Steve's Thanksgiving
I have had this idea since September and haven't had the time to write the whole fic but I wanted to put something out for today.
Thanks to @silkspiderstuff, @rae-gar-targaryen, and @mrshipsmcgee for letting me bounce ideas off them. This isn't edited so please be gentle with me. I should be cooking right now.
Steve decides he wants to host thanksgiving for the party a year or two after  the Vecna situation. It was resolved, everyone  lived,  don’t worry about details
Steve spend the early part of November in the Wheeler’s basement looking at Karen’s collection of recipe magazines and borrows her copy of Joy of Cooking
He wants to do this all by himself for everyone he loves.
Literally everyone says no to him doing it alone
Eddie and Robin spend the night before at Steve’s tearing up sage leaving and trying to help Steve defrost the bird and stay calm
Morning of, Steve wakes up to pounding on his door at 6:30 am, please picture him answering the door with his hair going every which way and wearing glasses
Hopper and Murray have shown up with cinnamon rolls made by Will and Joyce, all of the things needed to deep fry the bird, and enough beer to drown the town
Nancy and Jonathan show up next with the cornbread stuffing with all sorts of delicious things like onions and mushrooms and celery and craisins. There is plenty of it to go inside the bird as well as bake on its own
Please insert a scene of Nancy, Hopper, and Murray screaming about how to stuff/cook the bird while Jonathan, Robin, Eddie, and Steve look too tired to participate while they while quietly drink their coffee and eat the cinnamon rolls
Joyce brings her famous green bean casserole
El and Robin make the mashed sweet potatoes with marshmallows
Murray does a thing with brussels sprouts and balsamic glaze that would, low-key be the best dish on the table but this will hardly get eaten because brussels sprouts
Eddie has a recipe for mashed potatoes that he ripped from a magazine he saw at the store. These are some of the most garlicky, creamy, buttery mashed potatoes you have ever seen. They are truly terrible for your heart but too delicious for anyone to care.
Wayne makes the gravy on the stove top without saying a word but he’s smiling quietly, enjoying the large boisterous family his nephew has brought him into.
Lucas and Erica’s mom has sent them with the most incredible breaded mac and cheese
Erica has brought her own spicey sweet potato dish because she didn’t want any of that marshmallow nonsense
Claudia and Dustin bring three pies, one of them is chocolate
Max insists and making Pillsbury crescent rolls
Steve has a bit of freak out realizing he forgot about the cranberry sauce.
Nancy tries to placate him by telling him she picked up some that canned nonsense but not to worry about because no one likes cranberry sauce anyway
Steve is not having it. He will not settle for this. Things have gotten away from him. He let everyone else take control but damnit, he will not settle for this. His family deserves better than this. They deserve more than he got. He needs this dinner to be perfect and he needs for there to be real cranberry sauce.
Eddie holds Steve by the shoulders and says, you want real cranberry sauce, we will make real cranberry sauce
Joyce and Eddie help Steve make a lovely cranberry sauce with bits of granny smith apples and dried apricots and chopped pecans. It’s a smashing success and everyone loves it
Mike and Will are bashfully flirting while everyone is “distracted” (no one is that distracted. Everyone knows and they think it’s adorable)
Hopper makes Steve carve the turkey (with a little direction to assist him).
Everything is delicious and dinner itself is amazing.
A football starts in the back yard after dinner and Eddie joins under great pleading from Steve. Eddie didn’t need the pleading but he likes how cute Steve looks when he does it. One tackle results in a very cute Steddie make-out. Hopper teases them but he laughs
Mike and Will do the dishes together
Robin ducks out to meet up with Vicky after giving Steve and giant hug and congratulating him on a job well done.
Max and Lucas fall asleep cuddled up the couch
El and Erica are lying on the floor, trying to fight their food coma while White Christmas plays on the TV.
Claudia specifically fawns over Eddie and asks for his mashed potato recipe
She gets a little tipsy and gently hits on Wayne who is surprisingly smooth but a complete gentleman about it
Joyce pulls Steve aside to tell him how well it went and how glad she is that he wanted to do this.
At the end of day, Steve and Eddie are in bed together and Steve mentions how surprised everyone came together like that.
Eddie reminds Steve that of course his family would for him.

