"How come there's no multi-war chess?"
Tim looked up at the entity that had been haunting him for the past few weeks now, "What does that even mean?"
"You know how chess is basically a game about two kingdoms going to war with eachother?" The being asked, his white gloves gesturing about lazily, "well wouldn't it make sense for chess competitions to make the players go into the next round with only the pieces that "survived" the last war? It would be more interesting."
Danny smirked as he watched Mr. Drakes mind whirring at all the new strategies and potential. Comforted in the knowledge that Mr. Drake wasn't going to get much paperwork done tonight, let alone have time to work on his project for the competition, Danny let himself vanish from the other boys office.
All he needed to do was keep distracting Tim from the competition and that prize was all Tuckers.
He just prayed Sam didn't find out he was doing this or that he was getting chased around by bats every other night or else she'd kill him the rest of the way

Danny Phantom Fanfic Masterlist
I've been meaning to do this for a bit! Since I've been in the Phandom for 10+ years I've picked up a lot of good fanfics over the years and I think it'd be great to share them again in case people have forgotten/haven't encountered them!
I mostly used Fanfiction.net in my older days so a lot of them will be linked there. I'm also pretty picky when it comes to fics being completed, so expect the ones listed to be bingeable with an ending! And finally, I'm not huge on romance/smut so most of them probably won't involve those genres, I'll point out ones that do. (These are in no particular order).
👻 Happy Reading! 👻
👻 = Regular Fic
🟢 = Alternate Universe Fic
⚔️ = Crossover Fic
💙 = Would Recommend!
💙💙 = One of my Favorites!
💙⚔️💙 Mirrored by Lynse
"As a general rule, diving into unknown swirly vortexes in the Ghost Zone is a bad idea, but this was a time when Danny had no other real choice. Meanwhile, Jake thought he was through dealing with ghosts, but Rotwood, well, he's just getting started."
I posted about this one a few years ago and the author, @ladylynse , said it's also available on AO3. This is by far one of my f a v o r i t e fanfics that I read annually or so! If you're a sucker for American Dragon too, definitely check this one out <3 The characterization of both Jake and Danny, plus watching their friendship grow, always gets me in the feels.
💙👻 Phantom's Sketchbook by AkoyaMizuno
"Mr. Lancer finds himself in an unparalleled situation, he has access to something which can give him incredible insight into the personal workings of Amity Park's local ghost teen hero, Danny Phantom."
It's been a while since I've read this one, but I remember it having a lovely characterization of Lancer plus his mentor relationship with Danny. (I loved this one a great amount back in the day that I, uh, made fanart and turned it in for a school assignment. Which is lost to the ages now 😅)
👻 Darkness by Cordria
"Maddie and Phantom are trapped in the dark. Can they come to an agreement to work together before they both die at the full moon? Part 1 of Illuminations Saga."
I don't quite remember this one but I DO remember Cordria had some absolute bangers. You'll probably see their name a few more times on this list.
💙👻💙 Masks by Cordria
"Sometimes, people hide who they truly are behind masks. This is a short story about the day that Lancer decides enough is enough when it comes to Daniel Fenton. Sequel is 'Plunge'"
When I said Cordria had bangers, THIS is one of them! Another fic that I read annually, this one involves Lancer getting closer and closer to Danny's secret while he's stuck in detention for the weekend. I love love LOVE the characterization of Danny and Lancer in this, another at the top of the favorite list!
👻 Plunge by Cordria (sequel to Masks ^)
"Sequel to 'Masks'. Now that Lancer has learned the truth and has let Danny out of his office, Danny needs to face the next hurdle: his parents."
For some reason, I always forgot to put this on my favorite list so I often missed out on reading it with my annual read of Masks. I remember it being a decent sequel where the Fentons pick up the pieces of Danny's reveal.
👻 Pits by Cordria
"Danny has been captured and thrown into the Pits by Walker to fight for his life. Listen in as he tells his dark, twisted tale of surviving despite the odds. Warning: dark and depressing. Sequel is 'Final Exam'."
Another one I don't fully remember, but it had to be a solid read since it's on my favorites haha! I have a vague sense that it was a little angst/gore-y(?) as the description warns, so just heads up!
👻 Lab Rat by AnneriaWings
"The look on my parents' faces – eager, curious, somewhat hateful – wasn't exactly hard to give away their intentions. I knew what they were going to do to me even before Mom snapped on a pair of rubbery, white latex gloves."
*** This one is definitely a vivisection fanfic with graphic descriptions, so beware that content. Again, haven't read it in a long time but it had satisfied my angst itch back in the day.
👻 Wondering by Phantomrose96
"A continuation to Cordria's starshot #69 "Wondering". Danny's been captured and tortured by his parents, but he refuses to say a word until his psychiatrist starts connecting the dots. Can he risk keeping it a secret any longer?"
*** Another angst, lab experiment-esque fic. There are definite graphic scenes (as warned in the first chapter). I do remember this fic being huge in the 2010s (definitely a staple of the Phandom). The relationships and Danny recovering from his torture were great highlights.
👻 Connections by Lynse
"Maddie knows that the Booo-merang has keyed into Danny, for whatever reason, so what's she to think when she sees it collide with Phantom?"
Don't quite remember this one, but Lynse is amazing at writing, so it's bound to be a good read.
👻 Confessions by Lynse (Sequel to Connections ^)
"Follows Connections. Danny's secret's not as safe as he thinks, what with Maddie unable to ignore her wild suspicions any longer and piecing things together and Jack asking questions all on his own."
Same as above!
💙👻 Earthquake by Turkeyhead987
"Danny leaves with his bathroom excuse and leaves Dash curious. He follows Danny and ends up the the gym room with him. While they're in there, an earthquake occurs and leaves them trapped inside. Will any secrets be revealed? No DashxDanny! They're just the main characters!"
This one is another one that I've read multiple times over the years! From what I remember, it was a fun read involving Dash and Danny being trapped in the gym after an earthquake, and explores how Danny handles his secret around Dash while they wait for rescue.
💙👻 A Jock and a Hard Place by AnneriaWings
"Danny and Dash were silent, trying to wrap their mind around that stupid, simple fact – the door was locked. They were trapped. In a janitor's closet. Together. (Collab with Haiju)"
No romance in this one! Another story where Danny and Dash get trapped together. I've read this one several times, and remember enjoying the tension of Danny's secret being revealed. I also think they explored Danny and Dash's relationship in a fun way!
👻 An Unlikely Alliance by Represent
"Maddie wants her family back. In an attempt to understand her Danny's change in behavior, she unwittingly enlists the GIW to exorcize Phantom from her son."
Gonna be real with ya'll, I don't remember this one at all. But uhhh I'm gonna throw it on here just because I can. :)
👻 Flip Turn by dreamsweetmydear
"Danny's life the last couple of years has been chaotic and pretty scary, to say the least. However, one detention with Mr. Lancer opens a window of opportunity that promises to turn his life around in more ways than one. Revelation fic. Post-"Kindred Spirits.""
Yet again, I don't remember this fic. Sorry! But it's under 8000 words, so it's a little bit of a shorter read than some of the ones on this list!
👻 Journey of Secrets by WolfKael
"First Danny Phantom fic! DXS, TXV, but not super-heavy. Lancer's class is on a trip to the Ghost Zone, courtesy of the Fentons! (Takes a couple chapters to gain momentum, and I promise it isn't your average 'field trip' fic!) T because I'm paranoid, but it could probably be K ."
Also not a fic I remember. It's got about 50,000 words so thought I'd throw it in for anyone that likes a longer fic!
👻 Vulnerable by HaiJu
"A desperate moment leads to a difficult choice, and Danny must deal with the consequences. A collaboration between Anneriawings and Haiju."
Don't remember it, but HaiJu had/has some great fics! Seems to involve Danny and Maddie after skimming the first chapter.
👻 Little Fires by Represent
"My family's supposed to be geniuses, yet they've never figured it out. Now I know why. Because they already know I'm Phantom. They must know. The better questions are: Have they known this whole time? What's in that vial? What happened to Skulker? And what's in the locked drawer?"
You know what, if I remember it, I'll say something 😂
👻 Judge, Jury, Executioner by Cordria
"The Observants and the Ghost Council are sick of the Fentons creating half-ghost creatures that disobey the rules of the universe. It's time for them to step in before more are made. Can Danny save his parents and keep his secret intact? A three-part fic."
💙👻 A Phantom Marooned by LordPugsy
"No one but Danny was suspicious when his English class was awarded an all-expenses paid cruise trip by an anonymous benefactor. Everyone but Danny thought it was bad luck when they became ship-wrecked on an island in the middle of nowhere. No one but Danny fully understood the dangers lurking in the trees. No one but Danny knew how much danger they were all in so far from home."
This one involves Danny and his class getting out of Amity Park, so it's a little more oc-filled and explores a nontraditional setting for the trio. There might be a little SamxDanny in this one if I remember correctly, but overall I do remember having fun reading through this!
🟢 Candlelight by HappyLeif
"Sam's only friend is the ever-loyal Tucker, ever since Danny began slowly distancing himself from them after some accident freshman year. She wanted a friend, but she never thought she'd find the one she was looking for in the highly debated ghostly hero of Amity Park.
AU = Danny alone during the portal accident. Looks like there's some SamxDanny in this one! Don't remember it but heck I might have to reread it since the synopsis has me interested.
👻 Crashing and Burning by GriffinRose
"For two years, Maddie has put up with Danny's ridiculous lies and excuses. She's tried everything to get through to him, but the pattern just goes on. She's so tired of fighting him on this all the time. And so, after two years, she's done. She doesn't care what her son does anymore, because Danny doesn't seem to care that he's her son."
👻 I'll Be Here by HaiJu
"Some days you can't pick yourself up. Having family means you don't have to. Danny-centric, three oneshots. Completely shameless hurt/comfort. Bring tissues… and antiseptic."
👻 What Little Girls Are Made Of by HaiJu
"Phantom and his younger double save Amity Park from a monstrous ghost, nearly destroying themselves in the process. The Fentons have always hunted ghosts; now it's time to save one."
💙👻💙 You Should Be Dead by SaphireDragon11
"Dash and Kwan are horrified to discover they've accidentally killed their classmate, but perhaps even more so when he shows up at school the next day. With his secret on the line, Danny soon discovers Dash and Kwan are the least of his worries."
THIS story is definitely a favorite and fun read! The ending battle chapters always gets me excited to reread! ***Danny does get straight up shot by Dash at the beginning so be warned for that content. But I remember a post going around a year or so ago where someone had drabbled about Danny getting up after being shot by Dash. This story explores that concept with a longer plot!
💙👻💙 Roughing It by HaiJu
"Lost deep in the woods with an undead pack on their heels, Maddie and Phantom find themselves entangled in an awkward alliance. Can they cooperate long enough to get out of this mess?"
Another favorite! This one explores Maddie and Danny's relationship, kind of similar to how the show did in the Maternal Instincts episode. I adore how HaiJu explores Maddie's thought-process with dealing with Phantom in a situation where she kind of needs him and he won't leave her alone. Great mother-son fic!
👻 Phantom of Truth by Haiju
"Locked away in a secret government lab with Phantom as her subject, nothing stands between Maddie and the truth... except, perhaps, herself."
Haven't read this one in a loooooong time, but I remember being around for HaiJu updating this fic, posting about it on Tumblr, and the Phandom being generally hyped for it. Another staple for the Phandom! It's another torture fic, so heads up regarding that content!
💙👻 Shadow of a Doubt by Haiju (Sequel to Phantom of Truth ^)
"The truth was supposed to save Danny. Fix things. The lab, the experiments, the lies, those were all in the past. Weren't they? Sequel to Phantom of Truth."
And then BAM on top of finishing Phantom of Truth, HaiJu hit us all with a completed sequel! I was super excited whenever this fic got updated, felt like I was waiting for a new episode to air on TV every time! There's some OCs in this since it explores Danny running away from Amity, but I remember genuinely loving the OCs and loved reading about Danny mentally recovering from being experiment on.
