it's a stroke of sheer luck that could only come about because of who's there. thymilph is distracted just the slightest bit when trying to attack kamina, mazinger or getter-1 lunge at the perfect time, big o manages to halt viral in his tracks, shinkiro slows thymilph down just enough--

the spear still pierces the cockpit. kamina screams, simon believes it's fatal for a brief moment, but then kamina gets back up.

thymilph goes down to giga drill break. just as before. the team holds their breath...

it's one of the super robot pilots who reach kamina first. maybe banjou or ryoma. kamina still stands--well, sits, really. one of his arms dangles, useless--it's almost been severed at the elbow. he's barely conscious.

but despite everything, kamina lives.

Yomi no Tsugai is almost three years old, so it's time to at least dream of an anime adaptation. So, I tried to think of who I hear when I read the manga, and came up with this list. I tried to provide video examples, but, sadly, not every seiyuu has a "{name} roles compilation" video. Also, some videos are hyperlinked because of tumblr's 10-videos-per-post limit.

Under the cut is the part of the main cast I could come up with voices for. Warning: the fact that I have only seen like three anime (is it comical exaggeration? who knows) is even more glaringly obvious here.

aaaand i'll have to repeat because this is the piss on the poor website: there's no news about the anime yet! no one is talking about it officially at the moment! it's my dream cast! who i personally imagine when i read! you absolutely can and should disagree with me and maybe share who you would like to hear as who!

Yuru IMHO, he should be voiced by male seiyuu. For example, Takeo Ootsuka (the closest to what I imagine is Oshi no Ko's Aqua).

Asa (real) Her seiyuu should be able to switch between two modes: the "cold and ruthless" mode and the "sweet teenage girl" mode, and her voice should be relatively deep. I can hear someone like Mizuki Nana (FMAB's Lan Fan, Uramichi Oniisan's Utano Tadano). I mean, Lan Fan has both of these sides.

Asa (fake) She is a sweet girl like 100% of the time, and Saori Hayami's voice (Spy x Family's Yor, Majo to Yajuu's Phanora) would fit her perfectly.

Danji (and Ken) I hear each of these guys' lines in either Megumi Ogata's voice (Shinji from NGE, Hanako from Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun), or Maaya Sakamoto's (Ciel from Black Butler, Haruhi from OHSHC). I'd say, Danji's voice in my head is closer to Shinji's.

Gab Her voice should be high-pitched. Rie Kugumiya (do I even need to) maybe? Definitely not her Al voice, but closer to her Kagura Gintama five years later voice. steal one of the brothers' look, steal the other's voice :D

Left She probably should have the deepest voice compared to the rest of the female cast. I'd probably choose someone like Romi Paku (but not her Ed Elric voice; her Kill la Kill's Ragyou Kiryuuin or Black Butler's Madam Red voice. Or something in between; god, this woman's vocal range...).

I also thought about Shouko Tsuda (Izumi from FMA and FMAB; Martha from Spy x Family), but couldn't find a video.

Right Someone like Rikiya Koyama (Lum's father from Urusei Yatsura 2022, Neptune Shoukaku from Gintama (beware of spoilers in this example). He should sound like one of these two characters, not like, for example, Fukuzawa BSD <- unbelievable that these three have the same seiyuu).

Dera Sugita Tomokazu. Is it because he voiced Gintoki, another morally dubious badass fighter guy who sees a kid, asks "who's gonna adopt them" and doesn't wait for an answer, and then goes to spend all of his money on gambling? Maybe. Oh, he's also voiced Kyon from Haruhi Suzumiya and Joseph Joestar. (god, his voice is too recognizable)

Hana Satsuki Yukino (FMAB!Rosé, Tae from Gintama, Kagome from InuYasha). Yes, it's because of Tae. Both Tae and Hana are 1) pretty (and) dangerous, and 2) the best girls of their respective manga. Also, her voice just fits. Another option would be Marina Inoue (TTGL's Yoko Littner, Gintama's Ikeda Asaemon, SZS's Kitsu Chiri <- another best girl, what an unbelievable coincidence)

Jin His voice should be deep, that's what I'm certain of. He also should sound like he's permanently very, very, very tired of everything. I think of someone like Hosoya Yoshimasa (Kunikida BSD, Reiner AOT). The videoo with examples does not provide any example of tiredness, but does provide an example of a deep voice.

