it's my 5th time rewatching it now, with friends this time. and just... the entire ending of s3 enamors me so heavily. it's just this ultimate culmination of the death of innocence.

and it's not bad AT ALL.

the moment Merlin tells Jim "you get the choice to become stronger and be the foe that your villain fears, or you can take your chances as you are. if you stay like this, it's entirely like you'll be killed. and if you change... a part of you is going to die forever."

you just. you immediately know the stakes. i understand that it's quite literally Jim losing his humanity, he becomes a troll, yes. but i equate it so heavily to the loss of his innocence, of his literal human-nature to love and care. because he becomes so animalistic afterwards, it's like watching someone spiral. it's a walking tragedy, especially after you watch the whole show and you can't help but UNDERSTAND WHY he's spiraled so hard.

not to mention, just... the mastercraft of the bathtub scene. it's a sensory overload of every single reason Jim wants to stay human, but at the same time, it's the EXACT reason needs to turn in order to protect all of those he holds dear.

and not just that, the fucking... the deliberate framing. he's alone, locked himself in a room. there's a phone ringing on the counter, but he can't hear it and he refuses to look. he's just sitting there, quietly, going back and forth constantly to decide what to do. his whole family and friends are beating on the door, trying to get to him, but he just won't listen.

the fact that they bleed Anton Yelchin's lines into Emile Hirsch's at times, as if it's a moment of saying goodbye to the previous voice actor. like a passing of the torch. it's almost symbolic of everything he's going to do going forward: letting his humanity, his entire self, die.

i swear, barely any shows i know these days can evoke emotions like that. where the visual metaphor of someone committing suicide is so powerful that you have to just reach out constantly and beg and hope and pray that he will turn around and open the door instead.

it's hopeless incarnate. it's the death of innocence. it's watching the quiet death of someone who just wants to better for the people around him.

it's so fucking painful, but it's god-tier story-telling and animation. i can't even imagine how they managed to write that all down.

ToA x LMK (?)

Had a random crossover idea. Spoilers for people who haven't seen the last season of Trollhunters, but then again that show is years old so like :p

Basically, in the final fight between the Trollhunters and Morgana, when Claire and Morgana go into the shadow realm. Yano how it's not shown? Yeah had a funny idea if Macaque from LMK was coming through, and looked at the two and was like (to Morgana) "Bitch for the last time I told you not to start fights here," and beats the ever loving shit outta her.

Anyways, bro is looking around and is like "oh shit kid you're still here-" as he looks at Claire, who is still recovering from the fact Morgana is dead and gone now, and everything is over, and hey the shadow realm is nice without the fear of Morgana being there looking over her shoulder.

This is my convoluted way of saying that Macaque after seeing a baby shadowmancer, (cause you can never find any of those these days who aren't absolutely ancient) just looks at Claire and goes "you can do better than that" and starts helping her with shadow magic. Maybe at first it was a way to get more power and then he just starts to care for her. But in my head a majority of the reasoning that Mac decided to help her is because it's a dying art and she's probably the youngest shadowmancer in the world at the moment.

I can see a lot of stuff coming out of this. Like just from the top of my head:

-Claire becomes one of those immortal wizards and flash forward to the future meets LMK crew. (from this idea stems my second idea of Pigsy and Tang trying to unlock Claire's tragic backstory(TM) even though there isn't much of that here.)

-Dad Macaque, because, come on.

-ROTT movie just, not happening now that there's a monkey on par with the guy who beat up all of heaven including all it's gods on their side. I'd imagine Demi-gods (because that's what arcane order is listed as on the wiki) is alot easier than gods, and def a lot easier than losing (lol) to Sun Wukong.

-Angsting to eachother. Think of any lmk x toa pairing, and you can make an angst conversation out of it some way or another.

-Half-troll Jim just going to Megapolis with Claire to visit Mac and becoming obssessed with the anti gravity arcade because it's open at night and just hell yeah.

-Lore building perhaps with the two universes mixed together??

-Claire helping out with the shadow play stuff while she visits Mac. Bonus points if she gets a mention in his vent play about the hero and the warrior.

