Why did W.I.T.C.H. never take off like Winx Club?

I remember when I was young and there was this funny period in time when all three kids' channels in my country had their own "girls doing magic" animated series going on at the same time, almost as if they were competing.

Jetix had W.I.T.C.H., Cartoon Netwrok had Winx Club, and Nickelodeon had Trollz.

I watched all three of them and felt Winx was the weakest while W.I.T.C.H. was the best while Trollz was... Just kinda there (wasn't great but wasn't awful or anything).

So I was really surprised to see how big Winx of all things ended up becoming while W.I.T.C.H. didn't, and I kinda want to know why because I assumed since this was based on a popular comic it would have already have a loyal fanbase, so what gives?

Like, I remember this show doing so many cool things. Like how the cast didn't get along at first so they had to actually develop their characters to explore why they like each other, the girls had basic elemental powers but all where used in unique ways like mixing air and water to do a Kamehameha, controlling plants, using lightning to bring machines to life, there is even a great episode where the main girl makes a clone of herself by accident and nobody knows what to do with her.

I don't know, I just felt this was really interesting at the time and wonder why we never got more.

Appreciation post for 'girly girl' characters and/or shows that celebrate traditionally feminine things that girls and women are shamed for.

Characters on this list that love makeup, fashion, hair, etc. Characters that are still written as strong, intelligent, brave, etc. That told young girls that these interests are valid, they are not lesser interests. Being feminine and liking traditionally feminine things does not make them weak.

No bc Trollz Fast Trollz Furious did my girl Sapphire so dirty actually. There was no reason for that plot to involve her being a homewrecker 😭😭 why not just have Shale and Mica be the 'bad kids' that Sapphire thought were so cool and wanted to be their friends? Exact same conflict minus the boyfriend stealing that added nothing like what about the following conflicts would change. They can still set her up and take advantage of her and she could still be a bitch to the bffls.

Especially immediately after The Big Test?? She feels like shit n her friends were making fun of her for being a giganerd but then whoa these two really cool rebels actually LIKE hearing her rattle on about physics? AND SHE'D GET TO TINKER WITH THEIR SCOOTS AND BE PART OF THIS COOL SPORT?! Yeah fuck off Amethyst these people are cool as hell (womp womp the set up and end are the exact same).

None of the girls are angels but they really made Sapphire arguably the worst for nothing but 'he's a guy and she's a girl so she's gonna wanna date him'. Booooooooooo

So... I saw Trollz band together on the airplane and, yeah, I get the love for Floyd now!! I love e him too! More of the emo boy please!!!

Floyd feels almost custom made to be a Joey blorbo like dang.

If a character has:

a separation that eats them up inside (bonus points if the circumstances are a combo of things in and out of their control)

an implied history of loneliness

no guarantee that anyone beyond our main circle of characters even cares about them

compassion

sensitivity

mediator skills (bonus points if they stepped into this role when they were really young, and shouldn't have had to)

the ability to pick up on what someone needs emotionally, and show that love to them

innate love for a creative pursuits

self sacrificial tendencies

the nerve to stay kind in the face of calamity (and in Floyd's case literal torture)

then i'm a goner. Floyd ticks off all these boxes and then some.

There's gonna be more of the emo boy for sure.

I Love the way you draw trolls!! But I have to ask, whats up with the gems that you give them in place of their bellybutton? Is it based on canon or sum? I'm not well versed in trolls lore hehe

Prepare for a deep dive... 😅 In short, it's KIND OF canonical? But not really? It's honestly just a long-standing headcanon of mine! A design choice just like tails and paws for me!

Some trolls do have them in canon like DJ Suki (and I think a few background trolls), and they are incorporated into the Netflix show in one of the episodes (Gem Day!) but the shows are not canon.

Though, the Trolls Facebook page also brings them up for their Troll of the Month posts and I personally choose to view these as canonical since they use the movie renders.

They do mention belly gems in Trolls Holiday as well but my incorporation was purely coincidence because I've been giving them belly gems far before any of that was established because of the Trollz TV show I grew up with!

The Trolls in that iteration of the franchise had magical belly gems linked to their magical abilities and bracelets. The main character, Amethyst, had a heart shaped amethyst in her belly.

Amethyst actually has some visual hair similarities to Poppy! Poppy also has a pink heart shaped gem according to DreamWorks!

