Imps and trolls mingle in a tree village, where job opportunities are posted below the tavern (Dragon 104, December 1985). Dave Trampier's Wormy strips included a number of full-page panels detailing fantastic magical spaces that feel real and lived-in, in which characters go about their daily business, interrupted by the actions of the story. There is a cinematic feel that makes me wish for a Ghibli Wormy film, with scenes lingering on characters simply existing in their environment.

Lets go in order of caste, therefore...

FIRST OF ALL! Nihila Umbrax, the Knight of Void, Derse sway, Burgundy Blood.

Nihila is a burgundy who was less fortunate at wriggling to say the least. They have multiple significant mutations, their eyes are solid red and their height is comparable to that of an older purpleblood, aswell as large mothlike wings. All of this and its seclusion in the woods has led to it being mystified as a local cryptid, the fact that its horns are shaped like antennae does not help the mothman allegations. Beneath all of this Nihila is overall just a big clumsy blind individual, they like to tinker with electronics and usually end up dumpster diving to salvage parts. They were most likely the troll who got SGrub up and working for the group, but its cryptid nature is not at all ceased during the game. Bowkind Strife.

Next we have Squash Tapeko, the Bard of Space, Prospit sway, Bronze Blood.

Squash is a bit of an anomaly in general, being that he operates outside of the typical laws of space and time. Paradox space and Squash get along like two peas in a pod, or more aptly two pumpkins in a patch, while normal space seems to avoid him like the plague. Hes always wearing those tacky shades that have the lines and stuff, and only has one horn which curls like a stem. Anyone accquainted with the laws of paradox space can tell in an instant this goofy goober is like a pumpkin given physical form. He likes to garden, usually growing squashes for later use as plot devices. Sodakind Strife.

Next! Aureum Crisia, the Maid of Light, Derse Sway, Gold Blood.

Aureum has little to no psiioniics despite being a goldblood, she's insecure for obvious reasons. She compensates with over the top optimism, though in truth she is a realist who never waits for things to fall into her hand. She has spent her whole life using charisma and wit to work her way into alternian business, despite the prejudice shown by higher classes. She can be a bit shady sometimes, but she refuses to take any disrespect. Coinkind Strife.

Beitah Bliuta, the Sylph of Breath, Prospit Sway, Olive Blood.

Beitah is close with Nihila, shes shared purr hive with them for as long as they can remember, practically siblings. Their hive is rudimentary regardless, mostly a well decorated cavern. Beitah is overall playful and childish, and the youngest of the group. She is also however a bit feral, for lack of a better word, most view purr as just overall weird for any of these things. Beitah is smaller than most of the others and wears baggy clothes constantly.

Raekie Venaer, the Rogue of Doom, Prospit Sway, Jade Blood.

Raekie likes to call themself a poet, followed by a murder of crow lusii constantly. They didn't favor life in the brooding caverns and instead live in a makeshift treehouse they ended up making after running away. They don't live in the same area as Beitah and Nihila but they do exchange tips through Trollian, and of course Raekie shares their cheesy poetry. Despite the gothic aesthetic Raekie is a terminal optimist, and knows good and well how cheesy their poetry is. Penkind Strife.

Terrun Biyiga, the Thief of Life, Prospit Sway, Teal Blood.

Terrun hates his own caste, plain and simple, mostly because of having lower class friends and realizing he was a part of the problem. He internalizes this hatred as of the start of the session, simply playing along. He has a certain level of internalized self hate, but covers all of this up with a hero complex and cowboy accent. Revolverkind Strife.

Now for a real interesting one, Celare Scurra, the Mage of Mind, Derse Sway, Cerulean Blood.

Celare Scurra is actually not 100% a troll. She always seems oddly well dressed, and never removes her gloves. On Derse, you may hear a whistling of a familiar tune, though back on Alternia it's less well known. Celare Scurra has joined The Midnight Crew on Derse. By some twist of fate, her body has a hint of Carapacian, which has shrouded half of her dreamself in black. She serves as a villain for this story, overall. Bit of a bitch, but unlike Vriska she doesn't flaunt it. Cardkind Strife.

Kirkor Stilis, the Heir of Heart, Prospit Sway, Indigo Blood.

