Another wordgirl au!! This one is called the “To be me again” (“me again” for short) Au!!

In this au, Steven Boxleitner struggles for control over Twobrains, saying he’d give his right arm to be himself again. Later that week, wordgirl stumbles across him in a battle of wills where Twobrains severely injures her. Before too much is done, however, Steven takes control and turns his dominant arm into goop. The pain causes him to pass out, which wordgirl and the henchmen use as an open opportunity to get Steven the surgery he needs to regain his sanity. When Steven wakes up, he is overjoyed. The robot arm he later receives takes a little getting used to, but Steven is just glad to be himself again.

Fictionkin/OCkin shifting is unironically the weirdest, most trippy shit I've ever experienced

Whilst shifting to Silver Boxleitner, I unironically believed my family wasn't my family

I looked at my mom and was like "who the fuck is this lady. That is not my mother. Where is my Dad (Twobrains). Where are the Henchmen. Why am I in the suburbs. This is not Fair City. I do not belong here. At all. What the fuck"

Meanwhile the part of me that's still myself is quietly saying "You're just shifting, this is your house, that is your mother, you don't live in Fair City."

Oh and then the part where I unironically believed I was in the 5th grade for a hot minute. I am in middle school

Like okay shifting into one of my theriotypes/kintypes it's just "arg want to be animal". Fictionkin shifting is the most bizzare experience I've ever had

More headcanons :3 This time, sickfic style headcanons about TwoBrains catching a germ from one of his mice and needing to get help from his sworn enemy, and, coincidentally, a vet scientist - Glen Furlbam

While TwoBrains is in his lab displaying his latest invention to his henchmen, he gets distracted by something that smells... off

He sniffs around the lab, past his blackboard, past the scattered mess of wires and metal from building his ray, over to where his pet mice nest

Worried, he starts sifting through their nests, giving them all sniffs. The domesticated mice don't mind, playing with him and leaning into his touch, while the wild mice he keeps are very much displeased, some even biting or scratching him, but he checks them all out of concern

Finally, as he uncovers the last mouse - his pet Tallulah - he realizes what the smell is. Tallulah is very sick and smells of germs (he remembers that mice can smell when their fellows are ill)

TwoBrains sets up a makeshift microbiology lab, using an old terrarium as an incubator and setting gelatin in the lid of his cheese ball container to use as a plate (like an agar plate in a real lab)

However, after a few days of caring for Tallulah, he begins to notice his breathing getting labored and his eyes feeling funny while trying to examine the makeshift plate for bacterial colonies.

Concerned, the henchmen tell him to take a break

He calls their concerns poppycock, saying that should be the word of the day, and tries to keep working

However, he keeps getting sicker, to the point where he lets the henchmen make him a little nest on the cheese couch and lead him to sit down

Doc falls into a fevered sleep, and the next time he wakes, he's delirious and in terrible shape

TwoBrains is far too sick to play doctor for himself, and none of the doctors in Fair City would know what to do, since he caught the disease from a fellow rodent (plus, they don't see villains). Worse still, Dr. Robert Tubing is out of town

The henchmen remember that fellow villain Glen Furlblam works as a microbiologist at Fair City Veterinary Hospital (that's where he got his litter of grumpy kitties, and the job is an outlet for his love of science)

When TwoBrains is hauled to Glen's work during his lunch break looking sick as a dog - er, sick as a mouse - Glen's first instinct is to turn him away

"Oh, so the great Doctor Two-Brains needs my help? After he called me a second-rate villain? Forget it."

But he can't help but feel compassion when he sees just how dangerously sick his enemy is

Telling the henchmen that the doctor will owe him one for this and claiming he's only doing it because he needs TwoBrains to be well enough for a villainous rematch, he begins tending to him

He sneaks TwoBrains into the microbiology lab and begins running all sorts of tests on him

Glen, who secretly has a crush on TwoBrains and can't help but be tender with him despite his performative hatred, makes TwoBrains a nest out of spare lab coats and personally helps him eat and makes sure he stays hydrated while the tests are being run

He diagnoses TwoBrains and figures out what medications him and his pet Tallulah will need, smuggling the doctor and the medications out of the hospital when his shift ends

Not wanting to leave the doctor alone while he heals, Glen continues to go to TwoBrains' lair every day after work, making sure him and his pet takes their medicine and checking on them

In his state of delirium, TwoBrains wakes up and finds Glen cradling his head, gently administering his medicine, and he finds all of his hidden endearment for his enemy bubbling to the surface. In his dreamlike feverish state, TwoBrains tells Glen he cares for him before drifting back to sleep

