i know tua has generally completely dropped the ball on lore continuity by the end of s4 but one of the inconsistencies that pisses me off most is the technology. season 1 committed hard to an analog 2019, and s2 was in the 60s so it continued it. but in s3 luther mentions the concept of emails in conjuction with a nigerian prince joke and in s4 cryptocurrency exists??? which you could write off as a product of reginald's universe reset EXCEPT they use goddamn rotary phones the whole season sooooooo in conclusion: ?????

i don’t think i’ll ever forgive the writers for what they did to Diego. and i’m not just saying that because he’s one of my top three favorite TUA characters. that man has spent his ENTIRE life trying to be good enough. smart enough etc. he deserved his family. he deserved his children. he DESERVED to watch them grow up. he deserved a better wife (i love lila don’t get me wrong but man😭) a better brother. DIEGO HARGREEVES YOU WERE AN AMAZING MAN!

I rarely make tumblr posts, but I am so infuriated by this situation I need to say something about it.

Five Hargreeves, who spent 45 years alone in a post-apocalyptic world, and every single moment of his life since was spent trying to get back to his family. The Five who ran himself dry for 2 weeks straight trying to stop the end of the world, and reunite his family. The Five who slaughtered an entire board of directors just to ensure him family's safety. Who turned back time himself, while bleeding out on the floor, just to save his siblings. You're telling me, that the Five whose entire motivation for living was once saving his family, is the same Five, who in s4 has entirely given up, and in the Subway is the one trying to convince Lila to stop looking after 6 and a half years? The Five who never once stopped trying to return to his family in all 45 years of surviving alone, decides to settle down in a greenhouse and live out a cottagecore life?

Furthermore, the same Five who told Lila that Diego loved her, who reassured his brother that his wife wasn't cheating on him and loved him dearly, the same Five who got on with Lila only due to the fact that they both cared for and loved Diego, the person they had in common, is the same Five who stole his brother's wife, whom he had three children with, just because the writers were excited that Aidan Gallagher was finally legal?

Five who hated authority, who despised when people gave him commands, who wanted nothing more than to retire in s3, is now working for the CIA and willingly calling his boss, 'sir'?

Five who used to be so paranoid and suspicious of everyone and everything, who used to solve problems alone and came to epiphanies that saved the world, who didn't even trust a past version of himself, also didn't realise that his boss of many years had an umbrella tattooed on his wrist?

Everything that once stood out about his character is now gone, as if the writers themselves entirely forgot about his existence until the last moment, and added him in as an afterthought, without thinking of the effect he would have on the story.

SPOILERS FOR TUA SEASON 4 ❗❗❗

I truly admire the writers' dedication to making up for Luther being the least liked character in the earlier seasons. They rlly said GUYSSS we r soo soo sorry abt the being in love with his sister thing and the imprisoning Viktor thing OKAYY?? Look he's gonna be a himbo now !! He's working as a stripper and dressing as an astronaut OKAY?? He lives in an abandoned house that he decorates with trinkets OKAY?? HE IS LOOKING AT SCONCES IN AN ANTIQUE SHOP GUYSSSS PLEASEEEEE FORGIVEEE USSS !!

i hear “they were stuck on the subway for 7 years alone, what would you expect? of course they fell in love”

can you just do me a favor and try to wrap your head around the fact that writers can literally make whatever they want to happen, happen.

if they want a goddamn pirate ship to crash into the sun and cause another apocalypse they could. would it be stupid? yes. but they could do it.

if they want a giant pterodactyl to bite reginald’s head off and then cause the economy to crash because all of reginald’s money and businesses go under, they could. would it be stupid? yes. but again, they could absolutely do it.

if they want an old man in the body of his nineteen year-old self to get stuck on a subway with his brother’s wife (who he cares about but also sort of hates because she understands him and he’s not used to people understanding him) and fall in love with her after 7 years of hopeless searching, they could.

would it be fucking moronic? you bet. but once again. they could absolutely fucking do it.

and guess what they did!!!!!

could we try our very best to consider that the writers could’ve had five fall in love with literally anyone? that they could’ve brought delores to life (i’m biased, but alas)? that they could’ve introduced literally any other character for him to have a romance with? or that they could’ve remembered that the entire first 3 seasons were familial love stories of five’s caring for his siblings?

could we try our VERY best to remember that both lila AND five were stripped of every one of their character traits to fit into the cookie cutter shapes that would allow them to fall in love?

you say five and lila were perfect for each other, but what you did was you watched two strangers fall in love. that wasn’t five and lila. they were strangers with masks of our favorite characters that netflix deemed acceptable enough to cheap out on.

