the worst thing v gets is being called a leech and attention seeker which is what tkkers had been calling jm FOR YEARS. while disliking v because of shippers is petty it’s incredibly interesting how many jikookers had been defending v in the last few weeks while it’s complete silence within tkkers, youll never catch any of them defend jm
That's because a lot of Jikookers don't need to falsify reality in order to represent a certain agenda. Jikookers can be the bigger person if they need to be.
As someone who is truthfully OT7, I don't sit here hoping that hate trains form around someone that I see to be a "threat" to my ship. If I'm being completely honest, I think trying to consume Are You Sure?! from purely a shipping point of view is entirely counterproductive and not a good way to enjoy content. I think it's fun to gush over certain moments, but if you're only parked outside Disney+ or whatever streaming you're allegedly pirating it from just to see your ship in action... you're opening yourself to form biases and bitter feelings toward things that might not be directly encompassed within your ship's boundaries.
This is why I made a call out post whenever certain jikookers resorted to bullying Taehyung whenever they saw that he was going to be a guest on the show. Though I already hear people coming, saying "Oh, but taekookers are bullying Jimin to hell and back, so why can't we?"
Well maybe you shouldn't because it shows that you have the representative IQ of a toad. So let me get this straight, people who are NOT Taehyung bully Jimin... your first course of action is to... bully Taehyung? I think reciprocal hate is incredibly stupid and unwarranted. If I'm going to shit on the behavior of taekookers, guess who I'm gonna take it out on? That's right, I'm going to take it out on taekookers -- not Kim Taehyung.
Taehyung is currently serving in the military, so I doubt he's logging onto Twitter or Tumblr or whatever to say nasty things about his BEST FRIEND. I think people tend to forget that Jimin and Taehyung are tied at the hip and have an entire song where they wax poetry about how much they care about one another...
Tumblr media
Anyways.
A lot of Taekookers live in another facet of reality, so in order to make half of their agenda true, Jungkook has to dislike Jimin, the company has to be forcing their fanservice, Jungkook's mother had to have been sent a script beforehand to ask about Jimin, Taehyung was lying about only seeing the trip details a few days before departure, Jungkook was holding Taehyung's waist in this screenshot (but don't look at the footage where it shows otherwise!), Jungkook only acts "cold" (if being humorously bratty is considered cold) toward him in certain scenes because the producers want Jikook to appear more real, HYBE has some joint contract with the South Korean military to put Jimin and Jungkook together in order to hide the real gay couple that is Taekook--
The more you dive into their rhetoric, the less it makes sense. Taekookers also argue with LITERAL KOREAN PEOPLE about translations in the show. Also it's super funny to see them shift from the narrative that she show is scripted to suddenly saying -- no, it's not scripted, to then saying this part is scripted, to then saying, no the whole thing is scripted again, to then saying, actually at this time stamp they went off the script and--
Fucking crazy.
I think what I noticed the most about a lot of taekooker's rhetoric is that in order for something to be true, they need to create a lie or insult the intelligence of both Taehyung and Jungkook.
So you're telling me that two grown men have to lie about who they're with and what they're doing in order to make your ship real? You're telling me that Jungkook and Taehyung are not intelligent enough to negotiate their contracts or what type of "fanservice" they have to engage with on the regular? You're telling me that Jungkook lied about who he saw on his birthday in order to protect Taehyung? You're telling me that after ten years of being in the same group, Jungkook is actually uncomfortable with Jimin but still decided to get a matching tattoo with him and all the other members? You're telling me that the homophobic country of South Korea is willing to hide a gay couple by endorsing a manufactured gay couple? In the military? Where gay people are famously treated well?
That's sarcasm, for anyone who might lack reading comprehension.
Taekookers are the literal embodiment of that one post where the person is like "source(s): trust me bro" because half of what they spit out makes no fucking sense and is actually insulting to Taehyung and Jungkook. Like y'all constantly insult their intelligence and their free will and make it seem like they're trapped behind bars and don't have enough money or power to negotiate what THEY want. I've even seen certain taekookers become Jungkook antis after Are You Sure?! came out because they think he's being mean to or bullying Taehyung.
God, the lights are on but nobody is home.

Tumblr media
in a way you’ve always loved him. he knows. you don’t even have to say it out loud for him to be happy.
but sometimes it feels like you take him for granted. sometimes you make him really, really angry and that, he can’t let pass. and it's not for his sake but for yours. always everything for you. he has to make you understand that there are things you can’t do if you want to stay safe from the outside world. safe from him, sometimes.
running away is one of those ugly, wretched things you know well he hates, and he slams you against the wall and drags you back through the front door into the house by your hair, he bashes your head on the kitchen counter, near the fire of the stove he’s been preparing lunch with to make you understand a concept you're apparently too dumb to grasp.
“what the fuck did i tell you about running, uh?” seething with undiluted rage .
“i just wanted to go outside, tae. i swear!”
“i said what the fuck did i tell you about running!? do you understand how much it would hurt me to see you go?!” his voice booms inside the walls of your head, an endless echo that makes bitter tears gather at the back of your eyes and spill over.
your face is burning. tongues of fire lick at your cheeks, a scorching caress that reminds you of taehyung's. his palm always leaves a brand behind, reminding him and yourself that he’s there.
your hands scramble for his in a miserable attempt to lessen his hold. “i’m sorry, tae! so sorry, please! please!”
his closed fist in your hair pushes your head closer to the heat. “i’ll fucking kill you if i have to, you know that right–” it’s not a question, merely a promise, but you nod anyway, frantically, desperately– “they’ll never stop finding your body, baby. do you understand?” he screams and shakes you with his hands tight in your hair when you only cry in response.
“i said,” leaning in, mouth brushing over your ear. chills go down your back as his voice turns sickeningly mellow as if he’s whispering sweet nothings instead of threats, “do you understand?”
“yes! yes! god, yes i understand! tae, i’m so sorry! it’s all my fault! it’s all my fault!”
your mindless babbles seem to humor him and he moves your head at a safer distance. “and why is that?”
“ ‘twas my fault! i put myself in danger if i run. tae, please! i’m so sorry!”
and you cry and cry and cry until you have nothing to give. until there’s only emptiness in your head that’s resting on his shoulder. until his shushes really feel reassuring. until he sits you down at the table to eat the lunch he prepared, the one that was so close to killing you. you nibble on it, too weak to really even taste the flavors.
he breaks the empty silence between you with a question. you startle at the sound of his voice and force your heavy eyes to focus on him.
“aren't you curious? about why i chose you?”
“no.”
he scrunches his eyebrows and regards you with a slightly displeased look that has you shrinking back on your chair.
“but i want to tell you…” he whines.
you don’t say anything about his antics. despite him behaving like a child you’re terrified of what his reaction would be if you actually treated him like one, so you press your lips together and wait.
“i like people that like me.” and it’s so simple how he says it. obvious, even.
“but why do you think i like you?” quietly, meekly.
he seems to like the question, his boxy smile one full of teeth that in other circumstances you would have found endearing. now it only makes him look like a predator, an animal, drool dribbling down his fangs, jaw ready to snap close around your neck if —and ultimately, when— you say or do the wrong thing.
“oh, i was so happy, Y/N,” he coos, your name curling in his mouth with ease, as if you’re always been around each other, as if it belongs there, “that when i chose you, you came with me.”
your mouth gapes open at the absurdity of it all. you wonder if he really thinks that you wanted all of this, that you wanted to be taken from your home. you’d ask your old psychology professor if you’d be correct to label him as a narcissist of sorts. a man with too much power, and free time, and loneliness to exhaust all on himself that he had to go around looking for a scapegoat for his secret misery.
