I think the mark of an excellent story can sometimes be how truly heinously EVIL the villain(s) can be. A lot of the emotions I experienced while watching the episode last night were a nasty combo of disgust and fear of Ludinus and his gang. And thinking back on it, I'm mostly pissed at the fucking villains for fucking over and shitting on characters in the precise method that would torture them the most.

Beau, who was kidnapped and bound literally and figuratively for most of her life, getting chained up so much she can't even flex a finger.

Caleb, who prides himself on his magic and who permanently afixed an antimagic collar on his abuser as punishment, having one used against him.

(Also BOTH of them getting mind controlled AGAIN after multiple times being fucked with by that shit like UGH)

Ryn, priding herself on being able to move places quickly, being petrified and then losing an arm so she will struggle casting spells.

Kiki, being forced to stay still and let someone kick her while she's down, despite her amazing HARD EARNED power.

And Vax, emerging from the aether probably for the first time since Vex's wedding, determined to save his love, only to be tortured and enslaved bc he dared to show his affection.

(And Kiki having to watch)

And idk, there's something about all of that that just makes the villains that much more awful, and therefore it will be that much more satisfying if/when they are finally defeated.

my post series recommendation is that if you've never listened to the orchestral version of hero by faouzia while thinking about Wilhelm and Simon's utter trainwreck of a romance, you should. I think you should.

#shows #young royals #I have loved this show truly #and it can never not be political for me given where I grew up and my own convictions but I don't think the crew copped out of the politics #maybe it's a gentler version of the story than reality would allow but it's a wonderful example of #thoughtful naturalistic visual storytelling that is largely uninterested #in overexplaining or justifying it's narrative #while still remaining loyal to it's thematic baseline #I'd love to actually get around to some of that meta I vauged about post s2 on class and setting and possibly I will in May #when I have room for thoughts #because I do still want to make my points about how the personalisation of politics usually makes people blind to the systemic issue at han #which I think the show balanced pretty nicely #if you grew up or are growing up in a constitutional monarchy and you're not really engaged with your local republican movement #maybe now would be a good time to start thinking about it #a lot of people think 'well it's an archaic system so it should go' and leave it at that but the issues run so much deeper #than who the head of state is and this stuff is really worth considering if this is the political system the currently defines your future #anyway I'll put my praxis down for the time being #and just take a moment to appriciate this fantastic variation on the age old theme #isn't love really just a form of madness #like doesn't first love just kind of make you utterly lose your mind in a way that could conceivably bring empires to their knees #in all of it's single minded innocence and utter irrationality #cause yeah....yeah I remember that

red flag characters to a certain degree don’t exist and the entire concept is pretty dumb and nuanceless because what it means to like and appreciate a character varies so much from person to person and fandom to fandom and thus is basically impossible to generalize. that being said if there ever was one though it’s definitely anders dragon age

#i’ve said it before but truly he is an incredibly accurate depiction of a shitty ancom ex boyfriend who’s deeply jealous #highly codependent and absolutely will wreck your mental and emotional well-being if you stay with him for too long #he’s incredibly manipulative and has little respect for your boundaries but you’re also to a certain degree Stuck with him #which is a very interesting character and i’m amazed at how real and relatable he feels despite the da setting and the more fantastical #elements to his character. the whole da2 cast really does feel like a bunch of people you know and can see existing irl to a certain degree #but it just so happens that anders is so well-done in this regard that i know too many guys like him and thus don’t like him at all #and as a result he attracts this Exact kind of person fan-wise and truly. they suck so bad #fortunately like a poisonous bug they let you know Immediately that you’re not going to get along n will regret trying to get close to them #like he absolutely is right in the grand scheme of things don’t get me wrong and if it hadn’t been anders doing something #somebody else would’ve inevitably sparked what would become the mage templar war #it’s just that he’s a dick while also being right #and that kind of character can attract some Odious fans who want to scrub away their flaws yet simultaneously idolize their worst traits #dragon age 2 has some good writing and great characters but sometimes some tumblr fans bother me is all i’m saying

I’m so fucked up about simon. His character arc in the main series was set up that ice king becoming a simon again was inevitable. It wasn’t a matter of if, but when and how.

but now that it’s happened, it’s the worst thing that could’ve happened to him.

he had friends! a special secret club of wizards he had matching rings and would go on roadtrips with! he wasn’t even really a problem anymore!

betty’s character is so fantastic. she traveled through time for him. She went insane for him. She become a god for him. But him being Simon was easier for her. Did she ever truly consider if it was what he wanted? She’s not even there with him. She’s not there and now he’s Simon and he’s more isolated than ever.

He lives with humans! At this point, Finn has known him longer as Simon than he knew him as Ice King. Ice King is just an old memory now. But Simon is over a thousand years old. “Simon Petrikov” is just an old memory too. He’s human again, but not really.

What’s worse is how smart he is. He’s an intelligent and emotionally competent man. So he really, truly, profoundly knows how deeply fucked up his life is. He’s so aware of it.

wouldn’t it be easier? If he was stupid and naive and magical? does he miss magic? maybe not ice, but magic itself? would he try to learn? Does he remember the password to Wizard City? Would they even still let him in? there’s a school. He could learn magic again. but would he? Doesn’t Simon Petrikov like learning about magic?

Everything Stays. He’s still here. But he’s different now. Everything is different now except it’s not because the world stayed the same and he’s the one who changed. He can’t go back. Except he did, in a way, and it wasn’t even his choice.
