Giger, this one is it.

Whenever I catch myself criticizing or nitpicking anything about the Denis Villeneuve Dune movies as all other sci-fi nerds probably do, I consider they could have hired Zack Snyder to turn it into a Chris Pratt vehicle and I just shut up forever and think they are 100% perfect.