“i didn’t– i didn’t come to you, taehyung. i didn’t have a choice.”
“so you were almost forced to come?”
“no,” it comes out more as a question than an answer and you lower your head in search of a way to rationalize the conversation at hand, “i was completely forced–”
“that’s what you tell yourself,” he retorts before you can even finish your sentence.
“it’s what i know is true,” you spit somewhat offended by his insinuation.
his smile is a sick thing when you raise your head from the food on your plate —cold and uninviting. the smell alone makes you want to throw up.
“are you sure?”
your anger leaves space for an unnerving sense of confusion. “what does that– what?”
your frown deepens as you watch him play around with his lunch. you follow his hands pushing back his glasses on his nose. the sick look of complacency that dances on his face seems to speak words that make the hairs at the back of your neck raise in dreadful anticipation. i know something about you that you don’t, his eyes say, and that alone is enough to make you want to scream.
he knows nothing!, you’d be shouting to the usually calm neighborhood, i haven’t told him anything about myself. he can’t know anything! he knows nothing! he knows nothing! you’d holler to the kids walking home from school hand in hand with their mothers who’d be looking at you with contempt, unaware of who lives among them. a wolf in sheep's clothing that could easily make you look like a psychopath.
you’d do it, you swear to yourself that you’d do it all if it weren’t for the fact that you’ve got the inkling fear that you’ve truly gone mad. the doubt that crawls on your back and makes its way in your ears, slithering then, with much glee into your delusional brain.
how long have you been in this house? his house or the one you bought together once you finished college? did you meet him on a slow rainy day outside a coffee shop or did you catch him staring at you from the window before he broke in and took you from your bed, leaving behind torn sheets and a broken frame with a picture of your friends? does your mind deceive you? are you sane? is he?
it feels like you've had this exact same conversation with him an infinite number of times, always stuck in a loop of unease and sadness that you really can’t explain. loving looks sent your way melt into scary grimaces sometimes and all you can feel is guilt because that’s tae. your tae. the man you chose, the man that chose you.
you realize your vacant eyes are crying when you feel a thumb swipe your cheek with a gentleness that makes your stomach churn in disgust and again a voice tells you that there’s something wrong with you.
“baby, are you alright?”
the way you look at him does nothing to the sick warmth brewing in his stomach. your shiny little doe eyes peeking up at him from under wet lashes, asking for forgiveness that taehyung would never deny you. nose red from the frustration of being lost in your own mind and mouth parted as if to ask him to show you the way, the truth that you seem to have lost.
he stands up and rounds the table to you for you to bury your head in his chest. sobs shake your tired form.
“shh, it’s okay, baby. i swear everything it’s okay. it happens to forget.”
“i’m sorry, tae,” you plead through broken breaths. “i’m so sorry, please.”
he shushes you. lips plant themselves in the crown of your head, a hand rubs at your back soothingly.
Tumblr media
later, in the late evening, you lie in your bed. a bed. the sheets smell of him and the air you breathe does not feel like the one you're used to, but you’re calm. you think you are. maybe.
soft snores sound from behind you and you attempt to turn your head to make sure it’s him.
“tae?” you let out a whisper. not one that expects itself to be heard.
“yeah?” voice hoarse from sleep.
“nothing.”
he buries his nose in the hair at the nape of your neck, inhaling the shampoo he bought for you. “what?”
“just wanted to make sure you were still here.”
“i’m always here, baby.”
you hum.
minutes pass slowly, like molasses, as if the hand of the seconds inside the alarm on your nightstand is fighting an invisible force, a wall of rubber that threatens to bounce time back. you think he’s fallen back asleep. breath slowing, chest heaving, lulling you to slumber.
you close your eyes. “tae?”
he doesn’t answer. a car alarm sounds from outside the closed curtains, its prolonged blaring bringing a certain agitation in your otherwise silent night. a breath of summer wind leaves bumps on your skin in its wake. you sigh and his arms tighten around your torso. an unconscious gesture, soft, loving.
“i dream of you–” you let your words sink into the air, into the boiling water you carry around in your lungs that doesn’t let you breathe properly, and you shiver again but not from the chill bite of the wind “–and it’s slow, and blue, and endless.”
behind you, taehyung’s mouth stretches into a smile.
in a way, you’ve always loved him. he’s certain of it now as he was before. and even if you didn’t, he will always make sure to make it a reality, one way or the other. wether you want it or not.

Now through High School, through much of college, like 80% of my sense of humor consisted of over-the-top death threats and other allusions of violence, and some of my real life associates have reported that this paradoxically had something of a disarming effect, because the ubiquity and creative derangement on display drowned out any sense of authentic rancor. To some degree, these last few years on tumblr have beaten that tendency out of me, because an impression I've picked up around here is that you can layer it under a bunch of cutesy over-the-top rhetoric about baseball bats and kneecap theft but when you scratch that patina of defensive hyperbole you quickly end up with the sense that vast portions of this website very sincerely want each other violently dead. So these days I've been trying to just say what I mean.

This might be an unpopular opinion from all the responses I've seen here on tumblr this past month, but I think this whole Jack Blacklash has been completely blown out of proportion. I think you might all be a little bit too online. I can't believe I'm saying this with a straight face, but I think we might all need to go touch some grass.
Like, I get it, okay? I make jokes that read like death threats all the time about friends and enemies and politicians alike. We all do. But you and I, we're all literal nobodies. Who cares if we end up on some watch list for some off-color humor, we don't have careers. Not huge, public-facing ones that would be horrifically impacted by said off-color humor.
Jack Black is a public figure. He doesn't have the luxury to say the kind of shit or cosign the kinds of jokes that we all do. And I don't think that's fair, and I don't think that's right, but that doesn't change the truth of the matter. Hate the game, not the player. If you actually watch the event in question, he's right there on stage laughing along with the the rest of us. He's explicitly stated since thta he and Kyle still are and always will be friends *and* that Tenacious D isn't over.
But he, and more pointedly, his PR team, cannot allow that sort of joke about a major political figure, no matter how pathetic and fascistic he may be, to fly. And the response really does read more like PR damage control than it does something he actually has his full weight behind when you take into context everything else he's said about the situation since.
"It's just a joke". Yes, I agree, and personally, I'd have commit career suicide and stuck by it because that's the kind of person I'd be in any given spotlight. I'm not interested in celebrity, and I'm not interested in longevity at the expense of unlimited free expression on my part either. But I'm in the minority on that. Most public facing figures have to tow a line with this sort of thing.
Unless they're A) Already in politics, particularly as a right wing chud or B) Deeply entrenched as an edgy comic, and a stand-up comic in particular, then most famous folks cannot get away with an assassination joke like that and not face disastrous, potentially career-ending consequences and a visit from the FBI.
And yes, it's just a joke, but also, stop and think for a second the kind of world you're trying to create here. The alt-right dipshits all over Twitter and Reddit and the rest of the internet already use the same exact excuse of "it's just a joke" to try and get away with wholehearted bigotry and *actual* calls for violence. And yeah, it's bullshit, and usually, everybody knows it. But it's not always so clear.
If Kyle made that quip a bit more dryly and only made it clear it was a joke after the fact, all we'd have to go on is his word. And he's "our guy", so of course we'd take him at his word. Would anybody else? Not just "the other side", but actual, neutral, not terminally online morons? You know, like most of the world's population is? And even with how it *did* unfold where it was *clearly* meant as humor, it still has very real repercussions *immediately following a legitimate assassination attempt*.