👻 Just a Boy by Tay1019411
"Maddie and Jack finally have Phantom right where they always wanted him: in there lab, helpless, but everything is different now. Now, Maddie faces the truth about what Phantom really is."
🟢 Make It Go Away by DarkNymfa
"Not for the first time, Danny cursed himself for never telling anyone about his extra-curricular activities. And now, far more injured than he could fix himself, Danny desperately wished that he had told just one person."
No one knows AU
👻 Flicker by DarkNymfa
"It had taken just one moment, one split-second in which she had seen Phantom instead of Danny. Now she found herself on a path she didn't want to be on. One she couldn't leave, not anymore."
👻 The Scientific Method by ReconstructWriter
""After two years of failures you'd have better luck asking Phantom to be your lab-rat," Jazz said. The Fentons decide to try just that."
👻 Phantom Hitchhiker by ghostanimal
"Phic Phight Oneshot: While students get to leave early after a ghost attack, teachers have to stick around for boring meetings to discuss the attack. The ghost attack was now over, but it didn't mean all the ghosts were gone. Lancer finds himself driving a certain Phantom home while reflecting on how young the poor kid is."
👻 Returning After the Reveal by Illusn
"Phic Phight attack, using a prompt by Love-ly-ish. Danny returns to school after his secret was revealed in a ghost attack, having to deal with people suddenly treating him differently."
👻 Vantage Point by Lynse
"Phantom was young. Painfully young. Somehow, Lancer had never really noticed that before. One-shot, written for the 2019 Phic Phight."
👻 Oddities by Lynse
"Jack can't deny that their ghost hunting equipment malfunctions around Danny-consistently and exclusively around Danny-and decides to get to the bottom of it, once and for all. One-shot, written for the 2019 Phic Phight."
👻 To Be a Hero by cosette141
"Danny has always known the consequences should he be captured by the Guys In White, but now Tucker is going to learn firsthand just what the stakes are for his superhero friend and what it really means to be a hero. (not slash) hurt/comfort"
👻 Family Reunion by Dp-Marvel94
"For Phango. Prompts used- Setting: Family Reunion, Wes Weston, Aunt Alicia, Stuck in the thermos. And Identity Reveal…kinda (does it count if Wes had already worked out that Fenton was Phantom but hadn't seen him actually transform so wasn't completely sure?)"
Wes Fic!
👻 Stuck by SummersSixEcho
"[OneShot] After a prank from two of his ghostly acquaintances, Danny is stuck in ghost mode during one of the most important events of his young half-life. If only he didn't have to give a speech on top of it... [Phic Phight 2020 entry; prompt by Ghostanimal]"
👻 One-Eighty by SummersSixEcho
"[One Shot] After a grueling battle, two teenagers at a diner try to sort out a night of revelations. [DannyMay 2020, Day 28: Diner]"
👻 Threads of Time by ZombieRed
""I just want to know what's going on with you, Danny! I wish I could just, I don't know, spend the day figuring out what you've been hiding from me. Then maybe I could help you. But you being closed off from everyone is only hurting you. Can't you see that?" Or Maddie keeps on waking up to Thursday morning [No PP, pretty much ignores season 3 as a whole]"
👻 Invisible Stitches by Lynse
"Family bonding time might be less dangerous now that his parents know his secret, but that doesn't mean Danny is wild about being kept in the dark when it comes to his dad's plans for the weekend. One-shot."
Loved the concept of Danny having trouble being away from Amity Park!
👻 Whenever You're Ready by SummersSixEcho
"[OneShot] Jack and Maddie try to show their son they are very supportive of Phantom once they find out his secret. They want him to tell them on his terms, but everything ends up in bigger misunderstandings and more revelations they weren't prepared for. [Belated Phic Phight entry for Star G, Arioz, Bird, Dekalkomania, and Wife]"
Written in a Journal-Entry style! Interesting format if I remember correctly.
👻 An Attempt at Camping by Seasilver17
"They should have known that even when they were in the middle of nowhere camping. Something would have to go wrong. Curse his Fenton luck"
👻 Secrets Secrets and Advice (This Teacher's Vice) by AppleScentedLazers
"After a particularly grueling day Mr. Lancer just wants to go home, kick up his feet, and read some Shakespeare. But, when he runs into two of his students looking for their missing best friend, Lancer ends up with more questions than he has answers for. Such as, who is Phantom? And just what is Daniel Fenton hiding?"
👻🟢 Going Ghost by cosette141
"My take on the moment Danny turns on the ghost portal and becomes half-ghost… as well as an alternate way for Sam and Tucker to find out. Friendship Oneshot"
👻 Lair by Lexosaurus
"When something goes wrong with a piece of Vladco tech, Valerie ends up stuck in the Ghost Zone. With Phantom."
💙👻 In Case of Emergency by Unlucky Alis
"Lancer is grading papers when he gets the call. "I'm calling from Amity West. I have an underage patient here who has named you as their emergency contact." Lancer rushes over, of course, fretting all the while about what accident Danny Fenton has gotten himself into now, because it could only be him. Except, when he arrives, it's not the Danny he expected to find."
I remember enjoying the little twist on Lancer being the emergency contact for Phantom yet having no idea. Lancer handles it pretty well all things considered. (I think you guys can tell I just like Lancer fics at this point HA)
👻 Furthest from Myself by WastefulReverie
"An accident during a ghost invasion leaves nearly a hundred citizens with inexplicable ghost powers. Little did they know, this was only the catalyst for a series of revelations."
👻 Ghost Smarts! by Dekalkomania
"When it becomes clear the ghosts are here to stay, the Amity Park school district decides they need to teach proper safety precautions. In dire need of extra credit, Danny takes Mr. Lancer's offer to be the assistant in an assembly titled, "Ghost Smarts!"
Very unprepared for what he signed up for, Danny must deal with the eccentric detective J.J. Bittenbinder, all while not blowing his cover."

Mythic Phantom
This is a little something I whipped up over a while thinking about merging the DP and Riordanverse universes together, and I thank @geraldmariaivo for helping me think my way through it. If you want the ao3 version you can find it here, and I hope you enjoy the fic!
Most Underworld Gods felt it when Vlad’s current permanent Portal opened, but they all Felt it when Danny’s accident happened. A child’s death throes is hard to ignore after all. Pantheons world wide decided that was America’s problem, and Hel decided it was Persephone’s problem, and Haides felt it would close on its own. No gate to Khaos can stay open for long after all.
When Ember went globally live, Muses and Music Gods and Hypnos heard the way she sang, called out to the mortals to never be forgotten. Danny and Tucker dealt with her swiftly enough that she was remembered, noted even, but disregarded.
When the Fright Knight’s sword was drawn, many Fear Gods turned toward Amity, but Danny dealt with it swiftly. Most regarded it as an anomaly but Phobos and Deimos sent subordinate spirits to investigate the town and report anything interesting.
Hades and Persephone noted the invasion of Ghost Cops and saw that Danny had it handled in only a few days, which they would count as a quest fulfilled. Clearly, Amity Park was a contained issue, and the Master Bolt had gone missing by now so they have other things to deal with. The House of Life have some reservations but agree.
Then Pariah Dark got out, and the Gods scrambled to do something about that. In only a week however, He was dealt with too.  A closer eye was warranted. By everyone, not just the Observants.
Whoever these agents were, be they half-bloods or spirits or even minor gods, most wouldn’t see Young Blood and thus would fear Danny was losing it too. When he calmed down, they’d sigh in relief. The two future Ghost Villains who show up outside of the do-over would raise alarms at how fast ghosts can progress, but hey, it’s handled.
When the Hellenic spies are pulled back home for safety during the winter solstice, pleasantly surprised by Ghost activity dying down at the same time, Artemis and Luna, Khonshu and more felt something wrong happening as the Ghostwriter possessed the moon to speak.
When Duul Amon returned to the land of the living, the House of Life sent agents to the town, and Tucker Foley was immediately offered magic lessons. His is power over stone and steel, glass and gems, as well as an ear for the voices of machines. Between terrakinesis and technopathy, Tucker’s limits with his staff became only what he understood about technology.
Then entire copies of the Ghost Boy (Prince? King?) appear, attacking him, manipulating him for the elder, but he lets her go free after he’s rescued? Truly fascinating. Psychopomps keep an eye on Elle wherever she goes - she’s always very close to melting after all. The titan army also keep an eye on her, a powerful being both like and unlike the Gods, much the same as a Titan, Giant, or Monster.
Then the Reality Gauntlet is found by a mortal man, a rogue Magician, while the boy is busy trying to stop it and save the world, Lydia is keeping House of Life magicians and even Odin’s Ravens from finding Freakshow, so some Camp Jupiter heroes are being sent on a quest to deal with him. Then he gets the fucking gems and turns the world into a circus for 10 minutes.
Before the Boy tricks him, takes the Gauntlet, resets the world to before his identity was revealed to the world, (though perhaps not quite fooling the memories of Gods, who Are the world) and destroying the Gauntlet and gems in a single blast.
An artifact presumed by the Ghost Investigation Ward to be powerful enough to destroy the Infinite Realms, reduced to molten ash by one burst of power.
What to do about the young Phantom is a matter of discussion during the solstice meeting on Olympus.  Hades is sent to investigate the boy and finds that he is a godling of Kaos Themself, which sparks yet further debate on what to do when Artemis goes missing.
But then the Son of Hades stumbled upon Elmerton and witnessed a duel between Gods firsthand.
Danny Phantom faced off against Vortex, the ghost of all weather and sky and storm gods who had faded over the millennia, all on his own.  Even in defeat, Danny stole half of Vortex’s power, and less than a week later, he defeated the calamity that even two pantheons worth of gods could not.
The Titans would be horrible for humanity as a whole, and the Olympians were bad for half bloods as well.  Danny Phantom, however, could be just what most half bloods were after.  He needed training in mortal form, clearly, but that could be an angle for Nico to use.

Danny's Daycare Part 11
[Master List]
Dragging himself off the couch (where he’d actually gotten a few hours of sleep- how’s that for ‘not normal’ Red Hood?), Danny checked his phone. He had a missed call from an unknown number two texts, one from Damian one from Tim, and a reminder that Damian was coming over sometime after noon.
Tim: No worries, Danny. I hope everything’s all right?
Danny decided to respond to that later when he heard the bedroom door open and remembered he needed to get breakfast started. Hopping up, he moved to the kitchen, feeling lighter than he had in weeks, and started searching for food.
“‘Morning.” Santi murmured, taking a seat on the stools across the island from Danny. “Wha’s t’eat?”
He’d learned early on that the boys’ Gotham accent was even thicker after waking up and had to keep himself from cooing at how adorable it was. You’re not their dad, chill.
“Looks like….” Danny pulled out the container Red Hood had left the night before and read the little note he also included. Gallo Pinto, make some eggs and toast to go with it- there’s plenty so actually eat it, Danny. -Red Hood “Something called Gallo Pinto. I just have to make some eggs.” He ignored the pointed remark about eating the food and he definitely ignored the part about toast.
Santi sighed and placed his head against the counter.
“You okay, kid?”
The boy nodded. “‘M tired. Miguel’sa bed hog.”
Danny laughed. “Looks like you and I have something in common.” Santi looked up, questioningly. “Older siblings who hog the bed. I bet he steals the covers too, huh?” When the boy nodded Danny chuckled again. “Yeahhh…. They always use the ‘I’m bigger’ arguement too.”
“‘F I had a younger siblin’ I’d do it to ‘em too.” Santi sighed. “Did you do it ta Dani?”
“No I… I never had the opportunity.”
Santi tilted his head. “How come?”
He hadn’t told the boys much about himself, though he never held back information it usually just didn’t come up. He wondered though… if they outright asked him about certain things, Phantom, ghosts, Jack and Maddie, would he tell them? “We didn’t grow up together really.”
“But she’s yer sister.”