-Toby and Mei playing games together, and Toby getting his ass absolutely handed to him.

-Mac going away to visit Claire during s3 or between seasons to vent about "what the fuck is going on kid- " because alot of the lmk villains don't go outside asia except if they want to rule the world (cough, lbd) so they can't really find him all the way in California, America lol.

-Bonus points if Claire learns how to speak Mandarin or Chinese (i forgot what the LMK gang spoke originally because i'm a silly lil english speaker who only watches the eng dub) so now she's trilingual. Spanish, English, whatever the hell the lmk gang speaks.

I dunno the ToA fandom is pretty dead, and I don't know how many LMK fans know about ToA, so. rip me ig. if this post gets a few notes i'll consider posting the art i made for this so far ('art' as if i'm not talking about a few sketches in my lil book of sketch).

Final thoughts on Trollhunters!

(Spoilers for the book)

ARRRGH!!!'s death seems very cathartic to me. Kind of like closure in an odd way, and it makes sense to the story.

Claire being literally the most badass Trollhunter is such a Claire thing. I love her.

Toby. Just Toby.

Jim getting that moment with his dad after the final battle was such a sweet thing. Just Jim in general. Book Jim was like S1 Jim if S1 Jim had S3 Jim's attitude.

Jack Sturges, hello yes I love you. He's like Douxie but physically younger and more bloodthirsty. Just his whole "I'm actually in my 50s but I still look and act 13, I'm very tired" thing. I love that.

Jack and Jim sharing that crazed love of the hunt and being invigorated by battle was one of my favorite things. Jim realizing that he's only good at Trollhunting and absolutely loving it. Has my whole heart.

Blinky, ARRRGH, and Jack being family to eachother???? It made me think that the showrunners took inspiration from that to give us Jim and Blinky's father/son duo and I'm living for it.

BLINKY AND JOANNA M. ARRRGH WERE IN LOVE AND YOU CANNOT CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE. Yet another thing that was translated into the show and I love it dearly.

It was really nice being able to see which things were clearly taken from the book and put into the show. I loved it with my whole heart.

Jim and Toby were in love in this book.

Claire with a Scottish accent. Yes I love it. I want more of it.

This book is one of the best I've ever read. I might be biased, but I don't care. It's a good story, and I kind of wish there had been more than one book. I would love a series of just these characters.

Claire and Jim at the end tho. The jlaire was so real.

Also, literally ending the book by all of them murdering Steve upon finding out he's a changeling was so funny to me.

Inspired by other fics:

The Adventures of Gonky the Cat - Slight spoiler, Gonky is a cat in the modern AU fic Roasted, Brewed, & Served with Attitude (see description below), and I decided to write his backstory/fill in some of his adventures. This is a WIP, currently there are no spoilers in it, but eventually there will be some chapters that give spoilers for later in the story (and will be noted as such).

Gemini Eyes - This one shot fits in as a chapter in between chapters 85 and 87 of Roasted, Brewed, & Served with Attitude (see description below). DO NOT read it unless you have made it that far in Mel's work, otherwise you will have pretty significant spoilers. I had a lot of fun working with Mel's versions of each character, and it's always a joy to write Tech's thought processes and mannerisms.

Roasted, Brewed, & Served with Attitude - by MelMorganne99 over on AO3. It's a clever, emotional, modern AU with Crosshair x OC (and one of the best OC characters I've ever read). This fic helped me understand and appreciate the nuances of Crosshair's personality and emotional journey, and has given me endless writing inspiration. And the author is one of the kindest, most engaging people I've ever met online. Please, please, please do yourself a favor and read it. There are 99 chapters but they're on the short side and full of snarky humor and sometimes surprising cameos. This is a full blown fix it fic too, although not always in the ways you might expect!

The Vacation - by @staycalmandhugaclone is one of the best Crosshair fics (and smut fics in general) I've ever read. The writing style haunts me and both Crosshair and the OC are beautifully characterized.