Glen's face flushes, and he pretends he didn't hear it and that he doesn't care, but deep down he's a mess about it

When TwoBrains comes out of his fever the next day and the meds kick in, he's immediately furious and confused why Glen is in his lab, and he demands to know why the henchmen let him in

Glen and TwoBrains start arguing, with Glen acting like he did it for selfish reasons and TwoBrains acting like he would rather have gotten sicker then accept help from someone he hates

But after the initial conflict settles down and the two really think about it, they both know they care about each other

TwoBrains awkwardly thanks Glen, and Glen tells him it was no problem

Then Glen asks if TwoBrains really meant what he said

TwoBrains at first doesn't know what Glen is referring to, but then the memory hits him like a slap in the face - telling Glen he cares about him

TwoBrains gets angry at himself and flustered, but before he can answer, Glen says, "Never mind. People say weird things all the time when they're sick. But since you're better now, I guess I'll leave you to it."

Glen goes to leave, but TwoBrains calls out for him, awkwardly pausing and unsure of what to say, just knowing he doesn't want his enemy (and his crush?) to leave

He fakes a cough very phonily, claiming, "I think- I think I'm not feeling that great again all of a sudden."

Glen smirks. "Well, then I guess I'll have to stay longer. Not because I want to, of course."

The two spend the rest of the day together <3 <3 <3

twobrains x reader headcanons bc i can't be the only one simping for this guy. under the cut bc long post. minors beware, it gets a little suggestive at times (like pg-13 levels, i'm not putting straight up pr0n in the main tag like an animal)

-Dr. Two Brains is a man who is very free and unrestrained with physical affection. If he enjoys your company, expect him to be extremely touchy feely with you in an almost infuriatingly casual manner. He'll pull you in close, hold your hand just for the sake of it, snuggle up next to you if he's sitting down near you, or just keep an arm around your waist. He's also not above letting his hands wander into less innocent places (with respect for all boundaries, of course.)

-That being said, as open as he is with the physical and sensual side of things, emotional intimacy is where he struggles. He has a reputation as the most dangerous villain in the city to uphold, and feelings are complicated when you have two brains that hate each other, so he has to have complete and total trust in someone before he really lets them in. He sees vulnerability as very high risk/high reward.

-The mouse brain cares about nobody and nothing except for cheese. While Steven will love you dearly regardless of the mouse brain's opinions, Squeaky will either see you as a means to an end for more cheese, a tolerable neutral party, or a distraction from his ultimate goals, depending on how into cheese related crimes you are. There may be a bit of infighting between the two brains depending on how mean Squeaky decides to be about the whole situation.

-Dtb would never allow himself to hurt you. He may be grouchy at times, he may raise his voice in annoyance (and immediately regret it), he may break promises if it means he gets cheese out of it, but he would never lay a hand on you in anger. He isn't perfect, and he's certainly evil, but he draws the line at being abusive. That's one low he simply refuses to sink to.

-He makes an active effort to compliment you a lot, especially on specific things so you know he's being genuine. He's pretty fond of calling you cute or sweet, and he makes sure to let you know he thinks pretty highly of your intelligence to balance out how much he brags about his own. If you shoot him compliments back, it'll catch him off guard and he'll absolutely melt. As popular as he is as a villain, he's also still highly feared, so it's rare that he feels genuinely loved.

-As much as he wants to give you hickeys, he is also highly nervous about where the line between love bite and painful bite would lie when he has teeth that can chew through solid steel.

-He likes having you around while he's building rays. It's nice having someone to bounce ideas off of, and even if you don't fully understand how it all works, just giving him the chance to explain his process out loud if he's hitting a wall can help him realize exactly what may be going wrong.

-Sometimes he'll make an unnecessarily long string of really bad puns to annoy you because he thinks you're cute when you're suffering from his terrible almost-comedy.

-If you are not already an active villain, twobrains will offer to show you the ropes of doing crimes and help you plan out your first spree. Of course, if getting involved isn't really your deal, he'll be perfectly content with letting you hang back at his lair while he and the henchmen go on cheese heists, as long as you bring him a block of cheddar now and again when inevitably he ends up in jail again.

-If you ARE already a villain with a decent reputation, expect him to get just the slightest bit competitive about the title of top villain. He won't take it too far, but he definitely gets a little salty if you ever manage to rank higher than him, and then immediately tries to one up you with an extravagant heist, which, most of the time, will fail spectacularly. Also expect him to consider rampaging through the city while constantly slipping flirting in with the standard villain banter to be a date.

