Fact-checking convicted felon Donald Trump is a never-ending task. As long as he's alive, he's going to lie.

It was determined that he lied 30,573 times during his presidency; that amounts to over 20.92 lies per day.

He's probably told even more than that since leaving office.

His post-presidency lies broadly have to do with him being a poor loser. There are his lies about failing to get re-elected and now he's lying about his conviction on 34 felony counts last Thursday.

The most ridiculous and blatantly false claim about his trial is that he wasn't allowed to testify.

Trump has previously railed about being silenced and falsely claimed he was not allowed to testify at the trial. But ultimately he made the personal choice to not take the stand in his own defense. Merchan earlier this month addressed the ex-president’s claims, saying: “I want to stress, Mr Trump, that you have an absolute right to testify at trial.” Merchan added that the gag order preventing Trump from verbally attacking witnesses did not affect his right to take the stand.

Trump could have testified if he wanted to. His defense attorneys called only two witnesses – one technical witness and another who did the case no good by acting like a dick to Judge Merchan. The prosecution would have LOVED to cross examine Trump.

With the Trump cult, truth doesn't matter. Confronting them with facts is a futile gesture.

But there is that very small grouping of undecided voters who might be persuaded by reality. So fact-checking may have some use.

The broadest lesson from this trial that might nudge a few minds is that even presidents are not above the law.

No president EVER lied about the results of a presidential election. All candidates, even in CLOSE races, quickly conceded for the good of democracy.

So "every politician lies" is not true at Trump's absurd level.

No president lied about a worldwide pandemic. Trump did. No president lied to take credit for bills they didn't sign or pass. Trump did. No president lied blatantly and repeatedly, bald-faced and easily disproven lies, during a presidential debate. Trump did.

Saying "everyone lies" is like a serial killer saying, "We've all hurt someone in the past."