Gobble Gobble
Are you ready for Thanksgiving? Does your house smell fabulous or are you packing your stretchy pants to go to dinner elsewhere?  Are you skipping the whole mess and just enjoying an extra day off?  Whatever you may be doing on this third week of November, I hope it’s good for your soul.  Whether it’s a crowd around the table or a solitary walk through the autumn woods, take a moment to soak it up and be grateful. If you’re struggling on this holiday, maybe just be thankful that this too shall pass.   “The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving.”   -   H. U. Westermayer I’ve had a bit of a topsy-turvey year and I’m feeling deeply grateful for my family.  My hiccups have been minor compared to what so many others face but, holy cow, has my family shown me love and support.  I’m so humbled by the dear people in my life, my friends and family are absolutely beyond compare.  I have no idea how or why I’m so fortunate, so all I can offer is gratitude.  Mine is bottomless. I’m one lucky duck.
Today I’m preparing sort of a mini-feast.  The Edgewater gang traveled down to Tennessee to spend Thanksgiving with Jamie’s family ( they’ll be here for Christmas!).  Matt flew in from Minneapolis on Saturday and he’s been working a lot from here, Zoom meetings and tapping away day and night. He needs a break.  So since it’s just the three of us, I’m making Ina Garten’s herb-roasted turkey breast rather than a big ol’ bird. It’s a wonderful recipe, tried and true. I’ve also made a couple of family favorites, sweet potato casserole with that yummy pecan and brown sugar topping,  cheesy hash brown casserole, ranch crescent rolls, dressing, and a little apple pie (not gonna lie, the pie is from a bakery). That’s about half of what I’d usually make and it still seems excessive. Tomorrow should be easy though - the turkey breast won’t take long and with just a couple of dishes to pop in the oven it’ll be a breeze.   I’m really going to miss the bacon-wrapped green bean bundles, those are my favorite.  Also the cranberry-orange-walnut relish stuff - I’m not sure it has a name, but I love it.  I couldn’t care less about the casseroles.  Thankfully I still don’t have much of an appetite, so I’ll probably nibble on the turkey and crunch on some celery sticks.   For tonight’s dinner I’ve got teriyaki chicken in the crock pot.  It’s a super simple recipe, I don’t think it’s actually teriyaki - just an easy substitute.  Basically chop up some chicken breasts, throw them in the crock pot with honey, soy sauce, and garlic and wait four hours.  When there’s about 30 minutes left I’ll put some jasmine rice in the rice cooker and let it do its thing.  Add some broccoli and you’re done! Easy peasey.   Since I seem to be rambling about food, here’s some breaking news - we got a new front door!  The original door was kind of pretty, but seemed awfully flimsy.  We never liked it.  We’d shopped around a bit and picked one that we liked, and yesterday was our installation date.  I love it!
Tumblr media
I really love that it’s got a keypad entry like our door in Tennessee.  One more thing checked off the long list of improvements we’re making to this place.  That staircase to the right is on the list too.  I’d love to tear up the old (awful) carpet and paint the stairs before installing a runner.  I’d love to sand and stain that wood to more closely match the floors.   Still, it’s a pretty door and I’m loving it.  It’s white right now, but I’ll paint the exterior side.  The color I’ve chosen is City Rain.  It’ll match the shutters.
Tumblr media
I thought long and hard about picking a pale pink shade, but I went with a color that will look good in every season.  That shade of gray will look just as good with autumn’s orange and gold as it will with bright red at Christmas or pink blooms in the summer.   Gotta’ go with what works. Speaking of Christmas, I picked up the cutest bit of wall art this week.  How jolly is this guy?
Tumblr media
He was on clearance at Kirkland’s and I had a coupon for an extra 20% off.  He came home with me for about $28. When the tree goes up and we deck the halls, he’ll hang above that entry table by the door.   Yep, I’m gettin’ my jingle on and Santa is my homeboy.  We go way back (North Pole High School, Class of ‘81!).
Tumblr media
That small, blurry person in the candy cane striped scarf is moi - cheering my heart out for North Pole High School in North Pole, Alaska.  I had to dig to find a color photo (how sad is that?).  The lovely girl beside me is Tracey, still every bit as cute and now a long-distance Facebook friend. I couldn’t find a photo that clearly displayed the big “NP” on our sweaters, One year we just had “Patriots”  (our high school was built in 1976).
