Oh mighty little Mouse, a small narrow gauge engine designed and crafted with clever hands and loving hearts of a handful of Irish miners.
Mouse is a beloved hodgepodge of the Slaught mines. She was made from necessity and many spare parts by the men but was quickly revered and adored. She had proven herself nothing short but truly useful.
Though all goods things come to an end when their overseer informs the men that she will have to be rid of as they bought a “proper engine”. Sean, the mind behind her design, took her away to Sodor and left her there knowing she will be safe.
A new adventure begins for the little “Mighty” Mouse.

As the day wore on, the cool late-autumn weather drew across the island. As Edward puffed back into his station, he found it was empty, and there were no trains for a while.
"Good!" Said the driver, "Once we finish tidying the yard, we can have a good lunch break before we leave out again."
So after a great deal of shunting, they parked Edward in a siding, damped his fire, sheeted him snug with a large tarp like a cloak, and promised to be back as soon as they were done.
Edward, simmering nicely, was about to drift off for a snooze, when suddenly, he found he had some surprise visitors. A bird was perched on his buffer, and two squirrels and even a rabbit had clambered onto his footplate.
"Why hello there!" he greeted warmly. The little animals twittered as they nestled under the cloak and his warm boiler.
The old engine smiled. "Well, you lot are more than welcome to stay before I have to leave for my next train," he said, and so they did, as he rested peacefully.
@avaford2009 requested me to draw Edward wearing a hooded cape cloak, talking to some animal friends, rather unexpected for my first ask! After searching account for a bit more context, I figured it was to be Edward as a human, but I ultimately went with him as an engine as that was easier to work with, so my deepest apologies! As for the animals, I decided to go with the ones from the S15 episode, Percy's New Friends, not a good episode obviously, but I suppose it's a smidge more tolerable than other particular episodes from the likes of the Nitrogen era. Anyway, that's what got me a little more creative as I came up with the cute little snippet story, hopefully I can write longer stories and post them here at some point. Enjoy!

[1968]
Henry grimaced as he felt the steam pressure quickly vacating his system. He supposed he couldn’t make fun of Gordon’s incident with his safety valve anymore.
It wasn’t long before he heard a familiar growl approaching. The railway’s newest diesel engine, Bear, came rumbling up alongside with a supportive hoot.
“Heard from the stationmaster someone needed a rescue?” The Hymeck smiled.
Henry rolled his eyes, but found himself fighting down a smirk of his own. “Yeah, my safety valve gave out on me. What a place for it, huh?”
“Well, could be worse.” Bear replied, frankly. “You could’ve stopped in a tunnel, or-” He froze, as Henry grimaced. “I- I mean uh, you’d be letting off a lot of steam, and uh… and it probably wouldn’t have anywhere to go, um…”
Bear winced again, well aware he was doing very little to fix his slip-up.
“Genuinely, that wasn’t meant to be a jab at… y’know, the-”
“From you, it’s fine.” Henry interrupted. “You’re not Gordon or Percy about it. You can be blunt and outspoken at times, but you’re not malicious.”
The big green diesel managed a tentative smile.
“A-at any rate, we should probably get you moving.”
“Yeah, can’t be holding up the main line like this.”

Recently learned that all American engines used to be fitted with bells, so I thought it would be cool if Sparks used to have a bell before coming to Sodor. 🚂
She no longer has this bell, since it was given to one of her old colleagues before they went to live a new life somewhere else.
The reason why Sparks’ bell was taken from her was because most of her old railway assumed she wasn’t going to make it like the others.
This was due to the fact that she was the smallest amongst her colleagues, so they assumed the weakest one wasn’t going to work again, or be saved and preserved.