Now Presenting: I talk about my personal Boxlietner’s Return AU for an unfortunate amount of time

If Boxlietner ever returned this is exactly how I would want it to happen (ramble ahead)

-Some big horrible event happens and TB and Squeaky are constantly fighting over what to do

-TB is the only one who can save everyone, but to do that he has to overcome the mouse brain. This leads to a painful experience of him creating a ray that removes the mouse brain permanently

-maybe he gets someone else’s help to make the ray, narratively it would be the most interesting for WG or his henchmen to assist him while being incredibly pensive the whole time, and worrying about him as squeaky grows more and more frantic and aggressive but logically I think Mr Big or Tobey would be the most help

-One he’s separated from the mouse it can go one of two ways, either he collapses for the drama, OR one time I read this fanfic where he just straight up kills squeaky and I love that idea (it’s called For with that Grand Collision / Came a Grave Consequence by SylvesterSV on a03)

-One sticking point I have is that Boxlietner should NOT become this moral straight-man type. He’ll be less evil^TM ofc but I want it to be more like a Discord from MLP situation, where he still plays by his own rules. The mouse brain, whether it’s there or not, changed him fundamentally as a person

-So yeah, if this was in the actual show they should absolutely not show Squeaky dying, but Boxlietner definitely is not nice to him to an uncomfortable degree

-This is fan content though so Squeaky can die. And it should shock the people around him, like maybe Steven stands up and seems so happy to be back and remorseful for his actions, and Becky is really happy thinking she got her friend back, until Steven just, murders the mouse with a haunted look in his eye.

-Keep the long white hair but it’s not spikey anymore. Ponytail like in chucktopia I suggust

-His villian friends have no clue how to deal with this. Like absolutely no idea where to go from here

-Steven definitely has to deal with a lot of inner demons and probably exacerbates them himself, but he’s still gonna keep all the traits we love about both canon character(s?)

-He’s still a creative genius with a flair for flamboyancy and sarcasm, he’s overexcitable and forgetful but when he’s in the zone he’s the top of the game. Also he tried to avoid cheese out of guilt at first but it ends up becoming a comfort food

-It takes him a bit of time to come back to being himself, at first he’s very closed off and very in his head

-Wordgirl is really insecure about being around him, not sure how to treat him, and doesn’t know if he even wants her around, but she really wants to be around him like all the time when he gets back, especially with how worried she is about him

-Steven, who is greatly missing his former friendship/mentorship with Becky now that he remembers everything is also really insecure about their relationship

-he’s overly friendly to her but also keeps her at arms length and treats her like a fragile kid (which he never did even as twobrains) making Wg’s insecurities worse, making her think he doesn’t want her around, making him think she doesn’t want to be around him

-Becky can’t stand leaving things unresolved though so she eventually confronts him like “If you don’t want me around anymore just tell me!” and they work it out and begin healing

-Frequent nightmares involving rats and mice and evil laughter

-he’s like either 19 or 70 no one can tell (he’s 32)

-He’s still friends with the villains and sometimes they come to him for help on gadgets (more with the kids then the adults) but he generally won’t help if he thinks it might be too far against Wordgirl.

-The villains, Steven, and WG are are generally more understanding of each other then the rest of the city is to them anyways.

-After some time Becky just starts coming over all the time again, sometimes as WG and sometimes as Becky. Once he starts getting into the groove of inventing again she becomes like his little lab assistant because I said so

-The henchmen and him are best friends and regularly hang out together, but they work for Tobey now (as like a gift from Boxlietner)

-“Tobes, from one former evil genius to another, these guys are the best in the biz. They’ll do well by you”

-The henchmen immediately little-brotherify Tobey. Like Tobey is the smart one absolutely but the henchmen absolutely adore him and lowkey baby him after no time. Tobey has two new (admittedly dull) father/big brother figures now that he gets to spend all his time with because he deserves it

-Glenn doesn’t know what to do now and has a whole subplot of going on an epic journey to find himself and comes back an enlightened hippie because that would be funny. He tell’s Steven that he is “more reformed then you could ever dream to be”.