Sep/2018 & Jan/2019 → July/2023

Art style evolved since 2018, and with this some design quirks on them as well. Instead of making a separate post for each of them… I will post them together, since they were planned to be a “trio of misfits”.

First rough idea was “I need to make a new character to fill the Fragment of Light” in my DigiTimeLines project. Soleil came first, as the mysterious yet suspicious vessel for “Homeostasis” – which was my trying to work with ▽ back in time until i decided this wouldn’t work with Adv/02 lore and started to just plot new ideas based on  ▽ concepts. So, this “Homeostasis” who keeps in touch with Soleil? Might not be the real one. I won’t spoil stuff in-progress sorry.

Soleil was inspired by a Kamen Rider Fourze character (you can notice it by the space naming + the “uniform”) – Sakuta Ryuusei/Kamen Rider Meteor, which is one of my favorite secondary Riders in the entire franchise. I’m not spoiling Fourze, but if you watched it you’ll notice the similarities soon. Besides Ryuusei, I also got driven back into Xros Wars Hunters arc and got some inspiration from Mogami Ryouma for his classy and smug style. I think if Soleil had a voice actor… It would probably be shared with Ryouma’s – because I like this character and enjoyed his VA in Hunters (who’s also Simon from TTGL). Ah, the Detective Ichijouji blog-and-story Soleil has aged up a little more – So he’s not a 14yo there!!

As for Lune… She came later in the same month. She was supposed to be the “psychic girl” with the Fragment of Energy and be Soleil’s ally-and-best-friend. Her design was inspired by another Fourze character, Nadeshiko/Kamen Rider Nadeshiko. Despite the appearance being quite inspired by Nadeshiko… Her personality is… not much. She could’ve gotten Amano Nene’s vibes more often – she’s a mysterious girl, yet she advocates for pacific methods and found interesting Daichi’s ways to challenge Soleil-and-”Homeo” justice. Besides that, she… She doesn’t like to cross the line, and this is why she’s the only person (besides Étoile) who can stop Soleil from going off the rails. But she has her own issues too!! She only follows what she thinks is right and correct. 

Étoile was the last, and his entire existence is a SPOILER for both projects featuring him. Despite using male pronouns, Étoile is enby and it might make sense once you learn more about him. His design is based on a Beyblade character whose name I only know by “Kenny”. He’s also paired with a Pokomon/Viximon subspecies, and its name is Renard.

Ah, the Detective Ichijouji blog-and-story Soleil has aged up a little more – So they’re not their original ages there!!

(btw their space French-like codenames are not their surnames.)

I read a buncha stuff and it’s only been increasing over time and I like yapping about it so gonna start making a post like this every sunday (jump day) so I can dump all my thoughts for the week, stuff is in the order I read it in (best stuff last for the stuff that comes out on sunday), tho sometimes something will be at the top if I did a big catch up or there’s a new series obviously there’s gonna be spoilers under cut sometimes tho not like I expect anyone to actually read these but and sometimes I don’t have much to say about stuff but yeah. tho since this is the first it’s mostly just my overall opinion on them (especially the jump stuff) if something isn’t on here it’s cause I’m either not reading it, or not caught up yet (most likely the latter)

Dandadan Ch94

I was very unsure about dandadan in the first chap cause it made me a bit uncomfortable but it’s actually really good. it’s stupid how incredibly good the art is for a weekly series. it’s currently trucking along a training arc, so not much happened, but all that talk about spirals got my ttgl loving ass very interested in what okarun gonna do in the future