ok question how and why was the scrapping of sentence vhecials even allowed in the first place I mean sure irl this isn't that bad but in ttte the mass scrapping of steam engines in the 60s in Britain might as well be considered a genocide did Brittish railways use every loophole and excuse in the book to do this and every other country for that matter
Thank you for your ask! And wow does it open up some cans of worms...
But before we get to in-canon reasons for why BR was able to mass-scrap steam engines, we should probably consider the author's intent behind writing this in - after all, the Reverend W. Awdry was writing a children's book series and went "ah yes, I want this to be a picture children see":
Tumblr media
So why does Awdry allow for scrap to happen? Because it happened in real life. Awdry was a massive steam engine fan - he grew up on the Great Western mainline near Box Tunnel listening to engines working up and down the grade, his father was a steam fan, and he himself volunteered on various heritage railways (most notably the Talyllyn in Wales) - this is a man who loves his railways and his steam engines. But in the era he was writing - the 1950s and 1960s - the engines were rapidly withdrawn and scrapped as part of BR's Modernisation Plan. Awdry hated this - Britain was scrapping completely useful engines who had served the country through two global wars for untested, faulty diesels that smelt. If you read through the Forewards from Four Little Engines onwards, you can sometimes find that he is quietly advertising heritage railways by crediting them and telling his audience where the real-live versions of the steam engines in his books are. He does this for the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, the Dartmouth Railway, the Ffestiniog Railway and of course: the Talyllyn and Bluebell Railways.
Awdry's books were as much a love letter to steam as they were a series of children's stories, and he wanted to make a real point about how he disagreed with BR and try to promote heritage railways to help keep steam alive.
Rev. W. Awdry was also a notorious perfectionist. Remember, this is a man who said that Dalby's illustrations of Percy looked like "a green caterpillar with red stripes" (ouch!).
Tumblr media
This perfectionism carried over to the books: Awdry is very famous for his views on realism in Thomas - he quite famously disliked the Season 3 episode 'Henry's Forest' because it both broke Rule 55 - which states that engineers need to notify the signalman that their trains are at a stand in order to avoid an accident - and the fact that the trees were too close to the line, which could have caused a fire from sparks from the engine in real life. He placed real railway practice and its constraints at the forefront of his stories, and it shows.
Mixed together, these two parts of Awdry created the situation where he wrote about the scrapping of engines and the existential danger that it posed to steam engines and their livelihoods. This is the authorial reasoning behind scrap and the mass-scrapping of steam engines being so prevalent in his works - and it is prevalent, from as early as the first story where Edward is bullied by the bigger engines for being used so little and the implicit likelihood that he could be withdrawn and cut up.
Tumblr media
With the authorial reasons for the mass-scrapping of steam engines having been answered, it is now a question of how to drill down into canon and explain what these views and decisions made by Awdry translate into.
Firstly, we need to separate two things: sentience, and human. Vehicles are not people in this series - they are very much the closest thing in terms of intelligence and speech ability, but they are not human. They are built out of minerals pulled from in the ground and powered by more rocks dug up from underground. Whether or not you see this as making this a society that enslaves the engines or not, the reality is that they are machines and the property of their human owners. This is a lot like horses - horses love us, even though we own them, and we often love them back. But not always. Horses were and are, after all, animals used for jobs - in their heyday, they were the car, bus, tram and train of society. We bought and sold them, and when they were no longer useful, people often put them down. Which is extremely morbid, yes - but it's an unfortunately necessary fact of that era and their lives.
Now translate it over to locomotives - the iron horses.
Tumblr media
Locomotives are built to serve a purpose, and they must be capable of fulfilling their role. They are taking on the position of the horse from the above analogy - and when they are no longer useful, they can either be sold or scrapped. Worse yet, they are the industrial evolution to the horse - the capitalist's beast of burden.
And now I can finally move to answer the question of why the mass-scrapping of engines was legal: there was never any laws to stop them. From the moment the first engine rolled out of the shop, their owners argued loudly and publicly that they were simply an evolution of the horse. If people didn't give horses rights, why give engines rights? They are not human; they are iron beasts of burden. And in the rigid and very xenophobic society of the Victorian era, this worked incredibly well. Engines were trained using the Railway Rulebook to fulfill their job in much the same way you trained anyone and anything to be good at their job, and their culture was dismissed in the same way that Victorians dismissed any non-European culture.
Now, don't misunderstand me - this is not a good thing. This is a laissez-faire system of caring for vehicle rights developed by capitalism to make it cheaper, easier and less objectionable to discard old stock when needed. The government never intervened because doing so would place all the vehicles under their control under scrutiny. Can't have military lorries and tanks suddenly wondering whether or not their roles in war are legal, after all. And it's that worry that led to no nation really looking into vehicle laws until after World War Two - and even then, it was haphazard at best and downright discriminatory at worst. Even today, there are still no solid laws in place to cover the vast majority of vehicles - only those held in museums owned by the government or 'considered to be of cultural or historic importance' are afforded any rights at all - Thomas, Flying Scotsman, Stephenson's Rocket - those engines.
Tumblr media
It's not because the engines themselves don't care, but because they simply have no real option to change this. Engines cannot move themselves - the worst they can do is force themselves to break down, and there will almost always be another engine to take their place.
Sorry for how morbid that got, but I hope it helped explain why I think engines were allowed to be mass-scrapped by BR!