You're really tempting fate and cracking open Pandora's Box there if you genuinely think public figures should be held to the same lax standards as us nobodies. As much as I personally loathe respectability politics, I'm not stupid. I understand very well the purpose that they serve in preventing every minor political squabble descending into outright violence, small scale shitstain vs shitstain or full-on civil war.
For a site that loves to complain about everybody else's lack of critical thinking, I've seen a shocking lack of it from everybody here on this particular matter. Just because the guy we hate was the butt of the joke doesn't make the thing that happened 100% okay. This shit can and does have serious consequences.
And now I see some chucklefucks saying shit like "Oh, Jack Black is the new Chris Pratt now", as if Jack Black attends gaybashing mega churches or has a psychotic paramilitary brother he supports or is in any way on any level even remotely as vapid as the crisped rat.
Like, one single choice we don't like because orange man bad, and literal *decades* of good will just evaporates overnight. Hell, some of you pretend like you never even had that good will in the first place, when you verifiably did. It's not like he called you a faggot or pushed an orphan down the stairs, he got spooked about the fact that the FBI might bust his door down because his friend made an off-color joke in front of tens of thousands of people immediately following an assassination attempt. Like??? You call *this* critical thinking???
Honestly, you guys are no smarter than your parents. And if that pisses you off, then stop being stupid and think about something outside yourself for a second and recognize that Hollywood Superstar Jack Black does not have the same privilege of inconsequential mediocre anonymity you and I do. That doesn't automatically make him "bad" or pro Trump. That makes him somebody who gives a shit about keeping his career going for another 30 years.
In summary: touch grass, eat ass, let it pass.

so I finally got done watching S5 of The Dragon Prince and ghgnghghggngh why do I have such a mixed bag love hate relationship with this show (spoilers)
I want to love this show but there's so many things that just don't land and don't work, and yet here I am, hooked once again, because after 8 episodes of cringe humor and weird dialogue it fed me some crumbs of delicious Aaravos content.
I find so many of the accents so goddamn stilted and awkward. The french sun fire elves are the worst. I don't object to french-sounding elves in principle but dear lord does it sound unnatural and strained
SO much of the humor just does not land and the pacing of individual scenes is just ??? ATLA had some very kiddie humor here or there too, and I love the somewhat darker and more mature tone of TDP but jfc it feels like they need to hammer every joke home with so much time that you'd think they were planning for a laugh track
ep 8 and 9 were so much better than the whole rest of the season because once this show lets itself focus on action and drama, it's actually pretty fucking good, but for some reason you need to get through a first half season of awkward goofs.
Terry annoys me so much. Yay trans rep, but why the utterly random coming out out of nowhere (that was S04 I know but I watched it very recently okay) and his whole sounding like a therapist shit towards Claudia, like yes, it could be funny that this random wood elf does aroma therapy on his dark mage gf but everything somehow turns awkward in the execution
The library showdown was generally cool but the framing for why Amaya told them to leave without her was so fucking weird: you have this moment of Dragon Ex Machina, Zubeia wiping away the demon bears with ease, and then suddenly when Amaya is back in the frey after grabbing Bait, they're suddenly out of time and need to leave that instant??? Like I see what they were going for, obviously Zubeia was under real threat from the demon bears, but imo the framing/visualization of that threat did not work at all and I audibly went "WHY" at my screen at the random "you have to leave without me" thing.
That being said there's some shit that goes extremely hard and I'm here for it:
Rayla just fucking dismembering Claudia apparently wtf??
I enjoyed the sexy fish pirate man, I hope he survived getting eaten
I am an utter addict for Aaravos' voice and even the flashback repetitions in Janai's nightmares were legit enough to get my attention again
I am very excited for how someone is going to end up saving Viren's life against his will and I will gladly read fanfic of it
I had the 'our child' thing spoiled by being careless on tumblr but seeing it actually on screen was better than expected, love that for my OTP, toxic af parenthood is just what they needed
I really expected there to be more Aaravos since this show got renamed to Mystery of Aaravos false advertising smh.
They got creative with Dragon designs this season and I support that
out of all the things I found weird and cringe, I am 100% here for Zubaia getting randomly healed by a funky little gnome that calls himself the mushroom mage, 10/10 no notes
young viren hot
Rayla and Callum worked much better for me towards the end of the season when they got more comfortable with each other, love that for them, some delicious drama when the sexy fish man tortures them in front of each other, good for them, that's my shit
Considering all the things I liked about the last 2-3 episodes I feel nitpicky and weird for complaining about the first 7 or so but UGH it was a bit of a pain to get through them tbh. There is so much I deeply, deeply appreciate about what this show tries to do, as a high fantasy kids show with an overarching story, gorgeous visuals and explicit lgbtq and disability rep that I feel like an ass for complaining about it so much, but god damn there are so many things that are just unbearably cringe about it and OH MY GOD I just remembered the god damn "maybe you should express your love like a bee, here just move your tushy like that" scene holy FUCK can someone please give me an edit of this show with about three times the Aaravos screentime and all this second hand embarassment removed

Ahem.
Letterboxd: “thriller”, “drama”; Wikipedia: “erotic thriller”, “psychological thriller” Me: uhh what?? This is obviously a romcom
For real, the tone of this movie was so weird I couldn’t tell if it was humorous on purpose or overly cheesy by accident, but I laughed at least as much as I do during actual comedies, maybe more. Funniest title drop of the decade?
The session at the beginning was kind of silly and dragged a bit too much; I was very impatient to get to the real deal. Plus, I wasn’t feeling any power or charisma from Rebecca when she was just going off the script. I mean, what do I know, but she was honestly giving the energy of that one old Tumblr gif of a guy ineffectively whipping his bed; and she looked so young and fragile (does her mother know that she’s out?). It’s only when she became genuinely unhinged I started buying it. Her actress also overacted, imo, and combined with the contrived script and the kind of cheap music and camera work that made it hard to take the movie seriously. On the other hand, I don’t think I was supposed to.
More about the opening scene – I felt frustrated by the revelation that Rebecca was just acting out what he wrote the entire time, and assumed that frustration was shared by the character herself, that she couldn’t wait to stop being an actress and start improvising her own lines. So I was surprised by her confession at the end that she wanted to keep the status quo. It’s so clearly unbalanced – he got to act out his fantasies down to the tiniest detail but she was supposed to be satisfied catering to him? I guess she was just reaching for whatever was available, and getting a different job where she’d get to be mean and bossy on her own terms as an actual boss was the real fulfillment that she could not even imagine at the beginning of the story.
Rebecca’s occupation provides only an illusion of power or stability (is it even legal in the US?), and her happy ending is a promotion to one of the most powerful and prestigious jobs one can think of. But that “happy ending” is also the epitome of capitalist selfishness: the literal elevator pitch is that she can and should be as mean and as self-serving as she wants, “and it doesn’t matter if you're right or wrong”, with no thought given to the great responsibility this great power entails. As a woman, I’m cheering for Rebecca’s empowerment; as someone tired of overpaid and shortsighted CEOs, I’m disturbed.
It’s interesting that Rebecca gives herself credit for teaching Hal how to ask for what he wants – but fails to do the same until the last act of the film. Was this intentional? On a similar note, the seductive threat that Rebecca makes to Hal in the middle of the film is that she will leave the confidential confines of the hotel room and take over his real life. He denied that the sex they’d been having had any real impact on him – now it would have unavoidable consequences. She had been his dirty secret – now she would be the father of his child. He’d been a self-hating son living in the shadow of his father, it had been a defining part of his identity — now he would not be allowed to be that anymore, because it would be his turn to be a responsible father taking care of his own son, to be a role model to him. In the middle of the story, all of this is merely a taboo fantasy. At the end, it’s reality: Hal declares he “was meant for” the job of being Rebecca’s full-time “slave” (direct quotes), and is about to give his business to her and to introduce her to his family as his romantic partner. What both of them wanted all along was for their relationship to become real.
