tbh, I think The Watcher In The Wings has to be my favourite horror so far. I am in love with stories using their medium for their advantage to do something creative and break its boundaries a bit. Loved how Hembry's lines always had an echo to it, as if he was standing alone on a stage (which he was). It contrasted so well with Paige, who at the beginning still had the normal ambience sounds fit for a radio play, but at some point she also gets the stage echo, which signifies that she has fallen under the influence of the Watcher too.

ohhhh i get it. carpenter "the trawlerman had seen my faith's collapse and taken my brother to punish me". every time faulkner turns away from his god and towards carpenter, chooses carpenter, that's what dooms him. awesome.

so very very emotional about carpenter, injured herself and with a limp, carrying faulkner. and paige obviously doesn't have much of a choice but nonetheless driving for them. cherishing the roadtrip trio while i have them...Our paige...

quite aside from the fact that this is an absolutely brutal parallel, I'm obsessed with how Faulkner cannot stop himself compulsively making the people around him into ghosts in his grand narrative. and yet he never escapes them, never assumes power over them. he's the one who remains haunted.

he assumes that an insubstantive Carpenter will be easier to wrangle, easier to narrativise, easier to fit into the Verses. but when it comes to it he can never quite make her into who he wants her to be, even when he really is imagining her. even when he believes he can hear her shouting back from beyond the torrent she still can't save him.

and, after all-- who will remember Faulkner? he killed his sibling. his sister is almost certainly dead. his faith have schismed and fled and will surely write him out of their holy texts.

he'll be a gap in the story of the destruction of Glottage, the division of the Parish, the rise of the Wound Tree. an absence-presence, almost invisible, helplessly and endlessly reshaped by other people's grand stories.

won't he be a ghost?

everybody talks about and memes on the euphoria-and-tragedy of carpenter and faulkner becoming siblings when you forgot to consider that faulkner had killed his sibling before but ALSO. have any of you guys ever stopped and. just. thought about em.

thought about carpenter's brother giving himself up to the trawler-man body and soul. in a decision that made sense inasmuch as keeping his faith went, but was also wildly destructive and hurt people and more importantly, left his sister fully alone in the world. when she had already lost Everything else she held dear.... em's death as one of the things that most firmly shaped carpenter's tumultuous relationship with her own faith n the trawler-man, the miracles after he died and the helpless "you took everything from me" anger/grief combined.....

do you ever think about em as a man willing to give up everything for his god. including his sister. who loved him more than anything.

and then. DO YOU THINK ABOUT FAULKNER-