Kirkor isn't the brightest, but he's sure lovable. Hes the only one even close to matching Nihila's height, and serves as Aureum's bodyguard at times as a result, warding off anyone who would threaten her due to his sheer scale. Theres some sort of moiraillegiac tension there, probably. Overall he serves as, well, the heart of the group. Hes also just very clumsy, someone give the 7 foot tall pair some dexterity. Hammerkind.

Manika Dexsue, the Witch of Hope, Derse Sway, Purple Blood.

Manika gets her kicks in a different way from most purplebloods, she usually only dresses up in the full clown getup for formal stuff. Normally shes wearing a dirty jumpsuit and rubber gloves with a purple gas mask, inviting Nihila over for their latest biomechanical experiment. Nibies' arm tends to end up the test subject. Manika is overall just a short mad scientist, and of course besties with Nihila. Sawkind / Needlekind Strife.

Sourim Paetel, the Seer of Blood, Derse Sway, Violet Blood.

Sourim is a socially inept hopeless romantic. He knows how to interact with high troll society... And thats about it. He's all prose and pretty words, with no real awareness of the state of things. He loves rainbow drinker literature, and this was why he first took an interest in Raekie, and then fell HARD. The fact that he has no social awareness makes flirting difficult, aswell as the fact that he takes Raekie's poetry seriously and Raekie doesn't take his seriously. Theyre both idiots with romance. Rapierkind Strife.

Ossico Blakke, Prince of Rage, Derse Sway, Fuchsia Blood.

Ossico is constantly tired, quick to anger if awoken from a good nap. Overall the whole group knows she has some anger issues to work through, but she cares deeply about her friends and is a sweetheart when shes calm. She is a force of raw destruction with a love for all things cutesy and brightly colored, and ducks. Furniturekind Strife.

Nibies Dulcis, Page of Time, Prospit Sway, Cotton Candy Blood.

Nibies was claimed by a purpleblood cult before she could be culled, and was worshipped as the avatar of their god, this was not a good thing for her. Eventually she did make it out and meet Manika, theyve got some sort of undisclosed redrom going on there, noones really sure. Nibies also hates Celare for an unknown reason, and its rather obvious theyve got some blackrom tension. Nibies is silly and over the top to make up for Manika's lack of clown behavior, with a very intense sweet tooth. She probably would have gone entirely mad if not for this group, and Manika and Nihila made her a prosthetic arm to replace the one she lost. Sweetskind Strife.

Are all theatre trolls loud and entitled or is it just Cab?

Depends on the Troll 😆

They can be loud they can be entitled but it varies from Troll to Troll.

Cabaret comes from a huuuge family. Theatre Trolls have a MINIMUM of two eggs at a time. Cab has seventeen brothers and sisters.

You can imagine what it's like trying to get your share and have your voice heard in a large family like that.

Cab had to learn to be louder. 😆

Let me tell you a little more about their genre. I base their characteristics a lot on birds.

Theatre Troll Facts

They aren't from the same land as the Troll Kingdoms. They are from overseas.

Cabaret came from overseas to make it big in the Troll equivalent of Broadway.

Baby Theatre Trolls are known as Chicklings.

They can't fly but they can float down weightlessly.

They subconsciously like to sit up as high as they can.

They build their family homes in trees. Built like treehouses.

They build nests out of sewn together fabric and keep all their favourite things in the nest with them.

Instead of magical hair, they have their expressive head feathers and tail feathers. They can't stretch or change the colour, but they can move them around.

Males have brighter colouring and longer feathers than the females.

Dancing is an important part of courtship and expressing interest in another Troll.

Some Theatre Trolls stick to a colour preference for favourite things.

Common foods include fruits, nuts and different seeded breads.

Theatre Trolls have night vision and all wake up before sunrise. (Early birds 😆)

Monster Kids Next Door

An AU inspired by Monster High where the KND are children of famous monsters and help protect monster kids from humans who want to capture them. The monsters live in a separate world called the Monster World, a parallel of Earth where they'll be safe from humans. The MKND can travel to the human world but some villains like Father have figured out how to travel to the Monster World. The MKND also help human kids from evil adults (they even befriend some humans who can be trusted) and evil fight off evil monsters who believe humans should be eradicated in order for monsters to live peacefully or just some bad monsters in general. Sector V in this AU live in Vileginia (a play on Virginia).