I kind of just gave Branch and Poppy those gem shapes simply because it just felt right, but DreamWorks seems to agree! 😆 For me, Poppy and Viva both have heart shaped gems. (Viva's is yellow tho) Branch and his brothers all have the same diamond/rhombus shape too :] they usually match the color of their hair.

I give the gems a magical and emotional connection to trolls, as based on the Gem Day episode, their gems are formed by joy throughout the troll's life after planting their first hair. (Branch's gem is cracked due to his greyness but that's a rare instance.)

For me, they're born with one in their belly and then they can grow a separate one in the same way as the Gem Day episode, but the ones in their belly cannot be replaced nor removed. Whatever happens to it is permanent, they must be careful! :]

These gems can be planted together with a partner's or apart (single or ace trolls) in order to wish for/manifest a baby. There's other methods of how eggs can be formed for trolls, but I love the idea of it always being a magical process for them! :] Kind of a nod back to the Good Luck Trolls/Wish Trolls toys where trolls all began! 💖💖💖

Hope my headcanons were interesting to you! I love explaining my gem theories for them :] I've loved trolls long before these movies so my love for trolls runs deep 💖 I was too young (or not born) when the OG trolls were at their peak but I love these little guys!!

Daisy Duck x Cruella (Cruaisy): I started shipping them years ago when I watched this Disney short called Electric Holiday. I've made a couple AUs where Daisy works for Cruella in the fashion industry, and they become close friends and lovers in a May-December relationship. 

Tom (Tom & Jerry) x Bright Eyes (Pound Puppies Season 1): I like to headcanon that Tom and Bright Eyes are childhood friends to lovers. I explain it more in this post here.

Frank Wolff (Jungle Cruise) x Jack Sparrow (TPOTC) (SparrowWolf/WolfSparrow): I don't really ship characters from live-action movies and shows, but Disney Mirrorverse got me to ship these two goofballs.

Cinderella x Gojo (JJK) (Gojoella): Don't get me wrong. I love Sukuella, but I solely blame @peachudumplings for giving me Fairy-God-Gojo, and thus I ship Cinderella and Gojo too, lol.

I redesigned the main 5 characters of the TV show trollz! Did anyone else watch this show

i think itz also rlly silly when ppl act like the hiveswap purplez conflict w/ gamzee being part ov an obscure cult bc like. even if we operate under the misconception most purplez arent cultistz itz not especially unusual tht a group ov like 4 trollz on a train who kno each other personally would be in the same cult. like especially with the higher castez hiveswap iznt rlly depicting Every Possible Type Of Guy within each caste az much az just specific cliquez tht are riding tht train at tht moment. i think a lot ov complaintz abt the hiveswap trollz being samey miss that context. understandably given friendsim stripz it but

i mean to be honest i understand the other side of this complaint. when a game is sold to us as an exploration of alternia, with a human audience surrogate protagonist who's learning about this alien world as we are, it's absolutely normal to think along the lines of "why would this story - and the webcomic that precedes it - only show us purplebloods who are clowns unless it was trying to tell us that purplebloods are clowns?"

making inferences and reading between the lines like that is an important part of reading any story but i think it's especially relevant when we're talking about homestuck, which is particularly economical with its storytelling and pretty much always tries to give the reader the space to figure things out on their own rather than tell us everything outright. like if we spent our whole time playing hiveswap assuming everything we saw could be an outlier we'd basically never end up learning anything about alternia at all. which to me feels pretty cheap

but along those lines ive also never really understood why people chose to interpret the homestuck trolls as all being freak outliers either lol. like i have basically assumed since day 1 that the 12 homestuck trolls were pretty much representative of their castes as a whole. the hemospectrum/alternia as a whole only even exists to facilitate the existence of these 12 characters specifically so why would that not be the case. why would purplebloods NOT all be clowns just because gamzee is

Thinking about Trollz from my childhood. Honestly, I really like Ruby's design and sometimes think about a version of her with some way more deliberate liberty spikes or just otherwise really pushes her hair into an even more punk direction than it already is. This is just her in some clothes I own that matched her in-show style.

I think I'd want to draw her and all the other BFFLs again but in very specific fashion styles-- I think Amethyst could suit a, like, traditional lolita style as far as translating her colors and some of the shape language of her original outfit. Redrawn Ruby has got to be punk, her hair deserves nothing less.

Ruby here was drawn on black paper with posca markers and I used a fine liner to strengthen some of the lines I lost.