“Yes, well… I… didn’t meet her until I was fifteen and she was twelve and even after that we didn’t spend much time together. She spent her teenage years traveling and I- well I didn’t.” He let out a puff of air, Santiago was clearly very interested in this topic so he continued. “Dani’s a free spirit, she’s always come and gone as she pleased and well… I couldn’t be happier that shes’s decided to stay here for a little while. Don’t tell her but I kind of missed her.” He stage whispered the last sentence as if she would overhear him.
Speak of the devil and she shall appear. His door opened and closed without so much as a knock and then a very familiar face walked around the corner. “What’s to eat? I'm starving!” She exclaimed obnoxiously.
~~~
“So this friend of yours…” Miguel trailed off, Danny waited in silence for him to finish his sentence. “So your friend….” Danny nodded. “You have friends?”
Dani cackled while Danny huffed, exasperated. “Of course I have friends!” Miguel and Santiago shared doubting looks. “Listen, I just don’t have a lot of time to hang out with people. But there’s Sam and Tucker, we’ve been friends forever, and then Valerie joined the group- oh and Wes is definitely a friend too. We became friends towards the end of high school though so we don’t keep up as much. But yeah, I have friends.”
“Dude.” Santiago breathed. “That’s like… four people.”
“I’m pretty sure every friend is canceled out by an enemy so you’re at net 0 brother.” Dani laughed. “The negatives even.”
Miguel frowned. “You have enemies?”
Danny’s rebuttal was cut off by the knocking at their door- saved by the bell, well, sort of. Metaphorically. Damian was on the other side of the door, wearing slacks and a nice sweater (why was the kid always so dressed up?) and had a bag in one hand weighed down by (theoretically) cat stuff.
“Hi Damian!” Danny greeted. “Come on in!” He’d noticed throughout the time he’d known Damian that the boy was rather proper. He was always dressed nicely, always spoke politely, his posture was perfect, and he had an air about himself… like he knew his importance. He supposed it was good that the kid had that much confidence- maybe it would rub off on Miguel a bit.
Leading Damian to the dining room (which was really just a table in the kitchen), Danny started introduction. “I know you guys met briefly at the store-”
“You’re that guy whose brother goes by dick!” Santiago laughed.
Damian quirked an eyebrow. “Yes, Richard insists on going by it which I think is absurd.”
Santiago quirked his head. “Why you talk like that, man?”
“OKAY!” Danny clapped his hands together. “Let’s not be rude to my friend who is here to do us a favor and teach you boys about owning a cat, capeesh?” The boys nodded, Santiago sheepishly, and Damian untensed slightly. “Miguel, Santi, why don’t you show Damian your apartment and he can answer any of your questions.”
The boys nodded and Damian followed them without a word. The second they were out of earshot Dani gave him a Look.
“What?” Danny asked defensively.
“Oh my Ancients.” She breathed, her eyes widened as if she’d just realized something.
Danny looked between where Damian had disappeared and his freaking-out sister. “What?”
“Nothing. You’re a dumbass.” She stood up and stretched. “This has been fun but I’ve got some things to see to, people to visit, you know…” She trailed off.
Pursing his lips, Danny tried not to ask. He’d suspected for a while that she was hiding something from him, but he didn’t know what or why. And he didn’t want to know. She was free to keep things to herself, he didn’t need to know everything she was doing at all times. “Okay- don’t forget, tutoring with Jason starts a week from tomorrow and you might learn a thing or two from him.”
“Pffff.” She waved a hand at him dismissively. “I’m already great at English!”
He deadpanned her. “You remember who you’re made from, right?”
~~~
“Do either of you have any questions?” Damian asked, looking between the two boys who’d been listening to his instructions without interruption for the past thirty minutes. When he’d met them- or, re-met them, he’d thought they would be incapable of listening to his expertise without butting in constantly, but he’d been wrong.
Miguel and Santiago shared looks, the older one was the first to speak up. “I don’t think so. Guess we can always ask Danny if we think of anythin’ later on.” He shrugged.
Knowing that Danny was not only new to owning cats but also incredibly busy, Damian hesitantly offered his own number. “If you ever have questions that Nightingale cannot answer or is not around to answer… you may… call or text me.”
“Oh shit man, really?” Santiago blurted out.
Miguel smacked him upside the head but it seemed to be more of a brotherly affection than anything else. “Manners, man.”
“Right, uh. Sorry.” Santiago offered. “Just excited I guess, we never got a pet before.”
Damian knew the feeling. When father had first agreed to letting him get a cat he’d been ecstatic. One cat, dog, and cow later and Damian was still excited any time he rescued a new animal or was able to get another one himself. “That is understandable, I too was excited to get my first pet.” Checking his watch, he stood. He still had homework to do before patrol tonight. “I should be going, but let me know how things are going once you’ve gotten all of the necessary supplies and have fallen into a routine.”
After saying goodbye to Danny and heading out Damian couldn’t help but hope the boys would text him. He pushed the sentiment away quickly. They either would or would not message him and it did not matter either way.
~~~
  “So Danny’s like- not human, right?” And wasn’t that a crazy way to start a conversation?
“Hi Santi, what happened to hi? Hello? How are you? My name is?” Miguel joked back, not taking his eyes off the textbook in front of him.
His younger brother groaned. “Come ooooon! There’s somethin’ weird ‘bout him! He’s gotta be a meta, right?”
Spinning his pencil, Miguel responded absentmindedly. “What makes you say that?”
“‘Member when he was having a long day last week and accidentally ripped the handle off the fridge ‘cause it wouldn’t open? Or how ‘bout when I left some stuff here the other day and came ta get it while he was at work an’ he was also here? And at dinner that night I asked ‘im how work was and he said it was good?”
Miguel hummed. “Maybe he took that day off and didn’t want us to think he was bein’ a helicopter parent.”
“AH HA!” Santiago shouted, jumping to his feet and pointing. “You called him a parent!”
The older boy groaned. “Santi- I didn’t mean- look, he’s like five years older than me! At most he’s like an older brother and even then-”
“Tell me again how ‘e chased down your kidnappers and kicked their asses? Or how safe you felt when he moved you out of the way of danger? Or how he checked on us a buncha times at night and got you anythin’ you asked for?”
Miguel groaned, completely forgetting about the textbook as his brother listed off more times Danny was ‘meta like’ or ‘dad shaped’. It wasn’t untrue- but Miguel had said he didn’t want Danny to play parent and he meant it. He’d had parents, he knew how that song and dance went, and he wasn’t looking to suffering it again.
Danny was cool, he fed them, helped them with school stuff, took care of them, all the things a parent did, but he didn’t get on them about curfew, or eating their vegetables, or grades, or any of that bullshit parents got upset about. He was cool. And safe.
He didn’t remember a lot from his kidnapping- Danny said that was probably for the best- but he remembered a lot of loud noises at one point and how badly he wanted them to stop. And all at once they did. After that there was a voice, it was comforting, calming, and gentle hands that held him close. Danny had told him after the fact that he’d moved Miguel away from the danger and had Red Robin take him home.
Because apparently Danny wasn’t done. Miguel had no idea how many guys Danny took out, but any amount was too much. After the way Miguel had treated him, the way he’d yelled at Danny and got mad at him for just trying to help- Miguel didn’t deserve Danny’s help.
“Are you even listenin’?” Santiago asked, leaning close.
“So what if he ain’t human? Meta’s’re cool.” Miguel argued.
Santiago looked at him like he’d said something stupid. “Obviously. But Batman hates ‘em! What if he finds out ‘n kicks Danny outta Gotham!”
Anxiety clawed at Miguel’s insides but he pushed it down in favor of quelling his brothers’. “That aint’ gonna happen dumbass. Batman don’t care ‘bout Danny bein’ a upstandin’ citizen.”
“Hey guys,” Danny knocked on the door and leaned into Miguel’s room. “Dani wants to go out for a couple of hours this afternoon, go shopping, get food, stuff like that. You guys want to come?”
The boys looked at each other, knowing why Dani was trying to get him out of the apartment. “Nah, got work to do.” Miguel answered casually.
“Okay… Santi?”
Miguel froze.
“‘M good, gonna stay with Mick.” Santi answered, unperturbed.
Danny shrugged and left them to their work. When Miguel was sure he was gone he whipped around to Santiago. “You let him call you Santi? Since when?”
His brother bit his bottom lip nervously. “Uh… when… he called me that when I… when you were…”
Right. That made sense. High stress moments make people form bonds or whatever. Jazz said something about that the last time she’d swung by. She was never around for long, just enough to ask the boys about themselves and make sure Danny was eating and sleeping (he wasn’t). “Do you… want ‘im to call you that?”
Up until this point, Miguel had been the only person allowed to call him that nickname.
“I mean… I kind of… like it?” Santi mumbled. “He’s just so nice and he takes care of us and- and I- I… he’s okay- okay?”
Feeling a twinge of guilt and jealousy, Miguel shrugged. “You can let anyone call you whatever you want, Santi.” The two worked in silence for a moment before Miguel’s phone buzzed. “Dani says they’ll be gone for at least three hours ‘n that we can get to work now.”
“I still can’t believe he didn’t tell us ‘bout his birthday.” Santiago huffed as he stood up and followed his brother out of their apartment and to Danny’s.
Miguel shrugged. “He don’t know ours. Maybe he don’t like it?”
They could both understand that a bit. Birthdays were a touchy subject for them, maybe that was the case for Danny?
~~~
Danny was kind of oblivious a lot of the time, but that didn’t mean he didn’t know why his younger sister had dragged him out of his apartment for a multi-hour shopping trip on his birthday after very obviously not mentioning his birthday. He tried not to think too much about what the boys might have been dragged into back home while his sister buys anything she sees and likes.
To be fair, she really did need some stuff for her apartment, she’d furnished it almost immediately after moving in, but she lacked decorations. Dani was a maximalist, she liked displaying her knick knacks from her trips around the world, covering every piece of furniture in pillows and blankets, and making the place feel overall, homey. Something Danny wasn’t as good at.
(Where the hell did she get that from? It certainly wasn’t him. His and the boy’s apartments were  true testament to his lack of decorating skills and although he’d offered the boys many times to take them shopping for decorations and whatnot it seemed they felt similarly about the subject.)
“Danny come on!” Dani sighed dramatically. “You’ve been dragging your feet all dayyyy!”
With a scoff, Danny picked up the pace. Luckily they’d already been shopping for a few hours and she had promised this was the last store. He froze when he saw the store. “I am not going in there with you.”
She rolled her eyes. “Don’t be such a boy. It’s just bras.”
“It’s not the bras- it’s shopping for bras for my sister. Not happening.” He was putting his foot down on this one. Dani shrugged and disappeared into the store for way longer than he’d expected. Finding a nearby bench to sit down on, Danny pulled out his phone.
Tim: Astronomy, huh?
Danny: Yeah its like the only thing Im good at
Danny: After science that is
Tim: And running a daycare apparently
Danny: In my defense I didnt know Id be good at that until I did it
Tim: You’re telling me you just kind of…. Did it?
Tim: No thoughts?
Danny: Something like that
Tim: Dude. What the fuck
Danny: Okay, your turn. Hobbies?
The two had been talking on and off for the last week since Danny had reached out but they were both incredibly busy and often only sent a couple of texts a day. Dani’s impromptu shopping trip gave him a good excuse.
Tim: Skateboarding and photography
Danny: Thats so cool! I remember you said you were going skateboarding with your boyfriend?
Tim: Yeah one of them
One of them? Danny looked up for a moment, his brain rebooting to understand- what the fuck? He couldn’t even get one partner and Tim had two?! How was that fair? Shaking his head, Danny responded.
Danny: Thats cool, does the other one not skateboard?
Tim didn’t respond quickly enough before Dani came rushing out of the store with a large pink bag and a big smile. Danny put his phone away and picked up the myriad of of bags he’d been tasked with carrying throughout their shopping spree.
“Is that everything?” He asked, trying to keep the whine out of his voice.
She rolled her eyes, carrying only the bag from the last shop they’d been to. “Yes, Danny. We can go home now Ancients, you’re so impatient!”