Jojo: The Hol Horse/Josuke spinoff Ch13

I actually started reading this right after I finished P8 cause “well it’s more jojo and there’s only like 11 chaps so not gonna take that long to catch up anyway” and it’s p decent for not being written by araki. as for this chap, ryoko finally saw kakyoin so it’s gonna end sooner than later, tho I obviously never expected it to be that long only 2 or 3 vols, tho I gotta say I’ve really enjoy the characterization they gave dio and showing him recruit his goons from part 3

One Punch Man Ch177

OPM is one of my favourite manga ever so I don’t think there’s much else for me to say. saitama fighting tatsumaki has been very pog, excited to continue seeing this fight, I love tatsumaki so all these recent chaps have been a treat, especially that panel in 176 where saitama squishes her against his chest OOF

Tokyo Underworld Ch32

it’s like an isekai gory survival game,it’s nothing to write home about but it’s also not bad enough to drop and I love danganronpa so I thought it could scratch that itch (it didn’t but oh well). as for the chap, I thought having leonidas and jeanne to go up against was already bad enough for the protags but now cao cao showed up too so good luck to them

Choujin X Ch35

the newest manga from tokyo ghoul’s author, chapters come out when they’re ready and sometimes they’re crazy long cause of that. it’s kinda hard to keep track of cause of that, and cause it’s ishida too lol, but it isn’t bad at all. this chap came after a 4 parter chapter, and it’s a 59 page one, calm down ishida. a big time skip huh? certainly didn’t expect it, chap was mostly the aftermath of the previous battle and then a fastforward in time to where we are now the final shot was cool tho 

PPPPPP Ch70 (Finale)

from the start I never liked the art and never cared about any of the characters. I used to have it at a 5 but I bumped it down to 4 cause I didn’t care about the ending either, especially the rushing to “resolve” the other brothers’ stories in the last few chaps which even ignored some of them. the story was ok at best but way too confusing and hard to follow at some points, even if you didn’t read it weekly but all back to back. all the performances looked cool at least

Ichigoki’s Under Control!! Ch12

it’s a gag manga so it really depends on your sense of humour, but I think it’s really bad, and most people seem too since it always places so low in the rankings. last chap had a huge timeskip so hopefully it’s ending soon. 

The Ichinose Family's Deadly Sins Ch14

another one I haven’t liked since the start. it’s way too edgy for my taste, recently it’s moved on from being edgy for the sake of it and actually doing stuff, but it also feels like it’ll end soon so I’m thankful for that. it has some cool panel composition sometimes tho

Ginka & Glüna Ch23

while the art, especially the action, is good looking most of the time the rest of the manga doesn’t really do anything special and it’s gonna get axed sooner than later so rip to the author

Fabricant 100 Ch11

another one that’ll prob get axed soon. the art isn’t bad, reminds me of fma tbh, but it’s p boring since the mc’s sidekick is so much more powerful than the enemies, the arc from the last few chaps was a bit more interesting and today’s chap wasn’t bad but still not enough to save it I think.

Jiangshi X Ch6

the art’s good but it has felt pretty generic so far, tho today’s chapter moved the plot along a bit so we’ll see, this isn’t on the jump mag so no risk of it getting axed too soon like some other stuff

Tokyo Demon Bride Story Ch24

it’s a shame that’s it getting axed soon instead of one of the 4 I mentioned before. the art’s great, all the designs are fun and the charas are likeable

Cipher Academy Ch13

the nisio series, which I always joke about being rough for the translator, that actually made the current translator quit lmao. while it’s not a series for everyone it’s doing alright in rankings so I hope it sticks around for a good while, I always enjoy getting some nisio stuff when it’s possible. today’s chap had a neat development too

I was actually very unsure of blue box when I started it cause if feels so shoujo-y but I actually ended up really liking it a lot and I’m invested in taiki and natsu. today’s chap was incredible too oh my god 

Mashle Ch145

it’s getting an anime in april! and it’s prob gonna adapt the whole manga cause it’ll end soon! it starts off as a comedy manga making fun of “magic school” series but it eventually becomes a very pog battle manga, while still retain some of it’s comedy. it’s currently on the battle against the final villain so not much more left.