Ttte AU Fan kids Part 2
Ok so guess the ship part two. Although the last one only her dad is cannon, her mum was an oc/npc/random BR Class 37.
Tumblr media
Top to Bottom:
Lillie: She is the first-born NG on Sodor. The other NG's call her Princess when she's up at the BMQ. She is always looking for something new to do, or a riot to cause.
Mark: "He's much smaller than any of the others I've had..."-Marion. Mark is easy going and generally quiet, unless you start talking about dinosaurs; then he can talk for hours.
Treasure and Neptune: Treasure is at this point non-verbal; she much prefers to stay beside her mum or dad. Neptune on the other hand wants to go explore and live the life of adventure. Why tell stories when you can live them?
Wish: She was born on the mainland under the BR, but when her mum passed her dad had to find someone to help. Being a Class 37, her engine sound often confuses others... Even Terance thought she was a tractor.

TTTE Headcanons: Engines’ TV Habits
This is pretty goofy, but I’m thinking about what sorts of TV the engines might watch if they had a TV or a streaming device in their sheds. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far!
—————————————
Henry loves nature shows, of course. In addition, after his fireman lamented his spilt hot cocoa, he wanted to understand why humans care so much about food. This led him to cooking shows, which he found very relaxing. He likes to watch raw, disparate ingredients become something beautiful and complete.
Edward goes for mysteries — lighter, cozier shows like Midsomer Murders, Rosemary & Thyme, and Murder, She Wrote. He’s also a fan of Granada Studios’ 1984 Sherlock Holmes. It tickles the same part of him that enjoys ghost stories, giving him a slight thrill alongside a pleasing mind-teaser.
Gordon watches the news every morning and evening. He likes to feel up-to-date on important events, expounding on them to his colleagues. Any program about opera and orchestral performances also appeals to him. There’s some snobbery involved, but he does enjoy hearing and learning about musical genres.
James likes game and talent shows, often shouting answers and opinions at the TV. He’s so attuned to these shows’ editing that he’ll guess a season winner, set up a betting pool, and rake in all the favors after the finale with a smug grin. (Gordon and Henry only keep placing bets because they want to show him up someday.)
All three big engines indulge in the guilty pleasure of soap operas. They think nobody else knows about this. Pip and Emma “obliviously” intrude on their watch parties to make them squirm.
Thomas and Percy watch ghost hunting shows together. They scoff at the idea of ghosts, accuse each other of being ‘fraidy-cats, and huddle close in fear as an episode progresses. They also watch late-night airings of schlocky films with Toby, whose sly commentary cracks them all up.
On his own, Thomas watches motorsport broadcasts. Bertie hooked him on it not long after they started racing each other. He’s a fan of some F1 drivers and their cars, often comparing notes with Bertie in serious (and sometimes heated) discussions.
Percy has a soft spot for period dramas. He’ll laugh at historical inaccuracies, get invested in all the characters, and ponder common tropes. He’s not afraid to ask about the servants who have to endure the wealthy protagonists’ dramatics.
Toby doesn’t watch much TV outside of what he sees with Thomas and Percy. However, he and Henrietta are partial to some late-night talk shows. If the show’s interviewing someone they’re interested in, or if they think the host is funny, they’ll give an episode a try.
Duck adores How It’s Made. It’s very satisfying for him to watch a bunch of moving parts at work, slotting pieces into their rightful places to assemble something. Other nights, he watches travel shows. They explore locations all around the world, scratching his itch to see what’s beyond his horizon.
Donald watches stand-up comedy specials, going for a good laugh at the end of the day to decompress. Ever since Duck “gifted” him Dilly, he also watches nature programs and shows about training/caring for pets. (He and Dilly are working on some tricks.)
Oliver picks sci-fi shows, with Star Trek and Doctor Who as his favorites. He’s drawn in by the pulpy adventures, moral dilemmas, and complex protagonists. It all makes him feel better about himself: you can mess up on an astronomical scale, but still be capable of good things. You don’t have to be a perfect hero to be a good person.
Douglas enjoys shows about antiques and vintage items — things in the vein of Antique Roadshow, or American Pickers. He’s a sucker for knickknacks that meant something to someone, for all the stories behind each one, and for their loving restorations.
Bill and Ben think fitness shows are hysterical. They’re forever amused by the odd ways the instructors contort their bodies. But they also scheme for their crews to watch these shows, hoping they’ll participate and stay healthy for years to come.
Daisy’ll watch any program about fashion or body art (tattoos, piercings, etc). Being so attentive to her swerves, she’s curious about the ways that humans adorn themselves. She’ll sometimes take inspiration from what she sees, but she’ll always argue that fashion is an art form, pointing to these shows for examples.

