As the camera flickers to life, three young men and two young women stand in front of you, each one wearing a different, yet somewhat unreadable expression.

"Finally! Took me forever! Ahem... I'm Lucien Mulberry, and I'm excited to meet everyone~."

"I'm Yuki Miyamoto. Don't try anything, Darling. I guarantee if there's anything you're trying to pull on me, I'm already ten steps ahead of you, though it would be most amusing to watch you try~."

The man chuckles, seeming to be off in his own little world, but still somehow mysterious in an eerie manner.

"H-Hijiri Okinawa... Sorry, I-I'm kind of sensitive to loud noises... B-But I'm really excited to meet new people-!"

He seems very soft-spoken and gentle, but very fearful of a potential bad interaction.

"I'm Shiori Matsuzaka... I don't want any trouble. I'm just trying to mind my business and search for what I need. Don't be weird and we'll get along well, I think."

She doesn't seem overly serious, but more determined.

And finally, the final girl flashes you a seductive smile as she grins.

"And I'm none other than Miyu Toraijin, niece of Beelzebub, himself! And of course, you probably know me as the Ultimate Vampire. Stay out of my way and I won't make you my meal... unless you're into that~."

She winks, opening her mouth to show you a set of fangs before retracting them. They're actual vampires?! What do you do?!

Uses neo-pronouns because they're "adorbs" , but most of the time uses she/her , forgetting she uses neo pronouns (she puts it to her convinience lol)

I gave her less pickle-y looking hair, and made her hair a mix of her OG hair and Haiji's hair, since her OG hair doesnt make sense, so i added haijis hair. I also Fixed her chair, giving it more personality like add little stickers to the bottom of her chair, and her chair can open/close , and she put important items like byakuya's key and other stuff. She also likes her presence known so she can have attention, so she added bells. I gave her a more childish but professional outfit, i feel like it matches her better.

Speaking of learning shit about Haiji. Just. *sigh* Okay. We're going to talk about that moment real quick.

Okay. What is this. Why is this here.

As near as I can tell, this is meant as a funny joke. Toko gets on her shit, only for Haiji to suddenly out-perv her. With Komaru delivering the, "Well, THAT just happened," style punchline, clearly as uncomfortable as the audience is to have to listen to this exchange.

And. Like. Haiji's fucking scum. He is the brother of the "Monaca's father and brother beat her into a wheelchair". And while she'll later be revealed to be faking her disability (and we will GET to that, don't you worry), the fact remains that Tokuichi and Haiji found "Monaca is permanently disabled from all the physical abuse we sling at her" to be a perfectly believable story. That says a lot.

This man is a monster. So it's not exactly any sort of derailment for him to turn out to be a pedo too.

But it's just weird to have a character ostensibly on our side casually confess to that sort of thing like he's telling you his favorite fast food joint. And then for the story to just move on like that didn't happen. We just move right along, chilling with our bestie Haiji and helping him carry out his plan. The rest of the scene is just talking shop about how we're going to defeat the Warriors of Hope. It doesn't even merit a comment outside of Komaru's one line up there.

It's so irrelevant to the character, to the story, to this very scene, that it becomes baffling. Like. We had a whole-ass chapter dedicated to a child prostitute and the intense grief, trauma, and fucked up mental state it put her in. And then this is just here one chapter later as a throwaway joke.

Show someone your fucking script.

since it's the anniversary of udg, i'm wondering what are your opinions on it. personally, i liked the story a lot. :)

Like a lot of people, I have very mixed feelings about Ultra Despair Girls. Narratively, I think it's an exceptionally strong entry that provides elaboration and closure on a lot of themes that the other games and DR3 either left hanging or didn't discuss at all.

Emotionally, it provided some of the most poignant moments in the entire series. It is exactly what I would want out of a story exploring the Tragedy on a more direct level, outlining more clearly how it came about without getting bogged down in technicalities or vaguely handwaving for the purposes of mystery. And I, personally, enjoyed the gameplay!

But there are also things about the game that make it difficult to recommend wholeheartedly. The nature of exploring trauma in depth, especially when such trauma is a part of a cycle of violence, is that it is very, very uncomfortable to watch, and even worse to be a part off. Kotoko's minigame is the famous example of this, but watching Masaru beat himself into submission occupies a similar, haunting space in my head.