Nigel Inferno/Numbuh 1 - Son of the Dragons

Hoagie P. Trollsend Jr./Numbuh 2 - Son of the Trolls

Kuki Onimaru/Numbuh 3- Daughter of the Onis

Wally Yara/Numbuh 4 - Son of the Yara-ma-yha-who (An Australian vampiric monster)

Abby Treasure/Numbuh 5 - Daughter of the Ghost Pirates

Their treehouse is a mix of a haunted house and the Addams Family's house. Their treehouse is also powered up by hamster ghosts. Bradley/Numbuh 6 is a were-skunk that Sector V rescued, along with his family, from Chester who was trying to sell him.

All the villains all relatively the same, expect most of them want to capture the monsters to sell them or use them for nefarious purposes. Father wants to use the monsters and the Monster Kids Next Door to take over the world. He has a hatred to Sector V (mostly Nigel) and wants to turn them into well-behaved human children. The Delightful Children try to capture the Monster Kids Next Door but Sector V always beats them. Rumor has it that Father might be a monster too and just uses a human disguise. Another rumor states that the Delightful Children used to be monsters but Father turned them into humans a long time ago.

Again chatting with @pap3r-cr0wn about IOL and they mentioned how the cultural difference between Luke and Elliots understanding of violence caused the misunderstanding between them in regards to Elliot watching Lukes fights/games. For Luke his loved ones cheer him on cause they care about him and he thinks that Elliot not watching is him expressing disdain and indifference. For Elliot he doesn't watch because he can't stand to watch Luke get hurt. Which is not something Luke can even conceive of since everyone in the borderlands treats violence as mundane or as a spectacle. It is not until Elliot sort of articulates it in the treehouse before the Harpy vs Troll battle that Luke can understand this. And the revelation that this was behind Elliot not watching him fight compels Luke to make out with his face because the idea is SO novel and also proves that Elliot loves and cares for him.

Codename kids next door headcannons

Numbuh 19th Century's real name is "Albert Lewis"

The Galactic Kids Next Door have tried making a bootleg omnitrix watch.

The boyfriend helmet technology was made by the GKND, and the Galactic Kids Next Door supreme leader uses it's tech to mind control their operatives.

Father and Grandfather's powers stem from their emotions via their hatred of kids, and going with my "The GKND are mind controlled by its supreme leader headcannon" the brainwashing amplified Nigel's dislike for adults all the way up to 11 which activated his powers.

The previous leader of the GKND was actually a fair and kind and powerful alien that's the pure reason the KND exists at all, they gave kids the knowledge and skills to defend themselves so that the universe can be safe for kids.

If they were to learn about what the current leader has done to the organization, they'd be heartbroken.

In the middle ages, the KND treehouses looked more fantasy based and whimsical, like something you'd see in a fairy tale.

When the KND travel through space, they meet a pair of alien adult hero's that are a parody of Wander and Sylvia, the galactic kids next door can't stand them due to them annoying the crap out of their operatives and evacuating planets scheduled for decommissioning.

Numbuh Three has alot of knowledge about yokai (Japanese supernatural creatures)

Numbuh Five and Cree's older brother lives in France, and they mail letters to each other all the time.

Numbuh Two's Dad is a fighter pilot in the military

Bonus round: KND Multiverse headcannons

Theres a knd sector in the TROLLS universe, and they battle villains in music battles

Kid Cosmic is an honorary operative after his encounter with Numbuh 362. They get along well like siblings. Numbuh 363 doesn't like The Kid a lot, but Kid tries to be really friendly with him and even gets him to calm down whenever he gets mad.

Numbuh Five is a powerpuff girls fan, she's even a honorary powerpuff girl and in return she made Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup honorary operatives.

The Gravity Falls Kids Next Door aren't as hostile towards teenagers like most operatives, In fact, they get along with Wendy and her freinds greatly.

The Bikini Bottom KND don't have much of a problem with SpongeBob and Patrick since they don't view them as typical adults. They also really like Sandy Cheeks as she supplies them with her technology. They're neutral with Squidward. They don't have a high opinion on Mr.Krabs after hearing about that "Krabby Land" scam he pulled.

When Mac and Bloo joined the Kids Next Door, they've been rescuing abandoned imaginary friends or freinds that are being mistreated by adults. Lots of KND operatives have even been going to Foster's to adopt their own imaginary friends, and they've been happy with them ever since.

