Could you recommend some books about trauma?
Yeah! One of the first one I read was 'Toxic Parents' by Susan Foward. Then there's 'Why does he do that', by Lundy Bancroft, which explains in detail the intentions behind specific acts of violence and abusers 'losing control', it's a great breakdown of all violent and abusive behaviour. Understanding the abusers intentions helped me to get out of self doubt and self-blame.
On trauma specifically, Pete Walker's 'Complex PTSD' is a great guide to recognize and deal with symptoms such as emotional flashbacks, catastrophizing, self hatred, aftermath of neglect. It moved me forward a lot with my own recovery.
Recent one I read was 'I'm glad my mom died' by Jennette McCurdy, it offers an inside perspective of how it is to live with an abusive mother who enmeshes and parentifies a child, and the painful aftermath of living with the consequences. It also teaches a lot about eating disorders and how they feel from the inside perspective.
If anyone reading this knows of more helpful books, add them in the comments!

Oh yes, the past can hurt. But you can either run from it, or learn from it.

Hey, I am planning on reading some books about trauma (thanks for the recs, though I wasn't the one who asked) but learning about trauma is often triggering to me. In a very special way, it feels different than my "more often occuring" triggers. It feels more like being taken back to the time when that happened. I often, because I forgot a lot of my past, also remember things again. Or I see myself in trauma reactions and get in a bad mood because everything on me seems to be a trauma reaction tbh.
How can I make reading such books safe and comfortable for me? Or is it overall a bad idea?
hey anon,
It can definitely be difficult to know when you're ready, and for what. Some amount of being triggered can be tolerated and contribute to the lessening of the trigger, but if you push yourself, you risk recession.
It sounds like learning about trauma is triggering you to the point of flashback and resurfacing memories. Honestly, without more info and time, it's hard to be sure whether you should take a break from learning about this, or if this is one of the big bumps you have to get through in order to further your healing. Everyone's journey looks different.
The main things are: are you in a safe place to process things? Can you make room for this at this point in your life? Do you feel it is inevitable and that you will have to process it one way or another? If your life is somewhat stable, it might be time to expose yourself to things that trigger you. It might be time to remember. This will ultimately be up to you, as you know your situation and mental state best.
Here, here, and here are some articles regarding trauma processing and when to do so.
Here are some links to help you cope:

Take care.

when I read aftg the first time I thought the best scenes were "thank you, you were amazing" "it's always yes with you" "i am nothing and as you've always said you want nothing"
but now I can see that the best scene is clearly when Neil asks Andrew how he can stand their relationship after everything he went through and then he tries touching his arm and Andrew says "no" and Neil stops and "that's why"
destructive