Hi, my favourite Disney sequels are Bambi 2, for it's sweet, passionate and touching story about Bambi bonding with his dad, and 101 Dalmations 2: Patch's London Advendure, it's charming, funny and heartfelt. For HBB, I'm very torn on making Claire and Toby a couple, could you help me? Also, what would Trollhunter!Claire's relationship with Vendal be like? What do you like the most about the Spider-Gang in Spiderverse? And why was season 3 disappointing?

I haven’t seen the second 101 Dalmatians movie but I’ve been meaning to get around to it so that’s nice to hear.

I … don’t really understand this question? You want help writing their dynamic (which I don’t know if I’m qualified to help with because I’m not a writing coach), or you want help deciding whether to ship them (which I don’t feel it’s my place to help with because I consider story ships a personal choice by the writer)?

Either way, no, I don’t think I can help. But I can link you to a Springhole article, “How Can/Should I Do This Thing With My Story/Setting/Character?” How Figure It Out For Yourself! This website has really helped me a lot in my characterizing and worldbuilding and thinking critically about what and how I write.

Vendel in canon specifically describes Claire as “an intelligent and delightful fleshbag” after she speaks trollish to him in their first introduction, and expresses a wish that the Amulet had chosen her instead, so his role as Team Grandpa would probably come about earlier in a Trollhunter!Claire story.

The Spider-Gang was a ragtag team of accustomed-to-working-solo heroes having to learn teamwork while stuck in a dimension where, at least in some cases, the very laws of physics were different. That was fun.

Here is a list of things I was hoping to see in Season Three of Trollhunters which did not happen:

The Trollmarket refugees hiding out in the old Janus Order base, a massive underground structure where the Gumm-Gumms would never think to look for them.

Strickler and/or Nomura expressing a desire to avenge the Changelings Gunmar murdered.

Changeling survivors other than Strickler, Nomura, and Not Enrique, who either join the Trollhunters to seek revenge against Gunmar for betraying them, or set up their own faction to establish that the Janus Order is still going to be a factor in the Tales of Arcadia spinoff series 3Below or Wizards.

Brainwashed!Draal attacks Jim outside his house and Nomura fights him off, in poetic reversal of the fight in Season One that led to Draal moving in to Jim’s basement; possibly Barbara sees the fight and this is how she remembers about trolls.

Draal is rescued/frees himself, and does not die.

The main cast learns Angor’s backstory (we never see them learn it, Jim just somehow mysteriously knows it) and we see their emotional responses to that.

Angor joins the Trollhunter team and now he and Strickler have to play nice with each other, and also Angor does not die.

An epic final confrontation showing us just how a human Trollhunter is able to take down Gunmar, presumably involving Jim not fighting Gunmar alone.

Jim makes contact with the Void somehow and we finally meet Deya the Deliverer.

Healing the Heartstone and reclaiming Trollmarket.

Blinky’s paranoia, mentioned in Season One and never really addressed again, makes him a good leader for the Trollmarket refugees during wartime, but not so much in the several post-slaying-of-Gunmar episodes that focus on reconstruction; he and Bagdwella in particular clash a lot and she ends up becoming the peacetime leader of Trollmarket but keeping Blinky on hand as an adviser.

Direct canon confirmation of BlinkAAARRRGGHH rather than just heavy hinting.

Nomura and Draal get back together.

Strickler actually says the words “I’m sorry” to Barbara. He gets a gradual and carefully structured redemption arc.

Rescuing the Changelings who don’t have Familiars yet out of the Darklands as well as rescuing the Familiars, setting up a future-series plot line of reintegrating the Changelings into troll society.

Claire interacting with Original Enrique, and the Nuñez parents interacting with Not Enrique. (Sitting beside him on a couch with no indication they know who or what he is does not count.) Claire introducing her parents to her adopted troll brother would have been a great scene.

Claire (and maybe Toby since he and Darci are dating) explaining to Mary and Darci in detail about trolls, either before the final battle (so they can help) or afterwards during the several-episode wrap-up that shows how healing in the aftermath of an epic battle is just as important to the heroes’ stories as the epic battle itself.

A flashback explaining what the heck happened in the Deep.
