Cecilia Gentili was a trans activist.
Cecilia Gentili was a mother.
Cecilia Gentili was a friend.
Celicia Gentili was an icon.
Celicia Gentili was here.
Cecilia navigated an often unkind world with a disarming and empowering grace. Her journey from Argentina to the heart of New York City was not merely a search for sanctuary but a quest to make the invisible seen, the silenced heard, and the marginalized celebrated. Her activism was her art, and her art was a form of activism. Cecilia painted vivid pictures of resilience, struggle, and triumph through her storytelling. She brought to life the experiences of the trans community, advocated the decriminalization of sex work, and supporting those living with HIV/AIDS. Cecilia's voice was a clarion call for justice, echoing in the corridors of power and the streets, demanding change, equity, and love.
Cecilia was a force.
Cecilia's legacy is not only in the many movements she helped shape or the policies she influenced, but also in the lives she touched. She mentored many, sharing her wisdom, warmth, and wicked sense of humor, oh so generously. To be loved by Cecilia was to be seen in your entirety, embraced for who you were, and inspired to become who you might be. I know this from personal experience. Her capacity for love was boundless, and she gave it freely, fiercely, and without reservation.
Cecilia was a healer.
Like her activism, her art reflected her soulâbold, beautiful, and transcendent. Cecilia used her creativity as a tool for advocacy; her performances and storytelling were not just entertainment but powerful statements on identity, society, and the human condition. Through her art, she challenged systems, questioned injustices, and oriented communities in the discipline of hope.
Cecilia was a teacher.
Cecilia Gentili leaves behind a world forever changed by her presence. She showed us that change is possible, that love is powerful, and that living one's truth is the ultimate form of resistance. Let us honor her memory by supporting one another with compassion, living our truths, and building the world she knew we all deserved.
Cecilia is now an ancestor.
Rest in power, Cecilia. Your journey here has ended, but the love you left us is everlasting. We love you, miss you, and will never forget you.

SUPPORTING TRANS LATINAS
For that last three years Out My Closet has extended our services across international borders to support under-resourced and marginalized communities, from supporting children in the interior regions of Guyana, to supporting an orphanage in the Dominican Republic and this year, supporting transgender women in Havana, Cuba.
Out My Closet delivered a tremendous number of resources including, clothing, shoes, cosmetics, hygiene products, beauty aids (nails, eye accessories, and wigs), sexual health contraceptives in support of Trans Cuba.
Trans Cuba is a part of The National Center for Sex Education (Spanish: Centro Nacional de EducaciĂłn Sexual, CENESEX) is a government-funded body founded in 1989 in Cuba. The center is best known for advocating tolerance of LGBT issues on the island. The head of the center is Mariela Castro, daughter of the Cuban politician and former president of the Federation of Cuban.
Team OMC, with Mariela Castro at Havana Pride.
While things are changing for the gay community, trans-people, although not officially counted in national census's have the highest rates of HIV in Cuba, a country with the lowest rates of HIV in the western hemisphere.
Malu Calabrara is a transgender woman who is an activist for transgender rights. She works with CENESEX and Castro to run the Trans Cuba network. Started in 2001, it is the only national social network for trans people in the country, designed to build social awareness, HIV prevention and family counseling.
Team OMC with Malu Calabrara, Trans Cuba's President.
The TransCuba Network is comprised of about 3,000 people and of those people "more than 90 percent of the transgender people in Cuba live with HIV," Calabra said before one of the workshops she and TransCuba are running in Havana.
Maluâwho is HIV positive herselfâattributes these numbers to the amount of trans-people practicing prostitution. "I left my house at a very early age, when I was 13 years old," Malu remembered. "Then I came to live in the Capital Cityâof course I had a life full of prostitution, of crazy things," she added.
Supporting Trans Cuba
Many trans-people move to Havana from the outer provinces and rent apartments. However, there is a price for sexual liberation in the more accepting capital city. Rents are high and as a result many turn to prostitution.

OMC's President, Michael Narain with George Maestre, who organized resources with NYC Night Life allies in support of the campaign, supplying wigs, cosmetics and other beauty resources for clients.

Supporting Transgender women has always been a dual mission of Out My Closet. We've supported many trans lead and trans populous organization in NYC, South Florida and D.C.. Specifically, the Trans Latina organizations that OMC has supported were Ariana Center in Fort Lauderdale and CITG (Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo) in Jackson Heights, Queens NY. Recently OMC conducted a POP-UP shop to support CITG at their site, pictured below.