@verypsbfan019 gotta love it when two people ruin not only each other’s lives in some sort of twisted codependency but also everyone else’s
(a bit of comment under the cut)
now that I’ve caught up with the last part of the hawin lake saga, I must say that woah! despite its (minor) flaws this could be the best ttte horror fanfilm I’ve ever watched....! I’d like to give a few comments
I’ve watched the first four parts of the saga months ago so seeing this hour-long finale not only tell a story but also tie everything together - from dane and hawin’s relationship to the accidents in series 5 - is quite satisfying. part I-III built up the feeling of something amiss, part IV introduced the main antagonist, and part V revealed every single important thing the audience needs to know.
we get to see dane and hawin’s backstory when dane was still alive, the reveal that hawin isn’t as innocent as he is and that dane isn’t "purely evil”. the author did a good job giving dane and hawin depth and making certain characters in the story die not just for shock value, but also show how much of a force dane is. there’s always this feeling of unease whenever he’s around instead of making you go “oh great, not this guy again”
I also like to note that at the beginning of part V, dane was revealed to be 1020 without an exposition of some sort, but by using the camera angle to show the number on his tender just as he’s leaving his shed. it’s also worth noting that the paintwork on dane is rather more shoddy and jaded compared to that of hawin’s, putting in more weight to their conversation later on about how dane feels jaded and believed that hawin was merely there just to replace him.
also technically dane gets to talk in part IV but I like how the direction the voice acting of dane went. most villains in ttte fan films are either full on demonic sounding with gurgling sounds or edgily maniacal and full of laughter. but dane's voice is soft, tender, yet I can feel the absolute vitriol and sadness he has for hawin. dane, especially when talking to hawin, sounds so heartbroken and betrayed, so angry and vengeful. in a way, his voice humanizes him yet makes him feel more threatening. a person who is calm is harder to read compared to a person who is very open about their emotions. it also fits him very very well. he has always been a soft spoken individual when he was still alive, so it makes sense that he still talks like that even when he’s angry.
though I must say that the end scene where hawin sacrifices himself to calm dane down is a tiny bit anticlimatic and some parts like the jumpscares are questionable in terms of whether they’re really necessary.
it's been a while since I genuinely liked a ttte fanfilm villain. overall, it’s a great series, and part V, railspin splitspace, is a great end to a saga. 8.7/10

Since today marks the 40th anniversary of thomas and friends (the show) I'd like to share personal story.
Tumblr media
I first got into thomas when i was a little girl. I wasn't scared of the sudden closeups on the characters faces, or the crashes or the unmoving expressions. It was quite the opposite, i was fascinated. There was something about the vibe that drew me in. It wasnt a cartoon but it wasn't realistic either. The characters didnt have traditional voice actors yet they had a personality and charm that made me eant to see what will these guys do next.
We had tapes of the Alec Baldwin and George Carlin narrations, I used to play Make Some Happy on Repeat. I think i still have it, it's in storage and i hope to burn in onto a disc one day.
I was surprised when the show transitioned to CGI. But i still wasn't entirely against it. If anything i wanted to see where it would go. I was pleased when the show finally had dofferent VAs for the characters. Narration was great and all but i loved the idea of the guys having their own VAs and got a little tired of the female characters sounding the same. Eve. When the show started to get bad, even during the Dharon Miller era, i still got my ass up as 7 am in the morning to watch episodes on pbs kids every Sunday. I didn't care. I just liked watching colorful trains and loved seeing new characters and locations.
Thomas gotten me through some pretty rough patches in childhood, and I had a lot. It showed me a world where problems can be eaisly fixed and mistakes arent the end of the world. It taught me it was okay to ask for help, that i shouldn't tackle everything by myself. Now, you might be surprised giving i tend to criticize a lot of stuff but I am also someone who embraces change. In a way, the shoes ups and down taught me sometimes you just have ti acceot everything will not be exactly the same as you want.
It's this mindset that's currently helping me through another rough time. I admit, i was too hard all all Engins go, but watching some if the episodes I came to actually like some of it. Thought it probably helped that i got turned off by the massive backlash, I felt other fans were too harsh to the point of bein downright gross. I don't want to be like them. So i had to let go of that anger and see the positive AEG has. Ironically it was this specific incarnation that really got me into drawing fanart, which was how i came up for my Shining Time Station reboot.
Without thomas, i wouldn't have met my friends. I wouldn't have gotten back into art, since i have drawn some ttte art and even rewriting the magic railroad. Speaking of, TATMR got me into fantasy, I remmberthe first time I watched it was on HBO kids and was intrigued because it literally never referenced in the shoe and i didnt grow up with Shining Time. For all its faults I still enjoy the movie. I'm even making a custom ken doll of Junior conductor. I credit thomas for helping me find my true love with Junior, i dont care if he's fictional, he's my f/o and I care about him greatly.
As for the blue man himself, I relate to thomas a lot. We're both bossy and tempered, but we're also friendly and hardworking. We slip up and pick ourselves back up. I guess, seeing thomas handling failure has gotten me to reconsider how I've been viewing life and needing yo stop defining myself on my faults. He's flawed yet still likable and beloved, so maybe, I can have a chance too.
I used to think the color blue is overrated, moresore than pink, but thanks to rediscovering Thomas, I now admit I love the color blue. It reminds me of thomas and how i should work on improving myself and my worldviews.
So, thank you thomas and friends. Thank you for being in my childhood and reminding me Adulthood should'nt have to be a cesspool of misery. I can't wait to see what the next 40 years would bring!