Tumblr media
I’m sharing these semi-embarrassing photos to prove that my Christmas spirit runs deep.  We used to answer letters to Santa as part of our English grade.  Letters from all over the world made their way to Santa’s house in North Pole - yes, it’s really there.  I went to school with Santa’s daughter and her name was (no kidding) Merry Christmas Miller.  She eventually married and became Merry Key, I think.  Not quite the same impact.  Anyway, we’d answer letters for a grade.  There was a format that we had to follow, couldn’t make promises and that sort of thing.  But it sure kept the magic alive for a bunch of teenagers.  All of these decades later (oh my gosh, 41 years??) I get the same sense of excitement when I start seeing twinkling lights on houses and Christmas tree lots.  I am so ready for holiday music, cookies, and FUN!  I’ve got all of the grandgirl’s gifts and I can’t wait for her to open them!  Once an elf from North Pole, always an elf from North Pole. This post has ping-ponged from Thanksgiving food to a new door to high school memories and Christmas.  Perfectly normal, right?  I should probably quit while I’m ahead.  It’s nearly time to dish up that crock pot chicken anyway.  I’ll sign off with a big holiday hug, and send out my sincere wish that your hearts are light and your minds are at peace.  I’m grateful for so much this year, and some of the lovely people I’ve met through this blog are on that list.  Thanks for stopping by. Stay safe, stay well, stay thankful.

Doing a scaled-down and slightly belated Thanksgiving dinner today with @simaethae and her parents, since it’s not a holiday here in the UK.
Menu for this evening is:
Mulled apple cider
Fresh crescent rolls
Roast chicken stuffed with orange and thyme (I’m not a big turkey fan, I care more about the sides)
Green bean casserole made with fresh green beans and homemade cream of mushroom soup
Sweet potato souffle - I don’t sweeten the potatoes, just add milk, butter, and salt and stir in some dried currants, but I do top it with marshmallows and finish it under the broiler to get a nice crunchy caramelized crust
My always-popular fresh pear cake

This thanksgiving marks 5 years with my boyfriend. I wanted this dinner to be extra special so I decided to brine the turkey (which, side note, was given to us FOR FREE from a neighbor who’s name I don’t even know!) in the “Father of the Brine” which is a recipe from one of our favorite shows, Bob’s Burgers! Included in this year’s spread was homemade mashed potatoes, homemade squash, homemade sweet potato casserole, homemade slow cooker brown sugar carrots, homemade gravy, green bean casserole, out of the box stuffing, & crescent rolls. Everything was delicious & I’m truly proud of myself for doing it all alone. I attempted my mom’s homemade apple pie & also tried pumpkin pie. Both sadly turned out completely awful. Now for that I am so disappointed. I’m going to have to retry my mom’s apple pie to redeem myself. Other than my terrible pies turned out to be a pretty great anniversary/thanksgiving dinner.

Staples in American Cooking
I consider myself something of an amateur cultural anthropologist in that I don’t have a formal degree, but I absolutely love learning about and studying other cultures. I have the utmost respect for these cultures, and one of my favorite ways to learn about them is through their food. Food seems to transcend all barriers (language, religious differences, political differences, regional boundaries, ect.) and it brings people together. It’s a way to celebrate different things. Food makes people happy. For dinner this afternoon I had haluski noodles (a traditional Czech recipe that I will share at the end of this post) for the first time. They were absolutely delicious! It was like taking a bite out of another country, so I decided to share a list of American cooking staples for anyone who is from somewhere else and might be interested to learn about our cooking the way I love learning about yours.
Please note that, just like anywhere else, staple ingredients vary from region to region, but overall, these are the most popular. Also, this is not meant to be a comprehensive list; I’m sure there are things I’ve forgotten, so please reblog with your additions.