Rewatching The Umbrella Academy and the very ending of season 2 when they meet the Sparrows, Ben’s hair is down all emo-like. In the first episode of season 3, Ben’s hair is spiked up instead…

Like obviously they shot these scenes are different times. But that’s such a consistency error??

Did they completely forget what Ben looked like even though they got everyone else correct???

Everyone is standing in the same exact positions, same clothes and everything, EXCEPT BEN!

WHY???

Because of this I choose to believe it was purposeful and clueing us into the “fact” that between the seasons, in 1 moment, the Audience’s timeline switched and season 3 and 4 is some completely different universe that we don’t have to worry about! Problem solved!!

But seriously, this inconsistency bothers the hell out of me… am I crazy?

Slowly catching up on a totally Not Pirated version of the umbrella academy cus I dropped it after season 2, currently on episode 8 of season 3. Ben arguing with Diego in Korean and Diego arguing with Ben in Spanish is so funny to me I cannot explain just how much

The last thing Ben ever did in both timelines (umbrella and sparrow ben) was to save Viktor's life at the expense of his own and I think that's beautiful.

And the flashback scene where Viktor was in Ben's room trying on his mask and the fact that Viktor would've been waiting at home for Ben to return from that mission only for him to never come back and never be able to say goodbye and when Viktor gets the chance to save Ben in S4, Ben sacrifices himself for Viktor and Viktor once again never gets the chance to say goodbye. The Fact that the 2 siblings with the most destructive siblings were the quietest and most timid (umbrella ben at least). They are my favourite brothers and I will never forgive them for not giving sparrow Ben a proper goodbye.

the more i think about tua s4 the more it’s like. wow they really just lost steam after the first four episodes huh? like the first four weren’t amazing necessarily, but there was some interesting stuff being set up. i wanted to see what would go on with ben and jennifer, or where the hell five and lila were, or how they would fix some dynamics within the group like between klaus and allison. and i thought gene and jean were kind of good villains, like they were just on the classic tua spectrum of funny, unsettling, and weird. and then it’s like they just didn’t know how to wrap any of it up. like i would fully believe that the ending of the show was not how they meant to conclude it, but they couldn’t think how else to “fix” things in so little time. the five and lila thing i still just really don’t get the purpose of, but it did still feel very rushed and maybe the writers didn’t want to try and figure anything else out about the subway thing they created and five’s new powers being connected to it. and that problem is solved if they have five and lila give up looking (no matter how out of character it is for both of them) and create some lame sibling drama to fill the screen time they could’ve used to explain any of their own world building. not to mention that they then go “oh actually none of it matters anyway because they’re gonna destroy all those timelines and there will just be one real one”- which now that i think about it is another plot hole but that’s another post.

anyway. i guess what i’m trying to say is that some of season 4 was fine. like. the “you’re a good brother” moment from diego to five who looks a little guilty yet touched bc he knows he’s still kind of lying to diego, but he also knows if he were in lila’s position he wouldn’t want his partner to just be told that he’s getting himself into dangerous situations again like that? that’s good. that’s diego, lila, and five’s dynamic right there. lila thinking it’s absolutely hilarious that diego would ever think she’s cheating on him with five? that works, because it is ridiculous. and lila and five both sneaking into the keepers meetings at the start was very in-character for both of them as well. they’re the two former commission agents who get bored with normal life very easily (another reason it makes no sense to have them settle down with each other, lmao). it’s like they understood the three of them decently well before the fifth episode, and when it started they just kind of lost the plot. so i personally will just be ignoring the last two episodes. diego and five love each other even if they are both very grumpy sometimes. and diego and lila still have communication problems but they also are never going to leave each other (and hey, even david castañeda understood that). and then five and lila are commission frenemies who on some level still can’t stand each other but also know they need to work together a lot of the time. and i’m sure they and the rest of the umbrellas figure everything out and stop the fourth apocalypse and live happily ever after. the end.

I was thinking here about another ending for season 4.

Viktor, Allison, Luther, Diego and Klaus get killed. Five survives. Instead of messing with the time again and trying to stop the Apocalypse, he lets himself be killed. The Hargreeves siblings appear in their young bodies when they were kids. They are laughing , playing around in the Academy and interacting with each other. Grace and Ben are also there with them. All of the siblings' ghosts/spirits are only having fun, without their memories. They are having just a normal life, only being kids forever with their real names. Five still has his name. It also could have had scenes with the hargreeves kids playing around the Academy (in heaven) with the destruction of the place.

Lila survived with some people. She ends up taking care of her children and Allison's daughter.