“I don’t know where you got your love of shopping from but it was not me!” He was just grateful they could fly home invisible and intangible and it wouldn’t take long although it would take a bit longer than if he weren’t weighed down by a dozen shopping bags.
They got to the apartment building a few minutes later, stopping in Dani’s apartment first to drop off the bags- he hadn’t bought anything after all.
Dani set everything down then gave her brother a thoughtful look. “I wanna say hi to the boys.”
“O…kay?” Since when did she need his permission to say hi to the boys? Before he could ask she’d grabbed his hand and dragged him from her apartment to his. She made a lot of noise trying to open the door instead of phasing through which was strange but Danny was tired.
As the door opened he noted that the lights were all off- maybe the boys were in their apartment? Now that he was thinking about it- hadn’t they been at their place when he and Dani had left earlier? Why did she assume they’d bein his-
“SURPRISE!” The lights flickered on as a chorus of voices shouted at him.
Startling slightly, Danny gained his bearings. Standing in his living room were the boys, Sam, Tucker, Jazz, Valerie, and Wes, all wearing party hats and smiling widely at him. He hadn’t spent his birthday with anyone in a few years so he hadn’t expected anything like this. He probably should have.
“Happy birthday, little brother!” Jazz exclaimed, pulling him into a tight hug.
“Dude! You should have seen the look on your face!” Tucker laughed, joining in the hug Jazz had started. Sam joined too and for a moment Danny felt completely at peace.
Someone shoved through the tangle of limbs and bodies. “Yeah yeah, happy birthday Nightingale.” Valerie scoffed.
“Man you didn’t tell us you had kids!” Wes shouted from the couch.
Danny made his way into the living room and collapsed into an armchair, exhausted from the shopping. “That’s because I don’t.” He thought he caught a frown flit across Miguel’s face but he pressed on. “But they’re good kids and I’m happy to talk about them. Is there food? I’m starving?” He hoped getting the focus off of the boys would help them feel a bit more comfortable.
He wasn’t exactly unhappy that everyone was visiting- he was incredibly grateful they’d taken the time to come all this way and spend his birthday with him but he was worried. The boys had been forced to socialize with people they didn’t know without anyone they knew there to act as a buffer. Sure they’d met Jazz a few times, but they were more comfortable around Dani than they were around her.
Miguel especially didn’t like when there was a lot of attention put on him.
“Of course there is! I brought a meat platter-” Tucker started.
“And I brought a veggie platter and vegan dip.” Sam cut in.
Valerie rolled her eyes. “I ordered pizzas- meat lovers and vegan.”
“I brought drinks!” Jazz offered.
Wes looked around. “Well shit- no one told me to bring anything! Besides I just got off a double shift at the Planet and drove her right after! I haven’t even showered in two days!”
“So that’s what that smell is.” Danny smirked.
Overall, it was a success. The boys seemed to loosen up once everyone started eating and relaxing, Valerie played with the kittens (who were getting quite big at this point) while catching up with Jazz, and Wes was ranting about work.
“I mean- the guy “gets a few interviews with superman” and suddenly he’s like the go to guy! He’s literally superman! That isn’t investigative journalism! It’s an autobiography!” Wes shouts, finishing his rant by stuffing the rest of the pizza in his mouth.
Sam snorts. “Wes, come on, Clark Kent is not Superman.”
Wes gave her a Look. “This is high school all over again! I told everyone I knew who Phantom was- and I was right!” Danny gave him a pointed look before glancing at the boys. “I know who Superman is, I’m ninety-eight percent sure I know who each of the Gotham vigilantes are, I’ve got the Flashes figured out, and no one believes me!”
Miguel tilted his head. “Who’s Phantom?”
Now you’ve done it. Danny glares at his friend. “Small town hero from our hometown. No one’s seen him in years though so you couldn’t possibly know who he is.”
Looking between the curious teenager and the possibly enraged eldritch being that could tear him apart with the snap of his fingers, Wes chose life. “Yeah… you’re probably right.”
Tucker and Sam laughed as Wes slunk to the kitchen to get more food. “Don’t worry Wes! I’m sure the Planet will recognize your brilliance soon and you can score your own interview with Clark Kent- sorry- Superman.”
~~~
Turns out, Dani had only bought a bra so she could disguise her gift for Danny in a bag she knew he wouldn’t carry for her. He hadn’t expected gifts but upon opening them he couldn’t have been more grateful. Jazz’s gift had been a yearly pass to the planetarium and observatory in downtown Gotham. She mentioned that he was allowed to bring one free guest with him every visit.
Sam, Tucker, and Valerie had gotten him a bunch of new space themed clothes, blankets, and books- including a new book he’d been debating getting for a while.
Wes promised his gift was coming but ‘it was a bit sensitive and he’d understand when it arrived’. That only worried Danny a lot.
Dani had gotten him the newest model of the Celestron telescope. There was no way a store was just carrying one of those, she’d have to have ordered it specially. Turning it over he found his name engraved into it along with his favorite constellation. He almost cried.
(He did).
The cake was delicious, Miguel and Santiago ate more than Danny thought they should have (but he wasn’t their dad and wasn’t going to tell them to slow down) and ended up in a sugar coma for the rest of the evening. He moved them to his bed and closed the door so he and his friends wouldn’t wake them (What? He didn’t have to be their dad to take care of them like one).
“So Danny,” Wes started. He was on one side of the couch, his legs on top of Tucker and Sam’s laps who were leaning against each other. Jazz had taken his armchair from earlier with Dani sitting on the arm which left the spot next to Valerie on the loveseat. Ironic. “You didn’t tell us you had kids.” He repeated from earlier.
Sighing, Danny closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the headrest. “Like I said, they aren’t my kids. I didn’t just say that for their benefit or something.”
Everyone nodded slowly, giving each other looks, but Tucker spoke up. “Sure, but like… you house them, clothe them, feed them, tutor them, love them, protect them… That’s kind of like a dad, no?”
“Not my dad.” Danny shot back nonchalantly.
Jazz winced. “But like a dad should be.” She added quietly.
He thought about it for a moment. “I’m only five years older than Miguel-”
“Does that really matter?” Valerie snorted.
Shooting her a look, Danny started again. “I’m only five years older than Miguel and nine years older than Santi but if I could legally adopt them and call them mine, I would. It’s not like anything would change if I did, really. I wouldn’t suddenly be overbearing or whatever, but I promised Miguel when he agreed to let me help them that I would not try to parent them. So I’m not.
“I’m doing what I said I would. Clothing, feeding, housing them, that’s easy, loving and protecting them is something I was going to do whether or not they agreed to let me help. But I’m not going to call them my kids,” not out loud anyway. “I’m not going to… tell them they can’t have more cake than they should or give them a curfew or ground them or- I… I’m not going to parent them unless they outright ask for it.” He finished with a shrug.
The room was quiet for a moment.
“Who would’ve guessed C+ average Nightingale would be the first with a prominent career and kids?” Valerie joked, elbowing Danny in the ribs.
The room erupted in laughter as everyone started bringing up different ideas of where they thought he’d be at twenty-two (twenty-three now) and it was definitely not ‘Daycare owner in Gotham with two pseudo kids’.
Once everyone had calmed down, Danny asked the question he’d been afraid of asking all afternoon. “When do you guys head out?” It had been so nice seeing his friends again, he hadn’t realized how badly he’d missed them since moving to Gotham.
“Well- about that.” Sam chuckled. “I actually got a job under a prominent scientist I’ve been obsessed with since like- forever- so I’ll be moving to Gotham soon.”
“What? Sam that’s- that’s great!” Danny spluttered.
Tucker nodded. “Obviously I’m moving here too and I’ve got a job interview lined up with Wayne Industries.”
“You’re joking.”
His friends grinned, shaking their heads.
“You mean, you two are going to live in Gotham?” They nodded. “Jazz and Dani are already here, and Wes is just in Metropolis,” He turned to Valerie. “What do I have to do to get you out here?”
Raising an eyebrow, Valerie scoffed. “As if I’d move all the way to Gotham city New Jersey to be near you weirdos. I’m only friends with you because my life was boring before.”
“So you’re saying we’re exciting?” Dani chimed in.
“I’m saying there’s never a dull moment with you weirdos.”
Danny shrugged, leaning into Valerie much to her dismay. “Four out of six isn’t bad- plus Wes is within driving distance. But I’ll find a way to get you guys here. Just watch, I’ll climb the social ladder, own this city, and bribe you here with crazy good jobs.”
They all laughed. After all, that was a ridiculous notion.
Late Night Hangout
Hey y'all, this is my fic for Ecto Implosion!!
my artist partner for this is @i-havenothingelsetopost and y'all should definitely check out them and the art they made for this fic!! Art's linked in the scene it directly inspired :)
Anyway, here's the fic!
It was weird, seeing Tucker in a hospital bed. The flowers and ‘Get Well Soon!’ card tried to soften the harsh blow, but it really didn’t work.
Danny didn’t like that Tucker was in the hospital.
(He really didn’t like the fact that he hadn’t even been allowed to see him, the first day.)
It made something in his chest hurt.
The thought of Tucker being injured.
It had been stupid.
So stupid.
A second too late, and now his best friend-
His best friend.
Tucker.
-was hurt.
Danny should’ve been quicker, should’ve been-
“Hey.”
Danny shook his head, coming back to reality instead of being lost in his own thoughts.
Sam gave him a worried look from the other side of Tucker’s bed, as Tucker chewed on his lip.
“It wasn’t your fault, Danny.” Tucker said, always seeming to know what Danny was worried about.
It was though, it was.
It had just been a regular ghost attack, Johnny, Shadow, and Kitty causing problems on one of their ‘dates’. Danny had almost been having fun chasing them down, but-
But he hadn’t realized that Skulker was also causing havoc.
Hadn’t realized that Tucker had been dealing with him alone, Sam was with Danny-
Hadn’t realized that Skulker threw Tucker into a wall-
(Danny felt it, when Tucker got hurt.)
(Skulker hadn’t had a good time, after that.)
“Danny, snap out of it!” Tucker said, sounding annoyed.
He focused back onto Tucker, who had a frown on his face.
“How many times do I have to say it’s not your fault? I’m the one who tried to face Skulker without any backup or powers.”
There was a slight note of self-deprecation to Tucker’s voice, which Danny couldn’t let stand.
Neither could Sam, as it happened.
“It was stupid, but you could’ve beat him if you had some of your tech with you, Tucker.” Sam said, glaring lightly at one of her best friends.
Danny nodded in agreement, before adding “Besides, you know that you’re not a good match against Skulker! If it was Technus, you would’ve had him!”
Tucker leaned back against the pillow, giving a harsh sigh.
“Yeah, but I left everything except Janet at home, like an idiot. And now I’m in the hospital for the next three days, for ‘observation’.”
“C’mon Tuck, it won’t be that bad.” Danny said, trying to cheer him up.
Tucker rolled his eyes.
“It will. You know how much I hate hospitals.”
Danny did know.
Tucker had despised them ever since his grandfather died. He had hated watching as the man slowly died of cancer, but still went to visit him all he could despite it.
Danny had tried so, so hard to be there for Tucker during that.
Tucker said it’d helped a lot.
Sam grabbed Tucker’s hand.
“We’ll come visit you every day, okay?”
Tucker nodded “I know. And thanks.”
Danny grabbed Tucker’s other hand, completing their little chain.
“Yeah, and I’ll bring you all the homework you miss.”
Tucker laughed at that.
“More like you’ll come pester me about helping you with it!”
Danny laughed along.
He would definitely come annoy Tucker into helping him with homework.
(Not that Tucker would mind.)
A nurse ducked his head into the room, calling out “Visiting hours are ending!” before quickly moving onto the next room.
Tucker, Sam and Danny sighed as one, before looking at each other and giggling.
“I’ll see you two losers tomorrow.” Sam said, before grabbing her backpack.
Danny smiled at Tucker.
“See you tomorrow.”
“See ya.”
\(oo)/
Danny was woken up by a ding! From his phone.