The Elusive Samurai Ch99

Matsui’s 3rd series and 3rd hit wao! it’s only a matter of time til it gets an anime too so that’s an incredible track record for him. it’s a period piece with matsui’s usual flair to it, the art is very good, especially some of the more detailed panels he pulls off sometimes. today introduced some new characters and set up the mcs to get some power ups next chap, the big 100, so that was fun

Sakamoto Days Ch108

one of the best things on jump rn and probably getting an anime announcement sometimes this year. I like to describe it as “anime john wick”. the fight coreography, set pieces and everything is just some of the best in any manga, not even just now but that I’ve read ever. really hope it gets picked up by a studio that doesn’t half ass it cause it deserves the love.

Akane-banashi Ch51

currently my favourite series in jump by a long shot!! it’s crazy too cause when it started I was like “eh how are they gonna pull off a manga about rakugo”but they did, oh boy did they. it got recommendations from both oda AND anno on vol 1 and 2 so you know it’s something special. please read it if you haven’t yet. today’s chap was very good as usual, it was the backstory of akane’s main rival

Ayakashi Triangle Ch121

yabuki’s, of TLR fame, newest series, it doesn’t have as many lewd moments but it has more action to make up for it. I really enjoy it at lot but ofc I do it’s yabuki how could I not, his art is just a treat to look at and he knows how to make entertaining manga

I recently finished watching Space Runaway Ideon (1980) and movies, and that most certainly lived up to its reputation as one of the shows of all time. I’ve been thinking about it for the last week, and some of my thoughts follow. Spoilers, obviously, abound.

- Anyone who tells you to skip the last episode and skip to the second movie should not be trusted. The first movie’s a bit of a mess, for sure, but it re-contextualizes the first two cours in a way that leads in really well to the second movie. And the second movie, if you watch the last episode beforehand, you know when the original series ends so you can brace yourself for when shit REALLY starts going down.

- Also if you watch the last episode, you can notice how the animation gets substantially better once the TV content ends and the new movie content begins. Not that Ideon’s animation is bad, it looks great, but the movie stuff looks much more crisp.

- The rest of the second movie is fascinating for a lot of reasons but also because it’s a clip show for episodes that never actually came to fruition, and the manic pacing lends itself extremely well to how completely miserable the film is.

- The Buff Clan is the least subtle criticism of the Japanese military during WWII imaginable, down to the Emperor being just kinda there and having one line.

- Gije’s journey from just another named samurai looking to prove himself, to proto-Viral from TTGL, to being possibly the only bitch in the whole show who dies content, is really something.

- I didn’t expect to be grabbed so much by Sheryl’s arc. From “kind of a bitch” to falling for a former enemy and finally opening up only to end up so totally broken she throws a baby in the line of fire. And yet, what would be abhorrent anywhere else, is understandable and even pitiable here.

- Jordan Bes is a good dude. Went through hell several times over and still kept everyone together somehow. When did he find the time to have sex?

- Karala and Sheryl are totally hatefucking in the first cour. Also, Hatari and Joliver are totally dating, if you ask me.

- I like Cosmo and Kasha but neither of them feel quite as developed as you’d expect by the end of the series, the rest of the crew gets the lion’s share of character moments. Which isn’t a problem, just the reverse of usual since they’re the ones piloting the robot.

- This applies triple to poor Moera, who only got any development when he was on death’s door.

- I think Kasha is neat because she’s your standard early super robot show girl pilot, but actually given a machine that can do something. Like if Sayaka Yumi was given a Mazinger of her own.

- You know that bit from Toei Mazinger where Kouji and Sayaka are beating the shit out of each other, and shouting “You’re worse than Baron Ashura!” over and over? Take that, sub in Cosmo and Kasha, and “Buff Clan” instead of Baron Ashura. 100% in character.

- It’s really fucked up that they gave a squirrel a custom space suit that fits both of his tails and also that no one ever mentions this in the show.