The nature of games as interactable makes this a vastly more uncomfortable space - asking players to look at and acknowledge the sexual violence Kotoko underwent is very, very different from asking them to participate in the sexual violence she tries to perform in turn on Komaru, even as fighting against it. The narrative purpose for the minigame is lost in the magnified horror players have from being involved in the process.

In a lot of ways, I think Ultra Despair Girls' messages get lost in its own delivery of them. Realizing what Haiji's pedophilia and abuse means for Monaca's life until now is overshadowed by Komaru talking about how she thinks his pedophilia is hot; realizing that Kotoko's minigame is intended to emphasize the theme of cyclical violence is lost in the perverted way Danganronpa treats its female characters in general. Ultimately, I think that Ultra Despair Girls is an incredible story with massive depth if you only look at it on a larger level, but because of the writers' and game designers' choices, this is lost in some of the granular details.

All of which is to say: I, personally, love Ultra Despair Girls. But it's not universally so for very good reason!

I noticed how Ryoma said something about Haji seeming familiar, and I'm just curious if that line is going to be relevant later or if it was just a throw away line because of Haji's... uhm... *cough*... controversial tastes and Ryoma's childlike appearance

The line was absolutely not a throwaway, nor in reference to Ryoma’s appearance. It has relevance to the story that will become apparent as things unfold. The most I can reveal right now is that it will have something to do with someone’s memories.

Apologies for the ramble, but I feel this is something important to mention.

The decision to include Haiji Towa, and to make him the Prologue’s victim, were all made after careful deliberation and much added research as well as mental health care on my end. Due to circumstances I’d rather not elaborate on, this was a decision that, out of all of them, was the most difficult to make. Not just because I was worried I could not do justice to the topics that come with even considering using this character, but also because of my own personal issues making it more difficult for me as the writer. However, for the story I wish to tell, his inclusion was one I felt was needed. I had always intended the Fangan to open with Hina waking up to a murder, but no matter who I put in that slot initially, no one seemed to fit without feeling either contrived, cruel, or even too humorous. Once I put Haiji there, however, the rest of the outline fell into place. And so he stays as our first body in the Underworld Academy, never to leave again. 

While I am here, I would also like to assure everyone reading this story: 

There will be no jokes in regards to any topics of a mature nature. Meaning things like Mikan’s tendency to fall, the actions of Haiji Towa, Ryoma’s prison time, and other such things will be treated with as much care as I can possibly give them. There will also be no jokes of that nature in regards to character appearances such as Ryoma’s. And most importantly, almost every character in this story will be given as much screen time and respect as possible within the confines of the plot. 

Haiji Towa is a character who deserves no screen time and no respect. And as such, he was the perfect choice to have as the Prologue victim. 

Going forward, Haiji Towa’s impact on the plot, while it will happen, will be miniscule in the grand scheme of things. He will be brought up again maybe once or twice after the Prologue, but that will be it. After those moments, he is dead to the world. 

As will be said by Fuyuhiko, Sayaka, Celest, and Nagisa in the upcoming parts of the Prologue: “He will not be missed.”

Monaca Towa

I have a feeling that Monaca is a bit like Cruella and/ or Himiko Toga. She already had some questionable tendencies that only worsen with the way she was treated; she just needed some help but we know how that ended up

Monaca def has a sibling complex. I think she always just wanted a family. No matter what, it's a fact: she was just a kid; a half-sibling was still a sibling to her, yet Haiji was absolutely disgusted by her very existence. (As someone with two older siblings I can't even imagine the pain)

I mean, just look at her wiki. The way it describes what others, what Haiji thought if her? Her own quotes? Yikes

Which is probably why she was so quickly and obsessively attached with Junko; the person who could be her sister—her family

Wanna know the 'best part'? It is canon that she knew perfectly well that Junko not only didn't actually care for them but was using them too. Ouch

Nagisa Shingetsu

Due to what his parents put him through, he abhors games where you have to grind or constantly level up.

He does however love cute casual/ mindless stuff; games where you can just turn off your brain and enjoy yourself—games where you don't need to be perfect, you can just be you

He is either completely terrified or utterly apathetic to needles. Like when the school nurse come to give the annual shot, he's either gonna break down or be like 'huh, another one.'