He groaned at seeing that it was still dark out.
Who the heck was texting him-
Oh.
It was Tucker.
Also, it was 2 AM.
Danny opened up the text message.
‘hey can u come hang with me? i can’t sleep’
Danny frowned, before replying.
‘yeah np, be there in a few’
He hated that Tucker had to be in the hospital overnight.
Danny shoved his phone into his backpack, along with his homework.
The teacher was gonna give Danny Tucker’s makeup work for today (well, technically yesterday) tomorrow, but Tuck would appreciate seeing it beforehand.
Also, then Danny could get him to explain what the heck their biology teacher was talking about.
(Danny did not like biology. At all.)
(At least living biology.)
(Ghost biology was way more of his thing.)
He transformed, rings of light traveling over him, before grabbing his backpack and darting out his window.
\(oo)/
Danny hovered outside of the hospital, trying to figure out which room was Tucker’s.
It was not easy to tell which was which from the outside, all of them looking the same.
At least he knew what floor it was on?
He flew closer to one of the windows, peeking inside to see if it was Tucker.
It wasn’t.
A small child, maybe 7? Looked out at him with an expression of glee on their tiny face.
He could see the kid practically vibrating as they looked at him.
He smiled at them, before holding up a finger to his lips in the universal sign for ‘shh’.
The kid bobbed their head up and down, before miming locking their lips and throwing away the key, then they held their hands up in the shape of a heart.
That was adorable, who’d taught them that?
Phantom smiled, and made a thin layer of ice on the window in the shape of a tiny blob ghost, with a small heart next to it.
It shouldn’t melt for at least a day.
He really hoped the kid liked it.
He looked back at them, seeing that their eyes were full of stars, their mouth open in awe.
Well, guess that answered whether they liked it.
Phantom waved goodbye at the kid, before flying towards the next window.
(Meanwhile, Sammy was so excited to tell their mom about this in the morning. Phantom had come to see them!!! This made being in the hospital totally worth it. He was the absolute coolest hero, even if Sammy’s mom thought he looked a bit creepy. Sammy didn’t think he did, but that was what their mom said every time Phantom came up. Sammy didn’t care though. Phantom was the best hero.)
He finally managed to find the right window after a minute more of peeking into windows, seeing Tucker sitting on his bed, messing with his PDA.
Danny floated through the window, before peeking over Tucker’s shoulder.
He was coding something, though Danny could not for the life of him tell what.
(Tucker had tried to teach Danny coding basics once. It did not go well. He kept forgetting semicolons were a thing that existed.)
Tucker didn’t even startle at Danny’s sudden appearance, far too used to his best friend’s antics by now.
“Thanks for coming dude.” Tucker said, eyes still focused on the code.
“Don’t worry about it, Tuck.” Danny said, floating over to sit next to Tucker’s bed.
Well, not next to Tucker’s bed, exactly.
More like floating in the air in a sitting position next to it, really.
Tucker finished whatever it was he had been doing, setting down his PDA on the nightstand.
He turned to smile at Danny “Not everyone would show up at 2 in the morning to comfort their friend.”
Danny shrugged, trying to pretend that he wasn’t ever not going to show up when Tucker asked.
“Really, it’s not like I had anything better to do.”
Tucker laughed, a low sound as he tried to keep his voice down.
“That’s fair. It’s not like you were working on homework.”
“Well….” Danny said, drawing out the word as he set the backpack down.
Tucker smiled, fond and exasperated.
“What is it now?”
Danny pouted, flipping upside down in the air.
“Normal biology makes no sense and is the bane of my existence.”
Tucker rolled his eyes.
“It’s not that bad.”
Danny gave Tucker his best pleading look.
“C’mon, please?”
Tucker sighed “Fine, but Danny, you just have to remember-“
Tucker launched into a ramble about their current biology assignment, and Danny flipped right side up, trying his best to listen.
It was strange, how much of this Tucker had managed to memorize.
Some of Sam’s rants must’ve stuck in his brain.
(Or maybe Tucker just really liked learning about animal life cycles.)
Danny, meanwhile, tended to just tune Sam out.
And also Tucker, he realized.
He had no clue what he had been saying.
Tucker paused for a moment, seeing Danny looking completely lost.
“Look just- Give me the book, I’ll show you what I mean.”
Danny grabbed his biology textbook, handing it over to Tucker.
Tucker flipped it open, motioning for Danny to give him a pencil.
Danny smiled at how sure Tucker was that Danny would give him a pencil without him asking.
Of course, Danny did give him it almost immediately.
“So, if you see here-“
Danny crossed his legs, floating a little over the edge of the bed as he listened to Tucker.
(Who was really cute when he was explaining something- no don’t go there.)
\(oo)/
It took an hour, but Tucker had finally managed to explain the concepts used on the assignment well enough that Danny was pretty sure he wouldn’t fail.
So, that was good.
Tucker closed the textbook, handing it over to Danny.
“Thanks Tuck. I probably won’t fail it.”
Tucker snorted “You definitely won’t fail it. Or at least if you do, it won’t be my fault.”
Danny rolled his eyes.
He flipped around, laying in the air as he looked at Tucker.
“You’re okay, right? I know that you hate hospitals but I just wanted to check because-“
“I’m fine, Danny. Hospitals suck, I hate being here, but I’m fine. You don’t need to worry.” Tucker said, cutting him off.
Danny turned away, looking at the visiting hours sheet on the wall instead of at Tucker.
“I don’t- It’s my fault, though.”
He heard Tucker sigh.
“Danny. It wasn’t your fault that I got hurt, okay? It was mine. I shouldn’t have gone out alone, especially against Skulker.”
Danny could hear the self-deprecation in Tucker’s voice.
Again.
Danny hated it when he did that, acted like he wasn’t worth it, wasn’t capable, just because he didn’t have powers.
He twisted back around to glare at Tucker, his annoyance overtaking his guilt.
 “Tuck, it’s not your fault! And don’t talk like that! You’re my best friend, and you’re awesome! With or without powers.”
Tucker smiled, and Danny realized that Tucker had been trying to get him to look at him.
Danny rolled his eyes, but didn’t turn back around.
“Look, how about we agree that it’s neither of our faults, and neither of us need to feel bad about it?” Tucker said.
Danny sighed, but nodded.
“Yeah, that’s… that’s fair.”
Tucker beamed, before grabbing Danny’s hand and tugging him into a hug. Danny went with the motion, not bothering to fight it.
Tucker’s hugs were great.
They stayed there for a moment, before Tucker let Danny go, a smile on his face.
Danny floated away slightly, hovering on his back, before flipping his head upside down to look at Tucker with a grin.
And then he heard the door open behind him.
Oh crap-
He twisted up, moving his torso in way that wasn’t exactly something humans could do, seeing that there was a nurse standing there.
She had a look of shock on her face, a hand brought up to her mouth.
Danny went invisible.
Damn, he really hoped Tucker could cover for this.
It would be a nightmare if Danny’s parents got called.
Danny darted into the corner, not wanting to deal with the nurse accidentally walking through him if she went over to Tucker’s bed.
(It was a disconcerting feeling, someone passing through him when he was a ghost. Not for him, really, he barely noticed, but Sam and Tucker had told him that it felt like there were invisible fingers trailing over their skin, when they’d tested it out.)
The nurse stood there a moment more, frozen in her surprise.
Danny saw Tucker cringe slightly.
“Um, hey? What’s up?”
The nurse shook her head, before saying hesitantly “I, you didn’t see anything?”
Tucker grabbed his PDA from the nightstand, fiddling with it.
“Nope, nothing. Who- What would even be there?”
He was not a good liar.
Danny sighed, just slightly.
The nurse turned towards the sound, but just shook her head again.
“Nothing, I don’t know. I thought I saw something. Don’t worry about it.”
A bright smile came on her face, obviously practiced for dealing with patients.
“So, any issues? Any pain? We’re still on the lookout for any internal bleeding.” She said as she picked up Tucker’s chart, looking at something on it.
Tucker flipped over his PDA, his fingers twitching like he wanted to start typing something.
“I’ve been okay, just couldn’t sleep.”
The nurse glanced up at him.
“Do you want some melatonin? It can’t mess up any of the blood thinners, antibiotics, or pain meds we’ve got you on, and it’ll help you sleep.”
Danny’s eyes widened.
Blood thinners? Danny hadn’t realized that they’d put Tucker on anything like that.
He’d figured that he’d be on antibiotics and pain meds, but blood thinners?
Why was he on blood thinners?
Weren’t those for when someone got surgery-
Tucker shrugged.
“I mean, sure? I might not take it right away.”
The nurse nodded, her smile still fixed on her face.
“Okay, I’ll bring that in for you.”
She stepped outside the room, and Danny followed her.
He was curious, and also-
Tucker was on blood thinners, apparently.
And hadn’t told Danny.
Had his injuries been more serious than he’d said? He’d insisted it was just some bruising, that they were being overcautious with the observation.
Danny poked his head through the wall, watching as the nurse leaned against the wall, holding a hand to her chest.
Oh. He’d really scared her.
She was mumbling under her breath.
“It was nothing Kate, you don’t need to freak out about it, of course there wasn’t a ghost in your patient’s room at 3 AM, that would be ridiculous-“
She continued to mutter to herself, before pushing off the wall and walking down the hallway.
Danny felt pretty bad about scaring her, but he couldn’t exactly apologize.
…Maybe he should just, leave her something nice?
He looked over to the nurse’s station.
He drifted over.
It was full of papers, patient charts and schedules and a bunch of stuff that looked way too medical-y for Danny to want to deal with.
He bit his lip, thinking.
Maybe she’d just like a flower?
Girls liked flowers.
Danny carefully formed a flower out of ice, one that looks kinda like a daisy maybe?
Danny was better at remembering what flowers looked like than what they were called.
(Also, he wasn’t entirely sure it wasn’t a ghost flower.)
(Again, he was better at remembering what they looked like than what they were called, or where he found them.)
Satisfied with his small apology, Danny ducked back through the wall into Tucker’s room.
And then he remembered, oh right, Tucker, maybe, was lying about his injuries.
Tucker was typing something on his PDA, but he looked up when Danny came back into the room.
Danny was still invisible, but Tucker and Sam had figured out that when he entered a room, even if he was invisible, the temperature dropped slightly.
No one else had noticed that yet, but Tucker thought it was great, since it meant he knew where Danny was.
Danny did not think that it was great right now.
“Dude, what were you even doing?” Tucker said, putting down his PDA.
Danny faded back into visibility, trying to keep his face blank, or at least close to it.
“I was checking on the nurse. I scared her a lot, Tuck.”
Tucker grimaced.
“Yeah, but you knew what you look like when you’re in shadow.”
Danny did.
Apparently, something about low light made him look more ghostlike, stretching out his proportions and blurring his features. He never noticed it, but Tucker had tried to describe it to him as best as he could.
Sam had grinned and said that he looked awesome, like he was from a horror movie.
(Danny hadn’t liked that description. He didn’t want to be scary.)
(Sam hadn’t said it again.)
“Also, your eyes were reflecting the light, like a cat or something.” Tucker added, drawing Danny’s attention back to him.
Danny frowned.
“They were? That’s new.”
Tucker shrugged.
“Looked cool, though.”
It probably had.
“I gave her an ice flower, the nurse I mean. I wanted to aplogize.” Danny said.
Tucker grinned, wiggling his eyebrows.
“You’ve got a crush-“
Danny groaned.
“Tuck, seriously, you do not have to say that anytime I give a girl anything.”
Tucker laughed.
“I know, but your reactions are so funny.”
Danny sighed.
He knew that he needed to stop reacting, if he actually wanted Tucker to stop.
But it got under his skin, when Tucker teased him about having crushes on girls.
(Danny tried not to think about why that was.)
He floated closer to Tucker’s bed, a small frown on his face.
The nurse would probably be back soon.
But Danny really wanted to know what was happening with Tucker’s injuries.
“Tuck, why are you on blood thinners?”