-Steven convinces Becky to tell her family that she’s Wordgirl. He holds her hand while she does it

-Becky (civilian form) starts getting “tutoring” from Boxlietner, who’s trying to come back to having a normal life in the public eye (He does help her with her homework but it’s just an excuse for them to be working together on bringing back Steven’s life and on superhero stuff without seeming like this random little girl is just spending a bunch of her time for no reason with a former supervillian grown man)

-One day Becky Scoops and Violet are having a playdate and Scoops says “man I wish we could go somewhere we haven’t played before” and Becky is like “dude I got you” and they just barge into Steven’s lab and the man (holding lava in a cup) is just “children what the fuck”

-on that note both Twobrains and reformed!Steven have absolutely no cursing filter around the kids. Granny May hit him with her purse for swearing multiple times

-unrelated to the au but Victoria actively tries to learn swear words from TB and later Steven. Eileen doesn’t care because it doesn’t match her innocent-baby shtick and Tobey considers it beneath him

-I can’t emphasize enough how much this man is going to be an absolute mess like he’s that specific brand of fucked up old man who’s not actually old. He’s trying so hard though, and getting better. I really like Bojack Horseman can you tell.

-Steven reaches out to his sister and neice with the encouragement of Becky, and reconnects with his family, who all thought he was dead

-His niece has a pet mouse. Steven panics upon seeing it and almost tries to off it before being brought back to his senses by Becky (who went with him to see his family because he needs support and because, yet again, I said so)

-His neice is a few years older then Becky and didn’t get the full details, so at first she thinks that this is just her adopted cousin. They bond while the adults talk

-Steven and the Botsford parents get along really well, they appreciate him convincing their daughter to c̶o̶m̶e̶ ̶o̶u̶t̶ tell them about her being Wordgirl, though they clearly wish that Becky had felt comfortable telling them herself.

-Steven becomes the wine uncle to the Botsford kids he was always meant to be

-Sally, as the DA, and Becky, as Wordgirl, help him get get his life together, and Sally and Becky bond over solving legal problems for this slightly pathetic man

-TJ has some angst about his sister being WG, but he gets over it. The siblings love each other at the end of the day

-Becky keeps trying to set twobrains up on dates. (Spoiler she has no fucking idea what she’s doing but she THINKS she does)

-She only chooses men at first, just kindof assuming he’s full on gay, until he tells her that he’s pan (bad idea) and a whole new world of possibilities opens up in Becky’s eyes.

-Poor Steven ends up on blind dates with half of Fair City. He rolls with it because Becky has had him captured in her found family web for years

-The dates don’t really go that well due to his reputation. like Steven is still very charming and social but he’s really pent up at the same time, plus people’s perception of him doesn’t help

-Eventually Becky starts setting him up on dates with Villains, which is like really awkward, until Steven realizes that these are the most relaxed and comfortable dates he’s been going on (like I mentioned before theres this understanding between the villains, wg, and Steven that the rest of the city doesn’t have)

-Pick your fav twobrains ship to become canon idc. Personally I like grilled cheese because Chuck is just this mother’s basement kinda guy and him dating this brooding, tortured brilliant scientist is very fun to me. Also subversion of the normal trope- Steven is the huge flirt and Chuck is the flustered mess who’s trying to stay serious

-“Uh huh yeah babe that evil plan is definitely going to work. After you get captured Wordgirl’s coming over for dinner by the way, you should join us!”

-Whoever Steven is dating suspiciously rises to the #1 villian spot. Becky is like 🤨 but Steven says that he’s definitely not helping them, he just must be so incredibly inspiring to be around, he swears

-Steven isn’t really siding with anyone, he kindof loses any care for Fair City, maybe even growing a bit bitter towards it, he just cares about specific people.

my brain decided to hit me with the following take on Dr. Twobrains with no warning:

So the psychologist B.F. Skinner was a big figure in the idea of behaviorism, a theory that every cognitive animal operates on the concepts of reward and punishment, where they repeat actions that result in some kind of pleasure and avoid those that result in pain, discomfort, or dissatisfaction. B.F. Skinner studied this concept through training rats to do different things. he would eventually famously come to the conclusion that free will is an illusion and we’re all just acting on reward and punishment.

Steven was combined with squeaky the mouse, (not a rat, but close!) and became Dr. Twobrains, a combination of the two personalities. This melding of the two of them seemed to have created a being that is compulsively follows the sources of pleasure for the two beings that make him up. Squeaky gets pleasure from cheese and evil, and this single minded drive for pleasure sources may have come from him, though two-brains also has the need to seek out something that would be a source of pleasure for a scientist and “creative type” like Steven: mental stimulation. this is why his schemes always have to be so overcomplicated, that’s the Steven half’s counterpart to Squeaky’s needs. In a certain sense Dr. Twobrain’s free will is an illusion, because he has to constantly do the only thing that generates pleasure for both of his halves: conduct overcomplicated evil schemes to steal cheese.

However, he does seem to have a higher level of autonomy when interacting with others, specifically word girl, his henchmen, and occasionally other villains. Essentially, he achieves more free will through the power of friendship.
