Nichelle Nichols Vs. Eartha Kitt
Final
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Eartha Kitt - (Batman) - No text propaganda
Nichelle Nichols - (Star Trek) - She speaks for herself. Legendary, iconic, at the forefront of feminism and civil rights in the 60s, she is a triple threat who did so much more. She volunteered from 1977 to promote recruitment diversity within NASA, including some of the first female and ethnic minority astronauts. Martin Luther King Jr. compared her work on Star Trek as a 'vital role model' to the civil rights marches. She refused to be dismissed, fought for visibility and shone whilst doing so. As a woman in stem, and simply a woman she means the world and stars above to me.
Master Poll List of the Hot Vintage TV Ladies Bracket
Additional propaganda below the cut
Nichelle Nichols:
She is the original badass babe. She was a black woman in a leading role on TV in the 60s, a trailblazer for black actresses for years to come. She is so beautiful and so awesome.
Tumblr media
she's fantastic. have you seen her? paved the way for black actresses on TV even while her lines and scenes were being cut and improvised the most iconic uhura line in the series. (sulu: "I'll save you, fair maiden!" uhura, pushing him away: "sorry, neither!") she's incredibly talented and it's a crime the show didn't give her more screen time (or make her sing more often because she also has a beautiful voice!)
Tumblr media
“Sorry, neither” in response to “fair maiden” was ad libbed by her. There’s a lot more I could say but what else do you need??
Tumblr media
A sci-fi icon!
Tumblr media
She was such a trailblazer, and Uhura was such an important character for so many people to be able to see on TV. Apparently Mae Jemison (the first African American woman to go into space) cited her as a reason she wanted to become an astronaut. She was just an absolute legend!
Tumblr media
The story of Martin Luther King telling her not to quit Star Trek gives me chills. Representation matters. “Thank you so much, Dr. King. I’m really going to miss my co-stars.” Dr. King's smile, Nichols recalled, vanished from his face. "He said, 'What are you talking about?'" the actress explained. "I told him. He said, 'You cannot,' and so help me, this man practically repeated verbatim what Gene said. He said, 'Don’t you see what this man is doing, who has written this? This is the future. He has established us as we should be seen. 300 years from now, we are here. We are marching. And this is the first step. When we see you, we see ourselves, and we see ourselves as intelligent and beautiful and proud.' He goes on and I’m looking at him and my knees are buckling. I said, 'I…, I…' And he said, 'You turn on your television and the news comes on and you see us marching and peaceful, you see the peaceful civil disobedience, and you see the dogs and see the fire hoses, and we all know they cannot destroy us because we are there in the 23rd Century.'"
Tumblr media
She shared the first interracial kiss on Star Trek, helped propel real life African American women into space-related careers, and looks divine in a mini skirt.

HOW DID UHURA WALK BACKWARDS SO FAR??? WOW!

A young Christopher Lee guest stars as dastardly Larry Spence - a rising star in the world of journalism, turned blackmailer and then murderer - in The Vise: The Final Column (1.16, ABC, 1955); the episode wasn't seen in the UK until 1963, as part of ITV drama anthology Tension
#fave spotting#christopher lee#the vise#tension#1955#the final column#for more information on the complicated origins of The Vise (a US production entirely made in the UK) see my prev fave spotting post for#Jacqueline Hill's appearance on the series#Lee was hardly a newcomer when he made this ep; he'd been acting professionally since being demobbed a couple of years after ww2 and#was something of a stock player in british cinemas‚ usually in minor bit parts as caddish gentlemen or authority figures and military men#one of his first really significant roles would be later in '55 as a submarine commander in The Cockleshell Heroes#he was also making semi regular appearances on tv in small guest spots‚ albeit sometimes uncredited (as in ITV's The Adventures of the#Scarlet Pimpernel also around this time). a jobbing actor‚ basically‚ and not yet the cinematic icon he would begin (that journey starting#at the end of the decade and the beginning of his association with Hammer studios and horror immortality). he's very good here tho#host and narrator Ron Randell even describes him near the start of the ep as (something like) 'young‚ handsome‚ but sinister' which#may as well have been printed on business cards for the kind of work Lee would find himself doing for the next decade or so#yes he's a real rotter‚ a strangler of ladies and a blackmailer of tycoons‚ and in true Vise fashion he gets his just desserts and the mora#status quo is maintained (this is a very moral series and takes pains to inform us via Randell exactly what kind of punishment the villains#received after the events depicted)#Lee made two more Vise episodes but as Network (rip beloved) seemingly took a random approach to which episodes to include in their#first volume of the series (and obviously as it turned out only volume) i have no idea if either of those are on the set#one can hope! and i do bc it's lovely seeing him so young but with such a meaty role

MIDNIGHT REVIEWS Shōgun Episode Ten
Well. Here we are. No more Shōgun Day. But it all led to a terrific series finale that ends so unexpectedly.
It was impossible to talk about it without spoilers, but here is my review of Episode 10.
Check out my other reviews and such things, if you like.