The two leads felt pretty balanced in terms of being fucked up / being the one to root for (unlike, say, Phantom Thread). While I was duly sympathetic to the mortifying ordeal of the enormous trust and privacy breach, overall this is the closest a recent movie viewing had me to being on the team “eat the rich”.
The plot feels so classic – a clever and vicious lower class woman refusing to let go of a rich heir both for pragmatic and romantic reasons… Or, to put it another way, a sex worker falling for her client and proceeding to do the same stuff as before but for free — which has got to be an ancient wish-fulfillment trope. I’m sure there are tons of centuries old stories with this kind of premise out there. Especially stage plays. Surely I’m not alone in feeling this was a stage play slightly adapted for the screen?
Speaking of the stage, another aspect of this movie that feels very familiar is an actor whose role bleeds into their real life and personality, and the power struggle between an actor and the demands that the director makes towards them. And here’s where the connection with the film I saw before this one comes in! (This time it’s entirely accidental, unlike my usual attempts to set up a slow marathon of thematically overlapping movies.) Both in Vertigo and in Sanctuary, the man in a traditional position of power enters a relationship with a woman who operates on the border of polite society, and the man idolizes the woman, but only within a specific fetishized role tailored to his taste. The approaches of the two films to the same premise are of course entirely different, so there’s not much point in comparing them, but the coincidence is fun. I have an idea what to watch next to keep the daisy chain going: apparently I need to look up the genre of screwball comedy, I don’t think I’ve seen a single one of those.
Anyway, the material here would benefit from an approach that explored gender, class, labor, and the border between performance and reality more seriously — but it’s unfair to blame a film for not doing what it never aimed to do. I like 90 minutes films, I like characters balancing on the border between performance and sincerity, I like low budget stories about two people stuck in a room together and driving each other insane, I like power struggles and elaborate mind games, and I was definitely entertained.

Okay this is the last im going to post about this but it irks me enough that i feel like im going to make a final statement on it
Being disappointed it wasnt hlvrai2 and finding the joke of the bait and switch not particularly funny, posting about that on your own personal blog or even in the tags ✅️ valid, it was okay to be upset within reason
Finding the joke funny and enjoying the stream regardless of being disappointed ✅️ you're allowed to find the stream funny, the joke of the bait and switch funny, the whole thing a fun time, etc
Appreciating that depite the stream being a bit of a fake out, the crew put a ton of work and effort into it and its clear they were passionate about it ✅️ dont shit on the stream for the only reason of it not being hlvrai2, ya know?
Expressing that you were upset to the crew via death threats, being rude or nasty in the twitch chat, posting rude statements in thr tags (tho ive not seen this in particular on tumblr, mainly just via twitch) 🚫 holy shit dont fucking do that, the crew doesnt owe anyone hlvrai2 and being nasty to people you dont know over the internet is a shitty thing to do
Dunking on hlvrai fans for being "autistic babies who need to be bullied" or being "annoying and not real rtvs fans" (yes i have actually seen people say this in the tags) 🚫 what the fuck is wrong with you people are allowed to be upset that the thing they thought was happening wasnt actually happening, no one deserves to be bullied and harrassed over it you asshole
Telling people they should have found it funny/not funny 🚫 you cant and shouldnt try to control how people feel about it. Some people dont like feeling dunked on. Some people find it funny. No one needs to be nasty to anyone over it.
Telling people they should have expected it all to be a joke 🚫 not every hlvrai fan is a rtvs fan and there was plenty of reason to have expected it to be hlvrai2. Not everyone is familiar with rtvs style of humor.
Overall the extreme behavior i have seen on both sides (but mainly people dunking on hlvrai fans for being upset, as that seems to be way more common than hlvrai fans being mean or nasty) has been an absolute nuclear level of shitty. This whole thing can and should be approached with nuance and respect for peoples opinions. I am begging for everyone to try and be nice to each other and understand where people are coming from. If i see anyone exhibiting extreme behavior on either side, you're getting blocked.
Okay im done with this topic now

AI: Same As We Never Admitted It Was
(This column is posted at www.StevenSavage.com, Steve's Tumblr, and Pillowfort.  Find out more at my newsletter, and all my social media at my linktr.ee)
(I’d like to discuss Large Language Models and their relatives – the content generation systems often called AI.  I will refer to them as “AI” in quotes because they may be artificial, but they aren’t intelligent.)
Fears of “AI” damaging human society are rampant as of this writing in May of 2023.  Sure, AI-generated Pizza commercials seem creepily humorous, but code-generated news sites are raking in ad sales and there are semi-laughable but disturbing political ads.  “AI” seems to be a fad, a threat, and a joke at the same time.
But behind it all, even the laughs, is the fear that this stuff is going to clog our cultures with bullshit.  Let me note that bullshit has haunted human society for ages.
Disinformation has been with us since the first criminal lied about their whereabouts.  It has existed in propaganda and prose, skeevy gurus and political theater.  Humans have been generating falsehoods for thousands of years without computer help – we can just do it faster.
Hell, the reason “AI” is such a threat is that humans have a long history of deception and the skills to use it.  We got really good doing this, and now we’ve got a new tool.
So why is it so hard for people to admit that the threat of “AI” exists because of, well, history?
Perhaps some people are idealists.  To admit AI is a threat is to admit that there are cracks and flaws in society where propaganda and lies can slither in and split us apart.  Once you admit that you have to acknowledge this has always been happening, and many institutions and individuals today have been happily propagandizing for decades.
Or perhaps people really wanted to believe that the internet was the Great Solution to ignorance, as opposed to a giant collection of stuff that got half-bought out by corporations.  The internet was never going to “save” us, whatever that means.  It was just a tool, and we could have used it better.  “AI” isn’t going to ruin it – it’ll just be another profit-generating tool for our money-obsessed megacorporate system, and that will ruin things.
Maybe a lot of media figures and pundits don’t want to admit how much of their jobs are propaganda-like, which is why they’re easily replaced with “AI.”  It’s a little hard to admit how much of what you do is just lying and dissembling period.  It’s worse when a bunch of code may take away your job of spreading advertising and propaganda.
Until we admit that the vulnerabilities society has to “AI” are there because of issues that have been with us for a while, we’re not going to deal with them.  Sure we’ll see some sensationalistic articles and overblown ranting, but we won’t deal with the real issues.
Come to think of it, someone could probably program “AI” to critique “AI” and clean up as a sensationalist pundit.  Now that’s a doomsday scenario.

Peacekeeping
Simon Riley x reader
Ok so ......ghost simps ..please tell me what do we think about ghost Simon as a body gard with a UN peacekeeping diplomat who is not only have mental health in a ditch with incredible ( or none at all ) humor and they also simp on him like 24*7*365.
Let's just think that due to their accidental prone self she get constantly kidnapped because not only she accidental but she keep going to these oppressed nation and questioning the bullcrap of oppressor of country at world stage.
Now because of this they are now going to some real imp mission in (let's not say name of an country there are too many to choose from ) but because of several threats she have to take her safety seriously and not be sucidal af -enter our baby girl SIMON GHOST
My guy is not impressed by their humor or her sucidal bull crap but but he does kinda admire their boldness (and stupidity) to throw herself in for the cause
*insue absolute dark humor as coping mechanism fuled by sole power to woo a man for the first time their whole goddamn life *
Simon is unimpressed .