-Chicken (we eat all parts of the chicken, but breasts and wings seem to be the most popular)
-Beef (most popularly ground beef)
-Pork (most popularly in the form of bacon and ham)
-Turkey (not as popular as the others, but we do eat a good bit of it)
-Shrimp
-Butter
-Noodles
-Cream of chicken soup
-Cream of mushroom soup
-Cream of celery soup
-Cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, and parmesan are most popular)
-Cream cheese
-Velveeta (a pasteurized processed cheese that melts super smoothly and is popular in dips and casseroles)
-Chicken eggs
-Cow’s milk
-Heavy cream
-Sour cream
-Canned tomatoes in all forms (diced, fire roasted, crushed, tomato sauce)
-Rotel (canned diced tomatoes and chopped green chilies)
-Canned mushrooms
-White rice
-Worcestershire sauce
-Soy sauce
-Ketchup
-Ranch dressing (we will dip almost anything in ketchup or ranch dressing)
-Pre-packaged flour tortilla shells (we will roll up almost anything in a tortilla shell)
-Potatoes (one of the most versatile vegetables out there)
-Garlic
-Chicken and beef broths
-Strawberries
-Blueberries
-Peaches
-Flour
-Sugar
-Brown sugar
-Corn
-Carrots
-Bell peppers
-Cabbage
-Sausage (pork, beef, smoked, Polish, Italian, breakfast)
-Sweet potatoes
-Marshmallows
-Onions
-Jarred salsa
-Jarred spaghetti sauce
-Boxed macaroni and cheese
-Asparagus
-Celery
-Beans
-Salmon
-Tuna
-Grains like quinoa and couscous have become increasingly popular
-Taco seasoning
-Apples
-Cinnamon
-Pumpkin spice
-Olive oil
-Vegetable oil
-Sweetened condensed milk
-Ritz crackers (they make a buttery, crunchy topping for casseroles)
As I said earlier, staple ingredients vary from region to region. I am from the American South, so I would also like to share with you some popular dishes from my region. I don’t personally like all of these dishes, but nonetheless, they are wildly popular in my neck of the woods.
-Fried chicken
-Cornbread
-Collard greens
-Turnip greens
-Mustard greens
-Black-eyed peas
-Peach cobbler
-Blueberry cobbler
-Apple pie cooked in a cast iron skillet
-Venison (deer meat)
-Stuffed bell peppers
-Beef stew
-Pimento cheese
-Steamed crawfish
-Shrimp creole
-Fried turkey
-Fried catfish
-Coleslaw
-Potato salad
-Homemade baked beans cooked in a Dutch oven
-Fried pork skins
-All kinds of BBQ
-Tomato gravy over homemade biscuits
-Sausgae gravy over homemade biscuits
-Tomato sandwiches
-Fried squash
-Fried okra
-From-scratch spaghetti
-Fried chicken gizzards
-Meatloaf
-All kinds of casseroles
-Salmon patties
-Bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers
-Deviled eggs
-Pigs-in-a-blanket (little smokies wrapped and baked in crescent roll dough)
-Butter beans (Lima beans cooked with meaty ham bones)
Now as promised, here’s that recipe for haluski noodles. I added more bacon than it calls for because four slices of bacon is practically a single serving, and after it came out of the oven, I added a tiny splash of Worcestershire and soy sauces to make it a little more moist and flavorful.

A New Series
By ritacaroline
Quips n Blips to Ponder
Episode 5
What will we be doing for the holidays ??
Thanksgiving has just passed. So how did we do ?
What food items were available at your Thanksgiving table ?
1. Turkey
2. Glazed Ham
3. Stuffing (please indicate what type)
a. Bread cube - (preferably from our friends at Pepperidge Farm. )
b. Corn bread stuffing
c. Sausage and bread stuffing.
d. Oyster Stuffing ( for the aphrodisiac lovers. )
e. None - instead, we like crescent rolls. ( that ones mine - no you ate 3 already. Mom ? Do you see him ?) Poppin fresh open a new tube Please.
4. Cranberry sauce
a. Fresh made from real cooked cranberries. ( wow, is your mom Martha Stewart ? Or Betty Crocker ? Circle just one )
b. Canned. Fresh outa the Oceanspray can. ( when it lands with a plop onto a plate - you see impressions of the can ridges all over the glob. ) The shiny glistening glob. That's the true sign of a fresh can of gelled sugar. Bon appetite.