Tucker looked away, all of the humor gone.
“I didn’t want you to worry.”
Danny huffed.
“What do you mean? Just tell me!”
Tucker sighed, before looking pleadingly at Danny.
“Don’t freak out, but I had surgery. That’s why I’m on blood thinners.”
Danny reeled back.
Tucker had surgery?
His injuries had been bad enough for that?
(Danny had failed that badly?)
“You- you were that hurt?” Danny asked, his voice wavering.
Tucker got a look of panic on his face.
“I’m fine, I’m fine! Danny I swear, it was almost nothing, they just had to fix some internal bleeding-“
“You had internal bleeding?” Danny screeched.
Tucker nodded hesitantly.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Danny asked, hurt in his voice.
Had Tucker been mad at him for failing to protect him-?
“I didn’t want you to worry, it wasn’t as bad as it sounds-“
The door opened.
Danny went invisible almost immediately this time, not wanting to scare the nurse again.
She looked less freaked out, a smile fixed on her face.
“Here’s that melatonin, sorry that it took me so long to get.”
She handed Tucker a small cup, two pills in it.
“Once you take those, it should be easier for you to fall asleep.”
Tucker nodded, giving her a small smile.
“Thanks.”
He glanced to the corner Danny was in, as the nurse did one last check of his vitals.
Danny sighed almost silently from his corner.
He’d failed, he’d let Tucker get hurt-
Tucker hadn’t told him.
The nurse left, telling Tucker to go to sleep as she did.
Danny faded back into visibility, his face downcast.
Tucker sighed at his expression.
“Danny, I didn’t want you to worry-“
“Tell me next time.” Danny said pleadingly, desperately.
If he didn’t know when he’d failed, he couldn’t try to make sure it didn’t happen again.
Tucker shook his head, not in denial but in exasperation.
“Okay. I’ll tell you next time.”
Danny felt relief travel through him, settling something in his core.
He needed to know when Tucker, or Sam, got hurt.
He needed to make sure it didn’t happen again.
Danny floated forward, before hugging Tucker.
Tucker rolled his eyes, leaning into the hug.
“Is this some ghost thing? Feels like a ghost thing.”
Danny laughed, rolling his eyes right back at Tucker.
“Really, it’s a ghost thing to care about my friends now-?”
Tucker shoved lightly at Danny, humor in his face.
“Shut up, you know what I mean-“
Danny grinned, leaning back, still floating in front of Tucker.
“It’s not a ghost thing, Tuck. I just wanna make sure you’re okay.”
Tucker smiled softly at Danny at the sentiment behind his words.
Danny looked away, feeling his face heat up.
Tucker laughed slightly at Danny’s apparent embarrassment.
(It wasn’t embarrassment. He just couldn’t handle Tucker smiling at him like that, it was so full of love-)
Danny looked back at him, seeing Tucker grinning at him.
He crossed his arms with a huff, dramatic and insincere.
“You don’t have to annoying about it-“
Tucker cut him off with another laugh, before he looked over to his PDA, seeing the time.
He sighed.
Danny glanced over as well, seeing that it was almost 4 AM.
He needed to get home, heck-
His mom was always up at six, and she checked on Danny and Jazz at the same time.
And Danny would really like to get some more sleep before he was inevitably woken up by his mom checking on him.
He looked back to Tucker, an apologetic look on his face.
“I gotta go, sorry-“
Tucker waved him off.
“No worries. Thanks for coming to hang out.”
Danny smiled, about to grab his bag-
And then he had a very impulsive thought.
He wavered for a moment.
Before deciding, yeah, it’s worth it.
He leaned forward, giving Tucker a kiss on the cheek.
Tucker looked at him in complete surprise.
Danny smiled softly at him, and Tucker blushed.
(Ha, sweet revenge.)
Danny felt all of his sudden confidence leave him in moments.
He’d actually just done that, Ancients-
He darted away, grabbing his bag quickly.
“So uh, yeah no problem, I’ll see you at school-!” Danny said in a rush, before flying out of the window.
He was halfway to his house before he remembered that no, he wouldn’t see Tucker at school, because Tucker was still gonna be in the hospital for a few more days.
He was such a mess.
He couldn’t believe he’d just done that, kissed Tucker on the cheek.
(He wished he could do it again.)
\(oo)/
Tucker watched as Danny flew away.
He held a hand to his cheek.
His best friend had just kissed him.
On the cheek, but still.
He’d kissed Tucker.
A soft smile came onto his face.
If Danny felt the same-
Oh, Tucker was so going to flirt with him when he came back in the morning.
Danny wasn’t gonna know what hit him.
He took the melatonin pills, laying down to wait for the sleepiness to hit him.
Tucker grinned to himself.
This was going to be fun.
And maybe he’d get a boyfriend out of it.
A man could dream.
Chapter 1: Bring me to Life
By GhostlyGlimmer
Anita Grayves stretched her back, each vertebra popping with a satisfying crack as she exhaled a long sigh. The dim, sterile light of the embalming room cast a clinical glow over her as she donned her PPE, the familiar rustle of the fabric and snap of the gloves a ritual she knew too well. Her technician, Dalton, rolled in the gurney with the next client, the wheels creaking slightly on the cold tile floor. With deliberate care, he unzipped the black body bag, revealing the still form inside.
Danny Fenton, just seventeen years old, lay before her. His once vibrant eyes, now milky white and clouded, stared unseeingly at the ceiling. The raven-black hair that had probably once been meticulously styled was now disheveled, a sharp contrast to the pallor of his skin. He was small for his age, almost fragile-looking, and Anita couldn’t help but feel a pang of sorrow as she gazed down at him.
But it was the Y-shaped scar on his chest that made her pause. Her brow furrowed in deep thought. She had seen countless autopsy scars in her career, but this was different. The coroner’s report had mentioned it wasn’t a typical dissection; it was a vivisection. The word sent a chill down her spine. She had heard stories, whispers of unsanctioned procedures, but she never thought she’d be the one to witness the aftermath.
Taking a deep breath, Anita began the embalming process. The familiar hum of the pump filled the room as she attached the trocar to his abdomen, starting the slow, methodical draining of blood from the body. The crimson fluid seeped out, replaced with embalming chemicals that would preserve what remained, ensuring the semblance of life for his final viewing.
With the embalming fluids circulating, she moved on to setting his face. It was important that he looked peaceful, almost as if he were merely sleeping. She began with his mouth, loading the needle injector with a barbed-tipped wire. The tool clicked as she pressed it against the maxilla, the wire piercing through the bone with precision. She repeated the process with the mandible, then twisted the wires together, securing his jaw in place. There would be no risk of it coming loose during the funeral, sparing his family the distress of seeing him slack-jawed in the casket.
Next were his eyes. Anita carefully pulled back his eyelids, reaching for the eye caps—small, clear discs with barbed spikes on the inside. They would help his eyes maintain a natural, slightly closed appearance, preventing the sunken look that so often accompanied death. She was inches away from placing them on his clouded eyes when her stomach let out a loud grumble.
“Damn it,” she muttered, the sudden urge reminding her of the coffee she had downed earlier.
Reluctantly, she pushed back her rolling chair, the casters scraping against the tile. She stripped off her PPE, each piece coming off with a practiced flick, and headed for the bathroom. The small, clinical space echoed with the sound of her footsteps as she entered, the door clicking shut behind her. She hurried through her business, then paused at the sink, methodically scrubbing her hands. As she looked up into the mirror, her reflection stared back at her—haggard, with dark circles etched under her tired eyes. She grimaced, making a mental note to try and get some sleep tonight.
Just as she turned off the faucet, the lights flickered, followed by a low, otherworldly groan that seemed to reverberate through the walls. Anita froze, her heart skipping a beat. It was a sound unlike anything she had heard before—something between a wail and a whisper, as if the air itself was being torn apart. A chill ran down her spine, and she stood there, paralyzed, staring at her own reflection, waiting for something—anything—to happen.
Anita jolted at the horrific sound, the air around her vibrating with an unnatural, bone-chilling resonance. Her hands flew to her ears in a desperate attempt to block out the noise, but it was too late. A searing pain shot through her head, her vision darkening as her eyes rolled back. She crumpled to the cold, sterile floor, her body limp, blood trickling from her ears and pooling beneath her head in a dark, crimson stain.
Meanwhile, Danny Fenton’s eyes shot open in terror. His pupils contracted painfully against the blinding fluorescence of the room, his breath catching in his throat. His mind, sluggish and disoriented, struggled to make sense of what was happening. His hands moved instinctively to his face, rubbing his eyes as if trying to erase a bad dream.
But this was no dream.
As his vision cleared, he looked around, taking in the stark white walls and the cold steel surfaces of the embalming room. The air was thick with the acrid scent of formaldehyde, stinging his nose and making him gag. Panic surged through him as he realized he was completely naked, save for a thin cloth draped haphazardly over his waist.
But it was when his gaze fell on his chest that the true horror set in.
There, etched into his skin, was a large, brutal Y-shaped scar, stretching from his shoulders to his pubic bone. The sight of it made his stomach churn. His face contorted in terror, a scream tearing from his throat, raw and primal. His chest heaved with ragged breaths, each one more desperate than the last, as he clutched his head in his hands, trying to comprehend the impossible. The room seemed to close in around him, the sterile environment suffocating, the silence after his scream deafening.
Danny was alive—but something was horribly, irrevocably wrong.
As Danny’s scream echoed in the sterile room, he froze, realizing something was terribly wrong with his voice. It wasn’t his voice. It was distorted, hollow, like a death rattle echoing from the depths of a crypt. The sound made his skin crawl, every hair on his body standing on end. It was the kind of voice that belonged to something not of this world—something dead. He slapped his hands over his mouth, horrified, tears welling up in his cloudy white eyes.
He felt something hard under his lips and pulled them open, trembling fingers probing inside his mouth. His breath hitched when he encountered metal wires, woven cruelly through his teeth. Panic surged through him, and he tried to wrench his jaw open, but it wouldn’t budge. A sharp, searing pain shot through his skull, and he winced, the realization of his confinement crashing down on him.
Tears streamed down his face, his entire body quaking with fear and confusion. Sobs wracked his fragile form, the reality of his situation suffocating him. This couldn’t be happening—this had to be a nightmare. What the hell was going on? Why was he connected to this machine? Why was there a grotesque wound carved into his chest? And why, oh God, why was his jaw wired shut?
His mind spiraled, grasping desperately for memories, for anything that could explain this horror. But everything was a blur, a foggy haze that clouded his thoughts. He couldn’t think straight, his head pounding with the effort of trying to piece together the fragments of his shattered memory.
But through the chaos, one thought pierced the fog: he needed help. He needed to find his family, his friends. He clung to the memory of them like a lifeline, the only clear images in his fractured mind. Sam and Tucker—they would know what to do. They had always been there for him, through every strange and terrifying moment of his life. If anyone could help him make sense of this nightmare, it was them. He had to find them. He had to get out of here.
Every year, Sam, Danny, and Tucker go on a vacation courtesy of Sam's very reluctant parents. This year, it was Tuckers turn to choose the location and activities, and he chose Gotham.
Not only did it have Wayne Tech, one of the most technologically advanced companies, but Gotham was also hosting a massive furry convention this year and the three of them were cosplaying as Succubats from the Dragon Quest series. They had gone all out, full purple body and face paint, contacts that made the whites of their eyes black, hand died leggings, leotards, and fuzzy leg warmers as well as everything else. Let's just say there was a lot of sowing involved.
Danny even made a mad scientist invention that toyed with gravity so that they could fly while flapping their wings. His parents were so proud and made them stop for pictures before they left.
The convention was fun and they got saved by Robin once and ended up teasing him a bit. Sam was cackling the next day when she found out Robin had gone through the rest of his patrol not knowing that Danny's purple galaxy lipstick was still on his cheek the entire time.