Well our baby will keep it up to woo him then mission is over for Simon but now ..ooohhh he have an admirer so they will follow him every where he goes like even las almas Chicago uk if he is there they are with him .
Simon will get fed-up which will cause ..some real bad rejection (like having a PTSD from that rejection kinda rejection)
Then after our oh so poor heartbroken reader will go home ..
Not in metamorphic way but they will return to home town . Then after some time our Simon with 141 get deployed here and suddenly he thinks we are not a shit anymore but remember we got PTSD!!!
So here we will get our angst to fluff (not explaining cuz (don't worry I won't use this kind of abrivation in the story) I don't wanna spoil anything)
Then how should it end ....idk
Sad ending - reader dies. Why cuz while she was in her home for so long all her haters know her location so pew pew pew
Happy ending - literally how do you end anything at good note at the end every happy time come to an end and we all die
Open end - I don't have that much of a big brain 🧠🤡
So I am writing this (also my first time writing anything on Tumblr I do not know what is what so I sincerely call upon the veteran who knows what they are doing to guide a novice.
Also your own suggestion or headcanons anything are welcome.
(last thing I am not native English speaker so please if you find any mistake TELL ME)
Ok byeeeee 💀

Movie Night
Tumblr media
Robin Buckley x fem!Reader
summary: you and robin sit next to each other while watching a movie and you, close to sleep, realize just how gorgeous she is
1.4k words
warnings: none really i don’t think
tumblr messing up my spacing part 4
There was nothing you'd rather do on a Friday night than watch a movie with your best friends. Sure, there were plenty of parties and other friends inviting you out, and you'd love to attend, but there was nothing more fun to you than weekly movie nights. Over the past 3 years of monster hunting, everyone in the party (plus the honorary older members that have been acquired throughout the years) looked forward to hanging out without the threat of Hawkins tearing open and the Upside Down peaking through. You all had decided to make it a weekly tradition after Vecna attacked the teens of Hawkins. This week was Pretty in Pink picked by "Nancy" (Steve). Usually, you would have been excited to see Pretty in Pink, it was one of your favorites, but you were in the mood for something more exhilarating for the night.
After graduating from Hawkins High School this past June, you had tried to get a job in town, but the only one that accepted you was Melvalds. It was a fine job, paid a good amount, and kept you busy, but it was boring, and while you were grateful for the 5 months without any life-threatening situations, the attacks did break the "Nothing Happens in Hawkins" reputation the small town had just 4 years ago. Recently, though, when nothing was happening, it was nice to watch a thrilling movie to get your heart rate up. You weren't gonna argue with watching it, though. The group had a careful system of who got to pick the movie, implemented after the third or fourth movie night in which Dustin and Mike had an altercation over who should pick.
Since the last two people to pick the movies were you and Robin, you were banished to the floor, a fact that Steve was eager to remind you two of the minute you entered the house. So now here you all are, scattered across Steve's basement about 5 minutes into Pretty in Pink, and your eyelids were already dropping. You were on the cusp of slumber when Robin nudged your side.
"Hey, are you okay?" she asked you worriedly.
You tried to give her a coherent response but you really didn't have the energy to want to. You groaned lightly, not opening your eyes.
"I can't understand when you mumble, Y/N," she said lightly, nudging you again.
"God, you sound like my mom... or Steve." You both chuckled lightly. Steve, who was sitting on the couch you were leaning on, nudged your back with his knee, making you laugh harder. You finally picked your head up and looked at Robin. She was smiling humorously at you but you could tell she was worried. Robin had always been terrible at hiding her emotions. You sighed and relaxed your neck, your head lulling forward.
"What's going on? I thought you loved this movie," she questioned while tilting her head.
"I do..." was all Robin heard before you fell back into mumbling. Robin knew what you meant though and hummed in response.
"You know, you don't have to come here every week, you work your ass off, it's okay if you wanna get a headstart on your sleep sometimes."
You smiled, picking your head up again and looking at Robin. "I know, I love spending time with you guys though, no matter how tired I am or how boring the movie is."
"Whoa, did you just call Pretty in Pink boring? You must be exhausted," She nudged you again. Robin's reassuring smile then turned into a real one. A bright one. A beautiful one.
Has she always been this beautiful?
"Were glad you're here, but you need your rest sometimes."
"Thank you for worrying, Robin, but-"
"Can you guys be quiet? We're trying to watch a movie," Dustin snapped from across the room, the popcorn in his hands flying wildly as he gestured his hands. You and Robin looked at each other and started giggling before settling back into the bottom of the couch, more comfortable than before.
You made it maybe 10 more minutes into the movie before relaxing onto Robin's shoulder and letting sleep overcome you. Robin sighed and rested her head on yours, feeling more comfortable than either of you had felt in a long time.
—————————
When you had woken up, the basement was empty with the exception of you and Robin in the same position as you had been so many hours before. Without moving your head, you glanced at the digital clock next to the television.
6:32 AM
You shut your eyes for a long time, dreading getting up to drive home, only to have to get ready for work. Robin must have noticed your sudden tensity, for she started to stir.
"Mmm, Y/N," she groaned and rolled her head from you to the now empty couch. You picked your head up slowly and stretched your sore neck. Still slightly groggy with sleep, you look over at Robin.
How is she even more beautiful when she's asleep?
You sighed deeply and tilted your head while admiring her beauty before standing and stretching your stiff body. Begrudgingly, you left her to make some breakfast in Steve's kitchen.
Out of the corner of your eye, while munching on a bland piece of toast, you saw Robin stumbling into the room.
"Morning sunshine," you said blandly, smiling at the disheveled girl while starting the coffee maker. She grumbled in response, slumping against the counter. "Sleep well?"
"I always sleep well next to you," she smiled lightly, looking down at her feet, "but, maybe it would've been better if we had laid down, my neck hurts so bad."
You giggled at her before fully realizing what she had said. I always sleep better next to you. The thought of the possible romantic intention behind it made your stomach flutter. You looked down at your feet and smiled into our toast.
"Enjoying my coffee?"
You and Robin both looked up startled to find Steve standing in the doorway, one hand on his hip, the other rubbing his eye. Robin glanced at you with a playful smile before returning her gaze downward.
"Thanks for letting us stay the night, Steve," you said with a smile, putting down the coffee cup.
"Yeah, yeah, don't mention it," He waved his hand as he spoke, his eyes flicking between you and Robin. "Hey, uh, you guys need a ride home?"
"Oh no no, I drove last night, I'll be outta here in a second," you smiled, suddenly feeling overwhelmingly like a burden.
"I do, Steve," Robin looked up and smiled awkwardly.
You and Steve exchanged a glance. He raised his eyebrows once. You returned it with a confused look. He tilted his head annoyed and rolled his eyes.
"Uh, well since Y/N is already driving herself home, Im sure she can take you."
"Uh, oh yeah. Yeah! I-I can!" you stumbled over your words. Robin's face brightened exponentially.
"Oh great!" She smiled at you, almost longingly, if you had to put it into words. Steve's cough interrupted the moment.
"Okay, well, you two lovebirds have fun, I'm gonna go back to my comfy bed."
You and Robin exchanged a glance, both blushing furiously. Steve examined the scene and turned to go back up the stairs.
"Let's get going, shall we?" you said awkwardly. Robin nodded and followed you out of the house.
"Hey about what Steve said-" you began once you were both sitting in your car.
"Don't worry about it! Steve's a dick, he'll say anything if he thinks it'll make me awkward. Plus, were like the only girls who like girls that he knows so, of course, he's gonna do something-" Robin rushed out, but couldn't finish her thoughts because of your interruption.
