Week 1 of Trump Presidency 2.0
Elon Musk did a Nazi Salute twice at inauguration although some (mostly Telsa bros from Elon's fan club) claim it was actually a Roman Salute so it's not fascist or racist. Germany and Austria disagree and said personally they would have arrested Musk for doing that. here [edit: Musk has since appeared at a alt-right German campaign saying Germany is too focused on the past and should move past the guilt of Nazi past. He also says he'll save Germany soo] here
Trump signed an executive order stating all of America is female here
Trump pardoned Ross Ulbricht, founder of dark website Silk Road, who was convicted and sentenced to two life sentences, plus 40 years with no parole in May 2015. Ulbricht's charges included money laundering, drug trafficking, conspiring to commit computer hacking, and engaging in the continuation of a criminal enterprise (Prosecutors also say Ulbricht ordered 6 hits including one against a former Silk Road employee although there is no evidence that any hit was successfully carried out). here
Trump issued an executive order undoing many of Biden's orders. Of the 78 orders' signed by Biden that Trump is revoking, the majority are related to climate change, COVID-19, workplace and racial equality, public health accessibility, education and other public programs here
Bank of America CEO states that crypto will now be embraced by banks (side note Trump and Melania have both created crypto currencies) here
Tiktok is back and Trump said he doesn't care about full ownership he just wants 50% here
Trump has placed an executive order withdrawing from the WHO. here
Trump is expected to issue an executive order focused on "reshaping the military" including banning transgender troops here
Trump promises an overhaul of FEMA, including potentially attaching conditions before aid can be granted, or even dismantling FEMA entirely here
Places of worship, schools, and hospitals are no longer safe havens for migrants from ICE. This has already resulted in the mass deportation of thousands of immigrants, including a plane to Colombia that Trump threatened tariffs if the country did not accept. here and here. Additionally deported were 88 individuals who arrived on the 24th. For the Brazilian deportees, teh Brazil Foreign Ministry is demanding an explanation from the Trump administration, citing the administration's "disrespect for human rights" when the deportees were found to have been withheld water, handcuffed together, and denied bathroom access, with some reportedly being beaten and requiring medical attention. here
Trump stated he plans to mass relocate the people of Gaza by sending everyone to Jordan or Egypt to "clean out" the area of Palestinians. Back in May Biden had placed a hold which prevented Israel from receiving several 2,000 pound bombs from the US, Trump released the hold on the 26th saying its been long enough for Israel to not have their bombs. here
#us politics#trump administration#look i knew this presidency would be bad but holy shit we are only 7 days in and i didn't even list everything#(ps I welcome the kaiju that are coming this year so if they can hurry up that would be great)#a lot going on in america#be safe everyone#brazil#columbia#gaza strip#free palestine

The British Columbia government is cancelling a promised $1,000 grocery rebate and will freeze hiring of some public service positions to "find dollars" in its budget as it prepares for "four years of unpredictability" from the United States, Finance Minister Brenda Bailey says. Bailey said Thursday that the impacts of the "reckless" and "destabilizing" tariffs threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump are impossible to predict. The moves come as B.C.'s budget is set to be tabled on March 4, the same day a month-long pause on Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods is set to expire and just over a week before tariffs on all foreign aluminum and steel could also begin.

One week in and he’s already on his way to crashing the US and global economies. Columbia is the 4th largest supplier of crude oil to the U.S. so expect gas prices to rise by 25% or more. You can sip your $20 dollar cup of coffee while waiting in line at the filling station.

"Liberals after being sentenced to 4 years of no war: 😿😿😿" I know you have not a spec of good faith in you and I understand that when it comes to current events you are literally clueless if it's not about manufactured culture war BS but I genuinely cannot wrap my head around how you could possibly think for even a miniscule fraction of a second that anything Trump is doing prevents war or eases tensions in literally anyway. Unironically cannot possibly even begin to fathom how you could possibly come to this conclusion. Genuinely.