My media this week (19-25 March 2023)
Tumblr media
ʸᵒᵘʳ ʰᵒⁿᵒᵘʳ ᶦ ˡᵒᵛᵉ ᵗʰᵉᵐ
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 The Burning Issue of the Day (Lady Hardcastle Mysteries #5) (T.E. Kinsey, author) - Emily & Flo help out some suffragettes
😒How To Marry A Marble Marquis: A Regency Monster Romance (C.M. Nascosta, author) - boring & disappointing - I basically read this overnight from 1-3 am during an insomnia episode or I probably wouldn't have bothered to finish
🥰👂‍The Forgotten Dead (OutFoxing the Paranormal #1) (Jordan L Hawk, author; Tristan James, narrator) - very satisfyingly spooky ghost story/paranormal investigator + romance! I have the 2nd book but I'm trying to make myself wait for the audio bc I really dug this narrator
😍over the hills and far away (througheden, author; , narrator) - 84K, steddie - just a fucking great 2nd chance fic
😊 The Wolf and the Wallflower (Wolves of the Ton #1) (Devin Harnois, author) - cute enough fantasy/fairy tale regency werewolf queer romance - I did enjoy seeing their OTT HEA! (and compared to the gargoyle romance it was a fucking masterpiece)
And then I started my biannual (at least) reread of The Muderbot Diaries, inspired by my oldest bff finally reading the series!
😍👂‍All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries #1) (Martha Wells, author; Kevin R Free, narrator)
😍👂‍Artificial Condition (The Murderbot Diaries #2) (Martha Wells, author; Kevin R Free, narrator)
😍👂‍Rogue Protocol (The Murderbot Diaries #3) (Martha Wells, author; Kevin R Free, narrator)
💖💖 +245K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
[Podfic] So Loud & So Clear (quietnight (reader); StilesBastille24 (author)) - MCU: stucky, 26K - relisten; good WS recovery fic
I'd Burn the Castle for You [Podfic] (singinginmay (reader); AidaRonan (author)) - Stranger Things: steddie, 3.6K - relisten; absolute forever fave
On the Count of Three series (lightgetsin) - Dresden Files: dresden/marcone/kinkaid, 31K - good & very hot series that starts with the threesome but really kinkaid is just there to buffer marcone and dresden as they work out their issues
Peek-A-Boo (rainbow_nerds) - Stranger Things: steddie, 1.7K - short but super hot and excellent accidental exhibitionism fic

Congratulations to Eartha Kitt! Winner of the Hot Vintage TV Women's Tournament!
Tumblr media
It was a narrow victory only winning over Nichelle Nichols by less than 1%. What a nail bitter of a final! Thank you so much to everyone who participated in any way! Please feel free to keep sending in stuff about the hot vintage TV ladies you love while we take the next three weeks for submissions for the men's bracket! We'll be around with information on submitting stars for the men's tournament, sharing our thoughts from throughout this past tournament, and continuing to share hot vintage TV ladies in the interim.
- Sincerely, Mods Vintage and Violet

Pathfinders in Space (ABC, 1960)
"Now, the remainder of us have fifteen hours of oxygen left. That leaves fifteen hours in which to complete our research here."
"Well, what's the good of all that if you can't come back with it?"
"The moon never destroys her treasures, Henderson. We shall leave a record and it'll be preserved in the vacuum of the caves. And the future expeditions you mentioned, they will find it."
#pathfinders in space#1960#children's television#classic tv#abc#malcolm hulke#eric paice#guy verney#peter williams#gerald flood#harold goldblatt#richard dean#gillian ferguson#stewart guidotti#pamela barney#irene sutcliffe#hugh evans#astor sklair#michael guest#the first sequel to the seminal (and sadly entirely lost) serial Target Luna; for reasons best known to the production team‚ despite being#a direct sequel with the same characters‚ every major role was recast for Pathfinders (and so sadly we don't get to see a young Michael#Craze). often described as a precursor to DW‚ and honestly that's hard to deny: this might be the first uk kids sci fi serial to really#nail that family friendly vibe‚ with enough interest for both children and adult viewers alike. it's a rare gift that it exists complete#and finally getting to it i found it a genuinely compelling series. it can be a little cheesy and a little silly in places (adorably‚ our#astronauts take a full tea service to the moon and regularly stop for tea) but i actually ended up learning some stuff about the moon from#this 64 yr old series. Gerald Flood's everyman journalist is a nicely constructed audience avatar but it's missing cheese expert Peter#Williams who gives the orders (and regularly imperils his own children). a lot of fun! well worth seeking out for old tv fans#also needless to say the various miniatures and fx work is frankly adorable.#and shoutout to Prof Mary Meadows‚ it's nice to have a kickass lady scientist in a show this old (and who remains cooler and more capable#than her male counterparts on more than one occasion).

Rosalind Bennett, Hugh Fraser, and David Suchet in Agatha Christie's Poirot (1989) The Adventure of the Western Star
S2E9
Poirot is thrilled to receive an invitation from renowned Belgian actress Marie Marvelle. She has been receiving anonymous notes about the Western Star, a valuable diamond purchased by her husband at a cut-rate price several years before. The notes speak to the mystical nature of the diamonds and that they should be returned to their rightful owners. The next day, Lady Yardly claims to have received similar notes about her own fabulous diamond, the Eastern Star. When Poirot and Hastings visit Lord and Lady Yardly the diamond is stolen in a daring robbery. Needless to say, none of this sits well with Poirot who finds he has a very tight knot to untie.
*Poirot is seen placing a card with the words "Mlle. Marie Marvelle." on top of the flowers he has brought with him to the apartment before putting final touches to the tea table. When he gazes at the bouquet before he picks it up later on, the card is nowhere to be seen.
