you know i never see people talking about hayward basically being good ending faulkner. hayward has his whole monologue about playing a role for his mother which is so similar to faulkner's high prophet arc - both of them played into a role for the happiness of others, so much so that the act became entangled with themselves, then grew dissatisfied. the difference is that hayward does get rid of the performance that snares him and finds that new role and purpose that faulkner wants so desperately in paige. and faulkner dies wanting