Which also helps explain why the Trump administration is going on the offensive. The Biden administration’s policy was to wait until federal civil-rights complaints were filed and then sweep them under the rug. In practice, this meant that when Jews filed complaints about being assaulted on the way to class, the violent anti-Semites would file their own grievance that their feelings were hurt by the accusation. The administration would then throw up its hands as if the complaints offset each other.
Those days appear to be over. In addition to presidential executive actions on anti-Semitism, the Department of Justice announced a new task force this week whose “first priority will be to root out anti-Semitic harassment in schools and on college campuses.”
The Department of Education has hit the ground running as well. Yesterday Jewish Insider reported that the department has opened investigations into five schools, one of which is Columbia. “As you are surely aware,” Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor wrote to Columbia’s president, “more than 500 Columbia students testified as to the university’s longstanding pattern of tolerating antisemitic harassment, intimidation, and acts of violence. Columbia is alleged to have systemic failures in its application of discipline for antisemitic harassment and conduct that violates the university’s disciplinary policy, in part because of the intervention of its faculty members. Equally troubling are allegations that suggest extensive Columbia faculty involvement and material support for campus-destabilizing encampments and for the criminal break-in and occupation of Hamilton Hall.”
The investigation, Trainor wrote, “will examine whether Columbia discriminates against, enables harassment of, or violence against, students and faculty on the basis of their Jewish ancestry in violation of Title VI and its implementing regulations.”
Columbia bet on long-term federal indifference to institutional anti-Semitism. It deserves everything it’s got coming to it.

Lock him up!
Bannon is a leading fascist strategist for Trump. It's too bad that their trials are in different jurisdictions. It would be fun to imagine them sharing a jail cell – material for a genuine reality show. 😝
A three-judge panel of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld former White House adviser Steve Bannon's conviction for criminal contempt of Congress. Bannon was sentenced in October 2022 to four months in prison on charges related to his refusal to testify before and provide documents to the Jan. 6 committee investigating the attack on the Capitol. At the time, the judge also fined Bannon $6,500 but allowed the former Trump adviser to remain free while he appealed his convictions. According to Friday's order, the three-judge panel rejected Bannon's argument that he was not guilty because his "lawyer advised him not to respond to the subpoena" from Congress. Bannon could still appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, but the justices there previously did not help Peter Navarro, another Trump aide, to stay out of prison on similar charges.

Remember that Mexico also refused to accept deportees because not all of the people Trump was sending them were actually from Mexico.
And the US gets 27% of it's coffee from Columbia, so you can expect to see a bump in prices at Starbucks.
On the plus side for you forgetful fellas, most roses sold in the US are grown in Ecuador and Columbia, so if you need an excuse for not getting your lady a set for Valentines, you can tell her that Trump blocked imports.
Oh, and the Colombian president has already responded with tariffs of his own, so yay! Trade war!

This is an excellent summary of research that was done on two major mainstream news publications--The Washington Post and The New York Times--regarding whether the content of their front pages (from Sept. 1 to Nov. 8, 2022) provided readers with information that would help them to better understand policy differences between Democrats and Republicans in the leadup to the 2022 election. Unfortunately, the study discovered that these "liberal" newspapers of record both tended to post entertaining "horse race and campaign palace intrigue" articles rather than articles discussing political party policy differences.
When these two newspapers did report on policy issues, surprisingly (especially given its liberal reputation) the Times covered more topics related to Republican interests (i.e., "China, immigration, and crime"); whereas, the Post covered more topics of greater interest to Democrats (i.e., "affirmative action, police reform, LGBTQ rights")
Below are the opening and closing paragraphs from the article, which sum up the importance of how the mainstream media shapes public perceptions of election issues--often in ways that could wittingly or unwittingly help dangerous politicians like Trump win powerful positions in our government.
Seven years ago, in the wake of the 2016 presidential election, media analysts rushed to explain Donald Trump’s victory. Misinformation was to blame, the theory went, fueled by Russian agents and carried on social networks. But as researchers, we wondered if fascination and fear over “fake news” had led people to underestimate the influence of traditional journalism outlets. After all, mainstream news organizations remain an important part of the media ecosystem—they’re widely read and watched; they help set the agenda, including on social networks. We decided to look at what had been featured on the printed front page of the New York Times in the three months leading up to Election Day. Of a hundred and fifty articles that discussed the campaign, only a handful mentioned policy; the vast majority covered horse race politics or personal scandals. Most strikingly, the Times ran ten front-page stories about Hillary Clinton’s email server. “If voters had wanted to educate themselves on issues,” we concluded, “they would not have learned much from reading the Times.” [...] The choices made by major publishers are not wrong, per se, for the same reason that one newsroom cannot objectively know how to cover an issue, or how much to cover it: no one can. Still, editorial choices are undeniably choices—and they will weigh heavily on the upcoming presidential race. Outlets can and should maintain a commitment to truth and accuracy. But absent an earnest and transparent assessment of what they choose to emphasize—and what they choose to ignore—their readers will be left misinformed. [color emphasis added]