Timmy Turner, Chester, and AJ joined the KND, Timmy supplies his sector and other sectors with magical 2x4 technology. Everyone is baffled on how he managed to get the mysterious energy source for them.

What’s this website?

Best described by its own about page, "The Tree of Life Web Project is a collection of information about biodiversity compiled collaboratively by hundreds of expert and amateur contributors. Its goal is to contain a page with pictures, text, and other information for every species and for each group of organisms, living or extinct."

The feeling I get from it is a more biodiversity focused Wikipedia, with less standard formats for entries and discussion. The last update on the "news" was 2009, so I'm not sure how hopping it is now.

Okay, how did you find it?

I've been growing corn lately, so I went to the Wikipedia article for monocot, scrolled down, and accessed "Websites and Databases". I'll admit I found its entry for monocots to be a little dense, so I explored a little bit until I found the "Treehouse" section, which is less technical and more layman/science outreach oriented. This is not my field, so I appreciated that!

How’s it doing on Internet Archive?

True to its 2005 label, I don't believe it has changed since its first capture! It has 85 saves though, a respectable number!

What delighted you the most?

From the primates article: some little factoids about phylogyny that tickled me. The note about "three ear bones" and its lack of explanation especially made me smile.

And then of course on a human level, I loved this:

But on a broader, more reflective note, this is easily the kind of article that would be considered "acceptable and/or encouraged" as a source when I was near the end of elementary school and being introduced to the idea of citation. Back then, Wikipedia was considered highly suspect because it was such a ripe target for internet troll-editing. In that in-between stage of maturity, where longtime encyclopedia enjoyers were realizing that this could be such a boon to information, but internet moderation hadn't quite caught up to its discovery as a centralized resource.

I'm really happy with Wikipedia, actually. If you asked me what's one of the best things about the centralized internet (so to speak), it is that consolidation of information. Of course, that's enabled by hundreds of thousands of active contributors and a good org to back it up. And it's still a good idea to use the wisdoms of my elementary school days (especially for doing deeper research) and going through that citations list to see what's there.

All and all, nice to see some science outreach/information with that early 2000s website charm :)

Melody of a Village

The portals dropped them off at Twilight’s Ordon. More specifically, half of them were dropped in Twilight’s Ordon treehouse.

Wild is certain Hylia was being a cheeky shit when she dropped him right into his boyfriend's loft bed. He swears he sees the personality similarities between Flora, Sun, and the goddess when the former two tease, and the latter is just so seemingly blatant.

He jumps down to the ground level with the others. Hyrule was rushing outside to vomit over the railing. He’ll have to be sure to give him something soothing with dinner. Wind was making sure nothing landed in the pit fireplace.

He peeks outside to see the other half of the chain, apparently while Hylia was trolling him, she was dropping the others outside off at the same height as the main level of Twi’s house. Which meant a sizable drop for all of them. They were all nursing bruises, most of them landed poorly, including Twi, Legend clutching his ankle painfully. Wild jumped down to take a look. Definitely sprained, but he was able to fix that up with Grace. The watery healing relaxing Legend’s tense face as it fixed the tendon and pain.

He went over to his boyfriend who was sporting a nasty bruise on his arm from landing into a tree trunk. He held it delicately as he healed it, tying the blood vessels back together, and giving his boyfriend a soft smile when his hiss of pain evens out to a relieved sigh.

Wild treated a few other nasty bruises, Time brushing off his own, the stubborn oaf. He can let Hyrule handle him when he’s feeling less sick.

When everyone is recovered, and Hyrule heals Time after threatening to knock him out to do it, everyone settles into Ordon. Wild is drawn to the ranch, and the beautiful Epona in the stable. Twi has mentioned her before, and she really is as beautiful as he described. She’s skittish around people, but Wild doesn’t reach for her, he just closes his eyes and hums a soft melody from his own time, one passed from stable to stable, said to calm horses.

Before he notices, Epona approaches him, nuzzling his face with a snort and soft whinny. Wild rubs under her chin, and she leans into it, huffing into his face.

At the entrance, Twilight smiles softly, watching his special girl and his special boyfriend bonding. He wonders how Wild knows Epona’s song, but that’s a question for another time. For now he’ll just enjoy his family all being safe and comfortable in the village.