5. Green bean casserole mush w mushroom soup glop. OMG. Gag me w a spoon. Pardon me please while I hurl.
6. Lasagna ? Yep. Some people do this. Not a bad idea.
7. Creamed onion pearls. Hmm. I don't think so. But ok.
8. Mashed sweet potatoes w marshmallows ? Diabetic kamikaze ? ( 10 points off for poor spelling )
9. Gravy. Yes. To be created by only experienced cooks please. This task is not for you if you're wishy washy about cooking. In that case you have little chance of success. And you will be off to Thanksgiving jail. Yes - it exists. Yes - it's awful. Imagine hordes of people wandering about aimlessly in the style of night of the living dead. Holding metal stirring whisks in the air while looking zombie ish in a tie back apron and chefs hat.
(So - get out the hand held submersion blender or die. ) If you don't know what that item is - give up now.
Or just buy a few cans of gravy. Voila. Magic.
10 Pumpkin pie. No comment.
How did you feel after eating said meal ??
1. Ok. Not bad.
2. Little tummy trouble. But I'll live.
3. Problems best portrayed by video of Mt Vesuvius erupting. :
Tumblr media
4: I spent the day after thanksgiving praising the porcelain God. On my knees.
10. And how do you plan on celebrating Thanksgiving next year ?
a. Run for my life
b. Eat at the diner.
c. Make pb&js. And call it a day.
d. Bribe Martha Stewart to
provide a home visit.
e. I will be on a food fast that day.
For religious reasons.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
Be sure to have the lemon lime flavored alka seltzer available in your cabinet. For the morning after you have over done it with the booze. That fizzy shit will be your best buddy.
Did you get all the toys you need ? If not - expect crying and tantrums. From you. For being negligent.
Did you put that crap together ? Assemble the toys that need that ?
Batteries ?
Yes
No.
I'm a dumbass. Expect crying and tantrums.
Do not walk about while barefoot. If you have purchased Legos. For the young ones. You will be damn sorry if you step on a few. It's very confusing why this form of weaponry has not been deployed in times of war. Way less costly than missiles and air to ground combat.
Do not steal this idea under severe penalty of the law ! Do you promise ?
During times of international conflict and war, simply hide the enemy's shoes. Secretly. Then shhh. Sprinkle lego pieces all over the grounds outside their tents and/ or quarters. Then watch them emerge and slowly but surely - they will be rendered unable to walk due to the steppage onto-age of afore mentioned Legos. That's a military term. Thus rendered unable to defend their territory in a painful surrender. And a sad day shall be bestoweth upon them. ( ? ) official quote from the victors, " It was the Legos amongst them that led us to Victory. "
Back to our normal programming :
What will we have for breakfast on Christmas ?
The family will be expecting a special breakfast. Have you thought about this ? No ? You must. Cereal or toast will not cut it.
How about an egg breakfast casserole ?
Cinnamon rolls ?
French toast. Without something like this - you're fucked. I mean it.
If worse comes to worst , swing by the Golden Arches for a few packs of the McSanta Delight. Mmmm. Yummy mush.
Now that the presents are opened and a lot of folks are seriously disappointed, ? Now wtf ? Instruct those spoiled brats to go play w the toys and stop fighting. And shut the hell up.
Grab you some eggnog. Spike that bad boy w some vodka or tanguray gin. Now that's a Merry Christmas. Do not over do. Or drive. Just hang out. And to all a good night. Ho ho ho.

In my family our basic spread is turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry jello salad, green bean casserole, and Pillsbury crescent rolls. For dessert we always have at least a pumpkin pie and a turtle pie.
And then depending on the year we'll add stuff like corn pudding, glazed carrots, broccoli & corn casserole, and roasted brussel sprouts along with apple pie, sugar cream pie, key lime pie, and sometimes cheesecake.

We're doing a Friendsgiving with two other couples at our new house, and our responsibilities are:
Whiskey barrel brined turkey from the local butcher
Mashed potatoes
Green bean casserole
Pillsbury crescent rolls (they're a family tradition)
Mexican hot chocolate (I found a slow cooker recipe I wanna try)
And the other two couples are bringing eggnog and stuffing!

What are the family’s favorite thanksgiving foods?
Alex likes the dark meat from the turkey, Kuzy likes the green bean casserole, Andre likes the mashed potatoes, V likes the creamed corn, and Tom usually eats about 24 crescent rolls by himself.
My favorite is the dessert Alex gives me when the kids go to bed.
Love,Nicky