"Why would what he said make you awkward?" You feigned innocence.
"Oh! Uh, I don't know what I was thinking, sor-" She wasn't able to finish her apology before you managed to place a swift kiss on her lips.
"Whoa mama," Robin chuckled nervously, "ew, why did I say that- you know what, I don't care." She kissed you again, all of the pent-up emotion she had been harboring for you finally escaping. "I've been wanting to do that for a long time," Robin said, leaning her forehead against yous. You both sat there in Steve's driveway, smiling and as happy as could be.

Please give me the forbidden Goncharov discourse 👀
so for context, this comes from a post by tumblr user lastoneout that reads:
turns out tumblr does have reading comprehension and the ability to analyze a complex text through multiple frameworks and have a nuanced discussion while doing so but apparently we were all saving it up to have nuanced discussions about a fake movie with no actual text to analyze
and then my tags on the post, which read:
#this is so funny but i maintain it's the only unrealistic thing about goncharov (1973) #like you mean to tell me the fandom on tumblr is this huge and yet there's not one hate blog? #there's not a core group of haters posting the most deranged piss on the poor shit in the tag? #no discourse? no anon hate? #christ but there's not a single poc in it come on tumblr i've not seen a single person get called a racist for liking it #this is a glimpse into what peace on planet earth would look like #(ironically i do have some deep analysis for why this might be but i will spare op lmao)
now forgive me if this makes no sense, because this is the first time I have tried to articulate it before, and of course in keeping with the theme it's about a fake movie (cinematic masterpiece Goncharov, (1973) dir. Martin Scorsese).
with the obvious out of the way first: Goncharov is a fictional movie, it does not exist, and therefore there it nothing to say about the real-world issues associated with lack of representation. this means we can skip that in actuality, though if we're looking at it from the perspective of a real movie and how it would be regarded on Tumblr, I'm sure that there would be related discourse. however, this is not real, so we can focus on the more entertaining, light-hearted sides of fandom. and this is universally what Goncharov posts were like: gifsets, fanart, humorous and well-written textual analysis, deep and pretentious photosets and quotes, everything that you love to see. but it was odd, in terms of realism, that there were no haters at all. which made me wonder: why are there haters when it comes to real things, but not when it comes to fake ones? part of this is what's mentioned above: in real life, there are some dynamics and trends and issues that can and do have a very real impact on society, or represent aspects of society that should change. but I can't help think it was something else, too.
I mentioned in my tags hate blogs specifically, because in real fandoms, you can easily find hate blogs that have absolutely nothing to do with any real, tangible criticism. it is just vitriolic hate: of a character, of a book/film, of an actor or actress involved, or some combination of these. there's no actual criticism, and very often there are massive feats of mental gymnastics used to make fans of [character] or [thing] look bad. it is just seething hatred, all directed towards something that is supposed to be entertainment; it's supposed to be fun! so why do some people take something harmless and make their entire personalities about hating it -- as well as spending significant parts of their day talking shit, getting into arguments, and even sending anon hate and threats to fans? it's because there are some people out there who like to hate things. they don't seem to like having fun. anything fun that comes their way, they have to pick holes in it; they have to have something negative to say to it. deep down, they know this is a very sad way to live. they know there's a difference between being a casual hater who likes to bitch about things in private with friends, or make the occasional joke or rant online -- and running a literal blog dedicated to hating something. they know there's a difference and they don't want to admit that they're losers, so they dress it up as something noble. these days, it's usually activism. this also explains the mental gymnastics, the reaches, the "fans of [character] are -ist or -phobic" shit. they're applying a thin coat of legitimacy to the fact that they're irrationally angry about something completely pointess, and there are a lot of people out there who seem to think this is a good and beneficial way to spend their time.
even among fans, there are some who seem to be having a bad time. I have looked at certain posts or blogs before and wondered to myself if the person even actually likes it, or if at this point they're just hostage to nostalgia or the idea of it (either the potential or their fan version of the universe) and they can't just call it quits. these people are not the same as the previously described, as they don't make their whole lives about hating something, but they're clearly miserable and could do with moving on, and they do contribute to the kinds of critical and often aggressive posts missing from the Goncharov project. the absence of this, as well as the more unhinged hatred, does leave a pretty obvious gap in the believability of the film's existence, and this is... rather depressing, really.
the thing that allowed Goncharov to be a peaceful experience was because of the fact that it wasn't real, and everyone knew it. but this should be applied to all films and books: they are not real. while some criticisms are valid (such as the terrible writing that female characters are often subject to, or the lack of representation in popular cinema, etc) a lot of the hate comes from interpersonal beef about characters, and these people aren't real. it's a very strange thing to witness: that so many people are capable of understanding that Goncahrov and Katya etc aren't real, and therefore there's no point getting mad about them, but they cannot carry that over to any other fictional character. the film's unreality is part of the joke, woven into it from the foundations, and so no hater, no matter how deranged, could possibly take themselves seriously hating it. instead they have to resort to complaining about the joke itself, and how annoying it is, but the content remains completely hater-free. it's an absolutely fascinating glimpse at the complete breakdown of the line between reality and fiction on this website -- Goncharov came from within, and its construction and creation was there for all to see, whereas other media seems to spring to the consumer fully formed and therefore with some kind of mystery that awards it a certain flair of legitimacy. I don't mean to say that anyone thinks it's real, but certainly they seem to think it's more serious, and worth getting worked up over. but none of it is real, none of it is worth getting worked up over, but for some reason it seems that when a creation comes from one's peers, this mystery is removed and the complete pointlessness and inanity of getting into fights online over fictional characters and events is illuminated in all its glory.

And as I've said, our (most of our fandom) reaction that you've seen is only a cumulation of the previous things and the poll kinda unearthed that. Because you're completely right, the poll was skewed at whatever it wanted to do. Give us criteria, we'll get better at picking. Still, the poll (as I've said) was not the main topic, nor the reason for the whole blowup.
You see, the problem with big fandoms, in my experience (HP, TWD, just to name two examples) don't calm down. Quoting Teal'c from Starate, "they do, in fact, calm up". By which I mean not even a bit.
Besides, I think a year is enough to calm down a bit about... 5h of material, I'd say (going with the maths). The problem here, that I see, and I can be completely wrong, was not that fans are rabid. We have some rabid fans here as well... actually I think most of us are pretty rabid, that's why we bite instead of being all chill and letting anyone trample all over our show for the greater good. We're bite-y, because people were biting us. I dug even deeper into the whole drama right under the poll. You know... our fans making jokes about how Fint would smash Stede into nothing... I get it, maybe out humor is not for everyone, fair enough, but what do people expect? We've actually been pretty chill, joking around (I've seen two threats there towards real people, not the characters, and they've been the usual vague "I'll come in and piss in your bed" type of thing that I've seen tons of on Tumblr, so really, I don't see a big deal. If it is for someone, I apologize), but then we get called out for being Mean TM, and OFMD fandom starts doubling down on weird comments. Cool, what do we do? Same shit everyone else would, we double down, too. It's what everyone would do. Or at least what you could expect from a community of passionate fans of a TV series about dismantling the British Empire, fighting for your rights when you've been wronged, etc, etc. It's the only natural for us (the show didn't make us like that, people flock to shows that they can identify with. We've been like that before; we love BS because we're like that). Honestly, what did anyone expect? A pirate show about a guy wronged by the system gets bashed by unicorns. Of course we took up our swords and went to battle. Same shit would happen if you put in, say, TWD.
But I digress. And I'm not saying all this to justify anything, again, I'm just observing a mechanism here. Because I still think the biggest fault in all this goes to the poll creator.
