the implications of ford pulling this photo out of his trenchcoat in the last episode you guys… THE IMPLICATIONS.

look at the state of this thing!! look at its rips! the stain in the bottom right corner! it’s dog-eared, the color is faded, the paper has browned… he’s kept this photo of them since they were kids. through all the years he stubbornly swore to hold a grudge, all the years he and stan never spoke, he kept this photo.

and we can assume he probably didn’t have it dimension-hopping, since i find it hard to believe he would’ve had it on him when he initially got sucked in, but ford pulling it out of his trenchcoat here!! implies!! that he had been CARRYING IT AROUND WITH HIM for some time after he got back!

imagine if he found it in some of his old stuff the night he returned, after punching and yelling at stan, after being sure to keep as much emotional distance between them as possible, and he finds this photo. would he have stared down at it? for a little while? smoothed the creases out on his desk? thumbed the torn, loved edges while he mourned a simpler time? then pocketed the thing to always have it with him?

i dunno. maybe i’m looking too far into it. but i can’t help but wonder if ford kept it because, against all his big dreams and ambitions, deep down he always wondered what his life might have been like if he sailed away with his brother when they were teenagers. never able to throw it away because doing so would symbolically destroy the last remnants of a childhood fantasy, the last piece of him that remains young and hopeful of a future at his brother’s side.

My hurdle in writing Shen twins/bros AUs is always the fact that a backstory which produces a Shen Jiu will never be a backstory that produces a Shen Yuan. You have to change fundamental parts of one of them if you want them to share an upbringing.

AUs that maintain the element of SY being a transmigrator work the best in that regard, because he can still have 20-some years of being a spoiled son, but even then, the more horrors of SJ's childhood that SY experiences, the more SY would be changed. SY thinking he's fine because it's just a story or because he's mentally an adult would not prevent SY from getting traumatized. Similarly, an AU where SJ grows up as the well cared for second Shen son is going to result in a very different man, because SJ is so heavily shaped by his trauma.

I think this is part of why I find them easier to write as parent and child; the fic conventions are that if SJ is SY's parent, then SJ has clawed himself to a higher position where he can offer SY comfort and stability, and if SY is SJ's parent, then SY changes SJ by giving him an un-traumatizing childhood. Either way, it makes sense for them to be those versions of themselves in that story.

Art wants a baby. He and you have spoken about you getting off the pill. For a few months now you’ve been debating. Making a pros and cons list was first: Art was an amazing partner, the love of your life. But you were anxious about the responsibility of it all, the stress and financial strain, the possible strain on your relationship. Not to mention that the hormonal and physical changes in your body was enough to outweigh every single pro on the list you scribbled on the side of the New York Times.

But Art’s face when he made love to you made you want to do whatever he asked of you. His hips bucked into you, soft whimpers warm against your lips. He rested his forearms by your ears as he thrusted.

“I love you so much,” he cooed. “Want to give you a baby.”

Your nails dug into his back, a silent urge for him to go faster. He did, pulling your legs over his shoulders, kissing your ankles. His hips rolled and beads of sweat dripped onto your stomach, your forehead, in between your collarbones.

“Do it,” you said. You didn’t know why it came out—maybe your subconscious became known during intimacy, maybe it was the peaking pleasure making you lie. But you didn’t take it back. “Do it, I’m off of birth control.”

“Are you serious?” His smile was distracting, given the circumstances, but you nodded, pulling his face in.

His thumb pressed against your lips, and you let him in as he spilled inside of you, a rare occasion.

Art looked at where your bodies met.

“Do you think it’s gonna be a boy or a girl?”

You rolled your eyes. “It’s gonna take awhile to get pregnant. Don’t get your hopes up this time around.”

“I think I have pretty strong swimmers.” He rested his forehead against yours, nuzzling into you.

And two weeks later when your period hadn’t come yet, you thought back to that moment. As you and Art went grocery shopping, you snuck a pregnancy test into the cart.

“What’s this?” He snatched the box from beneath a loaf of bread.

You shrugged. “Just seeing if your swimmers are as strong as you say.”

Art stood outside of the bathroom as you tested, his ear pressed against the door.

“Can I come in?”

“I want it to be a surprise!”

Art groaned. “It’s gonna be a surprise no matter what!”

“Two more minutes.”

When you showed him the test and assured him that two distinct lines did in fact mean you were pregnant, he started crying. Big fat happy tears that stained the collar of his shirt and rolled off the edge of his lips.

“We’re gonna be parents?”