The only part they didn't like was this weird trenchcoat guy kept following them around in the shadows, but Batman was with him, so it was probably okay. The Justice League had found out about the anti ecto acts and publicly tore the government a new one. Danny had barely managed to hide his parents' involvement and work with Tuckers and Vlads' help. While he and Vlad were still bitter enemies, Vlad didn't want to see Maddie in jail, and Danny could work with that.
On the flip side of things, the Justice League still had no idea about the portals in Amity Park or that anything was going on there. So when John Constantine found out about a insanely powerful entity that radiated death energy like the sun radiated light heading straight to Gotham, he panicked and immediately went to Batman to tell him the bad news.
John had no idea what this creature was and was determined to find out, but between the make up and body paint and everything else, it was impossible to discover the identity of the three teens. It didn't help that Danny could just turn them invisible/fly them everywhere so John and Bruce are suffering
Daniel Fenton-Nightingale. Species; Snow elf. Class; Shadow Sorcerer/ Wizard school of Necromancy
As a baby, Danny was saved by Maddie and Jack from a ritual of the Death cult of the Ghost King. They couldn't find his home as snow elves were thought as myths and decided to adopt him as their own. Sam is a half-elf born from her fathers dalliances. Her step-mother is dissaproving of her half elf nature and tries very hard to make Sam act like a "True Elf', forcing her into the college of Elloquence at a young age despite her love for nature. Sam dreams of being a druid and ran off after hearing of a arranged marriage with another elf to "clean the bloodline". She runs into the forest hoping to find a druid conclave. After weeks in the forest she becomes a Nature cleric after a run-in with a nature god and is lead to run face first into Danny and his family. Danny is the prettiest elf she's ever seen, but she'll never tell him that.
Doctor Danny Chapter 9
The jet was surprisingly efficient. The landed on a private airfield and found a taxi into the town.
"So where exactly are we going?"
"Danny's childhood home"
Jason raised an eyebrow, "we getting his parents?"
Sam crisply should her head no.
"They don't know about Danny's condition, and it'll stay that way if I can help it"
Sam made the cab let them out a street before the house.
"I've got to make sure they aren't here" Sam said as she stealthily slunk around the house, peaking in the windows.
Jason admired the strange architecture of the house. What were these people? Supervillains? Mad scientists?
The Fenton Assault Vehicle was nowhere in sight. Always a good sign.
Sam forced a window open from the outside.
"Breaking in, nice." Jason commented.
She rolled her eyes and climbed through the window. Jason followed her despite his remark.
Sam noticed that the house hadn't changed much at all.
She made her way to Danny's old room.
Jason smirked at the mess. Typical teenage mess.
Sam pulled out a math textbook and flipped a few pages. A worn looking paper fell out. She dropped the book and grabbed the paper.
"This is going to be our map" Sam said handing it to him.
Jason unfolded it and scrunched his face in confusion. It didn't look like any map he had seen before.
Sam almost felt nostalgic, her nostalgia turned to anxiety as she reached the lab door.
"What is it?" Jason asked.
Sam opened the door, "this is where Danny had the accident" she said as she took carefully steps down the stairs.
Jason's eyes took a calculating sweep over the inventory of this lab. Almost every surface was taken up in space by some weird looking gun or belt or fishing rod?
Sam walked over to a large medal door.
"What's that?"
Sams expression seemed tense.
"It's, the ghost zone. Officially called the infinite realms"
She pressed a button and the mechanical doors opened up to reveal a bright swirling green vertical pit.
"We have to go in there"
Jason felt a cold sweat taking over.
"You sure this is safe?" Jason asked keeping a careful distance away from it.
"I've been in there before and I'm still alive. The portal itself is harmless. What it contains is not."
Sam smacked a large mechanical space rocket looking thing.
"Get in"
Jason wanted to dismantle the crazy portal and bomb this house but Danny needed help, so he got in.
The machine started up and lifted off the ground. Sam shifted a stick and it went forward.
Jason looked out the window in morbid curiosity.
All around were floating doors.
"What are those?"
"Doors to other dimensions, times zones, they could be spacial anomalies or fields of flowers." Sam responded keeping her eyes on the path ahead of them.
"This map is so weird, but I think it's starting to make sense now" Jason said. Sam glanced at it.
"Your holding it upside down"
Jason turned it the correct way.
"Ah now is see. This must be the evil castle and that must be the pit that swallows up anything that goes near it" he said pointing to a circle with a swirl in it.
"Basically yeah"
Suddenly the temperature dropped leaving Jason shivering.
"Welcome to the Far Frozen Jason" Sam said as they touched down in a snowy patch.
"Am I going to end up frozen?" He asked his teeth chattering.
"Don't be a baby" Sam said rolling her eyes. She tossed Jason a spare coat that was a little tight on him and they made their way to a nearby cave.
"FROSTBITE!" Sam yelled as they walked in. Jason tried not to stare at talk the yeti people. The cave turned out to be giant with tons of systems where he guessed the yeti people lived.
"Is that you Lady Sam?" A heavy voice asked.
"Yeah, it's me. Phantom needs your help"
A large yeti with a cloth sash made his way towards them.
"The great one is in trouble?"
Jason shot a look a Sam when he heard the nickname only to be ignored.
"He was poisoned with blood blossoms, I think it was a diluted version though"
"Ah, blood blossoms. And your friend here? He seems to be in need of some assistance as well"
"What Jason?" Sam looked at him suspiciously.
"Step forward of you please"
Jason followed his command. He felt a sudden cold radiat throughout his chest spreading through his upper forearms and entering his veins.
"This should naturally filter out your contamination"
Jason had to admit he felt clear. The heaviness on his chest was gone and he didn't feel particularly pissed off either.
"Thank you" he breathed out.
"As for the great one, you need to give him this"
Frostbite took a small bottle from the other yeti. Inside was a cosmic looking liquid.
"Make sure he gets this. His core might be in danger as well. He will need time to recover. Send my wishes of health to the great one please Lady Sam"
"I will" she nodded taking the bottle.
Once they were back in the Fenton shuttle Sam soared Jason a glance.
"So what's up with you?" Sam asked.
Jason tapped the window, "I died and was revived with a toxic liquid that a cult famously calls the Lazarus Pits"
" you and Danny have that in common"
"What?" Jason asked alarmed.
She laughed, "sorry, I meant dying and coming back. Danny changed because of the accident. His ghost half, the dead side, is what is ironically keeping him alive"
Jason relaxed a bit.
"Yeah, he told me he was half ghost"
"He did! Danny has always been way too trusting. Not that I don't think you can be trusted, it's just, I worry about Danny you know?"
Jason thought about how soft Danny seemed to be, an image of him shoving Jason out his window played in his head.
"I know exactly what you mean"
The shuttle went back though the portal and they stepped out. Sam closed the portal and put a passcode so the Fenton's couldn't open it.
Suddenly the loud booming voice of Jack Fenton could be heard throughout the house.
"Shit" Sam whispered.
"I know Jack, we were so close this time" Maddie said as they walked down the steps in their lab.
"We'll get em next time, no ghost is any match for Jack Fenton!"
Hanging very close to the ceiling from a grappling hook, were Sam and Jason.
Jason let them down slowly and released the grappling hook and the two made a break for the stairs. The Fenton doctors stayed oblivious to the break in.
Sam loud out a loud 'whoop' after they successfully escaped the Fenton household.
"Don't tell bats we broke in to someone's house" Jason said.
"What about the portal?"
Jason tilted his head, "yeah that's going to need explaining"
Sam smiled, "you know Danny Is technically king of that so, it could be like diplomatic. Maybe the JL will leave him alone"
Jason shook his head, "Bats is another breed. Trust me. If he wants to know something he's gonna find out what it is."
Sam sighed, "yeah he seems like the type"
The jet was ready for them when they finally managed to get back to it.
"I hope Tucker was able to help"
"Tuckers Danny's
other friend right?"
"Yeah, he's the tech support of our group."
The corner of Jason's mouth twitched up.
"I have someone like that, we call her Babs"
The jet landed back in Gotham and they made their way back to Danny.
"Tucker!" Sam exclaimed as she ran in and hugged him.
"Hey Sam!"
She pulled away and  held up the bottle.
"This is it, Frostbite said this would work"
"Frostbite?" Superman asked confused.
"He helped Danny before when his powers almost froze him alive" Tucker explained.
"Wow, poor guy" Flash said, "say what's that stuff made out of?"
Sam shrugged, "no clue".
She put the liquid in a clean IV bag and hook it up.
Danny face twitched and scrunched up before relaxing again.
"Now we wait. His core is still recovering from his fight. He hasn't worsened at all has he?" Sam asked.
"No, all his readings are consistent to his normal levels. I noticed some internal burning, I hope that's resolved by your medicine " Superman said.
"Me too" Sam said patting Danny's hand.
"Is Vlad in prison?" Tucker asked with venom in his tone.
"No, he's not in prison" Bruce answered.
"Tch, figures. I hate rich people!"
Sam raised an eyebrow.
"You don't count Sam, you don't live on your parents money"
Sam thought about for a second, "yeah but not all rich people suck. Just most of them"
Jason started cracking up.
Bruce glanced at Jason. When was the last time he had seen Jason smile?
"Oh yeah, status report on the pits. I'm  slowly being healed by cold magic stuff"
Sam slapped her forehead and groaned.
"We have to explain the infinite realms"
Sam took some time explaining the ghost zone and how it worked. Luckily Tucker had already shown them ALL of Danny's enemies. All Sam had to do was explain how the ghost zone was the "flip side of our world".
"The observants are like the kings council, they kind of have more authority than the king. Its around the same. Then there's clockwork. Hes a ghost who can interact with timelines"
"They sound powerful"
"They are, luckily they're more or less on our side, the non-evil side. Since they're dead they can't really become evil either. They aren't swayed by humanity"
Bruce nodded. He couldn't make a contingency plan against the Lord of time. That's like saying you know how to kill God.
"Only one time did he mess with time and it was for Danny. Danny has that kind of sway. It makes you want to do whatever you can for him"
"That's impressive"
"Hes incredible" Jason said sitting down.
"Yeah, he is" Sam smiled.
Danny's condition stabled enough to move him to the manor. They did so in citizen form. It would look suspicious if a bunch of heroes showed up at Wayne Manor.
Jason sat by Danny's bed. It was decided Sam and Tucker would stay at the manor until Danny woke up.
Which might be a while. Sure the medicine was working but Danny's core needed time to recover.
TUCKER DANNY JACK AND SKULKER
"Ok, you're gonna need to run me through this one more time," Tucker said, trailing after Danny towards the Fentonwork's lab.
"You remember that Skulker is like, a tiny little blob thing in a mech suit, right?" Danny asked.
"Of course! How could I forget, I still have the pictures."
"Well," Danny said. "Apparently, if he gets hit hard enough in like, five different specific spots, he can't pilot the mech suit anymore? Like it just doesn't move."
"And let me guess," Tucker said. "You hit him hard enough in those five specific spots and now, he's what? Sitting on the table in the lab?" Danny scratched the back of his neck sheepishly. Tucker sighed. "I don't know why you think I can fix him. Like, I appreciate the confidence in me, I am pretty great, but there's a big difference between building a computer and fixing a whole guy."
Tucker's feet hit metal as they made their way through the door into the basement. Sure enough, as soon as they made it to the bottom, Tucker saw Skulker. Or rather, Skulker's empty, broken suit. "Jesus, dude, did you put him through a garbage disposal or something?"
"That is, in fact, a thing that happened," Skulker's real, high pitched voice came from Tucker's left. "It was right after I threw him into the sewer!"
"And I stand by my decision," Danny said. He made his way over to where Skulker floated and lifted himself onto the only clear spot on Jack's desk. "Have you ever seen the sewers? They stink. Almost as bad as your aim."
"You insufferable whelp, just wait until my suit is operational, and I'll show you aim!"
"Nuh uh, you agreed one month no hunting if I fixed it up," Danny said.
"Of course," Skulker said. "Every great hunter knows that you don't hunt in off season."
