orpheus saying "to the world we dream about" and then turning and raising his cup to the audience when he says "and the one we live in now." fourth wall break of all time. reminding the audience that this story isn't just about hadestown, but is also about our world. stepping back into reality, just for a brief moment, to acknowledge both the joy and pain of living in that world. it is so deeply compassionate and real and it breaks my heart every time.

Obsessed with stories that preface their own tragedies. They stare you dead in the eye and tell you it will end badly. You watch the characters hurdle towards their doom, unable to do anything but watch. They'll give you hope that this time everyone will make it out, that just this once everything will be okay, only to snatch it away at the last moment. and when you're left grieving the end, you have no one to blame but yourself because they *told* you this was going to happen. there was no other way this could have ended

Musicals are time loops. Every night, the same thing happens except for a few minor differences. It always ends the same. If you want the characters to do something different or to make better choices, too bad. The actors are bound by the script and the score. The only way for the time loop to end is for the show to close. But you (the audience) don't want the show to close, nor do the actors who would like to be employed. It's a lose/lose situation. For the actors, audience, technicians, and for the characters, who are forever stuck in the same stretch of time.

I love how the casting notice for Hermes in Hadestown effectively reads "Any age, any gender, any race, ability to serve cunt essential"

Why is it always about Orpheus turning back foolishly and never about Eurydice following him out of the Underworld, likely knowing she was doomed. That Orpheus went all this way, singing the story of their love, hopeful that he will return her to the surface and finally build their life together— but they will not. She knows her Orpheus will turn back. And yet she still follows him, all the way to the top, because the simple pleasure of seeing his back again is enough for her. Isn’t that a foolish thing to do for love?