[ SIMPLIFIED Image ID :: A flag with nine horizontal stripes, the colors from top to bottom are: Dark blue, blue, muted green, green, white, green, muted green, red, dark red. // End ID. ]
Translatinx
â A racial identity where one feels like they should be or identifies as latino/latina/latinx in some capacity.
This is our take on the flag since our primary caretaker identifies with translatina, and we wanted to commemorate her. This has been coined before, all credit goes to the original coiner.
We made nine different variations for this flag... We obviously can't fit them all into one post, so... â Hyperlink Rentry :: https://https://archive.ph/PrRbA

I don't know if anyone has heard, but there's a rumor going around through Twitter calling for a "Trans Day of Vengeance" scheduled for this weekend in D.C. There is indeed a protest from the trans activist group TRAN, but they did not create or support the poster that's being passed around on Twitter. There are no nation-wide calls from the trans community, especially in the wake of the recent shooting, to commit violence or terrorism. If someone you know tries to tell you all about the supposed day of "trans terrorism" direct them to the TRAN website. The poster from Twitter and its message of violence and terrorism from the trans community is false and it's propaganda. We shouldn't expect anything less in our current anti-trans political climate. Fox News, naturally, is still reporting the protest as the "Trans Day of Vengeance" without fact checking. The best way to determine that none of that is true is that 1) it's coming the week after a great tragedy when this likely was organized weeks ago before the event, 2) the Twitter poster came out the week before April Fool's Day, and 3) it was reposted by Marjorie Taylor Greene without any fact checking. If you're joining any peaceful protests this weekend or in the future, please be safe.

Bamby Salcedo
âBecause I am one of the chosen few, I want to make sure I give back.â                                             photo by mediarelations4 Bamby Salcedoâs story is one of courage, tenacity, humility, dedication, and love. She was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, to a single mother who had to work long hours and was rarely home. To escape her abusive stepfather, Bamby joined a street gang, where she found a sense of belonging and even motivation. Thatâs also where she began using drugs as an escape from the pressures of homophobia, transphobia, and abuse. At seventeen, Bamby immigrated to central California to be with her father, but ended up moving to Los Angeles when she felt bored and stifled there. In L.A. she found trans community on the streets, as there were no formal organizations for her to turn to. After escaping an abusive long term relationship, Bamby discovered she was HIV positive, and intensified her drug use to ease her emotional pain. During this period she did time in menâs prisons, where she was was subjected to humiliation, harassment, abuse, and sexual violence. Bamby describes the moment she experienced divine intervention on June 6, 2001, when an African American woman gave her five dollars for food. She was so moved by this kindness that she went to a treatment center that day. At the center, she learned basic computer skills and found employment at an organization working for the prevention of HIV in trans women. The 2002 murder of Gwen Araujo spurred her further in her commitment to activism- for HIV prevention, immigration rights, and trans rights.
youtube
In 2009, Bamby founded the TransLatin@ Coalition, an organization made up of all Transgender Latina women whose mission is to âadvocate for the specific needs of the Trans Latin@ community that resides in the USA and to plan strategies that improve our quality of life.â The Coalition provides a wide range of services, including a drop-in center, daily food distribution, immigration detention and incarceration support, leadership development, workforce development, ESL classes, a computer lab, and HR training. After the leaked Health and Human Services anti-trans memo made news, the Coalition unfurled a giant trans flag banner at a Dodgers game during the 2018 World Series, with a message reading âTrans People Deserve to Live.â Click for articleÂ
                               Image from TransLatin@ Coalition website
Angels of Change is a project that Bamby has produced to support transgender youth services at Childrenâs Hospital Los Angeles. Itâs an annual calendar and non-competitive runway show that provides positive and fun representation for transgender and gender non conforming youth.Â
Trans Lives Matter National Day of Action is another movement that Bamby had a hand in creating, to draw attention to the violence perpetrated against trans women, particularly trans women of color. The movementâs purpose is to create an agenda to make life better for trans women of color in the U.S. Video here
In 2014, Peruvian-born, Los Angeles based filmmaker Dante Alencastre released Transvisible: Bamby Salcedoâs Story. For screening info and to watch the trailer, click here.
Bamby Salcedo has participated in a 2012 White House panel for the Women and Girls National HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day, has spoken at conferences like the United States Conference on AIDS and The People of Color Conference, has been honored by GLAAD, ColorLines, OUT Magazine, and Lambda Legal, and is tirelessly striving to do more.
