something that I find so interesting about Killer BOB as a concept, and something that for sure shaped my tastes in magical realism stories is that he’s an anomaly and he’s far from all powerful. he was a lesser spirit, something like MIKE's dog, a familiar. he stole MIKE's power and ascended.
despite the show's reputation for being so weird so random we're given the rules of how BOB operates and his limits very plainly. he needs a human host. he tried to posses Cooper's mother and Cooper himself as a child. he couldn’t get in.
My Life, My Tapes and The Secret Diary are showing us two halves of one narrative. Not just about two very similar people struggling to survive and navigate a world of violence but in how they fit into the timeline. As BOB's influence lessens in Cooper's life, he’s turned his attention to grooming Laura instead.
Cooper and Laura are his personal projects and they both beat him. Laura chooses death over possession and Cooper was such a lost cause that BOB tried to pilot his doppelgänger instead. and that also doesn’t work. we see in s3 that BOB is in fact being held captive inside of Mr. C. he’s not running the show anymore.
and Mr. C becomes the new anomaly. he wants to live outside the lodge, this place that births him raw and screaming from Cooper's trauma. this is a sympathetic motivation, to be honest. why would any creature want to live in hell. his solutions are irredeemable but we understand why he’s doing what he’s doing.

I will never get over Nine Inch Nails being. Literally In Twin Peaks. Like. You have this tiny, tiny podunk town, and this one bar that happens to get performances fairly regularly by some incredible if mostly obscure artists. Then you are blasted, early-mid episode of part eight of Twin Peaks, the Return, by this old man with a PINE CONE on his microphone telling announcing "Ladies and Gentlemen, the roadhouse proudly welcomes... THE NINE INCH NAILS." And then they are fucking THERE. Like. I can recognize Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Mariqueen Maandig by sight, and that is THEM, they are in Twin Peaks putting on SUCH A GOOD SHOW. And with a song that may as well be about Laura fucking Palmer. Trent is putting his entire Rezussy into it, he's on his knees, he is moving and SCREAMING those vocals. How do you think they coordinated that. Do you think this alternate reality version of Trent knew the history of the town and decided 'yeah this would fuck severely.' Did they contact NIN somehow? Did the Forces teleport them not this universe for the sole purpose of an insanely badass leadup to resurrecting BOB. David Lynch will never explain, because he is not an explainer, so I'm going to make up an incredibly unhinged explanation myself for fun. Also the performance lights were perfectly suitable to my photosensitivity, which I love them for! The rest of the episode gave me a seizure though lmfao

They noted this on her chart: 8:38 A.M. After which, according to their records, Annie lapsed back into her impenetrable isolation and did not utter another word. The doctor on call noted this on her chart:
“May have been responding to auditory hallucination.”

the fact is that the second cooper drives into the town of twin peaks he is doomed to be there forever. because the fact is that cooper is symbolic for the town itself. they are tied and can't be seperated, and having cooper be an fbi agent is what makes it so enticing? like a big part of being an fbi agent is you go somewhere, you solve a case, you leave. but cooper, immediately upon arriving to twin peaks, has a sense of oneness with it. "i've never seen so many trees in my life."
later we learn how special twin peaks is because it's beautiful and there are kind people with good food who all care about each other. the world of twin peaks is odd and apart from everything else in a lovely way. just like cooper. odd but lovable. odd but fundamentally good. just like cooper. but there is a darkness in the woods of twin peaks. odd in a bad way. odd but scary. just like cooper. cooper is scary, he can suddenly be very cold and detached. he's a very sexual man, which isn't inherently bad, but his sexual attraction in canon is towards audrey, who is 18- and annie who is 20 and a former nun. you could argue that the darkness in the woods of twin peaks is the darkness that exists in men even as otherwise good like dale cooper. cooper entering the lodge for audrey/annie (since they serve the same narrative purpse) is a classic fight between the good and evil within cooper, and which one is going to win out, which one is stronger. remember the first scene cooper and audrey meet? look at her cardigan. it's trees.
i think that's why it's so interesting that in the return lynch had cooper in vegas when his memories were gone after leaving the lodge. he cannot be in vegas because he and twin peaks are synonymous! in vegas he has brief moments of remembering who he is: one being audrey's red pumps.
later, when he does fully come back to himself, he has to come back to twin peaks for laura because he thinks he can go back in time and save her from leland killing her, you could even think of this as an overcorrection i think, and in doing so he destroys an entire timeline and universe. but even in doing so when laura sees the house it all comes flooding back. she's still laura. it still happened. you can't erase trauma. you can't change what happened. twin peaks s3 leaves us cold and dangling with no and it's so hard and painful to accept but it's the fundamental core of coop's character to try so hard to be good that he ends up tearing everything apart.

I stopped being able to access this copyright blocked Utena/Twin Peaks essay from a defunct YouTube, and I thought it was worth preserving. I tried to track down any other social media presence for this person besides their abandoned YouTube without any luck.
It's really interesting! The similarity between Anthy and Laura was what got me thinking about this at first, but I didn't really think about the Cooper and Utena parallels.
(it spoils just about everything)

Hot take: the real reason Josie Packard shot Coop is because she was the only one who could see the bisexual love triangle forming between herself, Harry, and coop, and she needed to put one of them out of their misery
Edit: this is a joke
