I think there's actually something really profound in Donna's 'missing everything' gag. Like, yes, it's objectively funny that this woman has somehow missed every alien invasion in the entirety of her time on Earth.

But there's more to it than that. She's the most compassionate companion, the most down to Earth as the saying goes. She sees things that others don't. Like the missing sick records, the way others are treated, Martha's ring. Sees the inside of the Tardis before she sees the outside. And perhaps most importantly, she doesn't see The Time Lord - that big otherworldly figure. She just sees the Doctor. Sees his need for true companionship, his need for guidance, his need for someone to carry a burden he is being crushed under.

She misses the big things, yes, but in exchange she is so wholly, beautifully immersed in the small things no one else sees.

Idolising Smith-as-the-Doctor turned out to be very useful for playing Aemond, who idolises Smith-as-Daemon.

It is, admittedly, a complicated relationship: Aemond imitates, reveres and despises his uncle.

He found it so interesting, in fact, that he spoke to showrunner Condal and proposed avoiding Smith on set so that the they would only ever interact in character. Smith was up for it.

There is a resemblance between the actors, something noted by his grandmother then and by me now.

the line “the doctor is male and female and neither and more” is exactly the type of line ive been waiting for from the show for YEARS . a canon reference to the doctor’s non-binary identity and it’s done in the most nebulous-fuck-labels gendequeer way possible . fuck yes . im so damn happy

no but like normally the doctor disappearing would've been when the intro played like ruby would've looked around frantically and said doctor?? doctor!!!! and then bam. intro. but instead we didn't get one at all... no doctor no intro.... like he's connected to the show itself......