Pretty numb to sensations most of the time. Especially bad during exam week or if his parents have a new theory they wanna 'try out'

Kotoko Utsugi

Panics when men get into her personal space—espeacially fearful of the older/ bigger ones

Has dark tendencies too; it's unfair that she had to go through the abuse, so why not share the pain?

She'd tear some of the girls' skirt or top, or splash water onto them.

She wants other girls to be tainted so that she herself feels less dirty

When she used to act in school plays, she tried to spend as much time at rehearsals so that she didn't have to at her 'other job'

Probably has an eating disorder—mostly cause her mom keeps telling her she needs to be cute or else she is worthless

Jataro Kemuri

His obsession with hatred comes from the belief that while he is despised he is still paid attention too

Afterall, hate and love aren't opposites—they're paralells. Apathy is the true opposite

Jataro would pick being degraded and laughed at 1000× over being ignored

His worst experience was when his mom got so fed up that she didn't even get mad at him, just glared and walked away. A whole day of damning silence

Also, likely why he says random stuff; it confuses others and gives him their attention, if momentarily

Masaru Daimon

Due to his dad's addictions, Masaru flinches at the sight of a lighter

Additionally, he really hates strong smelling substances

He learnt how to patch himself and knew basic medical skills at a young age

As we've seen, he can also be self destructive; bruising himself when he feels like he's not living up to the title of 'Hero'

Lived off instant foods since his dad only gave him meager pocket change for it.

Now, onto the more light-hearted ones!

They like playing the Sims and/ or Minecraft together! Kotoko would design their characters and work with Jataro to build their house; Nagisa prefers playing free/ creative mode cause there's no goals or restrictions to abide; Masaru would likely be the only one hyped to finish certain milestones purely to brag; Monaca, well, she's gonna unleash all her pent up frustrations on those poor Sims/ mobs.

They used to have movie nights together! It was Kotoko's idea since it was an adorbs trend. Initially it was just the girls but eventually the guys joined too. They usually do it either at Monaca's place or very rarely at Jataro's.

They each have different love languages! Jataro's is physical touch, since he never recieved anything from his mother due to her disgust of him; Masaru's is words of affirmation as his dad never really said anything good about him and only talked when necessary; Kotoko's is quality time—since, prior to Monaca, people only interact/ spend time with her they have an ulterior motive; Nagisa's is acts of service—as he never had someone do something for him that didn't harm him; finally, Monaca's is gifts—she's the girl who has everything, but feels like she has nothing—a present, no matter how big or small, as long as it is genuine is precious to her

Speaking of, Monaca prob has a few gifts from the Warriors, and possibly even her other classmates, that she keeps. She says it's just for future blackmail but her heart says otherwise

Masaru is actually a pretty decent cook! He had grown tired of fast food so much he actually learnt how to make some basic meals. He sometimes even cooks for the others—mostly to impress them but still! Though he much prefers eating then preparing the meals

Jataro is awful at cooking tho—in fact, he's banned from the kitchen. He tends to get distracted and ends up putting random things into the mix

I have a feeling that all the Warriors have a 'liking' to Monaca, by different degrees however: Nagisa's is of course pupply love; Masaru thinks that they belong together since he's the Hero and she's the Princess; Kotoko probably sees her as a pure untainted angel that needs to be protected; and Jataro... well, maybe he's just confused lol

*You just finished digging the emergancy exits leading from Lost Haven and the Mutant Village to the emergancy shelter cave. It was a team effort and it took a while, but you were able to finish your work in a day’s time.*

Leo: “Phew. Man, that took a while. Hey Donny. How’s the tunnel leading to Lost Haven and the Mutant Village?”

Donny: “Well made and wide enough to fit even the biggest of mutants and people.”

I feel so bad for Michi. Not only does he lose another brother, but he has to be told about why Mondo was executed and the lie he told the gang. Would he ever forgive him?

Takemichi is smart, and more than that he knows the brothers. I've no doubt that he never took the accident at face value, never quite believed the narrative that Daiya got greedy and stupid and lost his life over it, but I don't think the would have realised the extent of Mondo's secrecy. Discovering the truth, and what Mondo was willing to do to run from it would be a cold, devastating shock to the system. But worse than that, Takemichi knows that had Mondo ever revealed the lie to him or the gang before the tragedy, He might not have been able to forgive him. Might not have been able to be there for Mondo the way he needed him, and Takemichi hates himself for it. Because now, he'd do anything, forgive anything if it meant he could have Mondo and the Diamonds back.