- Ideon feels a lot like Star Trek in how there’s a lot of exploring the galaxy and finding exciting and strange new worlds, but in a perverse sort of way where instead of being about humanity’s bright future and potential, it’s about how no one can understand each other except when stockholm syndrome’d together on a ship you can’t ever really leave.

- It’s the little cultural differences that really make it. The Buff Clan and humanity looking the same, being able to understand each other’s language, but to the former, a white flag means “we’re going to kill you all without quarter”? That’s the good shit.

- The episode where Cosmo meets that nice older lady who looks after him for a bit before she bites it gruesomely might be one of the most awe-inspiring bits of media I’ve ever seen.

- The more I think about it, Ideon getting cancelled was possibly the best outcome. Managed a decent ending despite that (better than any of its contemporaries that got axed) and then had its planned conclusion on the big screen. If the show had continued for another cour, the blowback from concerned parents once everyone starts dying would have done it in anyway.

- I got genuinely upset over the big space worms.

- I like how weird and alien all the Buff Clan machines are. Definitely still recognizable as enemy mecha, but they’ve got weird numbers of arms or legs, or things shoot off in ways you wouldn’t expect.

- And last, but absolutely not least, here’s the hot take: anyone who tells you “Evangelion is garbage, watch Ideon” is the dumbest motherfucker alive. Anno is the only dude on the planet who watched Ideon and really and truly understood the assignment.

Miraculously I actually watched Gurren Lagann *without* knowing ahead of time What Happens in Gurren Lagann.

Including what episode it ended on. So watching episode 21 thinking it was the last one was an experience. (and very funny in hindsight)

Because the rest of it was on the next screen on my friend's video player thingy and I couldn't see the page 1 of 2 on her TV.

Me: "yeah sure it's Gainax I'm not surprised they're ending on this I'm just disappointed."

Also apparently being suicidal and borrowing speeches from Kamina's playbook (that I'd heard through social osmosis) is a bad look.

ive been rewatching gurren lagann lately. in some ways (“refuse to ever give into the despair of overwhelming oppression, overcome all obstacles, and create a peaceful future for people!!!”) its aged real well. in others, not so much. spoilers under the cut for a show over 10 years old now. 

i feel like theres not much point in even talking about this, since saying gurren lagann has issues with women would be like saying water is wet, but even so. i just started watching the movies and im pissed all over again that this little moment was left in:

it bothered me in episode 1 and it bothers me here too. this whole bit makes no sense, and not in the usual cool “screw logic” way gurren lagan does stuff. 

their entire society revolves around digging. they live underground and can only expand their their village through drilling more tunnels. they live in constant fear of cave ins, which makes digging to create more space even more essential. plus, the later time scale with the spiral king implies they’ve been living like this for 1000 years. this has been the norm for countless generations. 

so. in a society like that, the person who is really good at digging would be a hero. he’d be loved by everyone and extremely popular, just because he can do this one vital job so well. and in fact, we DO see that simon is valued by the chief and given exceptions that kamina doesn’t get. because his digging abilities are valuable. so who the hell are these random chicks joking about how digging is gross and talking shit about simon for doing it? they’ve been living like this for centuries. they were born into a digging culture. they should think being covered in dirt is the norm. they talk like mean girls in a highschool. these girls make no sense with the setting. 

its really transparent that the writers A) just didn’t think about the worldbuilding like this and just threw in some girls with our worlds beauty standards and B) just wanted to manufacture some forced idea that simon is pitiful and disliked by the ladies. You (presumably straight cis male) audience members can relate to not being popular with women right? 

identify with simon and go to town. 

idk. its just this weird little forced moment. its not as bad or major as nia barely being in the final arc and then getting fridged, or yoko’s development revolving around kids and romance, but it bothers me. it feels very strawman-ish. the male writers create some girls who don’t make sense to mock the mc in a way that they hope all the men in their audience will relate to and tell simon not to care about what those b****** think. i guess its this when combined with how the show treats nia and yoko that really pisses me off.