"Hey now, I don't see you trying to fix this, so why do you get to make the deal?" Tucker protested while gathering together tools. The Fenton's lab was a mess, as it always was, but Tucker had puttered around there enough with Danny to know the not quite organized chaos. "What am I gonna get out of it?"
"Um. A theoretical month of extra time with your best friend?"
"I was thinking more along the lines of an all expenses paid round trip on the Phantom Express to that Tech EXPO happening in a few weeks," Tucker said. "You remember the one."
"Dude, that place is like, 500 miles away!" Danny argued. "It'll take ages to get there if I carry you."
"It will not. We've clocked your flight speed at well over 150, it'll just be a few hours."
"I don't know if you know this, but carrying someone for a few hours while flying a hundred miles an hour isn't what most people would describe as easy."
"You're not most people," Tucker said. "But if you don't want my technological expertise, I'll just be on my way. I'm sure you'll figure out how to get this together." He turned to walk back towards the stairs.
Danny groaned. "Fine. But you're paying for my ticket."
Tucker turned back around with a smirk, cracking his knuckles. "Deal. Now, sit back, relax, and watch the master at work."
---
It ended up being only Danny who was sitting back and relaxing. As Tucker had predicted, a giant ghostly robot mech suit was, in fact, very different to anything Tucker had worked with before. Skulker knew much more about it than he did, so the ghost had taken to hovering over Tucker's shoulder, directing his work and shouting threats at Danny. And occasionally Tucker. (He was somewhere between creeped out and flattered that Skulker thought he was worthy to insult, if not fully hunt. That was one of the details he was never going to mention anywhere within a hundred miles of Jazz.)
"Could you grab me that laser wrench thing?" Tucker asked. "The one your parents use for small scale ectoplasm constructs."
Danny grabbed one of the many tools off of Jack's desk. "This one?" Tucker glanced over quickly, not willing to take his eyes off of the suit when he was quite literally elbow deep in machinery.
"No, the other one. I think it glows purple sometimes?" Danny made a noise of acknowledgement before holding up a similar looking device. "That's the one."
"Hey Jellybean, go long," Danny said before tossing the device at Skulker. Tucker couldn't help snorting at the indignant squeak Skulker made when he caught the device.
"One day, ghost child, I will have your head hanging from my wall, and you will never be able to fling around childish insults ever again," he grumbled, passing the device to Tucker.
"Yea, I've heard that before. Maybe one day you'll be able to actually follow through on your threats."
Tucker already knew what Skulker was going to say, or at least had a pretty good guess. Despite how frequently they threw each other through buildings, Danny and Skulker were friends, at least in a ghostly sense. He'd heard their banter both in and out of combat enough to let the comments fade into background noise, focusing instead on fixing the part he needed the tool for.
This part of the suit was delicate, to say the least. Skulker's suit fed almost entirely on ambient ectoplasm, whether that be excess produced by Skulker himself or by the environment he was in. This part was a regulator of that energy, allowing for the suit to store excess power for use later, like when he was blasting twenty seven different missiles and a laser canon at Danny. If Tucker fucked it up, there was a lot of different things that could happen, all of them bad with a capital B, and most of them ending in some kind of explosion. Minor explosions, admittedly, and ones that would take a while to build up, especially outside of the ghost zone, but an explosion nonetheless.
Luckily for Tucker, the system was pretty simple. A couple of wires and a designated compartment that held the filtered ectoplasm. All Tucker needed to do was reconnect the wire here, seal off the leak there, and-
Tucker jumped as the door to the basement slammed open, followed by loud heavy footsteps. He pulled the tool out of the cavity in Skulker's arm quickly, throwing the tool to the other side of the room, and spun around to try and hide Skulker's suit from Jack. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Danny doing the same for actual Skulker, despite the fact that Skulker had gone invisible.
"Danny boy!" Jack called from the stairs, still out of view. "I thought I heard you and your friends down here!" Jack's head poked out from the top of the stairs. Tucker met his eyes, watched as it flicked from his face, to Danny, to Skulker's suit. Tucker covered his ears preemptively. "GHOST" Jack bellowed, grabbing an ecto-blaster from wherever he stored them on his hazmat suit, and opening fire towards Tucker.
It was lucky that Jack's aim was so bad; Tucker might've gotten better at dodging ectoblasts, but at such a close range, there was no way he'd get out of the way in time. And ectorays stung, and the residue it left never came out. Instead the ectoblasts hit against the back wall, leaving a green, smoldering mark.
"Dad, stop!" Danny called, dashing towards Jack a little too quickly.
"Danny, what are you doing? There's a ghost in our basement!" Jack shouted, but he didn't fire the ecto-blaster again. Not with Danny so close.
"A ghost that is completely and totally still with both me and Tucker down here?" Danny asked. Jack narrowed his eyes, visibly processing the information. Then his features lit up and he grabbed Danny in a bear hug. "Ok uh what are we doing now."
"You caught the ghost, isn't that right Danny-boy!" Jack said, not putting Danny down. "That's that one ghost hunter that's always showing up to try and hunt down the ghost boy. as if he would ever be able to catch the ghost before we could." Tucker saw Skulker reappear over Jack's shoulder, small mouth opened to protest, before Danny's hand clamped around him. He couldn't see Danny's face at this angle, but the faint green glow indicated that Danny was using his Scary Eyes. It worked.
Danny let go of Skulker just as Jack set him down. "Uh, yea! It uh. Wasn't too hard?"
"Wasn't to hard!" Jack said. "We've been trying to track this ghost down for nearly as long as the ghost boy! For you to catch him, why, you must be some ghost hunting prodigy! C'mon, let's check out your catch!" Jack practically dragged Danny over to the suit, and Tucker reproached at his insistent waving. He couldn't see very well around the brick wall that was jack Fenton, but he was able to see enough. Enough to make him duck under Jack's arm to get a closer look, and start swearing.
"Is everything ok, Tuck?" Danny asked.
"Of course it is!" Jack answered in his place. "I'm sure he's just realizing how incredible this all is!"
"We might have a code potato," Tucker whispered so just Danny could hear. "Definitely gonna need help to fix it."
Danny's face sharpened in the way it always did when he was dealing with superhero stuff. "Hey, Dad, do you think we could get something to eat first? All that ghost hunting really works up an appetite."
"You bet it does! You go get something to eat, but science waits for no man! I need to make sure the ghost is secured for experimentation later. Don't want to risk him blowing up the house!" Jack reached out to grab the arm connected to the panel Tucker had been working on.
"Stop!" Tucker shouted, throwing his whole weight into Jack's arm to push it out of the way.
"What has gotten into you two?" Jack asked, brows knitting back together. "I feel like I'm missing something..."
Tucker met Danny's eyes. It had taken a long time, for them to be able to communicate just with a look, but over the years of near death (or post death, in Danny's case) situations, they'd gotten pretty good at it. Danny's ghost based empathy thing helped. Danny knew that Tucker was being very serious, life and death kind of situation. He could probably guess by Tucker's reaction to Jack that this was something incredibly delicate. Danny also knew that the game plan was still up to him; it was his secret, his half-life on the line.
"Dad, do you trust me?"
Jack turned his confused expression to Danny. "Of course I do, son."
"Then I need you to promise me something. You won't ask questions, you won't start a fight, and you won't get in the way," Danny said.
"Danny," Jack said slowly. "I don't understand. What do you-"
Danny cut him off. "Just promise me. Please?"
Jack was silent for a moment, before he nodded. "I promise."
"Tuck, what's going on?"
"I nicked the regulator when he came downstairs," Tucker said, adjusting slightly to the side so Danny could see. "It could be nothing, or it could be a very volatile explosion waiting to happen."
"Definitely an explosion," Skulker said, materializing above the suit. "That's a nasty one." Jack yelped in surprise, but put his hands over his mouth to silence it.
"How do we fix it?" Tucker asked. "I'm assuming we can't just throw it back into the ghost zone and be done with the problem."
"That's probably the worst thing you could do," Skulker said. "Unless your goal is to blow up the realms."
"Been there, done that, already stopped it from happening," Danny said. "What else do you got?"
"Could we try to reroute it somehow?" Tucker asked. "There's gotta be more of them in here somewhere, right?"
"There is, but they are located in distant locations. There would be no point of having them in the same area," Skulker said. "If you connected them, my suit would be completely unusable."
"Yea, but it would solve the literal ticking time bomb, wouldn't it?" Tucker asked.
"Perhaps," Skulker said. "But I wouldn't be able to get it back to my lair, and I would rather not have the whelp stinking the place up again."
"And yet you keep trying to get me there," Danny retorted.
"Yes, as a pelt. Not as you," Skulker said.
"Danno, what's going on?" Jack said, his voice significantly higher than it normally was.
"No questions," Danny replied. "I'll explain after. So, reconnecting to a different regulator is a no go. What about shutting down the power input in general."
"Impossible," Skulker scoffed, the sound odd in his tiny jelly bean voice. "If you could just shut it down that would be a massive overlook."
"You don't have any kind of shut down switch at all?" Tucker asked. "It seems like your style."
"Please, I'm not Technus."
Danny and Tucker laughed. "True that. So shutting it down won't work either. I'm not even going to bother suggesting letting it explode in an explosion proof place, so I'm out of ideas."
"I'm pretty much out too," Tucker said, staring into the hole in the side of the suit. "I'll keep thinking."
It was Jack who spoke next. "You're looking for a regulator for... ectoenergy?"
The three others turned to look at Jack. "Yea," Tucker said slowly. "It needs to hold filtered ectoplasm from the surroundings, and be able to expend it. Without exploding."
"Without exploding when I don't want it to!" Skulker amended.
"I could do without that," Danny mumbled.
"And it needs to fit in there?" Jack asked, gesturing to the suit. Tucker nodded. "Some of our ectoblasters have a regulator that functions like that. Would that work?" He was looking at Tucker, who looked at Skulker.
Skulker was thinking. "It may work temporarily, at least long enough for me to get back to the lair and fix it properly."
"What blaster is that in?" Danny asked.
"The bigger ones, but not as big as the Fenton Bazooka. Any of those should work," Jack said, and Danny ran off to grab the weapons. "You are...comfortable working with these types of things?" Jack asked Tucker after a moment of awkward silence.
"Not really," Tucker replied with a shrug much more nonchalant than he felt. "I know enough, and Skulker isn't a bad teacher, at least when it comes to this."
"So you're... Skulker?" Jack said to Skulker.
"I am Skulker, the greatest hunter the ghost zone has ever seen!" Skulker said.
"Wait, I thought this ghost was the greatest hunter?" Jack gestured to the suit.
"I built it as a tool to use during my hunts!"
Tucker could see the gears turning in Jack's head, but any other questions were cut off by Danny running back downstairs, a number of different weapons cradled in his arms. "Will any of these work?" he asked, setting them on the floor in a crash.
Jack nodded, and grabbed one from the pile. "This one will work." He dismantled it expertly, and removed a small piece. "If you hook this up to the regulator it should work." He held it out to Tucker, who took it with a nod.
"On it," he said. Tucker worked in tense silence, with Skulker hovering above him, and Jack and Danny a few steps behind. Finally, he wiped the nervous sweat off his brow, and resealed the whole on Skulker's suit. "That should do it. Give it a spin?"
Skulker climbed back into the face hatch, letting it seal around him. The display came to life, and Skulker rose to his fake feet. "It's rather stiff, but nothing that I won't be able to fix!" he said, back  to his regular voice. "I do not believe this is worth a month without hunting, whelp."
"Two weeks and I'll do something nice for Ember," Danny replied smoothly.
"Deal. I will see you in two weeks, ghost child!" he called, and began to make his way to the portal.
"I'll cherish every minute I get to go without seeing your ugly mug," Danny called back. "Seriously, you got to decide how you look and you chose that?"
Skulker's retort was washed away by the whirring of the ghost portal. His departure left Jack, Tucker, and Danny standing in the basement without a possible life threatening situation to mediate the conversation.
"I guess I owe you an explanation," Danny said.
"You do," Jack said. "But it can wait until I've made some fudge. I think we'll need it for this conversation."