[from one of my angst comics] When Takaaki and Takemichi first cross paths in the demon hunting game, Takaaki was less than lucid - injured, paranoid, angry and a hair's breadth from giving into despair, latching onto Takemichi as a facsimile of his son was something of a defense mechanism. He moved beyond that quite quickly, bolstered by just how different Michi was compared to Taka, but still would suffer lapses of judgment after the more gruelling days. Once the game is over, and Takaaki has regained what little stability he could, he no longer gets the boys confused, but it takes longer for him to realise quite how much of his behaviour Michi had internalised.

@mypeacockfeathers (!!Takaaki connoisseur is HIGH PRAISE!! :D) Taichi surviving the game would definitely throw Takaaki for a loop. He knows the too kind, too trusting, too soft Taichi might be better off if he passed away, his injuries life altering and the world a nightmare; but Takaaki desperately wants him to live. He'd hate to admit it but he wants Taichi to survive for the small comfort to know there's someone, just one who might share Takaaki's pain, the loss of their child. Almost as a penance for the self-centred desire to be understood Takaaki takes it upon himself to tell Taichi of Chihiro's fate once he has healed enough to bear it, and he keeps a vigil so that he does not have to wake up alone.

Takaaki would hold no grudge against Fujiko, but he would also make no effort to reach out preferring to keep to himself and the very few that he instils any trust into (really only Takemichi, Taichi and Hiro. Hiroko is another matter since she has trouble forgiving any loss of life, and struggles to come to terms with the deaths that occured at Takaaki's hands whilst surviving the game) Fujiko in turn would find Takaaki absolutely terrifying and would avoid him at all costs. Haiji as a counterpart to Takaaki works far better than I'd like: Takaaki: a good man who has had to do bad things, and Haiji: a bad man who just so happens to have done good things (of course Dangan, you coulda done ANYTHING ELSE to have made it clear Haiji was a wrong'un but you had to go and make him a NONCE)

As such, unfortunately, when it comes to imprisonment with no evidence of the crime, it comes down to their own consciences to condemn them. Although Takaaki would stand by his actions and, if he had to do everything over again might even have repeated them; he would not refute his crimes. Even though he believes them absolutely necessary, if demanded of him, he would serve his punishment since he would be weighed down in a way that Haiji never would be.

In a world of despair, it's not those who actually deserve to be punished that get their just rewards (and lord knows Haiji bloody deserves it)

You're absolutely right; Takaaki's life has been a constant battle against a rising tide and when that dam bursts, the one thing that's been holding him together- anything getting in the way of the torrent that's unleashed, would be cataclysmic. It's just as well none of the Warriors of Hope actually had the misfortune to find him.

Apparently, although he would deny it, Kokichi had done some shopping for things that would make Miu happy. Angie lifted up a heating pad, which was chargeable and fully charged, and laid it across Miu's stomach, turning on the heat. Then she handed Miu a bottle of Panta from the cooler and some painkillers.

Kokichi crawled out of the bed, now towering over Haiji with the knife. Haiji was scrambling to get away, but of course, failing. He could only use one leg, after all.

"Wh-What did you say, you little brat?!"

"You heard me. Apologize."

There lay Miu, on her bed in a light grey nightgown. The clothing item hat been cut and torn in different places, and she seemed to have bruises, bite marks, and hand prints left all over herself The strawberry blonde trembled out in fear, tears in her eyes. Her dog had been forced into her kennel before everything happened, and as much as she needed her dog's help, she couldn't get to her. The sound of the shower running could be heard, along with whistling, most likely from her tormentor. The inventor silently cried, too terrified to make any loud noises, not moving much from how much she was hurting. Her sheets had blood on them, as well as the torn nightgown she wore. She seemed to tense up, hearing a door start to open. At first, she thought it was the bathroom door, and whimpered, though once she realized it was her bedroom door, she pulled herself up to sit up, arms shaky as she held herself up "H-help!" she called through a shaky voice, trying not to be too terribly loud still