That is just adorable!
It's lovely you've got that little momento still, it's one of those things to hang onto for sure!
He must have known right away.
Some small eggs in this house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wonder how it was decided who would be on what pieces in this collection.
Everyone was probably really proud of getting their likenesses smacked onto plates, saucers and cups.
The company managed to capture some of the railway's best engines in fine detail.
Henry was rarely ever impressed with the whole Thomas merch craze.
"Bloody capitalism, that's what it is."
But upon seeing how we he'd turned out on his little dinner plate, even he was won over.
"Well, it doesn't look THAT bad I suppose, they'd better not put food over me."
James was put on a bowl.
"Centerpiece naturally!" He beamed.
Toby was put on a cup.
"Ought to be a mug I reckon, get it guys? TOBY mug?" He said, looking around at the deadened faces.
At least Thomas laughed.
Unfortunately Edward was a little late during the whole decision process, but the Fat Controller knew there would be one piece left that nobody would ever pick.
"It's not the biggest piece in the set by any means, but it's still part of a balanced breakfast." He chuckled.
"You always were a good egg!"

Hi Jobey, hope everything is going well!
What's your opinion on AEG? For me frankly, the weird cartoon physics, bright colours and my strong childhood memories of and love for the model series make it impossible for me to watch, it just feels wrong for me.
Also, for better or for worse (in my case, the latter) AEG got a hold of our boi Donnie 😭
I love cartoon physics, they're very funny for kids and I think the genre's not a bad fit for an iteration of TTTE. Wilbert Awdry himself dug his Tom and Jerry cartoons lol, and sometimes you can really see the influence. I expect the next generation of TTTE fans will look back on this series very fondly, and we old fogies are just going to have to accept that or else go shout at some clouds.
I don't like the babyfaces at all (Thomas's is particularly punchable), but then again "the faces are too weird for me" has been every non-fan's criticism of every portrayal of the characters ever since 1945. Kinda how it goes. If you like the stories well enough, you'll learn to like the faces.
It seemed to me (as someone who never actually watched AEG) that the true sin of AEG is the severance of the TTTE universe from a recognizably Real World, with Real Jobs, and Real Stakes. RWS/TTTE is about community and service and, crucially, trains. It's not about 🌈i m a g i n a t i o n 🌈 and it's really irritating how tv execs keep trying to shoehorn that in.
All this is to say... I didn't know Donald and Douglas had been roped into AEG yet until you sent this ask!

So, about Derek Smith's video on the long canceled 2010 ttte movie
Today I stumbled upon and watched mr. Smith's video on 'The adventures of Thomas' - the ttte movie that was canceled, but almost happened. In that video Derek reveled the first draft of the plot for TAOT with Josh Klausner's consent, witch reveled something that can be considered a 'relapse of TATMR' as TheUnluckyTug had put it. Almost all of the comments on the video were like 'We've dogged a bullet/nuclear bomb' or 'We own TATMR an apology', or 'We were robbed, but I'm secretly glad we didn't got it', or some forth thing.
Now, if you're gonna ask me, I may get hated for this - but I honestly love this concept and draft, but I also like to for it be more worked on, so it won't be a mess like how most fans see the draft plot. The plot, the ideas, albeit not faithful to Audrey's stories, were intriguing. The designs and new characters were actually good, even if the robot like faces look off putting. This could also work as something separate from ttte, but I honestly see the potential to be a different timeline from the one we're used to.
We could've had a pretty sick steampunk inspired ttte movie set in the second world war. We could've been introduced to the big and fearsome diesel Smoke. We could've gotten french rebellious coal carts. We could've had Squeak the handcar.
We were robbed of something truly incredible and I wish we've got it.
OH -
The lost POTENTIAL OF THIS FILM -
There are two hands of what we could've gotten :