As for obscurity, we don't mind that our fandom is small! Actually, we mostly like a small, nice fandom to stew in. We won't ever be big. It's not about that. Sure, it gets quiet here sometimes (the last shitstorm notwithstanding ofc), but that's not the problem. The problem is, we treat our show very seriously, and - more importantly - the show treated us seriously. It did what research it could about the era. Is it perfect? No, god no. Could more have been done? Sure, always. But the way the era - a very problematic era - is treated is way better and more responsible than any other pirate show up to day, short of straight out documentaries. It is a very important value. It has many important political points, as well as ideological and how to handle that. If it hadn't been so filled with sex and gore, I would probably schedule a screening at school for kids to learn some useful shit about how world and history operates. And then your goofy show comes in and sure, people like goofy shows, good for them. Like I've said, I don't begrudge anyone liking lighthearted romcoms. I just hate it when other fandoms encroach on our turf and act just like OFMD fandom did. The moaning and whining on twitter a year ago was hilarious for about 5 minutes, then it just got annoying. And don't get me started about the "well where's Flint fucking then?", "where are your gays at???" or my favorite, and that's a literal quote from a tumblr post (I won't tag it but it's still accessible on tumblr, I checked recently - out of spite, I admit) "i think the reason ofmd hit me harder than black sails in terms of queer rep is that no one in black sails is punished for being queer". EXCUSE? ME? WHAT? You know what's worst? BS still gets tagged in those posts. This is just a search result for statistics for one way of writing the Izzy/Flint godforsaken pairing. But, and that's the real problem for me, OFMD fandom doesn't really know when to stop. I think all the rainbows and unicorns (I'm using this lightly, with a wink, not to get anyone mad) got a bit to their heads and skewed the actual image of the world. We don't want to see this, we don't want to be tagged in it, period. We tried to explain, over and over again, and at some point you just get angry. I think the 21st century view on queerness is somehow "you have to love it or you're a homophobe, no matter how bad it is". And, I also think, this is why BS fans didn't try to pussyfoot around, didn't beat around the bush with coming in and being rude and sometimes aggressive. We are not raised to accept everything at face value and we have a show that - for us - is the height of any possible TV series dream. And we will defend it, to the bitter end if that's what it takes. Because nobody can convince us to tolerate something for the greater good.
Would it be better to chill out, lay down our weapons and just accept that another fandom is slightly rabid right now but it will surely calm down in... 4 years (was it?)? Probably. Are we going to do it? No. We feel hurt and disrespected now, and we won't wait for the unspecified future to see if this social experiment works.
Accessibility - one could argue about the accessibility of Stargate SG1 as well (20 episodes per season, 10 seasons), and yet that doesn't seem to be a problem. The heaviness could be a bigger factor here, or maybe the political and historical intrigue. But then, look at it from the other side. You say it's a silly rom-com, and true enough, it is. Now imagine people being passionate about politics of the 18th century, about history and queer representation back then, seeing the show as the current pinnacle of TV abilities being told that... well, that something less complicated is better, something simpler is better. Something set in a problematic era, done completely without any regard for said era, without due realism or a mention of struggles, is better. You know how that sounds somewhere at the back of our brains? This silliness is better than thinking. I know it's not the truth, and I know it isn't supposed to come out like this. And for the record, I'm not calling anyone stupid (nor am I saying your show is stupid). But that is what the ultimate message is. Wouldn't you get a little mad that somebody is advocating - in your show's tag, nevertheless - for loving something less thought out and leave the extremely relatable serious and thought-out thing behind? You would be mad, too. I know you would. Because I'm sitting on the other side of this particular fence and I know I am. Again, no hard feelings, it's just what comes across, no matter the intentions.
And sure, it's probably a small part of your fandom doing that, but I don't see the rest being reasonable. Or vocally reasonable. Or advocating to leave us be. The shitshow that happened on twitter when OFMD came out was just that, a shitshow, and it wasn't pretty. And no, I haven't seen one person from OFMD advocating to stop the fighting. Actually, it usually goes like it did in the tags on that dumb, unfortunate poll - "I haven't watched BS but I bet Flint is stupid so I vote Stede". Well, dear tagging person, you aren't earning any positive points with that.
While on the topic of fans being assholes - I've had many disagreements within BS fandom, because no fandom is perfect. We fought about opinions, too, and that happens quite often, actually. But the quarrels are meaningful discussions. You know what happened when I posted my rant that, in essence, said why I love BS and just said what most of OFMD fandom says about their show - that is, it's a silly, historically inaccurate romcom? I got two anonymous DMs with one calling me immature for having a different opinion, the other (I suspect by the same author) dragging Johnny Depp into the discussion and being decidedly pro-Amber. My friend got a handful of messages calling her a cunt and telling her to go to hell, another of BS fans got death threats in their inbox. Is that... like... chill and cool behavior? Is that normal people? Because disagreements within our fandom usually end with a "agree to disagree and let's now focus on destroying the British Empire" and we're back to normal. With OFMD I see some straight abusive little shits who are too chicken to come into my inbox with their names displayed and spewing shit left and right.
And don't apologize for them. You're not the fandom. Actually you're the second person - since the show has come out - that I managed to talk to like with a normal, reasonable human being. You shouldn't be apologizing for them, they should be apologizing for themselves. But you, and other normal fans around you, should be aware that it's not the show we have the biggest problem with, but the OFMD fandom, and until the bad eggs in it get reasonable, I don't see us getting reasonable either. It is reactive in how ferocious it is now. Because it had been too long and we're too angry.
And don't watch it out of obligation, that's the worst thing you can do. Watch it when you feel like it, not because the tumblr drama told you to. I fucked up Pratchett for myself for long years because I went with someone's advice of "you actually completely and absolutely have to read it. It gets better after the first three parts, trust me." Don't do this to yourself. You want unicorns, keep to them. When you feel like gritty takedown of historical misconstrued notions, then come to BS :)
And the "cancel OFMD" comments are a ridiculous argument because a) they won't ever be picked out of all the detritus by any meaningful company making shows, and b) if it's how people feel... then it's how people feel. We don't live in a world that lacks representation, and trust me, I know what I'm saying. I live in Poland. I got called names and slurs for holding hands with my gf (I'm bi). I didn't get attacked physically, but it was close two times. Girls often don't get punched because they're girls and somehow considered less in every respect, so not worth the effort as well. Men in my country - fuck, in my own city - got beaten half to death for having pink hair. A teenager almost died because a group of grown-ass assholes kicked him around so hard. The church here, along with the government, is doing what they can to make any lgbtq person illegal. I know what being marginalized means. And even I wouldn't mind a bad show being cancelled, instead of being kept there just because it's "representation". And no, again, I'm not calling OFMD a bad show, because it's subjective and you have a right to like it. I'm saying it as a hypothesis, as in [insert any given bad queer show] here.
And again, enjoying it? Good. Liking weird pairings? Cool. Just... stop tagging our show in it when it's such a wrong take because we WILL react. We're protective of our poor, darling characters.
The phrase about something walking for something else to run is just that, a phrase. And it means what you described. I paraphrased it with the crawling for added drama. No dispute here. But then again, half of what people were saying (and I don't CARE if the fandom is bigger than the couple of loudmouths being rabid, you have to be aware they throw shade on the whole group, sadly, and you can't blame us for reacting to them and taking them as the sample) back when OFMD was airing for the first time, was like it was the next coming of Christ and the best thing since sliced bread, like it was so revolutionary to have QUEER CHARACTERS being QUEER (Star Trek DS9 was one of the first, I believe?) with POC having something to say and being represented! (Ugh... I won't even go down that lane, I don't think I would finish the list today). Like... yes, we're bitter about that part. Call it what it is - a fluffy queer show. But when you're calling it revolutionary because XYZ, people with other shows that did it before your will come for your ass, and you need to be aware of that.
