em and mallory glass!! i drew the original maybe a month ago now, but i finally scanned my traditional stuff for paintovers :] design notes below the cut!!

their clothes are loosely based on some of mine and my brother's slightly more formal clothes from when we were <10y.o - a scout uniform and school pinafore respectively. em's ascot is shorthand for "rural formal" to me

the pattern on em's collar also features on my katabasian designs

the pattern on mal's collar is the same as the broken traditional pattern on faulkner's high katabasian robes, as foreshadowing for her losing her faith

mal is painted wearing greens because she is born to the land. em is blue, because he is born to the water

em is meant to vaguely resemble faulkner. he has dimples, freckles, and similar feature + face shapes

despite the dour air over them, this is just a grumpy boy not wanting his picture taken and his sister caught between his bad mood and her nana's stern direction - truly honestly nothing bad happening to them at this moment. im pretty sure there are pictures of my brother and me with the exact same vibe

this is the sculpture !! i saw the name and immediately thought of Them because my brain is full of silt. carpenter's pose, clothing, hair and colouring, is evocative of nana glass in this portrait i did for her

the silt verses is a very cool podcast for many reasons but also because your first impression of a character is true, but not the full story. faulkner is a sweet optimistic young man, but he's also a religious fanatic and a liar willing to betray and kill others for his own power and legacy. carpenter is a mean but strong old woman sick of everyone's shit, but she's also a character that deeply and fully cares about others and is allowed moments of weakness. shrue is a spineless bureaucrat that makes others do the dirty work on their behalf, but they're also someone with the anger and bitterness and social isolation needed to be easily radicalized.

gives the characters a really genuine sort of three dimensionality to them, that nothing is actually fully a facade, just an aspect of them that they want others to see. the best lies have a fraction of the truth in them etc etc