Besides I had a good laugh when Taika and the crew published that video after the finale that said it was a queer show by queer people for queer people. Or something along these lines. And I'm there, a bi girl in a country that hates people like me, wanting to be represented... Where? And plz, let's not do the "season 2 is said to have lesbians!" You either have representation and you use it as an argument, or you don't. Until you don't, you can't use it, or people will call you out on it (and BS fandom did. And got brushed off with rude comments, and then went angry and oh how dare we... see what I mean?)
Don't apologize! I enjoy talking to people, as long as they're not hurling invectives my way (or Flint's way). It's been a pleasure to actually have a meaningful conversation. Feel free to ignore or respond at your leisure :)
Oh boy... OH BOY... I was reading through comments and tags under that Flint vs. Stede post (and before that in Silver vs. Oluwande post) and OH BOY RANT INCOMING
Feel free to ignore. No, I'm prickly about this.
I LOVE how people are like "Black Sails fans are so mean why are they like that T.T ?" in the tags and comments.
LET ME TELL YOU.
So we have this show that has been marginalized and has been pushed to the side for years. A show that has excellent plot, wonderful intrigue, magnificent representation and well-written, 3D characters that are complex and relatable. You get your edgy queer men (whether you want to characterize Flint as gay or bi, doesn't change the fact that he likes dick whichever way), you get your edgy queer girls (Anne), you get your flamboyant whatever-the-fuck-Jack-Rackham-is (<3), you get sweet gays (Thomas), you get confused bisexuals (Eleanor, Silver), you get straight sweets (Miranda) and straight angery dicks (Woodes Rogers), and competent, edgy straights (Vane). Oh! A competent, master-of-the-house lesbian? Check (Max). You even have asexuals, or that is what I shall forever classify Billy as. You have a f/f sex scene in the first damn episode, ffs. You get threesomes (sexual, romantic), you get couples, you even have Silver in a brothel orgy.
But sexual representation is not ALL! You get goofy pirates (Jack Rackham), you get serious pirates (Blackbeard), you get balls of rage (Flint), you get chill, laid-back sea dogs (Gates), you get competent little weasels (Silver), you get incompetent rats (Dufrense). You also have marvelous extras and side characters (Beauclerc the marksman, Captain Fruit-Fruit, Idelle... OHMYGOD IDELLE <3333).
There's the political plot that's historically accurate, the story's plot that's Flint's big gay rage, there's the sociological context of being painted as a monster, there's the gold hunt, there are ships correctly operated by crews of more than five fucking people, there are guns, blood and realistic injuries. You get quotations and allusions to Shakespeare, Cervantes, Julius Caesar, Marcus Fucking Aurelius, a metric ton of other classical writers. You get so many tropes done right it's astonishing and too effing long to list them all here.
On top of that, there is the picturesque landscape, absolutely gorgeous ships and very accurate portrayal of how life looked back then.
We had to defend that show when it first came out, the actors had to fucking fight homophobic assholes upon the airing of season two (IMAGINE THAT), people who loved it had a hard time going around, although admittedly it's a "fandom" hard time, not a "real life" hard time. We persisted, we persevered, and now we're here, clinging to what's left of our fandom, because we are admittedly all over the place and we don't have "troops" on any one social media, which makes our numbers small in comparison to other fandoms, and makes fandom interactions very limited.
Now imagine that there aired a show... a pirate show promising a lot. And then the show turned out to be an office-type comedy with no lesbian/bi women representation (I may be wrong, but I did watch it out of curiosity, didn't see any, just guys). A show that the whole plot of is just a rendition of the Beauty and the Beast for pirate times with so many historical inaccuracies (couching your crew like a bunch of office workers? Plz. The way they speak and the concepts they talk of that weren't there? It's like they were sitting around a fire, holding hands and singing kumbaya). And don't get me wrong, there's place for those shows as well, and maybe it works for you (and great for you too!).
We tried to ignore it, really we did. We basically gave it the eyebrow-raise-huff-ignore thing that you do on the internet when you want someone to enjoy their stuff and are not interested in it yourself.
But you know what happened? Suddenly there were people on twitter tagging everyone and their dog from Black Sails with renditions of Flint/Izzy (Izzy who comes across as an extreme asshole at best and a homophobic shit at worst and you can't fault people for reading it like this). Let that sink in - our fandom babe Flint, who had his whole life ruined due to homophobia and homophobic assholes is suddenly being shipped with a guy who suspiciously fits the description a bit too much for our tastes. Wouldn't you get angry? Of course you would, we're all very protective of our babes. We are, you are, everyone is. We asked you not to do this, and while I admit that hurling curses your way might not have been the most polite way of asking you to stop, the message was clear enough. What does OFMD fandom do? They all double down. Double fucking down on fanfiction and tagging everything in BS again, pairing Flint and Izzy together, writing things way out of the realm of any possibilities because most of the writers didn't watch BS (I did read their comments on that. They weren't even sorry). If you take such character and throw him into a work of art that can and will be seen as controversial, you should at least have the decency to do your homework on the original work he comes from. Otherwise, to our eyes, you're taking the most wronged man from our beloved show, wronged due to his sexuality, and throw him together with a literal asshole just to see them fuck because they would look pretty (and that's an actual comment from one of the artists, I shit you not). Wouldn't you feel a bit angry about that? I bet you would.
What's worse, people loving Black Sails and not liking OFMD usually point out how narrow the representation is, how improbable the show is and how they're not remotely invested in the plot. It's a cheesy show for your average Sunday afternoon, don't make it into something it's not. It's not a political statement any more than Guess The Tune is.
What's more, when I've seen attempts at people pointing out the obvious flaws in plot, in logic (how many people crew that ship exactly? How is he not dead after being stabbed clean through with a sword?), all we've gotten was "Oh it's not that type of show, OBVIOUSLY", "it's just a comedy, duh" and my personal favorite "you just DON'T UNDERSTAND IT BOOMER". (I'm a late Millennial, thx). Every attempt was chucked out the window. What got me most, tho, was the high praise of OFMD IS THE FIRST SHOW TO [insert whatever queer thing it did supposedly]. No, it's not. There was even a post on twitter that debunked all those claims one by one. I get it, you're happy that you got your gay pirates, good for you. But give credit where credit's due, otherwise you're gonna piss off a lot of people. People who watched our show struggle and crawl so that your show can run today and be fine and accepted widely.
And personally, I felt disappointed watching it because of the lack of representation. Disappointed that Ed turned out to be just as rainbowy as Stede. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against rainbowy, ultra-sweet characters that are big softies. I love them. But not everyone in the lgbtq community is like that. Actually, it's the minority. There are your sweets, there are your glittery rainbows, but the majority is on the more... inconspicuous part of the scale. And there are edgy people (like myself) who don't like glitter, pink, feathers, fluff and a shitton of other things this show had in abundance. You know what made me wince while watching? When I realized that the only person who I could remotely like for the way they weren't so glittery-rainbowy-sweet was Izzy, and I hated him because he was an asshole. Even Jim got the fluffy af oranges arch. So not my (and others') cup of tea.
So yeah, our recent anger and rabidity is not based solely on one post about an insignificant poll (that you're winning only because our fandom is significantly smaller and most people are dispersed between different sites). It's all those things combined and it's the result of them.
And no, I'm not going to finish it with a "please forgive us if we seem a bit angery, we're coping". Flint wouldn't.
